Sheepshead Fishing with NEW LURE ** MASSIVE SHEEPSHEAD HERE **

  • I used this new lure to try to catch sheepshead, will it work? In this video I head out sheepshead fishing on the upper Gulf Coast. I first used Fiddler crabs to locate sheepshead around bridges. While inshore fishing around these bridges with Fiddler Crabs for sheepshead, we found SEVERAL solid inshore fish and tons of sheepshead!!

    You can get by with 12 lb line, but put a 3 or 4 foot piece of clear plastic air tubing above swivel to protect line from barnacles. Line can slide through tubing when it gets against a piling.

    • @southernsalt
      @southernsalt  Год назад +18

      That’s actually a really good idea that I’ve never heard of before. Thanks!!

    • @TridentDriver
      @TridentDriver Год назад +9

      Seems like you would totally defeat the purpose of the small line. If your goin to put tubing over your line you may as well use a 120 lb mono leader

    • @southernsalt
      @southernsalt  Год назад +6

      The leader would still be exposed. He’s talking about using tubing around the knot which’s where most of my line drag occurs.

      My newest rod is a 75cm two-section telescopic rod that fits in my small backpack, it’s solid enough, it feels great and it looks great, especially with the reel I bought for it, colours match nicely 👍
      I’m forty now, but since my early twenties my gear has just kept getting smaller and lighter, and the level of fun I’ve had with it gets better and better, lol
      For me, not only is it more fun feeling every little movement, but you know that if you hook a big one you’re really going to have to work hard to land it 👌 🎣

    I've been inspired, I'm going to the Gulf coast this summer, and I'm going to catch sheepshead on my fly tackle, flies, I'll probably tie a fiddler crab fly, and some sand worm and sand flea artificials..

    Hey I live in Beaumont, Tx. Sheepshead are my favorite fish to eat. I like to use 30 lb braided line. I primarily fish from the bank so I prefer the heavier line to get the fish away from structure. I really enjoyed your video and look forward to watching your future content.

    Enjoyed your video. Haven't done a lot of inland fishing on the gulf side mostly down way south around Key Largo (Card Sound bridge). Good fish down there but from my experience not quiet as large as yours. We only kept what we could eat while fresh. To stock the freezer we went for larger slabs as they last longer in the freezer. Slabs would be anything, amber jacks, snook, grouper, and occasionally a large Jew fish. Hollering from near the mountains in NW ga.

    I fish for walleyes, steelheads, and salmon in Michigan; occasionally, I catch a big catfish. I use 8lb monofilament for everything. It's makes fishing faster and more fun fighting the fish. You just have to be patient; and it requires some finesse.

    I use 15lb braid/15 mono or fluorocarbon for sheeps, and 10braid/20 mono in the flats. I like the Salt Strong Power Prawn Jr with ProCure Shrimp gel on it.

    I fish with 12 to 17 lbs line depending on the situation I fish that day, but I give the fish a fighting chance, I enjoy the fight not just using a broomstick like some do. Fishing is a great past time and enjoyment. My kids and now grandkids now enjoy catching the Convicts.

      @@southernsalt definitely but .most people in this era of fishing go overboard in some many ways from keeping over the limit to just being A holes. I love fishing the bridges also but my passion for Sheepies is Flats around oyster bars while wading in Tampa Bay area.

    I catch all my sheeps head on 10pound braid and 20-25pound leader. I agree with you, lighter tackle is way funner, catches just as much and in reality its lower profile so less spooking fish. Easy peasy.
