  • What do musicians really think about women in rock and feminism?
    How have things changed and how haven't they in the worlds of punk rock and heavy metal?
    If feminism is about equality, what is the REAL shared experience of 99% of rock bands right now?
    Host Christina Rowatt travels with Baltimore feminist hardcore punk band War On Women to the Australian Download Festival to explore a musician's eye perspective of women in rock, the riot girl movement and how the hardcore scene and heavy metal world have evolved. Also features Boston hardcore icons Converge, Judas Priest touring guitarist / producer Andy Sneap, headliners Rise Against and Grammy winner Lzzy Hale of Halestorm (the only woman in history to win the Hard Rock Grammy Award).

      @@TheVoidwithChristina My pleasure! As someone who was born in 1990 Bosnia I have seen and experienced some of the worst behavior mankind had to offer and suppression of women was a part of it.
      I am glad to see that things have changed dramatically in everyday life especially among young people. In my community today metal heads young and old alike just want to hang out and have fun and being a sexist prick (hater in general) would just see you kicked out of a venue.
      I think the rise of bands like Arch Enemy, Nightwish, Otep etc. had a colossal impact. In any case change is slow but steady and patience is key.

    Great documentary, but I hope I’m not the only one who found Shirly Manson’s comments slightly Femmephobic.
    Historically, there's been a very specific gender presentation that women in heavy music have been expected to meet in order to be taken seriously that we’ve only started to get over in the last few years. The fact that it’s a less traditional/mainstream expectation doesn’t necessarily make it more feminist, it's still an expectation.
    I dunno, maybe judge women on their output and not how many selfies they like to take? Just a suggestion.

      Hey Ruth, thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts. I think she was talking in a broader sense about the shift in culture and the way social media has created a vortex of narcissism and voyeurism (I agree pretty strongly this is the case). It isn't attacking anyone on any level - the way many young women idolise other women simply for their appearance feels pretty problematic to me, though it is nice to celebrate the female form, not sure the overall culture has shifted in the best possible direction. A lot more women want to be pretty entertainers than provocative rock musicians, and that's fine, no judgement - I think its a pretty accurate observation. I don't expect you to agree (and I don't want to agree) with everything everyone says, but I very much value you sharing your own perspective, so thank you. Appreciate you checking out the film.

      @ru_archer 3 года назад

      @@TheVoidwithChristina I didn’t mean to imply that she was being malicious, there’s a difference between setting out to attack someone and just having some ingrained prejudices - we all have those.
      I just think framing prettiness vs. provocation as an either/or choice is a bit reductive, and I’m looking forward to seeing artists who feel empowered to do both if that’s what suits them.

    • @TheVoidwithChristina
      @TheVoidwithChristina  3 года назад

      @@ru_archer She's talking about the culture, not hating on individuals. There's a vast difference. The culture has become incredibly focused on narcissism and voyeurism and I personally have a problem with an entire generation of young women idolising women just because of their beauty. I think it isn't a good shift. There is no right and wrong here, and I don't think she was wrong. If you feel personally offended and this strikes some nerve for you because of your own relationship to idolatry and beauty, I very much respect your right to disagree but to say our culture hasn't become more narcissistic is a very hard thing to prove.

    • @TheVoidwithChristina

      What on earth are you talking about? Look at history. We have work to do. Fifty years ago I couldn't get a bank account, live alone, be independent, buy a house, leave a relationship (unless I wanted to live in poverty). Women around the world are living under oppressive regimes. Shit is real bad. That doesn't mean causes around men aren't important - especially men's mental health and emotional development - fixing one hole in a leaky boat doesn't negate fixing the other issues. Everything important - and EVERYONE - deserves their voices to be heard and their issues addressed.

    ''thats the kind of activism I practice'' mmmm are you absolutely sure you are gleaming what you're gleaming. I'm Im straight but I was raised not have prejudice against anything or anyone, always with each new person treat them how I want to be treated at the get go....that includes not acting in tricky and shady ways, I can't count the number of times a lesbian or a gay chap has let me down in this respect. Could of been potential friends but my own personal philosophy doesn't excuse that sort of behaviour, it doesn't and hasn't dimmed my outlook of them, but I can see how it could lend itself that way towards the views of other people. Seems detrimental to your cause to me.

    • @TheVoidwithChristina

      Feminism is about establishing equal opportunity for all genders. It doesn’t take away from addressing problems that affect mainly men - those are separate issues that deserve just as much attention. We can work towards equality AND address men’s issues ... they can quite happily co exist
