That default backspace mapping makes perfect sense to me. It’s actually how I’ve remapped my MacBook keyboard. Caps lock is redundant in my opinion. Getting used to it there means you can use that same remapping on any standard keyboard and it’s the single best remapping I think anyone can do. I also have one other remapping from the strange symbol key below Escape on the touchbar, which I of course remap to escape. I own two. One is a Ergodox EZ with tilt legs. The other is a self-build from a Massdrop order (super fun to build your own). One as brown switches for office use. The other has blue "clicky" switches for home use. The absolute best keyboard I've ever owned - and I've owed a lot of keyboard is my time. The support for the Ergodox EZ is also brilliant. A year after I had it, one of the switches intermittently stopped working. I emailed them and without quibble they said they will definitely send me a new replacement. The longest part of the support email discussion was if I wanted to switch to different key switches or stay with the brown ones. :-)
@@therealgraeme would you say it's a fit for writing code? (lots of up-down-left-right, Ctrl+key, Ctrl+Fn, Ctrl+shift+arrows, PgUp, PgDn, parans, brackets etc. ). Thanks
@@andiarpo6569 Yes, I'm a coder too (Java and Delhi) and use it at work and home for that purpose. The Ergodox is obviously different, but only took me a week or two to customise the keyboard layout to suit my needs (with only minor tweaks as time goes by). For a start, I type on the Dvorak layout, so the default Qwerty is a no go for me. ;-) The Ergodox EZ website has 1000's of community layouts to browse, clone and customised. Many are tagged with various programming languages or tools.
If you buy this keyboard and you're a touch typist, make sure to type on a normal, staggered (i.e. non-linear) keyboard every so often, otherwise you'll find it impossible to properly touch type on a normal keyboard again! I exclusively used the Ergodox at work for the first few months of owning it and was unable to use normal keyboards. But I later began to use my laptop at home quite regularly and I'm now thankfully able to use both layouts.
haha i use a redox which is also a split board, only thing annoying about going back to a staggered layout is having one option for my thumb: space. I keep hitting the spacebar when I mean to hit backspace
@@CripplingDuality I now have two ergodox keyboards, and none from Kinesis. I would like to try a keyboard with the dish shaped key areas, but I think I'd rather go for a fully custom keyboard than a less configurable one.
so cool to see soo much tech sold by adafruit in this keyboard, neopixels, attiny, would love to see the inards. its time to make the janky version with a 3d printer to make the frame. and with all the projectors you got, use one of the cheaps ones to swap the led module with a uv one. i just got my own hence the idea. i am working on making an sls printer kind of deal. any way, that can give you the higher quality stuff you will see from formlabs but with square pixels. have to use a laptop or something to change output to monochromatic, get some resins, etc.
Wow. Look great for a hand cam on stream. As an artist, I can see using one of the keyboards individually for dedicated switches and macros just for the programs I use. I'd say...the only thing that would knock it out of the park, in the gamer sense, include a dedicated thumbstick for movement in place of WASD. It'd be a neat touch to have more precise analog movement like the left thumbstick on a game controller in combo with your existing mouse.
With all that customisation available I'd like to see another video on this from Taran's perspective. Is this a good alternative to multiple keyboards and Lua scripting for those less scripting inclined?
An unfortunate problem that I ran into while dealing with Ergodox is poor customer care. My wife attempted to buy me a keyboard for my birthday, shelled out the money, and was going about the order, then was informed that the shipper could end up charging her whatever they wanted in brokerage fees. With no control and having been hit with brokerage fees of over $100 in the past she decided to cancel the order. The problem came that they didn't cancel the order, they sent back a payment. For any international buyer, this means losing ~$40 in fees. If they just cancelled the payment the fees don't accumulate. If that wasn't enough they proceeded to belittle and throw insults at my wife when she questioned their practice. If this was just an employee it would be one thing, but the owner also took time to send a message indicating their lack of care. Since then I made my own for half the price. Save some money, buy the parts get someone to put it together.
If you get into the ergo mech community you'll find that there are tons of options at various price points, with different layouts, amounts of keys, and more or less intense columnar stagger. There are so many options, but it's totally worth it. The ergodox is the mainstream expensive option!! And even that is great.
I got one for stenography because it was the cheapest option that wasn't always sold out. If you need it for steno, just get one. If you need it for any other reason, just get something else
It would be sweet if LTT did a review for the Keyboard.io "heirloom quality" ergonomic keyboard. About the same price, completely open source firmware, wood body and backlit keys.
I bought a set of the wrist rests when I picked my ergodox ez years ago. I used them exactly once before they went into my desk drawer, never to see the light of day again. For me, suspending my wrists over the the desk surface is much more natural as I've done it with every keyboard I've ever owned. I've been through 11 layout iterations myself, overall for me this is the best keyboard on the market by a long shot.
Omgg yes. Rbg underglow. I've wanted this to exist for ageesss. Instead I've had to have an awful little led strip underneath it with a hole into the keyboard for power and looks awful. I hope the big brands knows for rgb (mainly corsair and razer I think) join onto this trend and make it an actual thing to buy on a normal keyboard
MaraudingMaster ah yeah that looks nice. Doesn't seem like it would have the best build quality and I have lots of corsair things and I like the synchronisation of the products
Jessentis Corsairs have a notorious low build quality compared to regular mechanical keyboards and suffer from shorts or key chatter very easily. They also don’t have a standard key layout so replacing the thin ABS keycaps on them is a lot harder. I can guarantee you this will last you a lot longer than a Corsair. At the expensive of synchronization however.
Can I ask why you want the under glow? I have one of these with the LEDs underneath, but I never turn them on. I got it from eBay rather than having to sort out import tax.
I've always liked ergodox. It's nice to see them go a bit more mainstream than their enthusiast offerings. I'm hoping some of the features found in the EZ make there way back as included extras on the build your own configs.... Yes I really do just want those rgb lights.
love LTT bc it helped me so much with computer stuff and learned me like this channel is better than my teacher love it and ill allways remember everything keep up Linus!
Hey guys, are you planning on covering Keyboard.io? it was a Kickstarted open source ergonomic keyboard, currently still backlogged but shipping. Looks pretty good, and costs about the same as the decked out version of this board (but comes with all the goodies).
James, nice layout man. Backspace and delete belong togetha 4eva. Linus should have said people with small hands will only be able to reach the first thumb button. Waiting for a more squished layout. There's some cool modified board layouts on Thingiverse.
Honestly, I just want them to work at getting ergo both good and affordable. I don't really care about the backlit keys and gaming features in that scenario, really. At least not until ergo keyboards become more developed. Seems like ergo keyboards have been slow in general just to get both ergonomics and ease of use handled and then, secondarily, affordable. Though I know these will always be more expensive until the volume goes up.
If you've got a soldering iron, go for the Ergodox Infinity. Unfortunately you have to wait for massdrop, which could take up to 6 months, then another 3 for shipping, but it's super worth it. Always worth the look on people's faces when they look at it.
I mean.....the general...”COMMON” keyboard is just ENOUGH for me.....or anyone in that case....right!? And....some comments gonna be like.....ILL BUY IT YOU F***....I cant do ANYTHING about that...people are monsters in RUclips...”NOT ALL”
Just got one of these a week ago. Great keyboard, EXTREMELY frustrating to get used to and to retrain your brain and muscle memory. I've talked to some people with them and they all said it takes a few weeks to get used to if you're coming from a classic layout.
I've been browsin, inspectin Xmen comics you know I collect them The pens in my pocket - I must protect them. My ergo-nom-ic keyboard never leaves me bored.
There was one that did 5... died during the dot com bust when all the rich dot commers backing it went literally bust. The center had all the standard insert, home etc. plus16 or 18 macro keys, and the left and right side were cupped like the Kinesis boards with a small space inbetween to reduce elbow strain. Each sides pairs magneticly closed together and then both sides would be stood on their ends with the hole with the keys showing facing up and then the middle piece slides in to lock and then it had a nylon strap on the back of that section. Its like razors..eventually someone will build a keyboard which is just one button and you buy 104 of them and 103 tiny cables to put them together
4? haha, no. The future of ergo keyboards is 5 sections. One on each hand, one on each foot and a dental appliance so you can hit the space and shift keys with your tongue.
I purchased one of these about 2 months ago with cherry mx whites. my WPM was maybe 5 on the first day, but after about a week as was exceeding my WPM on staggered keyboards, and after two weeks I could barely use a staggered anymore. This keyboard has ruined me, but I love it.
Are there regular keyboards that offer similar re-arrangement features like this? I love the concept of layered profiles and see it being useful for gaming/editing work etc and this one seems awesome. Also, have you guys used ergonomic keyboards? What do you think compared to regular boards? I’ve tried a few in a local bestbuy but obviously not long enough to adjust/make a fair judgement
Maybe you should try sol split keeb. It' s same as ergodox, but has per key backlight and if my calculations are right, you can buy it for 235$(including case, keycaps and e.t.c.) or there is also a pre-built version and it is funny that pre-built version will cost you 225$. So i would reccomend it to you.
I've been remapping caps lock to backspace for years. It's the one remap that I think everyone should do, think about it, how often do you use backspace? How far is it for your poor pinky to stretch to the original backspace?
Standard keyboard layouts are silly. Your thumb has lots of freedom to move. It can easily press lots of different keys, if the keys are nearby for it to press: just look at any gamepad. It's very good at operating modifier keys like Shift, Ctrl, Alt and others: hold down the modifier with the thumb of one hand while pressing the modified key with the other. But for that to work properly, the modifier keys need to be mirrored on both sides. Now look at a standard keyboard. There are probably two keys within easy reach of each thumb. Worse, one of them is the spacebar, and it's shared between both hands. Space is not a modifier, so the space key doesn't need to be shared any more than you need the ability to type E with either hand. (Actually, having E on either hand might even make some kind of sense as part of some fairly extreme typing-speed layout, but that's another story.) So by not splitting the spacebar the layout is effectively wasting a whole key that could be used for something else. On standard ANSI (US) layouts you only have *one* other thumb input, Alt. European ISO layouts are even worse, because while you have two different thumb modifiers, Alt and AltGr, neither of them is mirrored so they're both broken for touch-typing. Just because it's standard doesn't mean it's not silly. The Ergodox, meanwhile, is bad for two reasons. One is the price, which is justifiable if you have a well-paid job and you type all day, if you want a hot luxury item, or if you have a relevant injury, but is otherwise a pretty silly expenditure. The other is that it still doesn't give you any analogue input for controlling the mouse pointer on the keyboard: no thumbable trackpad, no IBM Trackpoint-style pointing stick or thumbstick. So you'd spend hundreds of dollars and still be flailing your hand back and forth between the mouse and keyboard every time you need to switch between keyboard and pointer actions, which really is silly. The Ultimate Hacking Keyboard ultimatehackingkeyboard.com/ is one board which does better in this respect.
If you check your comments, do check out the ultimate hacking keyboard. I actually thought this was that. It's same as this one if not more but like $220 on Crowd Supply. It is open source too. They are trying backlight too. BTW, it can be used as a normal keyboard because it has connectors for the two halves. And in case you don't want that, you can have add on modules for $55 or the key clusters for $20. The modules and the keyboard layers are geared towards controlling the mouse from the keyboard. Check the UHK out. They do send out pieces for review since a few are floating around the web.
Hey! I have a problem; Well, a few days ago I started building a PC for a friend of mine with a Ryzen 5 1600X, G.Skill Ripjaws V, MSI X370 Gaming Pro, XFX RX580 Core Edition, 120GB WD Green SSD and a 2TB Seagate Barracuda. I put it all together, and it wasn't posting. Nothing. Changed the RAM, used a different GPU (Yes, the HDMI Cable was plugged into the GPU) and so on. Okay, sure. I sent back the motherboard, got it back after a while. Put it all back together, still no post. Different RAM, different everything. The RAM and GOU I tested was Corsair Vengeance and an RX480. Both used in a different PC and are fully functional. With both sets of RAM, the DRAM LED stays on for a second and goes back off. Next Issue, on the PCI-E x16 Slot, when I try to use a GPU on it, the LED doesn't turn on, even though it is supposed so. BUT, the x8 Line worked, still wouldn't post though. Could it be a issue with the ram? None of the CPU Pins are bent. I looked on a RAM list and saw that the G.Skill RAM I used wasn't on it, even though lots of people use that RAM in their Ryzen builds. Would someone be able to help me out here?
Check out the wolfking wolfpad, it's what I use for gaming although it isn't mechanical it does feel lovely. It's also pretty cheap and I would rate 8/10
Good to know, that you can swap swtiches. For someone who doesn't use his keyboard as a weapon of mass desctruction the slide in overall build quiality from this feature is not important. I seriously consider to buy one, or half or ergodox in the future. So i really hoped that at least you could provide some info on usability and ergonomics of this 6 button thumb cluster. Which is the most controversial part of whole design.

What Linus thinks: Expensive=Dank
joe nodden it's less expensive (and good) than the advantage 2
I remember the days when LinusTechTips always uploaded at 3am EST. I would stay up just to see the videos

Ergodox is amazing. With Cherry clears they are a dream
I have heard nothing dank about this keyboard Linus
Techstuff Mania don't self advertise in other's channel, it's rude
@Techstuff Mania yeah.....no. I've had enough of Air Duct Services, I don't need to be listening to more of that.
If you get into the ergo mech community you'll find that there are tons of options at various price points, with different layouts, amounts of keys, and more or less intense columnar stagger.
There are so many options, but it's totally worth it. The ergodox is the mainstream expensive option!! And even that is great.
It's so strange to see Linus without a beard & with gel in his hair...
Ergodox EZ also uses open source firmware, QWK : )
Wooo, glad to see this.
As an owner of an EZ, I love mine!

OH BOI AM I EARLY! HAPPY NEW YEAR GUYS!

didn't know what i was going to say so yeah happy new year HAHAH
Happy late new year for you too.
It's kinda old already

That's really cool. I didn't even know Ergodox was a company, but the boards are very popular.
Look into the Ganss GK87 Pro. It's pretty much what you're looking for.
To each their own. I like accent lighting.
I've always liked ergodox. It's nice to see them go a bit more mainstream than their enthusiast offerings. I'm hoping some of the features found in the EZ make there way back as included extras on the build your own configs.... Yes I really do just want those rgb lights.

Ayyyy we here bro
Hey guys, are you planning on covering Keyboard.io? it was a Kickstarted open source ergonomic keyboard, currently still backlogged but shipping. Looks pretty good, and costs about the same as the decked out version of this board (but comes with all the goodies).
Oh shit I’m early let me think of a joke.
LTT playin csgo.
Garboi Edzel is pretty good, I think the joke would be Linus playing csgo. LTT describes all employees, as LinusTechTips is a company.
Evan Gibeau Then this comment refers to the entire LTT playing csgo, and linus would basically ruin the team completely, so he was technically right
James, nice layout man. Backspace and delete belong togetha 4eva. Linus should have said people with small hands will only be able to reach the first thumb button. Waiting for a more squished layout. There's some cool modified board layouts on Thingiverse.
DANKY DANK TOWN MILLIONAR EROODANKY DANK
Honestly, I just want them to work at getting ergo both good and affordable. I don't really care about the backlit keys and gaming features in that scenario, really. At least not until ergo keyboards become more developed. Seems like ergo keyboards have been slow in general just to get both ergonomics and ease of use handled and then, secondarily, affordable. Though I know these will always be more expensive until the volume goes up.
Plenty of cheaper alternatives out there from Logitech and Microsoft. But less choice.
Look at the Ergodone, a cheaper DIY chinese clone of the Ergodox
Linus isnt the same without Luke.
Reek Linus and Luke were the duo. The tag team of the company.
like a timon and pumba duo, where luke was pumbo, sure. doesnt count
Luke hasnt done anything other than scrapyard war and shit in years. LTT wont be different rofl
Luke is Super boring to watch, every scrapyard wars when they cut to the Luke team it was painful to watch.
where did he went?
If you've got a soldering iron, go for the Ergodox Infinity. Unfortunately you have to wait for massdrop, which could take up to 6 months, then another 3 for shipping, but it's super worth it. Always worth the look on people's faces when they look at it.

(it doesn't have backlight)
Yea, I would never buy a keyboard without a backlight.
The price to pay for interchangeable keyswitches, which could be ultra valuable for customization and maintenance (replacing worn or broken switches)
Just got one of these a week ago. Great keyboard, EXTREMELY frustrating to get used to and to retrain your brain and muscle memory. I've talked to some people with them and they all said it takes a few weeks to get used to if you're coming from a classic layout.
3:15 ... And keyboard. Actually no I guess not as you have to hold it when typing and don't press it once. More like the previous function.
happy new year!!!!
But does it support Linux?
Mystic Bardock LSSGSS i dont know
You remap the keys online and then download the config to flash it to the keyboard using teensy on Linux.
If flashing supporting is supported on linux or if it works to type on linux? Your question is confusing

My ergo-nom-ic keyboard never leaves me bored.
jesus whats next, it can be divided into 4 different sections
There is no jesus ..only harambe
No, that would be silly; The next thing will be individual keys, with individual stands, connected wirelessly and just placed around your table :p
Remind me, how many hands do you have ?
Looks as cool as it looks. It looks shit i think.
The proper ergonomic status which we recommend and will cost you $355.
Throws in LED lighting for $30.
*THAT HELPS ERGONOMICS DOESNT IT*
17 view squad!
Nice
Thank you
Maybe you should try sol split keeb. It' s same as ergodox, but has per key backlight and if my calculations are right, you can buy it for 235$(including case, keycaps and e.t.c.) or there is also a pre-built version and it is funny that pre-built version will cost you 225$. So i would reccomend it to you.
okay ,who fucked up this time
?
r/mechanicalkeyboards aksed for this :D
Didn't think I'd see a Bangladeshi guy here, wassup
They should have an option for a different color rgb to light up for each 'layer'/layout mode.
I think they've since added that
oh cmon for ffs .. i have been writing so much comments!Give me 2 likes at least!!
Edit: thank you Mom
Be a good boy Addie or I'll beat the shit outta you. Your mother can't save you this time.
Your comment has 3 likes, so i've just downvoted you!
I've been remapping caps lock to backspace for years. It's the one remap that I think everyone should do, think about it, how often do you use backspace? How far is it for your poor pinky to stretch to the original backspace?
Has anyone else seen enough of these silly keyboards?
An xD meme they're not silly, a lot of people value the comfort and flexibility of the ergodox.
Luciano M I know that comfort is the appeal of them but they just look awful and they cost and arm and a leg.
@@leocomerford what keyboard do you use
If you check your comments, do check out the ultimate hacking keyboard. I actually thought this was that. It's same as this one if not more but like $220 on Crowd Supply. It is open source too. They are trying backlight too. BTW, it can be used as a normal keyboard because it has connectors for the two halves. And in case you don't want that, you can have add on modules for $55 or the key clusters for $20. The modules and the keyboard layers are geared towards controlling the mouse from the keyboard. Check the UHK out. They do send out pieces for review since a few are floating around the web.

You should check the dygma raise. It's so much better than this one, better lighting and design overall, but it's built on the same principle
Hey! I have a problem;
Well, a few days ago I started building a PC for a friend of mine with a Ryzen 5 1600X, G.Skill Ripjaws V, MSI X370 Gaming Pro, XFX RX580 Core Edition, 120GB WD Green SSD and a 2TB Seagate Barracuda.
It's also pretty cheap and I would rate 8/10
oh boy i love a linos tech dip from 6 years ago
Good to know, that you can swap swtiches. For someone who doesn't use his keyboard as a weapon of mass desctruction the slide in overall build quiality from this feature is not important. I seriously consider to buy one, or half or ergodox in the future. So i really hoped that at least you could provide some info on usability and ergonomics of this 6 button thumb cluster. Which is the most controversial part of whole design.
3:48 Why did my wrists start to hurt while watching this scene.
Glad to see the Ergodox is not dead, and not using phone cables anymore.
