- The sultan of sludge illustrates that his first band is a shuttle for sonic exploration launching into orbit on the backs of triple-humbucker guitars, a sierra of Oranges, and two boards the size of Cape Canaveral.

Matt Pike is much like his guitar playing-powerful, blunt, slightly pissed off, and occasionally out of tune. And he’s been playing guitar almost as long as he’s been talking. “My uncle and grandpa used to always play guitar and I just remember loving those times,” says Pike. “Ever since I could handle a guitar, I’ve been playing one.”
Pike’s headbanging lineage started in the ’90s with stoner-metal icons Sleep, and after that band’s initial burnout, continued with the ferocious High on Fire. Decades of playing have honed Pike’s perspective about his instrument and music: “Riffs are the conversation starter-that’s what brings people in, but you better have more to offer than just that,” he says. “I create with the guitar and the riff is my illustrative force.” For fans of Pike’s raging riffage, it should be no shock that the frontman/guitarist had enough to say by way of his guitar (and High on Fire lyrics) to populate two new albums: Electric Messiah from High on Fire and Sleep’s The Sciences.
Since the release of those two critically acclaimed albums in 2018, Pike’s vision has been validated by way of a Grammy for Best Metal Performance (Electric Messiah) and dozens of sold-out Sleep shows that have continued to send the doom trio around the world. While the tour that brought Pike, bassist/vocalist Al Cisneros, and drummer Jason Roeder to town was delayed because Pike had one of his toes partially amputated due to diabetes, the pioneering guitarist couldn’t be sidelined for long. “The guitar is a spiritual instrument-it goes from heart, to head, to hands, out the speaker cabs, and into the universe. That directly impacts the people who listen to you-they know if you’re full of shit or not. I’ve always known I was meant to express myself through this 6-string tool. The only constant through addiction, hard times, juvenile delinquency, heartache, and life has been the guitar.”
Before the band’s show at Nashville’s Marathon Music Works, the bare-chested shredder threw on a shirt, strapped on a Les Paul Artisan, and explained to PG’s Chris Kies how Sleep’s aural expeditions are full of patient, spontaneous moments built on a bed of sustain and swirl.

What did it feel like when he was sustaining that note??? Great rundown btw
I saw sleep in a bar that could hold 100 people at most and it was the same setup in this video
That made my ears hurt.
Sounds godlike
Your kids will be able to rock though
What year was that show ?

That background hiss is really appropriate
I feel like Matt himself hums like that in everyday life
That's just your hearing going out from all the fucking cabs Matt has.
@@mj_dj Matt IS 60 cycle hum
What background hiss? lol too many concerts ha ha ha
his guitar tone comes with custom tinnitus.
Plays most distorted sound I've heard in my life; "and that's with no gain"
Garrett Grimm “fluff entered the chat”
Sounds like every other stoner rock band out there like Dopethrone and Kyuss, etc.
Dude, that just made me laugh so hard
Cail Mckee same 😂
To be fair though he was talking about just that one pedal having no gain. The rest of his chain is pretty gain heavy.
This proves it guys. Playing stoner doom riffs ‘ round the 12th fret with the amp blasting doesn’t get old, even after 30 yrs. Its awesome to see him still get lost in the sound
The way Sleep does it, it never gets old
@@RickNBacker Hell yeah.
He sounds like Alex Jones doing a Doug Stanhope impression.
fuck i was just gonna start typin he sounds like stanhope
With a bit of a west coast twist. Uncannily accurate though.

He's like an American Lemmy
He sounds stoner too
He simply has become/is metal personified. Jeff Matz is his overdrive.

If Matt Pike doesn't get a signature Orange in the next few years, I quit.
Email the company in mass. All sleep fans should. Cisneros got his signature Rickenbacker...

He changed everything
@@kyleoswald3366 They could do it like the Fortin Meshuggah head. It has dual gain controls,a master volume compression pull switch and lo and hi inputs. It sounds like fleet of the best Marshall heads but even hotter. Orange could do one channel for Sleep and one for High On Fire.
@Mark Wright Because buying one stock, gutting it and then modding it to get the same results is stupid and expensive. All Les Paul's are signature guitars.
He looks healthy and much thinner, good for him
Shame they didn't cover Cisneros though. I mean, I'm a guitar player but I'm as interested in his rig if not even more
Sometimes guys don't feel like talking shop on camera.
We asked Al, but he politely declined. Thanks for watching
@@premierguitar Let's crowdfund it!
It looks like he just has a bunch of ampeg coffins and that's all he uses, I don't see a board on the floor.
Matthew Friedly nah there’s a board, he uses a tuner, dod 250 (i think), a pog and probably a switcher
Is that a shirt? Who is that guy?
Probably Matt's tech
it was either a shirt, or clipping the microphone to his cap. But then, we may hear the thoughts in his mind.
LOL Shirt AND shaved!
Definitely a Pikealike.

Chris's passion for doom metal and stoner rock is unparalleled. I love when he gets to talk with the doom bands, he's always asking the right stuff.

"I don't even wear earplugs."
Holy shit, that's surprising
Fucking badass! The real deal
He sort of comes off as "that guy".
@Dylan Gruenloh He's wearing a shirt. That's a lot of precaution for Matt Pike.
"yeah dude, i can hardly hear anything i'm no sissy"
Alex Stewart - have I seen him onstage with a shirt on?
I hear a guy coughing in the background and I think I know why he's coughing

Chris Kies is by far the best Rig Rundowns interviewer. Thoughtful, concise, and lets the players speak.
Agreed. I like Jon Bulger with blues guys too. You can tell he digs it. Bulger with someone he’s not a fan of is pretty obvious though.
Rebecca Dirks End of story
He does his homework also ie the hiccups
You can tell he lives for that sound. Such an excitable guy, just wants to talk shop all day. What a life
I relate to Chris Kies' reactions to Matt doing his thing. The sheer volume of this rig must propel you to My Bloody Valentine-levels of dumbfoundedness.
Man, I love this guy. Otto the bus driver from the simpsons
Pretty-much dead on!

Something about Matt and his love for constant tweaking and fiddling with tone just screams ADHD to me. I have it, so I totally know how it feels.
One chord from that man makes me feel immortal. And he sure is a hell of a character too.
Dude mentions The Botanist. Matt plays it. Dude’s mind is blown.
Edit: 20:00
That was really cool
Finally a rig that's not "Yeah bro here's my guitar, goes into the axe-fx, and into front of house." Thank goodness Doom and Stoner metal still use real amps.
Damn right.
You’re aware that everything is virtually the same now right? You’re hearing those amps through FOH just like an Axe it’s just that ace fx’s are specifically designed for it and sound much cleaner
@@Viper-dz2kw Yes, but how interesting is it for an interviewer or the public taking an in-depth look at someones rig only to find out its just an Axe-FX unit? Total snore fest.
Steven Zarzecki it’s actually extremely interesting, it’s the show or the artist’s fault (I’m not sure who decides) for not going into the detail of the axe fx, most of us who use a big rack mounted fx processor (I’ve got a helix but an axe 3 would be great) have extremely complex signal paths with various effects and amp simulations in each patch but for some reason they’ve decided that they’re just gonna go “oh it’s an axe fx” rather then showing at least one preset
@ Danny Aghdam...cleaner? Why would we want it to sound cleaner? This isn't Maroon 5...this is Sleep.
17:35 the man has a goddamn Metal Gear Solid pedal. Ive seen it all.
You can tell that's a counterfeit Matt Pike. He's got a shirt on. Play authentic Premium Guitar!
Matt Pike... what a crazy legend, what a character! Honest and down to earth guy that just loves to rock loud guitar. Very well, you're keeping Metal alive! Rock loud and long!
I've never heard of him nor Sleep. But then again I gave up on metal years ago.

quentinateacid boss hyper fuzz 2, full gain on mode 2. If you can’t afford that, behringer sf300 is a great replacement
"So basically what I can do with that is make funny noises at the end of a set."

God bless Matt Pike, i think it’s safe to say we’ll never see him with a fractal/helix/Kemper on stage.
This guy is criminally underrated and often overlooked in the world of great metal guitarists. I hope he gets more recognition and credit.
Absolutely bud. Riff machine
He's definitely one of those 'it's not how many notes you play it's how you play it" kinda guitarists
Crazy how he can play one chord and it's like "whoa that's sleep!". Having a signature style as a guitarist is really hard to develop. He's done it to a point where you can recognise him from ONE CHORD. Tone lord.
Ola England said fuzz isn't chugging
All due respect. He is definitely not under rated. His name as been in a lot of conversations for a lot of years. Dude is crunchy man. That tone is space trucking in a Galaxy 500.

Yes!!! Finally!! I've been waiting for Sleep's run down, idk if many people realize this is probably one of the most expensive rigs that's ever been on this show...I'd kill to plug into his wall of Orange!
Nels Cline had more money in just pedals than this guy has in amps.
No way that’s true. On Santana’s rundown, his tech showed multiple Dumbles and PRS’s with necks made entirely out of Brazilian rosewood. Joe Bonamasa had $35,000 guitars and multiple Dumbles too.

Stoners: your order of knobbage makes perfect sense, Matt
I hope Matt knows that that is the best way to wire a 3 pickup les Paul, or any 3 pickup guitar for that matter, that ive ever heard in my life. My Gretsch is wired like that (with the addition of a master volume up on the lower "horn" or whatever its called) and I love it for the exact same reason he does, you can blend the pickups all sorts of crazy ways.
How is the pickup switch wired in this setup? Like a normal 2 pickup guitar?
@@Hadakles It depends on the exact model, but on mine I've got two switches - one that goes from bridge, bridge & neck, and just neck, and another that goes no middle pickup, middle+whatevers going on with the other switch, and just middle.
@@idiosyncraticmushroom3030 wow that's also a nice setup! I quess with one switch the volume pot for the middle pickups is kind of like the switch for it: one way is off and the other way is all the way on, in between you can blend the volume. Only more turning of knobs instead of switching.
God he's living the life.
He´s more thin, hell yeah! Good health keep you living to the fullest, so stoner dudes try to equilibrate smoking weed and running like maniacs

i hope this means he got alot of his stolen pedals back. seems to still have a big board
This was shot before that.
This was most likely shot before then. Sadly.
Some of 'em were custom built one-of-a-kind pedals, but the commercial ones he's getting back directly from the manufaturers, i've heard. Guess there's still a brotherhood 'tween metalheads, i've seen many brands shipping him the pedals he lost so he can keep up shredding. And of course sponsor them, but whatev. We NEED Sleep's tone more than ever.

I saw High on Fire a few years ago at an outdoor festival. He was wearing the most pristine pair of jeans I'd ever seen outside of a retail store. It was like he bought them on the way to the stage. Not prewash, pre-faded, pre-worn, just stiff fresh denim.
Tone is in the denim
Just raw denim ?
Awesome rundown! I think my favorite part started at 15:00 - the look on Matt's face at 15:17 says it all! You can just get lost in the sound :-)
kind of unfortunate about Cisneros, but it’s still really damn cool to see Pike’s gear
i never noticed how Matt takes his thumb OFF the back of the neck when playing some of his hammer-on licks... see 16:50
He does that a lot in High on Fire. I noticed it in the intro to "Snakes for the Divine".
The way he says "Yeah!" at 15:45 is sound of person who wants to be nice and do their job but wants to mention how uncomfortably loud that rig is.
Sean Flynn it’s gotta be.
This dude is, IMO, the "newest" metal legend. Its so interesting to see him talk about his rig, especially his obsession with tone. I know all the great guitarists are tone chasers, but Pike is next level.
He’s not really that new, he’s one of the inventors of stoner rock along wish Josh Homme
@@Viper-dz2kw thats why I put it in quotes. I meant new compared to like '70s and '80s guys
Danny Aghdam Nothing wrong with Josh. but Sleep fans may strongly disagree about the co inventor of stoner rock thing.

No amount of video could make this crazy setup make sense to anyone but mr. Pike.
I saw HoF in Portland on my birthday in October 2007. I talked to Matt for a few minutes after the show. One of the nicest guys around, he lives and breathes the music with the same intensity as the fans. Absolutely zero bs or jadedness. He's the real deal, and it shows in this video.
Let’s get Matt pike some earplugs
I love how regardless of what he changes on the guitar, amps and pedals, it all sounds the same (to me at least). Obviously, that low tuning is a major aspect of his sound.

Not real he is wearing tshirt
Gibson Artisan Les Paul prices just went into orbit!
They're not TOO bad...3-4k on Reverb...I mean, that's more than I've spent on guitars in my whole life, but that sounds about right for the price of a 70's Gibson.
Literally 2 days after this was recorded, that pedal board was stolen
Sad!
Dillon Fields seriously? That’s so fucked.
I wish there were tiny, flat, sticker-sized gps that you can stick on your gear, that can go go your phone and monitor them at will. I seen a start-up for an idea such as that, but it turned out to be a scam and failure. I'm sure something like that will come along, but nothing as of yet. People who steal gear are lowest of the low.
