    Very Good! A large amount of surplus fixed bale helmets switched to swivels before the Korean War. Yes, many got switched during WW2. A lot of dents in helmets happened when soldiers used the helmet as a tool such as pounding stakes. My Grandfather is still alive and always talks about when he was in WW2.

      My Grandfather was in the Philippines and Japan in 1944-45. I bought a 1968 US Army shirt and trousers for $10 at an auction today. It's has patches 101st Airborne and 1st Cavalry on it. Sergeant collar pins and Hammond name. Also for $5 a 2002 soldiers backpack. Then I still need to try dating 2 Navy shirts and a few other items. It's mixed year items for $5. A WW2 Wool coat sold for $95. I picked up the same one last year for $7.50. Crazy how prices change at auctions.

    My "theory" for the named USMC helmet with the flower. It's widely known that Marines during the Vietnam War got old shitty gear. This includes helmets. A LOT of Marines got trashy, surplus helmets left over from WWII. And we all know how most helmets got graffitied during Vietnam. This would be where the flower comes into play. Some Marines didn't even get helmet covers, so this could be why the flower is on the helmet itself. In a nutshell, I believe it was a helmet used during WWII, that was reissued to a Marine during Vietnam who graffitied it.

      WWIIman1942 I agree. That's more than likely what happened for sure. Thanks for watching.

      @@JonBoyMilitaria No problem! Thanks for putting the video out and replying! I currently have two M1s. I have a November/December 1943 (judging by the heat stamp) dated one and a Vietnam one that has the 80s style chinstraps and was fitted with a woodland camo cover and a band. I also have two PASGTs, one is unissued and came with the original booklet. I'd like to buy a rough WWII dated M1 and restore it. Have you done any restoring?

    • @JonBoyMilitaria
      @JonBoyMilitaria  6 лет назад

      WWIIman1942 Thanks. Sound alike you have some nice helmets. Honestly I'm not really into restoring. I did make a few videos last year showing me cleaning up some helmets that were in a house fire.

      @@JonBoyMilitaria Eh, my helmets aren't as cool as yours. But I would say I'm lucky to have a WWII M1. Not many people in this hobby can say that. It's a front seam swivel bail with OD7 chinstraps. All original shell. Most of the paint a texture is still intact as well. The liner is a Westinghouse with all original khaki webbing. I got it for $70 on eBay. I did buy a nape strap, a head band, and a liner chinstrap for it, however. I bought the accessories from J Murray Inc 1944. You have to check them out if you haven't already. He gets original helmets in bulk, and completely restores them. They honestly look beautiful in the end.

      WWIIman1942 I know about J. Murray. I see stuff all the time on Facebook and ebay. Sounds like you have a nice World War 2 helmet. I have around 56 - 58 World war 2 M1s. I also have 2 M3 Flak helmets.

  • @thurin84

    nice! i loves the m1s! up until recently i thought my earliest was 28h but i was talking to a guy on 1 of the facebook helmet pages and he asked me if it really was because his research hadnt turned up any lower than 44. so i sanded it down a bit and sure enough it was 1128h just that the 1s were really weak. so now my oldest is 40c. the guy said he had known a guy who worked for mccord during the war and that they were stamped prior to drawing. ive got a pair of chinstraps exactly like those on your 2nd m1 with the snaps. they were billed as ww2 when i got them. though the buckle and j hook are different from standard theyre identical in style to a larger buckle and j hook on a ww2 bc-1000 backpack radio waist belt.

    • @JonBoyMilitaria
      @JonBoyMilitaria  8 лет назад +1

      Thanks. Yeah I knew that chinstrap set up was weird. I didn't know where it came from. I'm so glad I was able to pick up the 28E Helmet. Even better that it is named. I wish it was still fixed bale but it is what it is. When would you say the 28E would fall as far as month/ year? I was leaning towards 12/41 but not really sure.

    • @thurin84
      @thurin84 8 лет назад +1

      JonBoy09 the charts really hard to read but using your 2 straight edge method id lean towards late jan or early feb 1942. it makes sense considering production didnt start until the 2nd half of 41 and there were numerous teething troubles with it.

    Got one with traces of NCO tape rear & front. Stamped 321 A with a swivel bale replacement. £30 i paid. A similar one with liner was selling for £200. I'm hoping one day to find a liner for sale without shell. I wondered could You tell me how much the early M1 liners usually cost?

    • @JonBoyMilitaria
      @JonBoyMilitaria  6 лет назад +1

      Honestly, it really depends on condition and the maker of the liner. The earlier ones can go for big money if they are in good condition. The St. Clair and Hood Rubber liners bring a premium. They are the low pressure liners that came after the Hawley/General Fibre liners. The low pressure liners didn't hold up well and so not as many were produced like the later high pressure liners.

      Hey Dave, the helmet that you have with 4 digits could be late WW2 or Vietnam Era... Does that helmet have a front seam or a rear seam? If its front seam then it is World War 2 for sure. The Rear Seams came into existence around October 1944... So it could be late WW2 or like I said maybe Vietnam...
