His voice should be made into a distortion peddle.
Methstorrtion
I didnt know I needed to hear something so bad before this hahaha
hes got a lemmy vibe goin on.
this is my favorite thing I've read in weeks.
The cigs and weed create the distortion
"Y'know I remember..."
*slams fist on distortion pedal*
*ungodly heavy noise*
😂
He's a monolith of tone.
Every time I tell a story from back in the day
lmao
actually hilarious
"I was in a jazz improv class in community college".
Dude's metal to the core.
Been there myself
Fuck yeah
- 1st mention about Tony Iommi: 0:06 (literally the 1st word the guy says after the intro)
- 1st use of the word "weed": 0:33
- 1st riff: Black Sabbath
This is going well...
ahhhahahhahahahhaa 💖
Yep, it’s all going according to plan
Well, you know, he is the Sleep / High on Fire guy.
10:38 reign in dope
This guy doesn't like Sabbath and Weed. What's his deal?
I like this series, but it really should be called "Watch your favorite musicians play black sabbath riffs".
Tony already invented all the riffs, we all just borrow from Tony
Nikki six had a similar thing nack in the day and all the people he had on just played zeppelin 😂
You cant invent the pentatonic scale, only use it. Iommi is god tier but in your first year of trying to learn guitar you cpuld accidently play one of their riffs just noodling around, its not taking anything away from the music to be honest and say hitting 5 6 7 on the A string isnt trademarkable.
@@CursedInEternity92 while yes you could stumble upon some licks, their sound moreso came from the down-tuning due to the loss of his two fingertips in combo with those blues-y slowed down riffs
And “smoke on the water”
“While wearing a shirt”
You’re doing something right when you have to mention that 😅
Ein The Corgi I know I was confused for a second when I saw the title 😂 until I remembered
@@a_green_cat 😂😂😂😂🤘
🤘🤘😛
Just imagine the jazz improv class. You have a bunch of jazz musicians with archtops and roland amps, but here comes Matt Pike with a Les Paul and an Orange stack.
He then becomes friends with that one guy using a double-neck SG and a Marshall turned up to meltdown who's way too much into John Mclaughlin.
Edit: holy shit, and then Matt actually brings up Mahavishnu Orchestra during the video, hahaha.
He constantly references Mahavishnu...heard him mention in like 3 different interviews already
imagine him topless in a class full of tie wearing jazz guitarists
In C standard.
And everybody in the class going, "I wanna sit next to him"......
Matt, Kirk Windstein, Jerry Cantrell and Bill Kelliher are just on a different level of riff writing ability.
Hells ya Cantrell
The fertile green does wonders man!!
Hell fuckin yeah brother, i worship matt and jerry
I'd add Chuck Schuldiner, John Gallagher and Hoest
@Broyo yo no they're one of few bands that both maintain their sound and evolve.
My one and only interaction with Matt Pike, which occurred at a High On Fire show at a small venue called Uncle Pleasants, in Louisville, Kentucky. I was taking a piss, and he used the urinal next to me:
MP: "What's up man?"
Me: "Oh Matt! What's up man?"
MP: "Not much, I think I'm going to get the whiskey shits".
I don't know if he shat his pants, but High On Fire destroyed the place.
Nice guy very sloppy
Fucking gold dude
LMFAO!!!
"Mike"? 😂🤣
Saw a lot of good shows there.
His guitar tone makes everything sound like stoner doom!
+Dustin Hall C standard
He tried to say hes metal but his shit is stoner rock. I ask why listen to stoner rock(?)when you could just put on some Sabbath and call it a day. Its kind of a fake ass genre.
@@pennyhemens478 its stoner metal. if you think stoner metal is all just sabbath rip offs, you haven't listened to a lot of it
Like pushin turds through a strainer
Penny Hemens bruh 😐 yeah stoner metal is sabbath worship but it’s way heavier it’s just not the same listening experience my guy
As someone living in a whirlpool of depression and other bullshit, anytime I see Matt Pike, that all disappears. It makes me so happy to live in the same time as him. God luck and good speed, my man. Keep on truckin’ Mr. Pike!
Sam Libman hope you feel better👍🏻
Pablo Ramírez Thank you brother. We’re all in this together. Peace!
Oh man, I logged into youtube just to like this post
HORNS UP \,,/ Sam!
Hope your troubles fade further down the road, brother. Safe travels.
his guitar sounds like it smoked weed
it's fucking baked
It’s called distortion
@@thestig7603 more like fuzz
@RedKing it’s different wave of sound
It sounds like shit
"Sir, I think there is a little tone in your distortion"
🤣
no one:
Stoner and Doom Metal bands: "yeah that, but *S L O W E R* "
I even watched the video in x0.5 speed.
@Andy Salter no one:
This dude: "guyws letz stup havnv fun, fun is for dumnb peepole guysz lestin to mi"
that's more sludge than stoner. stoner doesn't have to be slow, and there's even some "fast" doom. sludge or funeral doom is the one where they all want to play under 80bpm
@@Σατανας666 dont ever argue whats the difference between sludge stoner doom and drone.
Frankly there isnt any. Every band is different
@@juno980 Don't be that guy.
His fretting hand shakes so much it gives me anxiety, yet through some kind of black magic he still manages play everything right. Every. Fucking. Time... Fuckin' awesome.
He's probably got the DTs
I noticed that too.
So I’m pretty sure Matt Just gave us the secret to his riff writing
Tune your guitar to C standard and Learn the first 5 Sabbath and 5 Motörhead records
and go to jazz improv class in college
And some Yngwie Malmsteen
I'm sure he's more versatile than that. He's a hell of a nice guy. He lives in my town. Have tipped some back with him.
Hey, Man. Love the Mastodons OMRTS pic 🙂
@@warmothgmcwhat town is that man I’m tryna knock some back with the shirtless rifflord hahaha
I met Phil Anselmo at a High On Fire show about 17 years ago. My friends band was opening for them and Phil showed up just to watch the show. After it was done we all went backstage and drank. Dreams do come true.
Fuck yeah brother
God that's so cool. Good on you man!
That man named Phil Anselmo? He grew up to be Barack Obama…
In all seriousness that’s dope man, I would’ve been starstruck.
That shirt is CGI. Nice try Loudwire.
Now when I look closely, hell yeah, its CGI
!! Hahahahaha!!!
You can tell matt still enjoys playing his SLEEP stuff after all these years it still sounds phenomenal
A lot of these favorite riff guys, you seem em struggling to answer the question meaningfully. Matt's like, Here's a riff. Here's another riff. Here's another one. I also like this one. I learned this one twenty years ago on a Tuesday.
thats why its good
It's just notes, man. Try not to dig to deep.
He answered by demonstrating. Why tell notes abcd when you have a guitar at hand? I totally understood the answers he gave.
Who else was surprised that Yngwie Malmsteen and John Maclaughlin are amongst his influences? 😮 Also that he was in jazz improv class 😅
I had read about the jazz influences, but that wild Yngwie really surprised me. That guy has written really good riffs though
😂
When he started talking about Mahavishnu Orchestra, it just further cemented my love and admiration for this dude.
I had heard he like mahavishnu. This is the first time I’ve seen him play some though!! So cool!
Baby Metal?
Wait a minute, Matt smokes weed?
Apparently it's the only thing he does and actually helps him after quitting alcohol and other drugs.
I am scandalized. Speechless even.
As well as shrooms👌🏻
HA!
WAIT A MINUTE HOLD ON
Matt Pike and the 12th fret - A Love Story
This is the best episode of this series yet
Matt Pike is one of the most underestimated entertainers that has ever lived that dude is as rad as it comes and as metal as it comes does anybody else agree with me. Go to a high on fire show it'll change your life I promise
Saw them and Monolord last month. Made me start writing a lot more aggressive stuff
who the hell is Matt Park?? LoL
Or SLEEP if you can catch a show!
@@Polidavey48 I think it's his Asian cousin. I kid. I kid.
@@mosesgarner2404 🤣
Love how he takes all these riffs and make them sound like a High on Fire or Sleep riff
It's easier to explain this to my mom now when he has a t-shirt on
Makes her too wet otherwise am I right
@@shremastergeneral7523 yes because Mike is my step father at the moment
He has such a mean exaggerated vibrato. I love it.
Dropped tuning down 18 whole steps to the key of Hell.
Nothing beats those old school High on Fire riffs.
I saw them front row once, they opened with ‘Fury Whip,’ and it was the most punishing sound I ever heard.
Pretty sure I was at that show with you bud, majestic theatre?
I cannot wait to see them some day and have this same experience
I'd kill for a whole album of HoF doing Motorhead covers.
A malmstein mixed in there for good measure and its an instant purchase
And venom!
I know this comment is a year old, and you may already be aware. But they are contributing to a Motorhead Tribute Album, I believe they are doing "Iron Fist"
I agree though I want a whole album!
They do such great Celtic Frost covers too.
@@rememberbeginning ur right
Matt Pike is seriously an intelligent guy. If you get a chance to talk to him, this guy can blow your mind with literature, music and so on.
For sure, feel like it's understated but most musicians are heavily interested in other arts. Most of Sleep and Om alike are heavily riddled with religious history references
He is so freaking happy to be playing these these riffs. Matt Pike is absolutely an ambassador for METAL! Love how he gives back to players and shares his knowledge and technique!!!
I was the artisit liason/light dude/toilet cleaner/babrback/DJ at a metal venue in Australia for a few years and one of the highlights was getting a cappucino with 6 shots for Matt, and then him telling me how he's into yoga and healthier living now. The dude is such a dude.
Sound guy - So Matt, do you want more Fuzz or Gain or Crunch?
Matt - Yes…
Damn Van Halen never sounded so heavy
Or bad 😂
No
That guitar is a thing of beauty.
One of the greatest guitarists in metal of all time
lol, definitely not... not even close.
@@KalosPVP more power to ya because he is a very out there player but Pike is one of my heroes
Haha you'll get this comment on literally any video featuring a guitarist. Go look up wes boyland or Tom delonge and everyone will say they are gods
@@bolerdweller yup, as a friend once told me, when we were laughing at how bad some song was that had invaded our ear space, and my buddy turned to me suddenly a bit more serious and stated, "Just remember though, every song is somebody's favorite song." That being said, i recently became aware of Sleep, and though hendrix will always hold the top guitar spot in my little universe, i have been loving what matt pike and the crew of sleep have created, and only think it's a shame their isn't more
@SUGAR CHOKE totally agree. Brothers In The Wind should have to be teached at school.
"Into the Void" is my favorite Sabbath jam.
Converted me also upon first listen.
Hard not to feel it.
What is next Danny Lilker with sleeves on his shirt
His style is totally unique and he’s mesmerizing to watch
I don’t know much about Matt Pike but for an old guy he’s just a kid at heart who just likes to rock out on guitar 🎸😎👍
Why did I just *know* the first riff was going to be Into the Void
I figured it'd be Sweet Leaf because that's easier to play and because _420_
Little worried about his hand shakiness. I love this guy.
Its prob nerves, I don’t think I ever saw him do an interview where he’s gotta play songs that aren’t his. Prob worried he flub up. Might have a bunch of ppl watching him behind the camera. Stage vs couch is a different feeling I’m sure.
That and constantly bending those fat ass strings.
I saw high on fire back in mid November and he killed it
I saw them last year and he seemed fine to me. I’m just saying. I hope it’s just general wear and tear.
Built-in vibrato.
I love Pike so much. A true metal gem, he knows how to write riffs that are super stony and sludgy, but energetic and punk at the same time.
09:35 insanely good advice on writing memorable parts in a tune using riffs
As soon as he said "smoked weed" I knew exactly what song he was going to play. And I was right.
@@JimBobDewayne me too
You can totally hear how much this guy influenced Mastodon!
Indeed, all of the current band members first met at a High on Fire show.
Mastodons first two albums, sure, but by Blood Mountain they were starting to develop a lot more of their own sound.
@@codyhansonbass Leviathan though is just straight Sleep/HoF
@@jeremyrafuse5330 no it isn't, lmao it's way more dynamic than HOF was at the time. You telling me on "Leviathan", there's any song that remotely reminds you of them?
Bill and Brent came into their own on that album, Brann is nuts compared to even Den Kensel. As for vocalists, they all sound way different from another, especially Pike.
@@murk4552 I’m a big Mastodon fan but Kensel is a better drummer than Dailor. Brann’s a freak because he’s pulling vocal duties half the time which is insane considering his drumming, but Des is an absolute monster behind the kit. Power plus creativity. People don’t realise how much sonic space he fills…he’s as important as Pike is to the HoF sound.
I would have had to ask him about 10,000 years.
Of all the music HoF has given us over the years, 10,000 Years is still my all-time fave.
@@ABoyd1852 that is the one song I say check out no matter what- It is High On Fire.
ABoyd1852 same. I listen to it at least once a month and have done for about 20 years now.
I like how he plays his riffs . Damn, Fury Whip sounded cool.
I’ve never heard a distortion pedal used as a punctuation mark at the end of every sentence, but I’m here for it forever.
How about getting Scott 'Wino' Weinrich on this sometime.
I'm the same age as Matt; I also remember being blown away the first time I heard "I'll See The Light Tonight".
Just seen high on fire a few weeks ago and they crushed it. Glad to see Matt healthy and killing it
" So I grew up way back... And I was watching MTV.... and there's like Van Halen, like......" then proceeds to play EVH riff.
Funny I don't remember Eddie tuning down 13 full steps! Haha
Luv the Fuzz!
There's only 12 steps in a chromatic scale.
@@hinjurock70 so what? you can go 420 steps in a 12 step scale
@@keimokuula9852
Huh?
@@hinjurock70 well think about it 12 is only the lenght of the scale
@@keimokuula9852
There are only 12 notes in Western music, then you reach the octave and those notes repeat themselves at a higher pitch.
The amount of distortion he uses makes my guitar sound like an acoustic lol
Into the Void changed my life. Heaviest riff ever.
All Hail Pike. This guy is the real deal, and one hell of an Axeman. Singer. Songwriter. An absolute legend, and all round nice guy.
Black Sabbath does change your life the first time you hear it.
First time i heard em it kind of freaked me out. Black Sabbath, first album, first song. 14 yrs. old, alone in my dark, gloomy basement bedroom...i had to give it a few plays . Then i cranked it up and realized it was fucking brilliant!
Matt Pike being interviewed. All questions are answered . . . . with riffs.
That Les Paul is really something
Off the shelf standard
@@damon2a102 i know, it's not like i've never seen anything like it, but still...
The way he just launches into the druid solo blows my mind
I love how he'll explain while simultaneously playing.
He loves heavy music, and one of his guitar inspirations was John McLaughlin. This dude is my spirit animal
Every guitar Matt Pike touches has perfect intonation
I finally saw High On Fire two weeks ago. Loudest show I've ever been to in my life. Never before did a concert actually cause pain in my ears. Killer set though, really tight.
Wow they hand out free ear plugs at concerts you should use them...
Matt is just straight up an awesome guy.
His ability & his heart & soul for his craft is just something you don't see a lot of these days.
He's the kinda guy you could just sit back with, enjoy a beer & kick it to some Skynard while busting out some real old skool jams.
when your family name is that of a 10 foot war spear...Matt Pike is legend.
I love how every time he’s about to play a song, he hits that distortion pedal. To me, it’s like he wanted to do a different song each take, and then loudwire put it all together. Like “Mr Pike, that take was good...but I think instead of sabbath, you should talk about Yngwie” Matt then says “ For Sure, I remember learning I can see the light tonight, and then reading about Planet X and Space Lizards” loudwire then says “Right, how about we don’t mention Planet X and we mention Motorhead....oh and one more thing, I know you love frequencies, so can you use this pedal to do everything on your current pedal board?” Matt then says “Is that what your reptilian overloads want me to do?” Loudwire “You know what, do whatever you want Matt
Oh fuck yea. Pike is one of the gnarliest metal guitarists on the planet. To me he has the most distinct style of any metal player out there. I forgot how bad ass fury whip is too. Long live pike. Best episode of this yet by far.
Matt's riffs seem simple on paper and to the ear but he has a way of playing them that is so unique to him that they take time to master. this guy makes some hell of a riff
God damn that tone.
Matt Pike is a brilliant guitar player and songwriter. I love both High On Fire and Sleep.
I love that this guy doesn't use some dumb looking V or jagged guitar. A regular ass Les Paul ripping those monster riffs! Super cool.
No one uses those childish things anymore really..
A big thank you Mr. Pike, for your awesome music!!
Only person I've seen play into the void like Iommi does. Matt Pike is a true hero and riff lord
I could watch this guy play guitar all day, I love this man! Thank you Matt Pike!
sounds like he used two distortion pedals and cranked amp gain on top of it
He's actually plugged straight into a Fender Twin.
Trevor lol
zakur0hako man that’s a solid state Marshall mg series probably clean channel with a fender (I think overdrive they’re called) in front it. But. Idk about clean. I had one of those amps and it didn’t take pedals too well, so I’m guessing itd be the green od channel with the gain about three quarters or atleast half. But holy crap I woulda never guessed that was a fender pedal holy crap
@@camdero3294 the pedal is an S&K VHD
@@serdiezv thanks for noticing. I built that!
I love the way his face lit up when he said the words Tony Iommi
Daaaaamn hes wearing a shirt now that is news
I love "Blood from Zion" so heavy, love it!
God I hope they keep making music like their last two albums. Such a badass sound. It’s like Motörhead meets Slayer meets Black Sabbath
Yea his jazz influence really comes thru on Blessed Black Wings!!
In case anyone was wondering why he's on everyone's list of guitarists.
Nick McGarvey he certainly does play guitar
This guy is fucking awesome! I want to just sit and chill and hammer out sick riffs all day with him.
I can just sit and watch Matt playing riffs and chatting about his favourite music for hours, somehow this music is relaxing despite its "heaviness"
It melted my face when he played into the void
This cat is nothing short of a complete wild man on that Les Paul.
Now i want a Sleep Cover of Meeting of the Spirits
exactly.
I love it how he slams that pedal, every time he wants to play something, hahah. " I remember this little thing...* hits pedal* SWOOOOOSH!
Matt's tone is borderline pure white noise. God damn, this man is hard core!
Pride moment when I find out that my favorite Matt Pike riffs are also Matt Pike's favorite riffs.
Thanks, Loudwire!!! Matt Pike is the best :)
Damn. Kenny Hickey, the Ghost guy, and now Matt Pike. Are you trying to be the best channel on youtube?
Chris Loren I missed Kenny Hickey?!?!? Dammit!
Yea really, riffin on... just amazing. Merry xmas
That intro for Fury Whip is one of the best metal intros ever! When Dez enters with those fills - then the guitar alone - and then FULL THROTTLE, limbs and heads flying to the left and right! Should have gotten the Grammy for that alone!
ive been wanting this for so long... and i didnt even know it
Love Matt Pike. such a legendary shredder.
Matt Pike playing Yngwie while wearing shirt. Now that's something unusual.
5:11 I CANT BELIEVE MATT PIKE PLAYED MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA!
"What is heavy?`
Heavy is about being pissed and about being a warlord.
Like if you took an axe and chopped somebodies head off..and it landed..and then you make a riff that plays the same way, that way. That's heavy." (Such Hawks Such Sounds DVD)
