Of all the fast-food burger chains, Burger King's Whopper is and has always been my go-to quick food. If I'm not mistaken, they are the only one using an open flame to cook the meat. Everyone else is using a steel grill. At home, what do we use? Either gas or brickett, but either way, this is my favorite. Just watching this makes me want to head out at almost midnight to find one that is still open
In the late 60's or early 70's I we lived a short walk to a burger king. My go to was a double whopper with cheese. I remember it as much bigger than what my granddaughter brought here the other afternoon.
I used to stop at BK on my way home, and pick up two whoppers and an order of fries. Once I got home, I added hot pepper rings, and more ketchup. I don't live near a BK any more, otherwise, I'd still be doing the same thing.
Hold the pickles hold the lettuce special orders don't upset us all we ask is that you let us serve it your way. Barry Manilow wrote the lyric and jingle for Burger King.
As a kid growing up in Miami, Florida, where BK was founded, there were basically two burger chains--Royal Castle that sold small, square burgers that became known as "sliders," and Burger King. The Whopper was exactly the opposite of the Castleburger--big with all kinds of toppings instead of chopped fried onions and a pickle slice. Burger King was born the year after I was, and remember eating those Whoppers as soon as my hands would fit them. They sponsored a kid's television program hosted by a character named Skipper Chuck. It was a popular thing to have birthdays celebrated as the studio participants in the show. One highlight in my memory was their Whopper-eating contest where a few kids would compete. At a televised birthday occasion I actually ate THREE Whoppers in the five minute limit and came in second--at nine years old. Years later, as McDonald's came to Miami and drove Royal Castle out business, I tried a Big Mac and hated it. It was tasteless. I could NOT understand why places, like Wendy's, couldn't figure out how to apply direct fire to a beef patty. I still like that slightly charred flavor on those damned burgers!
I remember in the 1950s - 1960s when the burgers fell of the grill into a sauce of what seemed to be ketchup and finely ground pickles and was very sweet. You could smell the burgers cooking when you walked in 5he door!
Hadn't been to a BK in years. Recently stopped into one in mayfield heights OH and was starving. Ordered a double whopper w/ cheese and was absolutely shocked at how delicious it was. I was like "has the whopper always been this good?" Bow that i know they recently improved the quality it all makes sense.
I had my first burger King whopper and fries last week in decades. Since diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, these are pretty much off my menu. No junk fook. I ate that meal with moans and groans of sheer bliss. The fries? Beat any I ever ate. Ahhhhh
My biggest complaints are they rarely come hot, often cold and they don’t season the meat enough, bland. I have to unwrap and add salt. The cold business is the worst, otherwise it might be a great burger.
My opinion = I am an old guy. years ago burger king used gas flame broilers. The burgers were kissed with the flame and were delicious. They put the burgers in a steam warming drawer in the bun without the fixings. This would steam bun and make it delicious.. When you ordered one they would microwave it a few seconds and top it your way. It was hot and delicious. But that was costing them too much. They converted to electric flame broilers and the flame comes from splattered grease that ignites during the cooking. This adds that cooked by a burning plastic milk jug flavor that we all taste today. It is always served cold. No microwave anymore. Costs too much. I miss the good old days 😪.
I love Whoppers, best burger EVER 👍 ~ I love the char grill taste, the fresh buns and produce👌 For a extra kick put some slice fresh jalapenos YUM, Ours closed down 😒 ~ I miss you Burger King!
I ordered drive-through Whopper with cheese and they conveniently forgot the cheese. Twice! I think they were counting on me getting down the road and not be able to turn back. I called them out. To me, it wasn't forgetfulness, it was theft.
I think it's great that cheese is optional. First, a burger doesn't have to have cheese for me to enjoy it. Second, I can use my own fat free cheese slices and low the fat content of the burger. Still fattening, but regular cheese does add a lot of unhealthy fat. For those who are thinking I can just request that they leave off the cheese, I would say that I'm paying extra then for something I don't want to eat.
@@drjonesey5 Five Guys isn’t really fast food it’s like a step above fast food, and it’s expensive. It’s more of a sit down restaurant, like a diner. Burger King is good food for your money.
(I was a former BK manager) Yes the burgers are flame broiled but they sit in a steamer for some time after that where they can lose that flame broiled freshness.
IFFFF the burgers and other sandwiches EVER had the fresh vegetables that are shown on posters and tv, the food would probably actually be delicious - but the real food is never that size or that fresh - and never hot. As far as the patty goes, I find it hard to believe they use a microwave because the burger is never even warm and certainly not hot. I don't know about YOUR BK, but the buns at mine have no flavor and the texture is more like cardboard than a bun. And that is a real shame, because despite all the issues I listed above, you still have a flame broiled patty and THAT is what makes BK a step up from the other burger joints - the sub-par vegetables are tolerable, but the Bun is a real disappointment. I have always thought it sad they they make a burger that stands out from the competition and then they ruin it with a cheap bun.
Gotta agree with this. The same kinda goes for mcdonalds. Everyone says these fast food joint suck and taste like cardboard. But they're actually quite tasty if you're lucky enough to get fresh food. But while I know to show up at 10:00 to get fresh mcdonalds, I don't know when to show up at burger king to get a good whopper
Especially if freshly made, nice and juicy, I always have double patty. I love BK, because they allow us to modify our food to our liking, like adding onions to chicken original sandwich, other competitors like Mc*ee;s wanna charge you for any topping besides what already comes on it.
I do not go there often, but when I do I get a Whopper if I am not so hungry, and if I am very hungry I get a Double Whopper. Nothing else is good, even when they offer new items. Often I pick up a Whopper at Burger King, and on the way home stop by McDonald's to get the fries.
1983: I was the Whopper eating champ for a High School charity drive. Two Whoppers, two large fries, two large Cokes... 2.18 seconds... A bit faster than the semi-finals the week before. I don't condone gluttony, but I still love Whoppers to this day and maybe have them a couple times a year.
The flame grilled taste is why I go to Hungry Jacks (the Aussie subsidiary of Burger King, named differently for historic trademark reasons) and don't go to McDonalds.
Maybe because many of the negative comments are from people who remember when their offering was quite good. Their quality control has gone down the tubes and even if they get a lot better they will still be below their once high level of excellence.
I like the Whopper....haven't eaten that in a while.....the last time I was where, I kept telling the person taking my order that I was not interested in buying anything else.....After answering that question 3 times, I finally just waked out......I don't go for the hard sale and that's what they tell their people to do

I never buy a burger elsewhere, and sometimes I drive half an hour just to get this burger. Ty BK ❤
Burger King's biggest overall attribute is that it flame-grills its burgers instead of frying on a greasy griddle. McDs and Wendy's should also have cooked their patties like this from the get-go.
I was pretty amazed by how close the Impossible Whopper's taste is to the beef version. It's not much healthier, though. The Impossible Whopper has 30 fewer Calories, 6g less fat, and 80mg less cholesterol than the beef Whopper, but it has about 250mg more sodium.
I think it's kind of funny. I keep scratching my head as to why a vegetarian would want to eat something that imitates the food they dispose. I guess it's kind of like a former alcoholic drinking Near Beer???
I tired the Impossible Whopper expecting something fantastic. Instead I got something that seemed to be over cooked and grainy? Crunch balls? Never went back.
It's not about being healthier, it's about having an option for people who don't eat meat. My wife works for an animal shelter and won't eat land or air based animals. The fact that she loves the Impossible burger makes a trip to Burger King doable.
I have been eating healthy, intermittent fasting and exercising for a little over 4 months. I lost 71 lbs and reduced my bmi from obese to overweight and finally to normal. I had 2 things in mind if I could hit my goal…a Thanksgiving where I feast and a cheat meal of a whopper with cheese. Thanksgiving morning I hit my goal and feasted. The following week I maintained. The Friday after I had my cheat meal, a whopper with cheese, fries and ghost pepper nuggets. It was amazing and worth the 4 month wait.
The reason why Burger King and McDonald’s burgers are so dry and tasteless is because you don’t get them fresh off the grill anymore. I’ve worked in both restaurants and both pre-cook their burgers and then put them in a warming bin. When they fill an order they take out the burgers and reheat in a microwave, which ruins them. And they do this whether you want cheese or not.
In Queensland Australia they call Burger King Hungry Jacks and it used to be free to get heavy tomatoes or lettuce. Yes also in Australia the ice cream machine is always broken and think there is a reason behind it :)
I worked at burger back in the 80's. I think the reason the burger had that delicious grilled taste was that you weren't allowed to clean the conveyor grill & it gave the patties that distinctive outdoor grill flavor
@@pjimmbojimmbo1990 the grill is over constant flame. It is basically burnt fat. There is very little chance it came from the meat unless they held it too long. It is more likely from the lettuce or tomato. (Edit: grill inside of the broiler. Its flame broiled. Sry)

The Whopper is very delicious these days.Actually back in 1975 I used to eat 2 everyday for lunch. Jewish & obviously I'm not I was volunteered to hold the fort. Customers were not a problem even during lunch. After the holiday back to my assigned store. It was years later when I had the same lunch...different state & it was barely eatable. Now some 20-30 yrs. later I'm enjoying BK again. It took deep hunger pangs & a hope that someone had their head screwed on right. Amazing how many companies like Burger King & where I live now 2 Wendy's can snatch defeat from the jaws of victory & think that idea is Aces. And my how many complete idiots think following the Peter Principle is a good way to run a business. No wonder so much junk in made in America these days. Planned obsolescence . I wish BK would go back to shredded Iceberg lettuce instead of the single "Oak Leaf" the currently use... also some BK Restaurants use very cheap Brand X Ketchup and Mayo (not Heinz and Hellman's), and since those 2 ingredients give the Whopper is predominant taste, it tastes cheap and "off". Why is 5 Guys so successful at the Game BK invented? Quality, FRESH ingredients cooked to order... just like BK used to do... when the Whopper was only 49 Cents.
I used to love Whoppers and Whataburger when they could keep from over-cooking the meat to give me medium-rare burgers. Whataburger only cooked on a flat-top grill, so I would tell them to just heat it up, not cook it. That's the best way to cook and eat any beef, without drying it out and leaving the tasty juices in the meat, not the grill.
Ok, I had to stop this 5 minutes in. It's 10:15PM and I live almost 10 miles from the nearest BK, and my mouth is watering. Damn it! Why did you make me watch this?

I like my food hot when I eat, that's why I'm always disappointed with fast food burgers or any other fast food sandwiches for that matter. By the time you get your food and sit down to eat the damn burgers are cold. If they could figure a way to keep the burger hot, I'd eat them more often, the flame broiled Whopper was always my favorite.
Unfortunately they don’t always use ripe tomatoes and you get the core of the tomato in your sandwich their onions are left to soak in water and they become pungent to the taste it’s not as she’s describing on the video
They don't soak the onions in water. They come sliced and in a bag. What's happening is that if the manager orders too many bags of onions, they start to get "watery" and that changes the taste of them. They're "standard" for tomatoes is what's called a 5x5 lug tomato, in stage 7 of ripeness. That basically means the tomatoes should be ripe and juicy. But every winter I always noticed the tomatoes aren't as ripe as they're suppose to be and they're hard. It's sort of the same thing as what happens when buy them at the grocery store.
I was at a Burger King when the ice cream machine had broken on a summer weekend. I asked the manager why couldn't he get ice cream from a nearby grocery store to serve temporarily. He said he couldn't do that. He said the same thing applied to onions. If the onions ran out, they couldn't go to the grocery store. They could only serve the onions from their supplier. I believe that the onions have a distinctive taste. I believe that is what makes Whoppers so good.
Our go to joint many many moon ago I remember riding my bike to gandy blvd in tampa fl and getting whoppers once twice a week as a kid. Back then it wasn't to far from the bridge Im sure it's no longer there.
One time I bought a Whopper and a Whataburger and switched the meat. I like the Whopper's flame-grilled meat. But Whataburgers have better toppings. So I thought by combining the flame-grilled meat with the superior toppings, I'd have the ultimate fast-food burger. But oddly enough, it really didn't make a difference. Whoppers are great as is, as are Whataburgers. But putting the best of each just doesn't work. Go figure.
Now if you want a Plain ole Burger with no taste, go to the building with the Golden Arches, Pretty Bland Burgers. Kind of like Eating Paper, nothing to it.
I just tried Whataburger recently for the first time and the burgers taste just like Burger King’s and the fries tasted like McDonald’s fries. Interesting combination. They probably get the food from the same suppliers as Burger King McDonalds.
The Whopper is the best American fast food burger, minus your homemade version..You know the one!!!!! The Whopper has been around a long time and is still going, and for good reason. Juicy from greasy or Juicy from toppings, I'll have the toppings,TY.
Very skeptical…last time Burger King tasted good was in the 70’s-early 80’s when they made burgers at the time of ordering, flame grilled patty placed on top of condiments, bun, cheese melted naturally, no need for microwave or electric warming trays. Grilled burger juice mixing with toppings…old school delicious! Will have to try them back, though strong feeling will still be lacking just like Carl’s Jr.
Even McDonald's was a bit better back then, prior to switching to heating trays for the patties. They used beef fat for their fries as well, which apparently is less unhealthy (surprisingly) than the franken-oil they use now, which is hydrogenated vegetable oil.
@@ericfan9149 Yes, McDonald’s also shrunk the size of their patties. Getting technical, they used to add the dehydrated onion between the patty and the bun, not mixed with the other condiments (cheeseburger, hamburger) started doing this bout 1985. Ketchup and mustard was spread on the buns with a spatula type utensil, not the modern “squirter gun”. Circa 70’s and earlier? Ice cream soft serve switched to yogurt type in late 80’s? Oh well, can’t stop change, but be lucky to experience old school and pass the knowledge on.

Just watching this makes me want to head out at almost midnight to find one that is still open
Wendy’s is pretty good too, I like my burgers medium well and dripping grease
In the late 60's or early 70's I we lived a short walk to a burger king. My go to was a double whopper with cheese. I remember it as much bigger than what my granddaughter brought here the other afternoon.
I used to work for them when I was younger. The Jr. was my before I got on the clock snack. & I'd take a Triple Whopper home, but "I did it my way"
I used to stop at BK on my way home, and pick up two whoppers and an order of fries. Once I got home, I added hot pepper rings, and more ketchup. I don't live near a BK any more, otherwise, I'd still be doing the same thing.
Wow! A Triple Whopper?
I feel bloated after I eat a double whopper.

I was an electrician, they use to use gas broilers, back in the day, I personally replaced and wired the new electric broiler

Ahhhhh

Candy bars and potato chips yes, but hamburgers?
Diabetes means cutback on sugar, though.

My biggest complaints are they rarely come hot, often cold and they don’t season the meat enough, bland. I have to unwrap and add salt. The cold business is the worst, otherwise it might be a great burger.
THANK YOU! Why, oh why is that considered normal? I had to scroll way down imo to see someone comment on that
My opinion = I am an old guy. years ago burger king used gas flame broilers.

When was cheese ever optional on a burger? BK wants another $1 for a slice of cheese on the Whopper. What a racket.
That is the reason the whopper is in fact the worst of all the staple burgers in fast food.
For those who are thinking I can just request that they leave off the cheese, I would say that I'm paying extra then for something I don't want to eat.
i never have a cheeseburger where the cheese is melted because of lactose intolerance. If I put cheese on a burger, it's a cold slice of cheese.

(I was a former BK manager) Yes the burgers are flame broiled but they sit in a steamer for some time after that where they can lose that flame broiled freshness.
Yes I worked there also they also dont mention they microwave the patties when they come out of steamer !
Had one the other day for the first time in a long time. It was not only very good, but it was huge. Really enjoyed it. Well done BK.
Especially if freshly made, nice and juicy, I always have double patty. I love BK, because they allow us to modify our food to our liking, like adding onions to chicken original sandwich, other competitors like Mc*ee;s wanna charge you for any topping besides what already comes on it.

I love a good whopper from time to time.
They offered a veal sandwich back then that I loved.
That is probably why I got sick after eating my first and only Whopper
@@pjimmbojimmbo1990 the grill is over constant flame. It is basically burnt fat. There is very little chance it came from the meat unless they held it too long. It is more likely from the lettuce or tomato.

It was years later when I had the same lunch...different state & it was barely eatable. Now some 20-30 yrs. later I'm enjoying BK again. It took deep hunger pangs & a hope that someone had their head screwed on right. I used to love Whoppers and Whataburger when they could keep from over-cooking the meat to give me medium-rare burgers. Whataburger only cooked on a flat-top grill, so I would tell them to just heat it up, not cook it.
The Burger King near my house has been good since I could remember which is 2000. Only thing I miss are the old fries.

True, it was a different burger back then
Even McDonald's was a bit better back then, prior to switching to heating trays for the patties. They used beef fat for their fries as well, which apparently is less unhealthy (surprisingly) than the franken-oil they use now, which is hydrogenated vegetable oil.
@@ericfan9149 Yes, McDonald’s also shrunk the size of their patties.
