  • I've gotten the request several times about making a video for how I catch my bait for sheepshead/drum, so I thought I'd use this recovery time after surgery to still be productive!
    Book a guided kayak fishing trip with me: 7thevanfishing...
    Below are affiliate links if you would like to support the channel! I use this gear EVERY SINGLE time I catch mud crabs!
    Mud crab catching ESSENTIALS:
    Boots I wear in thick mud and for walking on oysters: amzn.to/3PQk1GH
    Bait Bucket: amzn.to/3b73PCc
    basic gloves thick enough for handling oysters and mud crabs: amzn.to/3PMyq6U
    (inspect gloves for rips and tears after each use. They do not last forever! These gloves have the MINIMUM amount of thickness for oysters and mud crabs).
    NOTE: I'm still not 100% sure how to completely tell the difference between mud and stone crabs. If I caught a stone crab in this video, please put it in the comments and correct me. Try to abide by all of your local state laws.
    If you like what you see, please consider subscribing! Many more videos in the future soon to come!

    Excellent video! I've seen these little guys many times but never realized they never realized they were so attractive to the fish we want to catch. Thank you!

    If you have water available when you catch the mud crabs rinse them off in the bait bucket. That makes ID much easier.

    You're giving up the secrets!! Lol. Good stuff man. Oh and mud crabs have notches in the carapace right outside the eyes. Thats how I learned to tell them apart. Legs are covered in mud usually.

    Do you know how these mud crabs might last overnight? I was thinking maybe throw in a freezer block or a frozen bottle of water for a next day fishing trip.

    • @7thevanfishing
      @7thevanfishing  6 месяцев назад

      They’ll last a couple of days at least as long as you keep a little bit of water in the bucket and keep them out of the sun and cool!

    Thanks for sharing!! I didn't even know about mud crabs!!! I'll be on it 🤙🏼 Do you ever freeze them for off season?

    • @7thevanfishing

      I haven’t tried that but I might this time!

    • @jmnorris50
      @jmnorris50 2 года назад +1

      I've frozen them before. They lose a lot of their durability when you thaw them back out. BUT if you're using them in the winter, the trash fish will be gone so that might not be a big concern.

      @@jmnorris50 awesome thanks for the input man! I might try to save some then as some backup bait for reds in the winter!

    Does it have to be under oyster beds to find them ?

    • @7thevanfishing
      @7thevanfishing  2 года назад +2

      Not necessarily. That’s just where I find them most of the time and the easiest place to look for them. You can also find them under rocks, by marsh grass-lines, and a few other places as well but oyster beds is where they most commonly will be.

    So how do you store mud crabs?

    • @7thevanfishing
      @7thevanfishing  2 года назад +1

      You can store them in any bucket/container with holes poked through it. Keep them out of the sun and out of any possible rain and keep a little bit of saltwater in it and it should keep them alive for a couple of days at least.

    • @ronwells6182
      @ronwells6182 2 года назад +1

      @@7thevanfishing I know that’s true with fiddlers but seems portions of their life cycle are at sea. I’ve put about three dozen in a 5 gallon bait bucket (with holes) submerged off the end of my pier so will see how it goes. Not much published on this.

    Its a shame your so concerned about the law when our constitution protects our right to forage for food.
    If you changed your status from Citizen to State National you dont need big poppa goverments permision for anything.
    Look up usc 18-242. What these law ENFORCERS are doing is caled color of law.
    Check it out if you care to be free and not a slave to admiralty law my friend.
