  • My guide to top dressing, leveling and overseeding your Bermuda lawn using a super high quality sand and soil blend. As a bonus you'll see how to seed arden 15 bermuda grass. The arden 15 seeding process is pretty easy so be sure to watch the entire video.
    I show how to top dress and level your lawn using tools ranging from a broom to a leveling rake. I cover basic and advanced lawn leveling techniques. The leveling mix I'm using for this top dressing project is from Super Sod. This top dressing leveling mix consists of 70% silica sand and 30% compost called Soil3 that is a rich source of organic material to feed the soil. Arden 15 is the Bermuda grass seed I'm using to overseed my lawn. It has better cold tolerance, deeper green and blends very well with Tifway 419.
    My top dressing process includes mowing your lawn short, marking sprinkler heads, core aeration, fertilization, top dressing and spot lawn leveling. Be sure to watch the entire guide for bonus top dressing and other tips sprinkled throughout!

    Ron, I started following your videos last Spring (2021) to get ideas regarding products to improve my lawn. We had major construction on our home during the summer and fall of 2020 and our once beautiful lawn was nothing but mud! Construction was completed the second week of December (2020) and I knew I had my work cut out for me in the Spring of 2021. I followed all your suggestions on lawn growth, seeding, fertilizing, cutting and tools to make the job easier. You should see my lawn now (April 15, 2022). WOW! Beautiful green thick grass is now once again a permanent feature of our home 🤗. I could not have done it without all your recommendations…I can’t thank you enough! Happy Easter, Ron!

    Hey Ron! I need your help! Yesterday we double aerated (removed core plugs), leveled whole lawn with river sand, overseeded with Monaco Bermudagrass, and applied compost with a compost spreader on top. When we used the spreader to apply seed and use compost spreader, the sand wasn’t leveled anymore. Do you think it’s okay if I lightly use a level rake in 3 weeks after grass emerges to level it out or is that bad on the new grass?

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  Год назад +2

      I would use the leveling rake now. It's not going to hurt anything to rake the seed in and knock down any high spots.

    Good video Ron! Did you guys buy that mix from Super Sod? That stuff is not cheap. I wish we had the access to equipment you do in your area. Just a personal observation, but the work you did in this video is kind of toward the higher end of lawn maintenance and how to get a golf course lawn. It's great too see and watch, but it may be out of the $$ range for the avg lawn guys. Looking like you're going to have a great year!!!

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  3 года назад +2

      I show a combination of techniques Brian. You don't need a dingo and top dressing machine to level your lawn. In this and other videos, I do show how to do top dress using basic tools. 😎 The only "luxury" tool I think everyone should spring for is a good leveling rake. It makes the job much easier. Keep in mind that what you're seeing on my lawn wasn't done in a year. This is year 6 of me working on it. The 7 bags of the level mix were donated by Super Sod. Alex and I paid for all the equipment and to have an additional 5 yards of sand delivered to complete the project. Thanks for watching. 🙏

    They never said having a golf course Turf Lawn was going to be cheap or easy especially if it is done the right way.....
    But I read comments occasionally that mention your old hobby used to be fast cars, so it's a possibility this is still cheaper. and cars certainly don't increase your property value either 😂
    In all seriousness, how did you like those big yellow bags of top-dressing you had delivered?

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  3 года назад +3

      Heya Jack Man 13. Having done cars, RC helicopters, and a few other hobbies I can assure that lawn care (even a golf course lawn) is FAAAAR cheaper. Like way cheaper. I really like the big yellow bags. The material is really really clean. Out of 7 tons of leveling mix, I pulled about a handful of small pebbles out. It's much better than previous leveling mixes I've used. Not cheap, but it is good quality material. Let me know if I can help with anything else. Appreciate you watching. 👍😎

    I have tall fescue in my yard.
    My biggest challenge is weeds. Particulary nutsedge.
    I have two pretty active dogs and I am resisting chemicals, but I know that is probably the best way to go.
    Having said that, what is the best product to minimize introducing carcinogens or other harmful toxins to my fur buddies?

    Hey Ron! I been subscribed to your channel for over a year now. I’m thinking on over-seed and leveling my lawn. But I am concerning with the fact that my current lawn has really cheap seed and has a combination of hybrid bermuda and normal bermuda. Do you recommend me to still do it a over-seed process or full renovation on my lawn?..
    I am not sure if I can overseeding every season with high quality seed will eventually replace my cheap bermuda. Or I just going to expend my money and time overseeding instead of full renovation. I have to be honest with you. Full renovation sounds like a lot of work. But I am confused on what to do.
    Thank you Ron

    Hi Ron, great video. I am trying to decide between the 36” or 40” R&R rake. Our property is about and acre with 3/4 of that being grass. I would probably do sections at a time with leveling. Which size should I go with?

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  Год назад +1

      If you're up for the extra workout, the 40" is a good idea given the size of your lawn. Either will work well though. It's not just the size of the rake, it's the extra material you're going to have to move around too.

    I have a question. If you usually use soil as dressing and then use sand one year. If I then go back to soil as dressing can that create problems with different layers on my lawn or is it not a problem? Thanks for great content :)

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  3 года назад +2

      I've always done light top dressing xray1337 so I've not introduced any layering problems. I suppose that if you started with a heavy soil top dress and put sand on top of it, you could be working against yourself from a leveling standpoint since the soil doesn't have the structure that sand does. Not an issue for most homeowner. Unless all your care about is leveling, I would go with a 70 / 30 blend since that's a good compromise between adding structure while feeding the soil.

    • @RonHenry

      I'd give at least a few months Bert. Realistically those pre-emergents can be effective for 4 - 5 months but after 3, you *should* be able to get some decent germination. It's a risk though. You'd have the cost of Arden 15 plus the watering bill associated with getting it established.

    Just a word about Big Yellow Bag - the product is not consistent from franchise to franchise. What you received was exactly what I wanted and expected. However, I received a bag that was a high percentage of their rich black garden soil and hardly any sand. No good for top dressing if the goal is creating a sand cap. I had asked for the ratio of sand to peat moss (which was another problem - it was garden soil, not peat like the website said) and they said it was a trade secret; they wouldn't answer the question.To make a long story short, I had to send back my two bags and go with masonry sand.

      Heya Frank. Thanks for letting us know. That's definitely something to bring up to them when ordering the leveling mix; that it needs to be a 70 / 30 blend so that you get the best of both worlds. I'm not sure why they call it a trade secret. It's on their website that it's 70 /30. I don't believe there's peat moss in Soil3. It's grass, wheat straw and manure. • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  3 года назад +2

      Hi Spencer. The hardest part of getting Bermuda to germinate is keeping it moist for 3 weeks. For most people that means watering 2 - 3 times per day or 3 weeks. That equates to a pretty nasty water bill that month. Killing off the existing grass and seeding from scratch is a great way to get a consistent result. A few months after establishment, you should be good to top dress it. I probably wouldn't aerate though since the roots aren't going to be too deep in a couple months. So say you seeded now and the lawn started growing in by early June. You could lightly top dress in light July to early August. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

I have found that it is alot harder to find the top dress machine then a dingo. Although Toro does have a shortage of the dingo's. Hey Brother Hope everything is well with you. I haven't made the livestream as I work nights, SUCKS!! lol, I always watch it on monday great info and questions man. Quick ?'s Ive Use Prodiamine on lawn late Februarry, does that mean i can't reseed this year? I also removed a tree from yard that was casting tons of shade, and now am ready to seed area, any ideas on materials i can use to prevent depression on my lawn where tree once was? Ive completed my lawn leveling project last month, lawn is recovering well. I ran out of cash so will push reel mow this year and decide on TruCut/GM next season. Rome wasn't built in a day. Again man, thanks for everything youre putting out there. Great stuff. Bess up bro.

      Heya Frederick. If the tree was removed after the Prodiamine application, you can probably plug that area and get a good result. That would be a great way to get the area to fill in while ensuring the grass matches the existing lawn perfectly. Also cheaper and less headache than seeding. :-) I would pick up a plugger and just keep up with your manual reel mowing like you said. I manually reel mowed my lawn for almost 2 years before going to a TruCut. Like you said, Rome wasn't built in a day. Always fun to enjoy the process. Let me know if I can help with anything else. Thanks for watching the content. 👍😎

    Did the seed washout after yesterdays downpour?

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  3 года назад +1

      Heya SMK. Nope not at all. They're still there sir. No sand or seed lost. Even the front lawn which is heavily sloped didn't lose any sand. I really beat up the lawn with the aerator which likely helped it hold onto the mix a bit better. I posted some video to my RUclips stories yesterday and this morning to show the state of things after all the rain. Looking forward to seeing how it recovers. Did your lawn fare ok with all the weather?

Did they hook you up or did you pay for all those level mix bags? Anyway will let you know how it goes maybe send you a pic or 2 before and after leveling.

      Heya SMK. They provided the level mix but we still had to get more sand to do all the top dressing. The level mix is definitely quality stuff but like you said it’s not cheap. Definitely send pics of the before and after. It’s always nice to see how lawns are transformed. Thanks for watching man.

    New to your channel but its one of the best in content and making things simple for those new to lawn care- much appreciated. I have a small back yard that has some fig trees and grape barb (vine) along with a small patch of grass maybe about 300ft- my issue is they all share the same soil-so I am always concerned about what products I introduce to the lawn (bc it will get absorbed by the fig/grape roots as well. Any suggestions in regards to fertilizer/herbicide? The grass type is Scotts sun and shade mix but been over seeding the last 2 seasons with just perennial rye.

      Hi Frank. Given that you're also growing food there, I would stick to the more organic route. A great product to improve soil health that also has a lot of compost in it, is Essential-G. It would be great on both your grass and garden. golfcourselawn.store/products/essential-g%E2%84%A2-granular-carbon-free-shipping Thanks for watching the content sir. Appreciate the kind words. 👍😎

    So been checking out a few of these vids of yours. I recently did an 8k sod job on my front yard. Purchased this home 3yrs ago. Previous owner cut corners on the lawn. Only laid sod 20 ft from edge of house into yard. Front yard is 265 ft wide and 60 ft deep. Previous owner had home for 6yrs. I purchased the home and 3yrs in realized that the St Augustine would never grow out to cover front yard. So being I live in between Houston and Conroe Tx where we either get massive amounts of rain or no rain for 30 days with 92f to 100f deg everyday I needed to do something. Front yard had 7 pine trees 60ft to 90ft tall. Th excessive pine straw and cones year around absorbed every drop of water on one end of yard along with the sweet gum and black jack oaks and the Chinese ash the grass didn’t stand a chance. So I removed 4 pines 2 sweet gums and 2 ash. Ground all the stumps removed all debris and brought in 30yds of top soil 25 yds of farmers compost and tilled it all in. Extended sprinklers system with 3 new stations 11 heads and 530ft of pipe. Started watering about 30 minutes a day along with some real good rains and in 2 weeks my front yard is unrecognizable. My question for you is I would like to begin applying a leveling material. Since my lawn is so young I don’t want to weaken it. In a month the temperature here will begin reaching the mid 90’s f. I will of course continue watering all I need. I have a water well so unless we run into a 90 day drought I should be ok. So let me know what you think i should use.

      Wow MP. You're doing a MAJOR renovation. Very, ver cool. You can apply leveling mix without issue as long as you go light. Don't bury the entire lawn in sand. What you saw me do in this video about as heavy as you need to go. With temperatures going up, the lawn should push through the sane quickly and recover nicely. Between all the tree removals, stump grinding and top soil work, you're definitely on the home stretch. Keep going. The nice thing about leveling your lawn with a 70 /30 sand/compost mix is you can do it several times in a season if you want. The big thing is to go light. Thanks so much for watching and definitely keep me posted on how the lawn develops. 👍😎

      Hey Jack. Nope. I left it at the same mowing height. Just under 1/2 inch. It definitely makes it easier to work the material in.

      It wasn’t cheap John but still much cheaper than paying a service. Looking forward to seeing the results from the work. You don’t have to top dress with all the heavy duty equipment. Sand, wheelbarrow, shovel and leveling rake will get it done. Thanks for watching sir.

    How many yellow bags do you recommend per 1k to top dress?

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  3 года назад +2

      Hi Chris. It depends on how heavy you're going. I like a rate of 1 bag per 1000 square feet the first time you're top dressing. That should be enough sand to get a good result without going too heavy.

    Awesome video sir!! Grass seed for overseed goes down before top soil right? If I use a machine to lay top soil like with carbonizpn for example, should you still use the leveling rake to spread it or is that if you lay it by shovel/wheeel barrow? Cheers!

    Soil3 level mix is the best!!! Looking forward to the progression..
    Btw.. I'm mowing daily at same hight I've scalped the lawn.. it's gotten thicker but I missed mowing yesterday; and today (before the 3 days of rain we're going to have) I'm seeing seed heads everywhere.. is that a good sign? I've heard seed heads is a sign of stress in the lawn...

    • @RonHenry
      @RonHenry  3 года назад +1

      Soil3 is very nice stuff thimitri. I'm very impressed with the quality of it. Definitely not inexpensive but very good stuff. The seed heads shouldn't be around for a more than a few weeks. Just do you best to keep up with your mowing. PGR will help reduce them slightly but it's really only a 2 - 3 week problem for people that mow regularly.
