I live on the West Coast of Florida, and when we were kids, we would wait for low tide then jump off the seawall to catch tons of fiddler crabs. My days of jumping off seawalls have long been over though lol
Wow! I’d always try to catch em by a hole, and never succeed. It’s crazy just a small amount of pressure and a scoop does a difference!! Can’t wait to go out to Texas City and get crabs for some big drum!!!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge! Just hours before you posted this, I saw tons of them locally ( Long Island) & was trying to figure out how to catch them.
@@Gypsyboy932 yeah if they are schooled up like that you can catch a bunch quickly, seen guys in Florida who dig holes & bury buckets. They then use a pvc pipe to drive them towards the hole.
Cool vid man...I have done it that way in the past but now I just dig a hole and bury a square Rubbermaid tote. I drop a fish rack in the tote so it is sticking out. Come back an hour later and you have 5 dozen
Great Video but I have a quick question. When you fish with the crabs on light jigs how do you keep such a light jig on the bottoming in heavy current?
Man this video is so cool, I had no idea how to catch them. I'm gonna try this in OC this summer, does the tide make a difference? Was this low tide or not in the water but in a run off marsh?
Yeah you definitely need to try it out, everything eats them. I find low tide is the best time, depending on where you are tide is definitely influential. Where I was it’s not as big of a deal because there’s so much salt marsh that I can maneuver through. The only time I find it difficult to get them is when you have a flood tide and the marsh is flooded.
So in New Jersey, I’ve caught them up to November. They definitely hibernate during the winter, because I rarely see them during the winter months. Unfortunately I have not found a way to preserve them for the off-season. That’s why I load up on sand fleas this time of year. They are much easier to preserve
Joe, was fun watching you catch these little fiddlers. Is it okay to catch these crabs in US? In my country, they are really super fast and very difficult to catch as most of them gets into their burrows very quickly, like in a flash :). Had to shovel it up almost a meter to barely catch one... maybe giving some pressure right next to the hole like you did might work better - I'll try it out.
I’m nuit interested in fishing but I really enjoyed that tutorial. After you catch them, do you cook and eat them? Do you put them in gumbo?😊Anyway, thanks.
@@609Fishing awesome, thank you for your response, I kind of was thinking that but I've never used them before always used cut mullet squid and shrimp.
When I was much younger, we would find hermit crabs on sand bars in Barnegat Bay at low tide. Tons of them. Just beach our little 12 foot boat and grab them up.
Man I thought I was subbed this whole time! Am now! The salt world is insanely cool. We don’t have that here so its crazy awesome to watch and learn! Maybe one day I can get on some salt water🤙🏻🔥
Yeah man it’s a different world of fishing for sure! Lol was funny to see Alex’s reaction to Tog & Stripers 😂 he was like Bass usually give up after the initial fight 😂 thanks for the sub ✊
Great video, Joe. That's how I catch em. Waiting for parts II and III - fishing with them!
Thanks for watching 👍

Where at in West Florida
I’m in Tampa Florida and they are not as plentiful when I was in Jacksonville. It sucks here in Tampa
@@fortheloveofmoney1752 That was in Treasure Island in 1967. So just over the bridge from you. Pinellas

In about 3-4 weeks I’m going to do a video on how to trap them

Great Video but I have a quick question. When you fish with the crabs on light jigs how do you keep such a light jig on the bottoming in heavy current?
So my next video you’ll see the technique that I’m using. It’s all about finding current breaks or areas or lower current
Weight below 6-10 “ below your hook.
Great video from the 609 marshes ,i hate greenheads & chiggers🤣🤣
😂😂😂
There is plenty of salt marsh off the Garden State Parkway south of Brick. I didn't even think about where or not that is private or public land.
Yeah the garden state is littered with fiddlers. Thanks for watching DPuck!
thanks for the tips

Get one of those hand held extension grabbers at lowes and get good at it.
I’ll definitely give that a shot
Thankyou👍👍👍👍

When is the earliest we can start catching them?
They are around and about (NJ) from March-November

Great Video - How late are you able to catch them? Do you ever try keeping them alive in your basement for taug in November/December

@@thomaslawrence3232 that’s my video dropping today at 5
We don’t have basements on the island, the water table is extremely high
Wow where is this ?
Salt Marsh . Honestly any marsh that sits on saltwater has them
We both from south jerrz lmao tryna find ur secret spots

Yeah they are one of the tougher crabs to catch by me just because they hang in areas of high grass
i know this was a year ago but if you bring a bucket you can sneak up on them when theres halfway in there hole

How are fiddlers for shore fishing?
In my opinion not so great. They are a very brittle bait, can’t imagine they’d stay on the hook very well casting for some distance
@@609Fishing awesome, thank you for your response, I kind of was thinking that but I've never used them before always used cut mullet squid and shrimp.
Here's one crab I haven't used yet for togs, coming soon!
Can’t wait to see it!!! They are tog candy
We dig em up here. Just pick a hole and scoop em up.

Yea shake ppl down for them👍, like and to subscribe. 🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂
Such a simple but effective way to get bait.
Easy as can be 🙌
I never snagged one for bait, but I’m gonna give it a try now
They are definitely worth catching, they are an outstanding bait
Gotta be a way to trap them?
There is, going to do a video on it soon 👍
I got them all in my ditches. If you lift the side of your shoe up a little they will crawl up under your foot
Yeah there’s a decent population where I live, I’ve learned to just set traps because he can catch all you need with little to no work
Any of those hermitcrabs over there? 🦀
No hermits but found some mud crabs mixed in with them

They don't know how to catch them like they do in Puerto Rico
