    As an owner of both (though I have an early ergodox, there may have been minor improvements to later shipments) I feel this comparison omits or downplays major differences and overplays minor ones.
    Here are the major differences that I see:
    * Ergodox has 6 keys on the thumb cluster (2x2u, 4x1u), and I found 3 were easy to press. Moonlander has -4x2u- 1x2u, 3x1.5u keys on the thumb cluster, all of which I find easy to press. I think this is mostly due to the angle the thumb cluster makes with the rest of the keyboard, the ergodox isn't angled sharply enough making it awkward to press any keys that aren't near the bottom of the thumb cluster.
    * The thumb cluster on the moonlander tilts! In the down position, the thumb motion is far more natural (the thumb naturally wants to move perpendicular or towards your palm, not away from your palm as a flat keyboard requires). The up position is supposedly better for smaller hands, though looks like it would use an awkward thumb motion. The ergodox thumb cluster is fixed flat.
    And more minor but still relevant differences that were omitted:
    * The ergodox EZ cable plugs into the right half of the keyboard, and is angled to the right. If you want to use your split keyboard as a one-handed gamepad, then this is an annoyance for right-handers. Further, that angles the cable towards the mouse, a further annoyance for right-handers. The moonlander cable plugs into the left half and has a straight plug. In both cases they use standard connectors and can be replaced with one which better meets your needs (though obviously you can't change which half of the keyboard it plugs into).
    * Ergodox is a design that has been around and didn't start with ZSA, so you can find full Ergodox keycap sets. OTOH it uses many relatively uncommon1.5u keycaps. The moonlander uses -entirely 1u and 2u- fewer caps that aren't 1u or 2u, a bit easier if you want to replace some keycaps without getting a full set, though I don't think I've seen a full set for sale from 3rd parties.
    * The moonlander wrist rest comes attached to the keyboard, though it can be folded underneath or removed. This means it responds better to keyboard tilting and tenting. The ergodox wrist rest is a separate item, and wont adjust with your tilt/tent.
    * Adjusting the thumb cluster tilt pretty much requires a hex key (included) on the moonlander. The ergodox tilt/tent can be adjusted purely with thumb screws.
    * There is a tripod mounting kit available for the moonlander. If you want to do something similar with the ergodox, you need to go full DIY, and will have a less sturdy result. True this is niche, but still a difference that may be relevant.
    * The moonlander is better for people on the go. It comes with a carry case, and the wrist rest folds in under. With the ergodox you need to leave the wrist rests behind or allow extra space to pack them. Plus come up with your own carry case, or buy a 3rd party one. It's still viable to travel with the erodox, but if you will do it a lot the moonlander is definitely the better pick.
    * The ergodox housing raises above the switch base level, the moonlander had the switches level with the housing. People will have their own preferences on aesthetics but the moonlander design is easier to clean the dust out and more likely for minor liquid spills to roll off rather than pool in the housing.
    Things that I thought were over emphasized in this comparison:
    * The outside legs on the ergodox aren't really useful. I almost always have them pretty much horizontal. The ergodox is technically more adjustable, but the moonlander gives you around 90% of the adjustability you would actually want to use. As mentioned in the video, the outside legs are available for the moonlander as a separately purchased accessory, though I agree with ZSA that they aren't necessary.
    * The included moonlander cable is usb c to usb c with an adapter for usb a on the computer side. Sure, this is an improvement over the ergodox (usb a to mini usb), but I'm not sure that it warranted that much attention over what is basically a $10 adapter.
    Overall both keyboards are great, and they are more similar than different. I would pick the moonlander over the ergodox for almost all cases though.

      The piano keys on the Moonlander are 1.5u, the "launch any" key is 2u. Either way that may also contribute to it being easier to reach all the thumb cluster keys as you say

    • @shopt6933
      @shopt6933 2 года назад +1

      @@pockster2854 You are totally correct about the piano keys, not sure how I got that wrong. I still think the angle is the bigger factor, the issue I had with the ergodox thumb cluster was definitely about reaching the upper keys. So yeah, probably discount the stuff I say about the moonlander in my second point.

    Sohil, amazing video. Seriously. You speak well, slow, to the point, and you raised very good points. Video quality was amazing; I appreciated the different comparisons so one could truly see the difference between the two keyboards.
    One small thing: I wish you spend a bit more time talking about one of the biggest differences: the thumb area. There are less keys on the moonlander and they are oriented differently. Would have been nice to see what you had to say about that in comparison to the other one.
    Thank you so much!

    I have owned ergodoxez for a few years. It’s the only keyboard I have used since. In fact I have 2, one for home and work. I like it because of the points stated and the amazingly easy key customization. I needed to move keys around because their normal placement bugged my hands.
    I now own a moonlander as well. I like it but I recently went back to the ergodoxez because of tenting. Tenting for me is huge, so I purchased the extra leg for the moonlander. Unfortunately, you can’t tilt the moonlander forward or inverted without it becoming unstable . This is not an issue for the ergodoxez. I need to type how you would play piano with your wrists flat. When you do this, your fingers fall lower than your palm and I find it to be the most natural hand position. If I have a bend in my wrist then that can cause trouble for me. I also use wrist pads to rest my raised palms as well. This is all possible with the ergodoxez , so back to ergodoxez. In fact, I’m falling in love with it again.
    My only question is how could a company that clearly puts so much thought into design make such a colossal screw up on tenting? A little form over function problem I think. I am not the only one either. Look on Reddit and other places and you will see people 3D printing parts to overcome the issue. I think the moonlander could have been the best so far except for this oversight. I feel like the designers turned in the best essay ever and forgot to spellcheck the title. If the maker is reading this, then please fix it! Better yet make a dactyl version. Last but not least, anyone looking for a mint condition moonlander in black?

    Hey, if you tilt the boards at max, which one is more comfortable? I'm thinking about that the moonlander's wrist rests are made of plastic whereas the one's of the ergodox seem to be more soft, yet unconnected to the board which could also be a problem. What's your experience with that? Is the plastic more uncomfortable? Is the unconnected wrist rest an issue for the dox?

    • @SohilPandya1
      @SohilPandya1  3 года назад +7

      When you have it tilted at max, the ergodox rest pad is not quite in line with the rest of the board, mainly because of how high you can adjust the keyboard.
      If you compare that with the moonlander where it's attached to the board, it will always stay in line with the keyboard no matter the position of the tenting.
      With regards to the material, I like them both, no significant difference in terms of the primary job they try to achieve.
      so to answer your questions:
      - no plastic is just fine
      - yes, there is a height gap, but we have not found that to be an issue as we rest my palms on these.
      Hope this helps!

This video was very useful for the extra information and comparison between the two; thanks for going in-depth, and great quality as well! The size difference between the two surprised me, so I'm even more excited to get a Moonlander now considering just how sleek it looks in comparison to the bulkier Ergodox (not that bulky is bad, but each fits a different aesthetic).
    Unfortunately for the Ergodox, I have to say that personally, I hate the rubber wrist rests because I got the black version and they look filthy after just a day or two. Definitely looking forward to the easier-to-deal-with plastic on the Moonlander.

    • @brandon9638

      I'm thinking of getting, but I have my reservations. Based on your experience, how does this compare to a traditional keyboard?

    • @_.gray._
      @_.gray._ 3 года назад +4

      @@brandon9638 I may not be the right person to ask; I went through the several-month transition from QWERTY to Dvorak before I bought the Ergodox, so making the switch to the keyboard itself was child's play in comparison.
      To put this in perspective as best I can, I was typing around 90WPM on a Logitech K780 (rubber-dome, non-mechanical) before I switched, and the switch took me down to about 75WPM until I got used to the spacing between the keys, the feel of the keyswitches (I went with MX Browns), the positioning of each half, key-travel, and, of course, the layout itself. Getting back up to my original speed took me a few weeks of actively practicing (probably around 10-15min a day doing typing tests on top of regular usage), but now I'm typing faster and more comfortably as a result.
      Most of the past few weeks for me, besides actually typing, has been configuring the keyboard layout in Oryx, which is both daunting and fun at the same time. However, there are stock layouts you can go with if you don't want to take the time to configure everything. The only other thing that's interesting about the switch is that you actually want to start with the halves flat on your desk and close together as if they were a normal keyboard, then slowly move them out and tilt them (if you buy the tilt-kit). Believe it or not, the transition can actually be painful if you do it all at once because your body is so used to typing with your hands together.
      Don't get me wrong, I love the keyboard to death, but if you don't want to go through the hassle of learning it, doing some configuring, and having people gawk at it every time they walk past you typing, then the keyboard may not be for you. I would, however, argue that your future self will thank you for putting in the work to reduce strain when typing, because my hands get tired or hurt FAR less often than they did when I used a standard keyboard.

  • @manny_f

    I also have my concerns about that pivot point, definitely a point of failure. And I don't think the new thumb clusters are an improvement over the old ones, which IMO also could have been better. I actually ended up using the keys under the C and V keys as thumb keys, and only ever use the innermost thumb key.

    Great, that this video exists! That is exactly the comparison I needed and I still can't believe that someone has done it. :D
    However, I missed more info about the most important difference for me and it is the ergonomics of the thumb cluster. Ergodox has more keys, but are they all usable and accessible. The moonlander has it's thumb cluster more close to the keyboard so the thumb comes closer to the hand when reaching for them, is it good or bad?

    • @SohilPandya1
      @SohilPandya1  2 года назад

      Great question. Slightly talked about the key layout but nothing explicit about the thumb cluster.
      For me the moonlander thumb cluster is easier to access. But you can probably find comments on this video where the opposite is true for some people. If you have small hands I’d go for the moonlander.

    Thank you for this comparison. I was looking for such a video for a long time. I currently have an Ergodox. I bought it about a year ago, and I use it for my daily job. My biggest complaint with the Ergodox is the high profile and the wrist rests. Besides accumulating a lot of dirt, the wrist rests tend to move when I reach for the outer keys. Also they do not have any tenting profile as the keyboard does. With regard to my previous Thinkpad keyboard the Ergodox causes my wrists to bend up, and this causes me some discomfort. This made me look at the Moonlander as an alternative. Did you notice any difference in the position of your wrists when using the Moonlander w.r.t. the Ergodox?

    • @SohilPandya1
      @SohilPandya1  3 года назад +2

      Hey! I personally prefer the lower profile for the moonlander. I know it may sound weird but I had to adjust my searing a tiny bit when using the ergo due to it being slightly higher profile.
      There is a difference in that the rest will always be in the right place no matter what position you set the moonlander, if you compare that with the ergodox, if you've positioned it higher the rest pad will be much lower as they don't move with the keyboard.
      Hope this helps!

    • @capitanbatata
      @capitanbatata 3 года назад +3

      @@WalterGuillermo I like the Moonlander better.
      The Moonlander is lower than the Ergodox, so this makes a huge difference for me. I also like the fact that the wrist rests are attached, so they are not moving everywhere when I'm typing. The Moonlander's wrist rests were designed with the keyboard, and not added as an afterthought.
      The only issue I found so far is that I cannot used tented: the tenting mechanism uses the thumb cluster. I have medium to large hands, but if I tent the keyboard the thumb cluster ends up in a different plane than the other keys, and this makes it uncomfortable for my to type. So I use the keyboard flat on my desk, which is fine for me.

      As a side note, I ordered mine with the speed silver switches and I really like them. I work as a programmer, and typing in them feels really smooth and does not require me to put the same amount of force to press the keys as I had to put to press the MX brown or blues.

    The apostrophe, quotation mark, equals and plus signs, and curly and square brackets are all essential to a coder, so where do you put them on this layout without making them harder to reach than they are on a standard keyboard? Since IDEs autocomplete closing brackets, that's four characters that are usually right next to your pinky that you will have to move farther away.

      compared to the Moonlander on which I use all three of the big ones, and the red one is a shortcut for taking screenshot for me :D
      Depends on if you have a use case for all 6 of the keys on ergodox. If you can't think of anything then go for the Moonlander! (It will give you more versatility in terms of adjusting the thumb cluster too!)

    Nice review of the Moonlander vs Ergodox keyboards! Two thumbs up! I like these advanced keyboards but many of these new keyboards use USB 3 will not work with KVM switches (emulation). I have one KVM which requires a USB 2 at one of our homes in the USA that can control up to eight computers using just one mouse and keyboard. Linux is my primary operating system (Archlinux and Gentoo). My hope is that one day some keyboard manufacture will design and create a keyboard like Erogodox or Moonlander with either builtin or outside accessories for KM or KVM switching up to (4 to 8) computers with one or many screens like I doing today. On another note I hope the UK ends the lock down soon, I retired almost two years ago from flying big airplanes at a major airline. (I was a captain who hit max age -- I spent sometime in London. Good people.) In Florida in the good old USA the state population NEVER did isolate. My wife and I are refusing to take the vaccine and wear these crazy masks! Be well UK !!...
