I totally loved this sort of documental style of talking about stoner rock. Definitely my favourite genre and what a nice way to tell its history interviewing so many important characters. It's truly one of a kind video.
Thank you so much! It took a while to put together but it’s my favourite style also, and I have always been struck by the common humility and awesomeness of the people that make it. It couldn’t make me happier that people like you have enjoyed it.
Colten Stolarski I agree, there is a difference between stoner rock and stoner metal though, even though they are used interchangeably, stoner rock for me is very early heavy metal/heavy psychedelic like early Sabbath, early Pentagram and Blue Cheer. Whilst stoner metal is a mix of doom and psych, basically a more modern, heavier, more distorted version of stoner rock.
Rising Sun I agree. Like, Queens of The Stone Age, Cky, Clutch, maybe even Kyuss are stoner rock whereas Stoner metal, is much slower, like sleep, electric wizard, and many others
Colten Stolarski Yeah exactly, although Kyuss did a bit of both, like demon cleaner is definitely a stoner rock song, but stuff like green machine and gardenia are undeniably metal songs.
Obviously Sabbath is the band that started it all. I was a teenager in the 1980s. The first time I ever heard Kyuss,I totally lost my shit. Once I did my research. I find out he's playing a mid-70's "Ovation"neck through body electric, and he's using a bass cabinet for the guitars. The first time that I heard "Blues for The Red Sun"(I was never a very big fan of "Wretch")... I can't even put into words how I felt the first time I heard them. It's like everything that I ever wanted to hear in a band was right there in front of me on that record.Josh's rhythm playing on "Blues for The Red sun" and the follow-up records, has basically defined the way that I play rhythm guitar (and I too now use a two 12 bass cabinet with a slant). I have been a stoner metal freak since I was 14 years old and I'm 46 now. Sleep's holy mountain... Jerusalem comes in second place in my opinion.
Gotta mention The Melvins and Clutch. Both have some of the best stoner rock music ever made and have influenced so many stoner bands.Smoke a fat one and listen to The Melvins Lysol or the Clutch s/t album front to back.I promise it’s a wonderful journey 🤘

I mean, you can get high off of music. Anybody who knows what it's like to feel high and spiritual listening to heavy riffs knows what stoner rock is. Gets you in touch with God
When I first started playing guitar back in the 90s I play3d similar music because I didn't have good equipment but I loved the way it sounded with deep bass in my guitar and didn't realize until I tried to jam with my friends band that I was tuned to B. They tried to tune down to match my songs but their strings were too loose to even play lmao. Then I heard Kyuss Demon Cleaner and it blew my mind because it was what I was doing but tuned a bit higher. I thought, cool, I'm not crazy to play th8s way because others are doing it too and it sounds so wild!
For me, it was Metallica and Sabbath that got me into heavy music, then hearing Kyuss threw Qotsa, Soundgarden, the Melvins and seeing High on Fire with them in a small club in Dunedin NZ, what a night
@@eagleone5456 In my opinion, Stoner/Sludge/Doom are all similar enough to interchange their names unless you're trying to be extremely specific. Almost everyone who listens to one of those 3 subgenres listens to all 3.

@Gene Bone I had that same opinion about Sleep once, but this is a surface understanding of the band. The Sabbath influence is clear, yes, but they really do go beyond that. The compositions are unorthodox, the instrumentation is great, with each member having their own personal style, the riffs and progressions are something else too. It's a fucking great band to jam along really, their reputation is not for nothing. And, to add even more, their overlooked debut is a sludge metal masterpiece. @Gene Bone Now you're telling nonsense. Amos is flashier than Hakius, but not better. OM was truly great since the beginning, or, at least, since Conference of the Birds, with At Giza still being one of their greatest tunes until this day. Great video! My favorite genre, and loved the point made towards the end where you say the drugs and women have been removed from the equation now it's all about the love of music.
Awesome interviews. Long live Stoner Rock! 😃
It's just all heavy blues 🖤
Brilliant :-) So many great people to here from.
Priceless interview
Just found your channel, love it keep on rockin
last year, bongzilla came to visit st. paul (playing with like my favorite local band and like i didn’t know anything beyond their music) so i went to the turf club having a great time im outside in the alley between sets smoking a joint as i do and there’s older dude with big white sideburns and a kinda hoarse voice who makes some conversation so i share some weed cause yknow i’m sharing fella i like meeting strangers and then i go back inside in time for bongzilla and i look up on stage and holy shit that was mike muleboy makela :0
that was also the set where someone passed a joint to him on stage and he put it in his nose so he could play bass, smoke, and scream; what a great fuckin stunt man blew out the roach in a gorgeous shower of sparks
I love that you use a mic like that. It brings old school vibes 👍
"its stolen black music" welcome to the history of rock and roll!
Any white person who picks up a guitar is 100% racist! Right! Who's with me?!
Its nice to see rock alive and well. It looks like we wont have to save the world on our own. CHILLTOWN SHADOWS. Jessenia Blades. Bobby Steelz. Jasmine Punches. Tommy Twist. Six Underground. 😮
Absolutely phenomenal interviews. Super impressed with your interviewing style.
Matt Pike is my personal music hero. He's the reason I'm a diehard Orange amplifier user.
Trouble,Cianide and Cathedral were my introduction to Stoner Metal.
Cathedral 🔝👍
Hell yeah, I want to get you the ability to make a 2 hour documentary.
Listening to these guys inspires me to write more and more music. Magnificent, I've got to subscribe,I don't know how I didn't see this before.
Dude that is so awesome! Have you seen the Black Sabbath / Deep Purple / Maiden lil doco I did on their charity all-star single for the people of Armenia? Spending any time watching these wonderful humans is food for the soul: ruclips.net/video/GhsOCUVHGjs/видео.html
Were starting something across the river from NYC. Stay cool.
@@TheVoidwithChristina I've got to check it out :) thanks a ton!!!!
Ive heard that dixie dave is nuts!!!
When i saw Weedeater about 8 years ago, he had two bottles in paper bags...one was JD, and the other was cough medicine. He also ranted about how he had just blown off his big toe by accident with a shotgun...
Great job, Christina! There are so many great bands in this genre. Stonehead (Inner Demons) and sunnata (Outlands) are some of my faves.
There needs to be warning on this stuff. I innocently looked-up and listened to Sleep's Jerusalem and was held captive by fuzz. No, it gets worse. Autoplay was on and after Jerusalem was finished with me Dopesmoker had it's way. I don't know what happened to me, but I feel kinda dirty and used... 😨
Haha! Oh man, I actually feel like it is called stoner rock because it has this hypnotic, euphoric effect on the listener. And holy shit when you go to a show with an insane sound system? No wonder you feel dirty and used :P
It's all about the distortion! Keep listening, you'll feel better. ;)
Welcome to Sky Valley by Kyuss is practically up there with SOUNDGARDEN, and I couldn't give higher praise. Gardenia, Freedom Run, Whitewater, I mean holy $hit.
2:34 I kinda hoped Ronnie would’ve just cut-in and said, “Actually I’m the guy who replaced One of guys who created the Drop-tuning sound that defined Heavy Metal.”
kimi I know that. But the interviewer said, “These guys”, not just Tony. Black Sabbath, as a 4 piece, brought drop-tuning to Rock and Heavy Metal. That’s what I meant.
8:18 dixie dave from weedeater was in the band .... in monster magnet ?! Can't find anything online about that !!?
Bongzilla!
@@TheVoidwithChristina ah ok ! That makes much more sense haha ! Because that transition from monster magnet to muleboy REALLY sounded like he was taking about MM i was super confused !
I love the interview in the water.....
Me tooo best day ever
awesome video
Geezer got me into playing bass him and cliff burtan are my heroes
I wish you would/could have included Clutch. They were also one of the original ‘stoner’ rock bands. Awesome job on a cool documentary short, Christina! You’re funny, engaging and very easy on the eyes. 🤩
Great interviews Christina, as always!! Love Matt Pike!! He is the man \,,/,
Where has this channel been for all these years? It was hiding from me lmao amazing stuff :D
Finally one admits all music is stolen from old better music THANK YOU!!!
I love how geezer is in the corner smiling
She hot
Thank you so much for this. Stoner/ Doom is my life. As a Bassist myself I’ve always felt such an affinity with this music.
Matt Pike with a shirt? That’s rare
Effing won me with that shout out to Working Man ❤
Just here to say Electric Wizard - Dopethrone.
Christina...god damn, youre beautiful, and charismatic to boot!!!
Those who haven't should check out DOPELORD. 🤘
There are sooooo many great bands that remain unknown to the greater public and that's a shame but I suppose that's the way it should be.
MrRungi/ very true, however I was referring to the Black Sabbath sound and influence.
I'm supposedly lucky to have seen Kyuss live in 95 when they opened for Babes in Toyland and White Zombie. They didn't sound good at all that day. Trouble deserves a mention..they define stoner metal actually. Red Fang does too
Red Fang rule! I wish I could mention everyone! So many good bands :)
@@TheVoidwithChristina I was reminded about Red Fang because someone had a t-shirt on by them in your video. Lol
@Gene Bone funny part is..they were using the house P.A. system at Deer Creek music theater.(its now something else) in Noblesville Indiana.390,000 watts over a 72 speaker Klipsch system...totally badass..KISS blew it up during the siren for Firehouse...they heard it 25 miles away and thought a tornado was coming... Kyuss had the system..I think what they play wasn't meant to be on 11
It's all about the riff.
Awesome video, awesome manic pixie dream girl. Mike Makela is a G!
