Just decided to chuck 2 inches of top soil over old lawn and put new lawn on top. going pretty well so far (3 weeks) but im not convinced im entirely level so im gonna be ready with this video in the back ground when im allowed to walk on it =P
I'm curious about bumps in the lawn that are higher than most of the lawn. A lot of spots could be leveled out but then there's still higher bumpy spots that need to come down. I don't want to level up to those high bumps. My lawn is so bumpy it's going to take a lot of soil i don't even want to think what that's going to cost.....!
Must have missed this video and am so glad i seen it now, have watched many videos about leveling lawns with sand mixes and never liked the idea of using sand more so with clay soil so delighted to learn from yourself just to use soil, great tip and many thanks.

One thing not yet mentioned is the fact that a dip in the soil might actually be a swale that is designed / intended to guide water away from structures and toward lower lying drainage areas. Filling a swale might result in water getting into the structure.
Keep finding these damn videos that already have a nice lawn started. I have an acre that’s been neglected for decades i have ankle breaking holes and lumps. Idk if they had a dog digging holes or what i even found old square post holes. I also have a leech field so no large tractors or land movers. Think this lawn is going to take several seasons to fix.
I moved into my bungalow some 25 years ago. Had front and back gardens landscaped with new lawns. I told the landscaper I wanted top quality top soil no builders rubbish no matter the extra cost. I am still digging up bricks and rubble 25 years later. Same with compost most of it is full of C***. Thank you.
I hope you’re still making videos. I just found your channel with this video. Previous owners of our home had dogs that absolutely wrecked the back lawn. I’m hoping next year we can get sprinklers but I wanna learn all I can!! Should I work on fixing the lawn AFTER sprinklers? It’s not a huge amount of property but it’s not small either. Thanks for a great video Robbie, I'm a complete novice and I have a long lawn which I've only recently got into renovating. I've got rid of the moss but I have patches where grass seed has not taken. I have loads of bumps and I want to use sports sand to level. Do you recommend I do this six weeks before I scarify my lawn?
Great video. I have a high spot in my lawn and to do it this way will raise my lawn height higher than the patio and it would take tonnes of soil. Can I dig out the high spot? I’ve also noticed that water collects in the low spots after heavy or prolonged rain. The high spot is fine. What can I do about these issues.
Digging out the high spot is probably your best bet, depending on how good the soil is, you could maybe use some of it to fill in the low areas. Ideally you want to use half decent soil in the low areas so the water can drain away
@@Premier_lawns_official Thanks so much for the advice. It sounds like I need to till the whole thing, level it and grow a new lawn. Probably the best way to go. Many thanks.
I’ve followed pretty much all of your videos and gone from what looked like corn stubble to a deep green, soft lawn. Now I’ve gone down the rabbit hole of lawncare, I’m seeing how bumpy my lawn is. My question is; it seems in my case that it would be less work to “cut off” the tops of bumps rather that fill in the rest of the lawn. Is this something that can be done?
1: Urine is a very good and free lawn fertilizer. I saw it particularly when a hose broke on my urine spreader. A couple weeks later it looked like our tall grass was three times higher than the rest and a very dark green colour, so diluting it is key. 2: If you have more of a meadow type lawn where you want ho preserve the biodiversity you can remove the top layer, fill in underneath and roll the top layer back. Or fill with very thin layers of soil over several years.
If you don't compact it, it's going to sink and still be uneven. Compacting it with your feet is the perfect weight as you are heavy enough to do the job
I have two active moles on 1500sqm, so it is more like a world war one zone... but the guys are just useful nd I rather mow over bumps and flatten their hills 🎉
I use half top soil half mason sand. First time I used only top soil with the rain it sunk some. I have Bermuda and it grows on anything. Some people are not a fan on using sand but in my case it worked perfectly. It leveled my lawn faster and grass grew without problems
Did this in my lawn this Easter, noticed some cracks and almost flakey like surface to the topsoil though, not sure why it’s happening, is the top soil drying out too much?
Interesting find - the accent is a good exercise for this American ear. I find it a bit curious, your leveling is only filling - do you not dig out obvious high spots ? Well done, thank you.
You never know what will be down there, it's easier to go up than dig down. Yes it takes a bit more material, but it's just easy and easier often makes for cheaper in the long run too I have English subtitles on all my videos, as not everyone can understand my broad Northern Irish accent. Thanks for stopping by, and welcome to the channel
Hi Robbie, thanks for all the videos tips and tricks. I'm levelling my lawn but I bought turf soil. Is there a major difference between turf soil and top soil Thanks
my border collie has worn a run track now each winter in my lawn (live in wet Wales!) any good tips to stop that other than keeping dog off the lawn???
Hi, this might not be the right platform to ask this question, but here goes. My garden is really uneven, I want even it up as cheaply as possible(it currently has patchy grass), I can get hold of fresh horse manure, can I just throw that on and keep leveling it, or will burn the growing grass?
Horse manure won't do it. Chances are it will burn the lawn. But that's not the main reason for NOT using it. Horse manure will break down over time and your lawn won't get any more level, it may end up worse if anything

I have a home builder saying they’ll use grade sand to level my lawn. Is this okay? It’s what they use with the clay soil upon construction. I can’t find what grade sand is composed of. They filled in a gap at the foundation with an orange grade sand, and they said that was the best kind. I’m just wondering if this is the proper material to level my Bermuda lawn? I’ll be meeting with the builder and contractor tomorrow, and the leveling done on Saturday. Thanks for the help!
i need to put about 8 to 10 inch of top soil around my house to keep the slope for water , can i put it on top of my existing lawn ? what should i do to not take the lawn out first i just want to save myself that trouble and money renting a lawn remover machine
Very helpful. We have a large area (15ft X 20 ft) of wood chips left over after grinding tree stumps. Can I use the wood chips to fill in the uneven area and cover with.top soil to grow the grass.
Do you have any thoughts on old, decayed tree roots? Do I need to remove them or can I just fill in where they've decayed/sunk down? I think the previous owner took the tree out about 10 years
Depends on where you are in the world and how hot your summers are. Here in the UK you can do it from the spring onwards and through the summer into autumn. Warmer countries, you're probably better off doing spring or autumn, with the preferable time being autumn as the soil is warm and damper
i had a deep hole as well filled it with 2 sacks of soil, new seeds etc. The problem is not the grass on my filled hole grows 5 times faster than the rest and also its much greener
Thanks a mil Robbie, I've 1500m2 of lumps & bumps so probably a few years work. Is the spring a good time to start ie now, or petter to wait till after the summer eg September?
@@Premier_lawns_official for sure, am planning to do 2-3 passes this year & repeat next year. My other challenge is that it's a relatively new lawn (9 months) so I don't want to cut it too tight (to see the dips) too early

Hi Robbie, apologies if you’ve already answered this, but what time of year can you do this? Just moved into my house and it needs doing, im in the UK.
Any advice on best time of year to do this? I’m in east of England. Assume early spring when grass will be growing vigorously?
After the frosts have passed, you can do it the entire way through the summer and into the autumn too assuming that there isn't a hose pipe ban
You should see a doctor about that.
,👍
Should I get rid of my weeds and the like before leveling and seeding?
Hi could I ask what fertilizer can you put straight on after overseeding please
Hello, nice video... If you walk on in doesn't that compact the soil making it harder for the seed to penetrate through the soil?
If you don't compact it, it's going to sink and still be uneven.
Compacting it with your feet is the perfect weight as you are heavy enough to do the job

Do you have any thoughts on old, decayed tree roots? Do I need to remove them or can I just fill in where they've decayed/sunk down? I think the previous owner took the tree out about 10 years
can I do this in autumn or do I need to hold off until spring?
Autumn is a great time to do it, but make sure to do it before it gets to cold 👍
Hi Robbie is that a job that can be done at this time of the year or is it better to wait till spring?? Thanks
Depends on where you are in the world and how hot your summers are.
Here in the UK you can do it from the spring onwards and through the summer into autumn.
Warmer countries, you're probably better off doing spring or autumn, with the preferable time being autumn as the soil is warm and damper
Manchester in the UK, so sounds like I should be OK. Many thanks
What about bar spots, will grass seeds grow through sand or top soils???
That's why you seed them
I put some seeds down then covered them up with top soil, very lighly. not sure if they will jerminat.
Thanks for the vid. Topsoil is better than sand ? Another question : is a drag mat usefull for this kind of job ? Thanks
A lawn lute is the best tool for this job, you can of course still use a drag mat
Great video, thanks for posting
Welcome to the channel
what about the stones when using a cylinder mower??
Rake them off the top 👍
i had a deep hole as well filled it with 2 sacks of soil, new seeds etc. The problem is not the grass on my filled hole grows 5 times faster than the rest and also its much greener
That can be an issue, the newer grass seeds are bred to be greener etc.
@@Premier_lawns_official it's a very big issue my friend, I regret filling up this hole, I wish I left it the way it was , it's awkward now
Looking forward to the results
I will add a post in a few weeks on the community feed 😁
@@Premier_lawns_official this channel or somewhere else?
Love your videos 😊

Thanks a mil Robbie, I've 1500m2 of lumps & bumps so probably a few years work. Is the spring a good time to start ie now, or petter to wait till after the summer eg September?
I did this last April, wait until the heavy frost has passed and you will be good to go
Why not break it up into sections
@@Premier_lawns_official for sure, am planning to do 2-3 passes this year & repeat next year. My other challenge is that it's a relatively new lawn (9 months) so I don't want to cut it too tight (to see the dips) too early
Peat moss also really helps cover the seed to prevent pesky birds
