How to Top Dress and Level Your Lawn with Soil

- Leveling your lawn on a slope is a great idea for getting a smooth surface on your Bermuda grass lawn. For homeowners with a sloped front yard, the lawn care tips I share in this video will help you level your lawn using a leveling rake. There are a few subtle techniques with the leveling rake that will help you get a great result. The method is slightly different to how you would use a leveling rake to top dress a flat lawn. When leveling a slope, it's important to use the weight of the rake to do most of the work. The lawn leveling tips I share will help you get a great result.
While I usually use sand to level my lawn, this video is different in that I'll be using a purely organic mixture to top dress the lawn. I'm going with CarbonizPN from Mirimichi Green this time.
A lawn leveling rake is a very important tool for getting the best possible result when you top dressing your lawn. While there are other types of rakes, using a lawn leveling rake will save a lot of time during the lawn top dressing process. It allows you to quickly move the top dressing mixture around while simultaneously working it into the turf.
I also share a few bonus tips that will help minimize run off from rain after leveling your sloped lawn.

Price increase from $22 per bag to $59 per bag? Why so big of a jump?
Yeah 8 bags not going to happen
64$ per bag now😮
Wow!! I could maybe afford the $22.00/bag, but not $65.00/bag. Price jumped 3 time as much since the video was dropped!!@@ThanhNguyen-np9rn
Love this guy, he makes everyone's who is willing to follow instructions yard better.

Thanks so much Storm. I appreciate it.
You are a champ for continuing to narrate while doing that hard work. Thank you!
Thanks Alex. It's a lot harder than it looks! :-) I appreciate you watching.
Fair play Ron , good video. Great break down of cost even though it's for the American market. Glad to see you back and happy you got your mower fixed. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for watching Leon. The process should still work overseas. Even though you may not be able to easily get CarbonizPN, you can find a rich organic compost that's clean if all you're trying to do is improve soil quality.
Ron...great explaining and demonstrating.

I really enjoy Ron’s videos. As nice as his home is, I think I’d sell it and buy one with a level lawn😂
Great comment! 🤣
Man, you have that front slope under control! Good video
It’s slowly getting there Bermuda Brian. A slope is always a challenge when it comes to top dressing. Balancing act between doing a good leveling job and no going so heavy that you cause runoff issues when it rains. Thanks for watching sir. I appreciate it. 👍😎
You're lawn is gonna love that stuff.
I'm looking forward to seeing the results. It should do a great job feeding the soil.
This video is exactly what I needed. I recently purchased a home a few months ago, and the yard is totally hilly! I was thinking I would have to remove the grass in order to level out my yard, but I think this option is more efficient and cost-savings! Thank you, Ron!
Glad it was helpful Howard. You can definitely level a slope. It just takes a bit more patience and time to pull off. Let me know if I can help with anything else. Thanks for watching the content.
The quality of your videos is skyrocketing, Ron. Keep up the good work 👍.
Thanks so much Verron. I've definitely been working hard to make the content better. Glad you're enjoying the videos. I appreciate you watching. 😎👍
Great tips Ron. I will be doing my first lawn leveling sometime this season. Was hoping to squeeze it in for Spring but if not then definitely in Fall. I am going with a sand/peat mixture of 70/30 . The sod farm that I got my sod and seed from sells it by the sack delivered . 70% mason sand / 30% Dakota Peat that they mix and sack for you. I already have the exact same leveling rake so will be all set when I do it. Like the Carboniz PN for future use though
Very nice Striperman. Your lawn already looks really good. With a top dress and leveling job it will be pool table smooth. Really won't take very much. a 70/30 sand and peat mix sounds great. Especially attractive if you can get it already mixed.
Thanks, Ron for doing this. I know I’m one of the people that asked for this. I thought the video was great! I may try this product.
No problem at all Jordan. I decided to make it since it's a combination I'd not done before. It's an easy way to help viewers get started with top dressing. That's for watching sir. I appreciate the support.

That Mirimichi Green is no Joke. I spread some under my Celebration Bermuda before I layed it down. Now I'm thinking about getting 3 more bags and doing this. Talking about making the grass n dirt 😊😊 this is it lol.
They do make great products Cedric. Helps a ton with sod rooting. That's how a lot of professional landscapers use it around here.

Great video and explanation Ron!! I'll be putting down some Topsoil and compost at a 50/50 rate myself. Hopefully it'll work well 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

As always, great content Ron. I'm going to wait for it to get a little hotter in GA before I do some spot leveling, but I'm definitely going to use that product and probably mix it with some sand.
Great idea Will G. Mixing it with sand is good way to get the best of both worlds. When we get more heat, the lawns will recover faster. Thanks so much for watching the content. Much appreciated.
What type of sand should we mix it with?
@@markgillott808 I would use masonry / river sand. You want to use something that's more coarse than play sand.

@@RonHenry I subscribed and watched that video as well. I did some sprinkler adjustments which caused my lawn to become unlevel in many places. Ron, Enjoying the content you have been putting out. Do you have a video on how to seed/plant a lawn on such a steep slope? I can only imagine the challenge you must have in cutting on that slope with a Reel Mower.
Hi J Perez. There's not much to seeding on a slope. I ideally you'd put the seed down into something like CarbonizPN and then roll it in using the technique I show in the video with a reel mower. As far as mowing on a slope, I've got you covered. 😎 Here's a video on doing it with a TruCut: ruclips.net/video/7b7rX678VeQ/видео.html and one using a Greensmaster: ruclips.net/video/2oBX4nN28oo/видео.html Let me know if I can help with anything else. Just came across this channel today, but the quality of presentation, the production value, the narration work, it's all excellent - way above your current subscriber count. Keep it up and I expect your numbers to shoot up soon.
My only advice is that it feels like you're rushing your delivery, there's a lot of out-of-breath paragraphs. Feel free to slow down and catch your breath and take your time. Your content is engaging, we'll stick around for it!

My New Go To Channel for Lawn Care Advice!! Can't Thank You enough for all your content,
Awesome Job!! 2 questions,1. I have just under 6,000 square feet of lawn I'd like to Topdress soon, how much material (bulk) should I order? 2. How much would the Tru Cut reel mower that you have cost me brand new?
Heya D Cousar. Generally 1 yard of top dressing material per 1000 square feet works well. So for 6k square feet, you’ll want 6 yards. A TruCut brand new is around $2500 depending on options. Give the guys at Reel Rollers a call. They have really good prices. Tell them Ron sent you. thanks for watching the content sir. I appreciate the support. 👍😎
Great video! I don't think it should be that hard to make a leveling rake but I am working on my front lawn now and that's a possibility ... Cheers

Idea for another equipment review, a peat moss roller. You can do a drought video and use peat moss/hydretain as your solution.
Anytime sir. Glad to help.
I've done a video on watering that mentions Hydretain. I haven't done anything on peat moss though: ruclips.net/video/8WV3QGXcwbU/видео.html Thanks for watching sir.
Pretty good video! Man that stuff is a bit expensive. Great tip about using the reel mower to set it so it doesn't wash away!
It is a bit pricey to apply JaFearPlays. It's great if you're trying to create really fertile soil for seeding. The reel mower makes for a great roller in a pinch. Just make sure you disable the reel! Thanks for watching. 👍😎
Great video Ron. Two questions for you. 1. What is the next best mixture to use to level a lawn, and over seed in the same process. 2. When using this leveling method and you have areas that are much lower than the high points in your lawn. should these areas be over seeded, or should I just allow the grass below the covering to work their way through. Hope this all makes sense. TIA
golfcourselawn.store/blogs/diy-lawn-care/how-to-level-a-bumpy-lawn
Great video, thanks
Thanks for watching!
This would never work on my bumpy fescue lawn, but it is an interesting method and thats the first I have ever seen of a tool like that for leveling.
Yeah most cool season people with fescue don't both doing this kind of thing. Fescue is mowed super tall so unless you're trying to fix major dips in your lawn, there's not a ton of reason to do it. It's a lot more common with warm season grass that is reel mowed. Thanks for watching. Appreciate the support.
@@RonHenry Thanks for the info.
Anytime sir. I appreciate you watching.
Great channel. I've been watching a lot of your videos here lately. I just started putting quite a bit of effort into my lawn from a recent custom home purchase. Been working on leveling out the big spots from irrigation lines and getting new sod down. One thing to note, 3 years after this video, price has tripled unfortunately. Trying to use this, even in small targeted areas is just not going to be cost effective in my case unfortunately.
I hear you. Everything has gotten more expensive.
Bless you ❤️
Thanks Ruby Red. Glad you found it useful
Great post Sir.😀
Thanks so much Michael. Much appreciated. Thanks for watching.
That product is intriguing. But i can’t see why i would ever use it alone. I definitely would use it as a mix. If momma ever finds out I spent 400 on just leveling products , that would be the end of my LawnCare escapades. Hahahaha
I agree with your Frankie. Really the product is best used when mixed with sand. I went 100% CarbonizPN because I'm trying to help beginners get into top dressing. If I tell them they're going to have to mix this stuff with sand, it'll push some people away. It's a great way to improve your soil quality. Once they see how green it turns their lawns, they'll want to come back with with a full 70/30 or 100% sand top dress. Just tried to make it as simple and accessible as possible. I put it down fairly heavy obviously. 800 lbs over 2000 square feet is quite a bit. Will be interesting to see how the lawn looks. Thanks for watching sir. 🙏😎
@@RonHenry I totally understand your intent. Last year I did my own mixing of sand and OM to do a 3to1 ratio. I did it during the heat of SC and I thought I was gonna die in the process. So I totally understand not wanting to discourage the newbs. I think this year I may buy it pre-mixed. I’m gonna probably grabs a few of these bad for the spot leveling I always catch myself doing. Looks great for that.
@@FrankieKennethL Thanks sir. For spot leveling it's awesome stuff. The nice thing it's really clean so no issues with having to pick garbage out of your top dressing mix. :-)

he's trying to improve his yard that already looks absolutely amazing
It can always get better
Ron, I'm glad I found your channel. My new construction soil (common issue) has extremely low CEC level (4.5!). The builder basically removed all the good material, and I'm left with silty clay. My program consists of spoon feeding various fertilizers because of the soils low capacity to retain nutrients. I don't know how many years it will take me to get my soil up to par, but introducing me a products like CaronizPN are very helpful. Additionally, my front lawn has a similar slope. This was very helpful, thank you! If there's any other recommendations you have, I'd appreciate any response.
Hi Joe. It sounds like you're on the right track of adding organic material to your soil. CarbonizPN is a great product. I'd highly recommend it if you have the ability to spread it manually. For a granular option, there's also Essential-G. golfcourselawn.store/products/essential-g%E2%84%A2-granular-carbon-free-shipping Thanks for watching.
Looking good I think that may be better than sand by itself 😁
Ehhh. If your goal is to only improve the quality of your soil, then yes. If you also want to level your lawn, I would mix it with sand since that will hold the leveling job better than compost and biochar alone. Let me know if I can help with anything else. Appreciate you watching. 👍😎
Awesome video and very detailed. Trying to locate some Carboniz right now. Not easy to find.
I can see about adding it to my store if you like MurTEL. It will be more expensive than $23 per bag though because of shipping.
@@RonHenry There is a SiteOne near me, but I don't think they carry it. I am going to see if they can transfer it in for me. Shipping it would be way too expensive I think. Thanks
They should be able to get it Mur-TEL.
Dang this product has increased in price!
That's true for pretty much everything.
Just leveled my lawn. I think I may have had too much dirt though. I used a wide push broom to level. It worked well and a whole lot cheaper.
Glad you got a good result BH.
Hit the LIKE button before the ad was finished. LOL
No problem at all SK Aerials. I appreciate the support. Thank you for watching.
I think carbonized PN can be mixed with sand for a good leveling mix (70-30) ratio similar to golf course
..that way bringing the project cost down.
It absolutely can and should be Piyush Dimri. In this video, I just wanted to show someone new to top dressing how relatively easy the process can be. Mixed with sand, it would be substantially cheaper like you said.
Thank you for all the tips, suggestions, pointers and where to purchase the product. I will definitely be doing this exact thing this year. I have some spots along my sidewalk that need to be raised 2-3 inches. Is that too much at one time using this product?
Ehhh if you’re trying to raise an area 2 - 3 inches, I’d be sure to use some sand. It will hold the leveling change better than purely organic. You can probably build that up over the course of this season. Just do a little at a time.
Great video will follow your tips carefully! One quick Q. I have Tall Fescue here in Ohio and I’ve just over seeded because my grass dies every Summer in some areas. What grass seeds can overcome hard summers and Snow in Winter?
I don’t have an answer on that one Brian since My grass isn’t fescue. In the summer, keeping water on the fescue will prevent some of the kill off. Hope this helps.
Simple and great explanation. That same soil is $59.99 now :’)
Thanks Steve! You might be able to find it locally for $25 - 30. The $59.99 price is because of shipping. It's delivered to your door for that price vs. having to get it yourself. The extra cost is all shipping.
@@RonHenry ok that’s good to hear. I thanks for responding!
Hey Ron, I’ve enjoyed hearing the information you share on your videos. Which size metal soil leveler would you suggest buying from R & R Products? The 36”, 40”, or the 48” Level Rake for less than a 1 acre yard.
For most people a 30" or 36" is the way to go. I have a 40" and it's more work to use. If you have a larger lawn, a wider rake can be appealing. Just be prepared for the extra effort associated with using it.
Great video! What about using the best quality potting soils?
That works too Jerry. As long as whatever you're using is clean, you should be fine. CarbonizPN is about as good as you can get since you're basically topdressing the lawn with compost and biochar. It can easily be mixed with masonry sand for an excellent top dressing mix. I made this video targeting beginners who don't want to do anything of that. Pretty much if you want to turn your grass super green and leveling isn't the primary focus, it's perfect.
Hey Ron I'm about to start leveling with 100% sand for the first time.. I was thinking about stacking some organic material ..later in the season..that product is perfect 👌.. no matter how much it cost..ITS ALL ABOUT THE SOIL sir..with me thanks
Sounds great Darrell. When you do you 100% sand level, I’d try to put some organic material down before doing the top dressing. You don’t want to pass up the opportunity to improve the soil. Thanks for watching sir. 👍😎
@@RonHenry sounds great sir..were can I get carbonize..pn
@@fairwaybermudalawn if you have a SiteOne locally you can get it there. I can also see about putting it up on the store, but it will be more expensive because of shipping.
@@RonHenry gotcha 👌.. thanks for your info sir
@@fairwaybermudalawn no problem at all. Let me know if I can help with anything else
Thanks for Vid. Sure is easier to level out the top soil when your ground/grass is already level like yours, no bumpy uneven spots. a lot more difficult when there are tons of uneven bumpy areas. Anyhow, i live in Oregon and finally the Fall rain is coming in a few days. Would now be too late to lay down top soil and a little extra seed since the sunshine is going to be going away? I have quite a few bare spots/bumpy spots. Of course i would be scraping off the top dead grass first, but just curious if it will be a waste of time this time of year? Thanks!
This time of year isn’t the best Nick. When it comes to leveling, just start where you are. My lawn was uneven at first. It took several leveling sessions to get it where it is now.
First video I've seen from you and enjoyed it and hit the subscribe. I just moved from a townhouse to a single family home so I will be taking care of a lawn for the first time and I'm excited for the challenge. I mowed my lawn a couple days ago for the first time and the yard is extremely bumpy so this video was very helpful. I also want to overseed in the fall (Chicago suburbs so cool weather grass) do you have videos on that?
Hi Chris. I mainly work on warm season grass but most people that overseed their cool season lawns, do so in September / October. Much like establishing warm season grass, the reason why most seeding project fail is inadequate watering throughoug germination. Any idea what kind of grass you have? Thanks for subscribing and watching the content. Appreciate the support.
@@RonHenry thanks Ron for taking the time to reply! I’m not entirely sure of the grass type. I am thinking it is a tall fescue
Anytime Chris. I’ll do my best to help you out where I can. If my memory is correct, Fescue and Rye are fairly easy to establish from seed. It’s KBG that can be a challenge. You shouldn’t have issues.
@@RonHenry thanks a lot! I look forward to watching more of your content!
🙏😎
i know golf courses do the sand topdressing, but it holds no nutrients and it can never hold nutrients. I'm wondering how this will affect the grass long term? I can see the benefits for drainage, but to me it doesn't make sense as you'd need to spend a fortune to then fertilize and provide nutrients to the soil. I take out 2" cores every year and replace with a screened topsoil from my local garden center and it does a great job. I'm on clay soil, and it was pretty bad, but taking out those plugs, adding them to my compost, and replacing with good soil made a huge difference. I see a lot of great lawns doing the sand topdressing, but i'm really hesitant, it just doesn't make sense in my mind to put something that can never hold nutrients for the grass
I'd go with a blend of sand and soil.
Don’t think I’m ready for the sanding. Going the compost route is the ticket!! Thanks Ron!
Awesome Chris. That's what this video is for. Wanted to show people that are tentative about leveling their lawns how easy it is to do. After you get the first one done, you can always go back again with a sand / soil mixture. I appreciate you watching the content sir. 😎
@@RonHenry just checked prices at SiteOne. I need that follow up video with results ASAP.
@@RonHenry A great idea for another video is liquid Aeration. This season I’m trying out Air-8 to see the benefits on my yard. Want to eliminate the hassle of trying to rent a machine or hiring someone to mangle my yard. If I stay in this course how will impact future leveling choices? Thanks again for all of the intel!!
PS. Went to Reel Rollers and picked a Tru Cut last week!!
@@chrisdadda Heya Chris. I think liquid aeration definitely has some benefits Chris. That said, I'm still a fan of physical aeration too. It does a lot for breaking up compaction an fast tracking air, water, and nutrients into the soil. It's a great way to integrate the top dressing material into existing soil. Granted there are people that top dress their lawns and never aerate. It's just something that's made sense to me so I've done it.
@@chrisdadda has worked great for me!
Thanks for the video. How long after can you cut the grass with a reel mower without damaging the reel ( especially if you use sand only)
Hi Taylor. I'd wait for the grass to grow in before mowing. Usually a couple of weeks works well. You just want the sand to be settled and grass growing well before putting the reel mower back on it. That or raise your height of cut by a 1/4" or so just to reduce the chance of getting into the sand. Thanks for watching.
Up - Down - Up - Down... sounds like a morning aerobics routine...
Yep! Gotta put your arms into it John. :-) Thanks for watching.
Great video, Ron. Quick question: would I need to also lay down a fertilizer for grass growth ? Or does the organic mix you used include it ? Thanks, Ariel M (northern NJ)
It's up to you Ariel. Not strictly needed to fertilizer. More personal choice. I didn't in this video.
Hello Ron. How often should I water my new sod? It is only a few days old and I'm worried abt it drying out. I live in the middle part of South Carolina and just laid Empire Zoysia. The temp is mid to upper 80s the next few weeks with minimal rain. Thanks for the help🤝🏾
I’d only give it an inch to 1.5 inches per week Tim. That should be plenty to keep the new sod happy. I wouldn’t water it everyday. The heat will help the grass start growing well.
Just discovered your channel and am very appreciative. I’m considering doing some leveling on my centipede lawn. I’m trying to decide between straight sand, straight organic compound or a combination. Will the organic compound breakdown over time?
Hi Robert. Yep. Going 100% organic will have you leveling the area again. Probably the best compromise is to use a combination of sand and soil. 70/ 30 mix is the best of both worlds. Let me know if I can help with anything else. Thanks for watching sir.
Ron, I like using a 50/50 blend of the a PGA approved sand and high quality soil conditioner such as what you used in this video. My question is which option provides the best results on a slightly sloped lawn, as you have just done or the 50/50 blend?
If your goal is to level, you’ll want sand in the blend.
I have an approx 2’ wide indent that is approx 4-6 inches lower than the rest of my lawn due to in ground drainage pipe from my back yard running out of my front yard. Any tips for dealing with that? Fescue mix lawn in Northern California. Thanks!
Heya Brian. Yep. Great a mix of 50% sand and 50% compost and fill the low spot. Be sure to step on it to compact it in after filling it. You may have to do a bit of touch up after it settles, but that should correct most of the problem. Mow your Fescue tall so that there's still grass exposed once you do the repair job. Appreciate you watching.
AFA lawn airation, first, call DigSafe, then just put a 1" Irwin Speedbor bit into your drill (with an extension so you don't have to bend over as much) and drill a hole every 6-8" (or 8-10") throughout your lawn 6-8 deep (the depth of the bit to where it goes into the extension is fine as a depth gauge...).
Just remember, DigSafe only finds electrical cables, not oil, gas or water lines....
Appreciate you chiming in!
I had to sub
Thanks so much orlando B. I really appreciate it.
Hi Ron,
I just had an irrigation system installed in the Austin area - clay soils and hybrid bermuda. Any recommendations on how to fill up the trenches to help my lawn get back to normal? At $60 a bag, it would be very expensive to cover all the trenches
I would use fill dirt to fill the trenches and then top dress with a light coat of CarbonizPN to encourage the grass to fill in faster.
What are your thoughts on using one of those water filled lawn rollers before doing this leveling process. Waste of time? Would it help to “push” down any high spots beforehand?
Hi Todd/Jill. I've never used one personally but all the videos I've seen of them look pretty cool. They look like a good way to get fairly even coverage and save time too. I don't think it would replace a leveling rake for smoothing out low spots but as a way to evenly distribute peat moss or compost over a lawn, they look great.
