What gear or software you need for animation is going to depend on what you want to create. some apps are great for beginners like Flippa Clip and other animation programs are geared more toward professionals and can cost a lot more. Same with much of the hardware out there.

I'm so glad this wasn't just "here are the free/cheap options! You don't need the pro-tools at all!"
Nothing is more frustrating than having illustrators tell me, as an animator, that their illustration software is just as good at animation just because they like drawing in it more.
Frame-by-frame is great, but draining, if you're not getting paid for it.
Learning how symbols and tweens work is such a time saver.
Also, I like how you mentioned using the Adobe suite in conjunction with itself, rather than just the one-off of just Animate. I feel like that's something a lot of Adobe haters don't mention; a lot of the apps work together in ways that would be more expensive if you payed for each function individually.
This video was so good.

Yup I can't even imagine drawing frame by frame for simple stuff like moving a head from left to right😂😂
I made frames in procreate
it doesn't support tweening
help me out
can I export them to another app and then tween?
I would do frame to frame since I am home school so I have all day :D
@@manansoni8774 hey did you find a solution regarding it

When your biggest dream is becoming an animator since fourth grade but you are still drawing/animating with your mouse. And only thing you can do is watching amazing videos like this. Man, you and your channel is absolutely perfect and needs more attention. Thanks for giving us always good stuff💜

Love the video as always. What I like most about your videos is you are not afraid to look at cheap or free alternatives. When pointing people to a pen display you are honest and point people to budget friendly alternatives and are not pushing Wacom first (looking at you here Marc Brunet). I use either a Huion kamvas pro 16 , Surface pro 2017, or my new Samsung tab s7+ for drawing. I have used Wacom but for the money no longer find them worth it (unless you REALLY want a 4k pen display).
I was totally thinking about doing a 2D animation with Blender while watching this! I'm glad to know it's possible, even if the learning curve is steep. I've played around with it before and it does seem daunting at first, but I guess that goes hand in hand with having so many tools at your disposal in one program.
Everyone: We want to do amazing things for free without any effort!
Brad: ...So...this is going to be expensive, and you are going to have a lot of learning to do
Yea, getting extremely good software doesn't make someone good at drawing instantly , it takes maximum effort
Yeah skill is a requirement, but sometimes an expensive software is just straight up a bad idea. maybe Pencil2D or Krita (free and open source apps) have small animation capacity but that could be all things someone need, and there's OpenToonz that was a software used by Ghibli and became free and open source.
You may buy an expensive pro level animation software, but you may just not use pro level tools in them, it makes more sense to to use a free software especially when you are just starting.
Pencil2D: Simple frame by frame animation with simple drawing capacity
Krita: A great digital art program with great drawing capacity and basic frame by frame animation (is unstable with audio, but you could use a video editor for adding audio)
OpenToonz: Used by Ghibli and became free and open source on 2016, may seem to complex (there's Tahoma2D, a fork (derivation) of OpenToonz, with the goal of being simpler and some more features)

Animating is a different kind of hell.
Learning it may be easy to some, and extremely hard to others.
To me, it's really hard, so using Flipaclip for now is enough, until I'm ready for a payed program.

Lately, I've been thinking about trying out Blender.
In the past, I was a hardcore digital illustrator/graphic designer who wasn't interested in using other programs that were not for my expertise. But, one day, in one of my works at my office, they asked me to make a motion graphic animation; at first, I didn't know how to use After Effects and programs like that and I can't say no. So, I took a deep breath and started to watch tutorials about what is After Effects. And oh boy, I never thought that I could use this app! Ever since then, I expanded my skills and added a new one to my list.
Who knows? Perhaps 3D art could be a new skill that I will add to my resume just like I did with programs like After Effect and Premiere Pro :)
Great overview. I've used Blender for years for 3D work and just now getting into their 2D stuff. For simple stuff I'd stick to Procreate, for more complex, Blender, or Animate. All I really want is Animate on the tablet, iPad or Samsung.
If you want procreate then you need an iPad.
I've been waiting for this!
Brad taught me how to draw and now how to animate. He's quite a phenomenal teacher
This is amazing I was really thinking about animation stuff
I was so curious about this
Thnx Mr brad
Congrats on 500k and thank you for all the help
i was gonna animate some stuff for the first time and you uploaded this... thanks a lot 💕
Thank you very much. I'm just getting started and need all the help I can get!
congratulations on 500k!!🎁🎊🎉
I have been waiting for this for a LOOOONG time man
Same
Congrats on reaching half a million subs, keep up the good work
Congratulations on 500k Brad 🥳
I'd also add OpenToonz/Tahoma to the list. It's a very powerful, free tool, but a little wonky. Also, Krita has a fairly basic animation component. The 2d component of Blender is called Grease Pencil and it's a very powerful tool that has a lot of RUclips tutorials.
wow I'm starting a youtube animation channel, it has always been my dream to animate my own stories so this was helpful, getting hyped now!~
This was helpful. And encouraging. Thank you!

Would you be surprised if I said I use Pencil2D. I use vector mode, the Pencil2D Team try to persuade you not to do this, as they say the tools are still in development.
But I find them awesome to use. I use them for production jobs. My animation past includes using Flash & Moho.
I am totally into Blender and you are right, the learning curve is steep and there are not enough (proper) tutorials out there wich makes it even harder. It is almos based on self teaching. Most tutorials are for 3D and they are awesome...
Hi
Will you like to learn more on animation?
@@dmsub70_giveawayontelegram26 Yes, of course.
Congrats on 500k!!!

Yes!
Yeah I wish Brad would go more in the direction of art and how-tos of software. His drawing tablet reviews are great but I stopped watching them once I actually bought one. More art videos would keep getting my +1 view at least.
Happy 500k Brad!!!!!!!!!!
Woohooooo!!!!
Moho is great, older versions of it are great as well. They also have a debut option of the software that is shrunken down in terms of what it can do, but also has a shrunken price of usually $50. Something to also point out with Moho is that it has finally gotten back into the hands of the company Lost Marble, who started the project when it was Anime Studio. The future is bright with them.
I have some modest skills in animation & I've been wanting to dive back into, & this is really helpful, I've seen some pretty cool short animations done with procreate I was surprised at how well some are able to do using the program in fact some have channels focused around procreate cartoons, I'm planning to get an iPad for procreate mainly to practice digital drawing & painting but I also look forward to trying the animation feature. I have dabbled with blender & you're right the learning curve is steep, thanks Brad.

I personally chose Krita ..and loved that, it can produce some High Quality animations
(frame by frame only)
Really helpful, thanks a ton! :D
Please make a video on how to motivate yourself to make animations
Hmm, that seems like an interesting subject
I can help:
1. Get off youtube and start drawing/sketching first so you know at least a little bit about drawing
2. Dont be lazy. Try, Practice and stop saying you dont know how to do something.
3. If you need to have "motivation" before you have even started, then you dont have enough interest in animation...so do something else. Nothing worth while is instantaneous...it takes discipline to get better.
*Animation takes a lot of time, skill and patience to get good. If you dont have any of those and arent willing to invest in them, you should find something else to do. Making no effort at all is sure way to never get good ...at anything in life
@@avidadolares hmm thanks for this, but i cant get off youtube rn, its a pretty critical stage in my audience growth, im practicing side by side tho
@@TanakaKun69 Then you will have to find time for the other part in learning animation...if you are interested. Its up to how badly you want to learn and are you willing to put the time in....same as everything in life. Other option is to hire someone to make stuff for you, if it is content based.
Brad congrats on 500k
But what about Krita? It's mostly for illustration but it does have some basic tools for animation AND it's free
He said he didn't want to list every single app, but he did show it at 3:05. There's also an info card linking to the video. *I know this is from months ago, mostly saying it for people just now watching.
Nah Krita is not as good as OpenToonz it doesn't have all the features you need for animation but it is the best free digital art software.
Great vid, I'm a heavy Animate user. If you want to do motion graphics After Effects is a good option. Maya student version is free
Congratulations on 500k

I mostly use procreate for animating, and to put it together, I use Vita, or CapCut, or Cute cut
Hi Brad, can you please try the TCL NXTPAPER for sketching outdoors? Their reflective display technology is supposed to be responsive like standard lcd and reducing eye strain like eink, but does it suffer from glare issues outdoors and have they got the stylus features implemented well?
Hi Brad! thanks to your video I was able to put together a target for my learning journey, and I was wondering if you know a mentor or a boot camp that you'd recommend to learn procreate, toon boom, and Maya? I intend to give it a full time dedication

That app is impressive but I perfer Blender because it provides more versatile options.
@@turboanimationchannelhey I know I’m a year late but can I get that app on my tablet? And is it beginner friendly
I love Blender! I use it for 3d modelling, sculpting, for 3d printing and even as cad for my cnc. i love it!
But unfortunately i need to sit on my pc to use it. There is no app for android or ipad. So, seems like i can draw the pictures on my androit tablet (thank you for the help of choosing the galaxys7fe, with your videos) and then put it o. The pc ro put it in blender for animation. Yea, you are right blender takes quite some time to learn. I bought already several online courses and still just scratching the surface. Blender is so versitile, but so great!
Tysm for this video😍
thank you brad for including blender.
I'm studying animation and have fallen in love with TVPaint. Got a great discount, the community is really friendly and helpful plus you can also run the full pro version on the Galaxy tab S10+ and it is rock solid. Toon boom storyboard is wonderful haven't played with Harmony. Grease pencil is insane. Weird but fun.
Edit. Opentoonz is pretty cool too but for my money TVPaint is the winner. Warning it can be a little eccentric in how it works or very Amiga.
How much?
Its help me, thank you so much 😍
Do you use the ipad as a tablet for drawing in adobe animate? Or only procreate? For example you can use sidecar on the mac to turn an ipad into an input display. But I'm not sure if the pressure sensitivity connected to the computer is as good as with procreate directly?
4 years into blender now
It is not as hard as you think especially if you are interested or you have hyperfocus (some people can stay on something for hours but they get easily bored from others)
Now you can do 3d animation, but you can do 2d animation too! Or VFX, CGI level VFX, you can edit videos or audio, and any thing related to 3d so you don't need an external app to improve your model.
Hyperfocus only works if you understand what you're doing.
Having ADHD and trying to learn something while not understanding won't activate hyper focus.
I have a question can you suggest a 3rd party stylus that has pressure sensitivety and is relatively cheap ?
Hey Brad - another great video! Could you please tell me what mic that is you are using? Thanks!

Which ipad animation app is user friendly for adding and syncing your own music to? I need to add music and also sync it to match certain frames in the animation.

You said the best when you talked about iPad Pro and regular iPad something like tools don’t make you draw better.
I gave a friend’s kid, Jr. High age, an old old Wacom drawing pad which I hardly could find the driver. She made some simple small animations with it on Windows that I didn’t know how.
For the people who are not fortunate but have iPad, FlipaClipa can do a lot. Friends and family will be surprised that is a good start.
Right after the squarespace sponsorship part, I got a squarespace add.
I've just been filling up notebook after notebook of random drawings, comics, shorts, even fight scenes, but I recently went from stick figures to more realistic figures...kind of, I am *really* inspired by Nec But Animator, I think his animations are really cool, and I want to be able to make my own
I just downloaded an animation app with 0 animation knowledge just for fun and I drew a couple of slides with sketches and I already see why everyone loves animating. It's so satisfying.
What app on what device?
Can you give me the name?

Good that you have shout-out to blender , it is free and so great
About 8 years ago, I was using Blender to create Live Wallpapers for Android. At the time, I was trying to learn how to develop for Android, and that ended up taking a back seat, to me trying to learn how to use Blender. Haven't messed with Blender for awhile. I'd have to learn most of it over again.
I believe Blender has a 2D animation feature now. and you can kind of use both 3D, and 2D animation together to create some awesome effects.
