    I live down South on a slight hill growing Bermuda and am going to have to do much of what I saw you just do. My lawn not only is on a slight hill (erosion north/south) but also was never leveled east / west so I am in for a time!! I do not have access to that machine that spreads out dirt. (gonna use a potting mix from a local compost/mulch farmer) since I live on red clay and dont want to use sand. Bottom line is I have 30 years on you and am already feeling my "wheelbarrow back" Thanks to you Pest and Lawn Ginja I will at least know exactly how to proceed. Thank you for taking time to share your skills with us. I most enjoy how you and your beautiful family enjoy your time together. (including the largest headed dog I think I have ever seen!) Keep these videos coming as you have taught me so very much about caring for my lawn.

    I hope that your wife appreciates all that work you do. I was married 28 years we end up getting divorced and she kept the house ,but now the house looks like is abandoned. High grass all the time, weeds everywhere, bold spots,ant hills, its actually kind of sad to see all my hard work going down the drain.
    My point is that women don't seem to understand the amount of hard work that goes into keeping the house beautiful until they have to do it. Just because we make it look easy doesn't mean that it is.

      @@pestandlawnginja Surprised your neighbors don't ask you to do their lawns as well. You have the beautiful lawn. Mine looks terrible but want to work on it. Thought of buying the Sunjoe scarifier and dethatcher to at least get it back. So hard it feels like concrete so I probably just need to overseed. Doing my due diligence and finding what grass would work well here in Iowa. I don't plan on going super crazy like you (no offence you know your stuff, and your yard is amazing) I'm just sick of how bad my lawn looks and hate looking at it. I can take a picture and you can see what I mean, and or if you could give me some cost effective ways to make it better I would be more then appreciative. My lawn probably sucks anyways because after looking around I found out that each neighbor has their run off gutter water running straight to my house. My soil being absolute garbage just led to it flooding my basement. Found out I cant do anything about the way they have them facing either (legally) other then asking them politely to move them, which of course resulted in a "if you wanna pay to move them" sort of ordeal. But both neighbors refused to even reposition their spouts that run into my lawn. I'm having a surveyor come out to see where my property line runs to see if they are in violation of mine. Regardless of that situation I hope to at least have half of what your lawn looks like. It would baffle the ones around me, the next door neighbor is the grounds keeper of the school nearby. The other is a retired farmer, and he just likes to throw the sticks from a tree that is clearly in his lawn on my side so I have to take care of them. I just want my lawn to be "normal" right now it is a disaster. Please if you have the time. I don't even have access to a rental power rake. That's why I'm considering buying a sunjoe, it would at least do something. I don't know at this point, I'm frustrated and have done most of what I thought would fix it to only end up at the same if not worse result. I figure this is the best time to tackle it because I have done tons of other things to the house I wanted done during this quarantine.
      Thank you in advance anyways,

    Instead of the levelawn, I'd use a long landscapers rake (the other side) or a pressure treated 4"x4" board cut to the length you need for the job. With the board, you'll need to screw in at least two eyelets big enough to thread a piece of rope through. Then you'll drag the board by hand or tractor over poured 50% topsoil/sand mixture. It's much cheaper and you'll get the same or better results. That's what I use to level my lawn.

    I feel your pain! Lawn leveling ## SUCKS ## I moved into this house about a year ago and this summer I killed my lawn, rented a sod cutter and removed about 2 inches of soil from my ~5,000 sq. ft. front lawn (about 80% of it anyway) to lower my lawn some (bonus - removed a TON of weed seeds with the top soil). Then after removing the soil I was going to use a drag mat to level what I could, but no, Mother Nature didn't want to cooperate and I had 3 weeks of rain and a muddy mess. I tried to level using a bow rake for a week until it was dry enough my lawn tractor wouldn't sink, then used the drag mat. I wish I'd had one with the nails or spikes but I probably spent 5+ hours with the drag mat. It's not level, but the grade changes are gradual enough that when I did my first mowing with Zoysia grass at 1.5 inches, there wasn't a great deal of scalping. Glad I saw this video with the Eco-Lawn Top Dresser - I'll be looking for one of those to rent for leveling out my lawn a couple times a year over the next couple of years to where I can get down to a 1.5 inch cut without scalping, and maybe down to a 1 inch cut. If you don't see me posting, you will know my wife murdered me in my sleep over this LOL. That top dressing tool is the bomb! I'm too old to be doing all of this by 100% manual labor.

You gave me a few pointers before I did all of this if you recall...at the time I was going to simple kill the lawn, rent the sod cutter and flip the soil but I changed that plan a little. That last week while the yard was still being rained on daily, my wife was out in the yard with the bow rake leveling the lawn some by hand each morning at about 6 am while it was still cool(ish). Man, I've got an amazing wife...and she thinks the work was worth it now that it is passed and the lawn has filled in a bit with desirable grass (Zoysia), but hopefully will not be opposed to a little more leveling over the next few years. When my dad leveled new lawns and gardens he built, he had a 12-foot piece of railway steel with a couple of rope lugs welded on to one edge about 10 feet apart. My brother and I would balance on the bar while my dad pulled it over the area being leveled. Then we would stomp all over it, rake it slightly, add more soil and do it all again until it was level and at the proper height. Of course that was back in the 50's.

    Try this for SUCK. When i decided to renovate my front lawn, I used a sod cutter and just removed the entire top 1 to 1.5 inches. Then I tilled the soil like crazy, far deeper than I should have. Then it rained and rained and we had little snippets of time to level the lawn with a rake, just moving mud. My wife helped. She glared at me when she thought I wasn't looking, but she got out and embraced the suck with me. My neighbor loaned me a drag mat, but it was too wet to use it for a week. In the end my soil was very level...not golf course level, but the changes in elevation were minor enough I could mow at or under 1 inch, except for the fact I'm required to have a drainage ditch and that makes it impossible to mow that low. All that work, and then we had rain for about 3 weeks and I didn't realize it washed away about 4-6 inches deep of soil, and about 6 feet wide, so I have to raise this a bit, bit by bit. I'd just throw soil on top, but I'm getting too old to do that after factoring in the work versus reward. On the plus side, by removing that top layer of soil, I removed 99.9% of the weed seeds. That renovation was the fall of 2019, and this past fall (2022), I got busy and didn't get a chance to put down a pre-emergent, and now it's almost February, 2023 and I have in total from my 5,000 sq. ft. front lawn, about 7 sq. ft. of clover mixed in, about about 3 sq. ft. of some type of wild onion, and no weeds besides that to mention. I'm back because I'm about to put down my Prodiamine in a few weeks and I was looking up your reviews on the FlowZone sprayers. Pump sprayers suck too, just not this bad LOL.

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  Год назад

      sometimes you gotta embrace the suck! that's a big issue you were dealing with. when i moved into this house the back yard was built like a roller coaster. lots of ups and downs varying about 6-9" in height difference dependinng on the area. I eventually dumped a few yards of tops soil in those areas and used a compaction device to fix it. It sucked but in the end it was worth not having the pools of water everywhere. Way to get out on the lawn. In the end its so rewarding. Slay that lawn baby!

    • @Troy-Echo
      @Troy-Echo Год назад

      @@pestandlawnginja Thanks Ginja! I bought the FlowZone 2.5V Cyclone and loving it! I only wish they had built the tank with a lower spot for the pump to make it easier to get the last drop out. They should have included the quick connect tip too so you could attach the T-Jet tips. It sounds like your back yard is lumpy and bumpy like mine. The new puppy is digging holes randomly, so once she outgrows that, I'll till and level the back lawn. And maybe drag a long 4x4 behind on the bare soil to see if I can do a better job at leveling this time, and switch out with a drag mat with the spikes up front. I'm not aiming for golf course flat, but better than I did on my front lawn a few years back. Do you know of any websites that aid in identifying weeds? I have something that I thought was wild garlic or wild onionin, and I have sprayed it 3x with Q4 (2,4D, Quinclorac, Dicamba, and Sulfentrazone). Garlic and Onionin are listed on the label. What ever that weed is, it's acting like I'm just watering it while laughing at me. I'll likely try digging up the bulbs next. It's Zoysia (in the transition zone), so if I kill a spot, it will eventually heal. For SUCKING, did I mention I tried removing the soil by hand after cutting it with the SOD cutter? I gave up and found someone willing to remove the soil for free to fill in low spots on his property. I figure I'll aerate this year. To level the front lawn a touch, I'll remove the plugs from the slightly higher spots and pulverize them over the low spots with the mower. The high spots will reduce slightly over time...I hope. I'm not sure how else to lower these higher spots without killing those parts of the lawn. The plan is good. The outcome...we'll see. I still love the channel. Besides the Zoysia SOD and seed farmers I bought my seed from, you were my #1 resource for knowledge. I used some of your advice over theirs at times. :0)

      @@pestandlawnginja To get rid of excess soil, I'd wager if you posted on NextDoor, Linkedin (?) and Facebook, as well as emailed multiple local landscapers that you had FREE soil or topsoil and it would go to the first person to both claim it and remove it, you may get people that would love to take the soil off your hands for free. Or, with luck, even sell it for a little profit. If not, you can still pass the savings or cost to the customer. I posted that I had free soil like this and two people wanted it in about 12 hours. Maybe I was just lucky. The first claimed it and was there with a Kabuto tractor and dump trailer in a few hours. He was thankful that he used the edge of his bucket while driving backwards to help level my soil between loads. According to that weed alert, the weeds are in fact wild onion or garlic, which should be killed by 2, 4D, which is in Q4. I sprayed twice with no luck, then came back and mowed the weed short, then sprayed again as the weed was actively growing before any waxy coating would form (if onion or garlic do that), but no luck. See, I've learned a lot from your channel LOL. I may try using only 2, 4D at the maximum application rate and see if I have any luck before digging or using glyphosate on a sponge.

    Thanks for the video. Of course I enjoy all of your videos I see though. I will have to see what the cost of renting a top dresser is. Planning on leveling a bunch of my yard next week. Might need more time than I thought though.

      Nice to hear you're out there slaying that lawn! That's awesome. Good luck finding the top dresser. its been a difficult one to track down.
