as quite a few have pointed out, each cat has a distinct personality. they're excellent boundary-setters, something I aspire to learn. you really have to invest your time, energy and care into them to really get to know them and earn their trust. personally, to have a cat love you is possibly one of the most rewarding feelings
And that is why they are such great pets

I was someone who "hated cats". Until I found an abandoned newborn litter and cleaned/nursed them for a day (and fell in love) but then had to separate from them after dad called the ASPCA.
I realized my hatred for cats came from just loving dogs and not really having much experience with cats besides television and a few brief encounters. And our society for some reason makes us feel like we have to be one or the other. Dogs are easier to love because they're usually so excited and loving. But cats are also precious. 90% of people who "hate cats" dont really hate cats.

I like both well enough. I wouldn't think of owning a dog, because I'm not really an outside-person and prefer the less-dependent style of cats, so I'd wouldn't have to be with it 24/7.

The "our society" part is true as long as you make it true, I think. People prefer to belong to groups, so they can feel supported in their opinions and habits, while at the same time have a common 'enemy' to make fun of. As long as you don't let others' preconceptions bother you, you're good to go :)

Total dog person for my whole life. Love dogs and couldn’t imagine not having one or more in my life at anytime.
I’m 57 and we just got a kitten for the first time with 3 dogs here. I’m converted! Love the little thing! So easy to care for, so friendly and fun and my dogs love her too!
Have a 3 month old puppy and they love each other. It’ll be fun to watch them grow up together.
I didn’t know what I was missing out on by not having a cat.
I know that puppies generally keep their same personality traits when they’re adults. Sure they act more like an adult dog, but they still have the same personality they were born with.
I was wondering if cats are like that? I know she’ll act like an adult cat when she’s older, but her friendliness and her liking to be with you I’m hoping will stay?
generally yes, by about 3 months old they're pretty much the way they're going to be for their whole lives. At least in my limited experience

Yeah she’s a great little kitten and gets along so well with her big puppy “brother”. She’s going to be an indoor only cat but she has a ton of space to live, basically half my house all to herself. I use a puppy gate to separate her if she needs some “No Dogs Allowed” time, so no stress for her.
After having so many dogs in my life I really appreciate this little cat! So funny, playful, cuddly and friendly and sooooo much easier care-wise than a pup! I don’t know why I never got one before?
I think some cats may have “teenager” phase where (like teenagers)they get more grumpy and less cuddly for a bit, they’ll calm down after the phase ends.
I’m not sure if this is true but that’s what I’ve heard! ☺️

When i was in secondary school I had a female cat. I used to get sick all the time and would end up at the hospital every month. I always had to lock up my cat first, because she would end up escaping and following me all the way to the hospital and stay until I would come out. And when i used to stay sick at home, she would never leave my side. I miss her so much.

The reason cats bite suddenly while you’re petting them is because they’re overstimulated. It’s their way of telling you to stop.
I have three cats with different ages and none of them bite me. I observe people and I think they just don’t know how to deal and cuddle a cat. They aren’t soft, they cuddle like they would cuddle a dog or something. And they don’t do it in the right places. My cats are never enough of my touch, sometimes I get tired to cuddle and they don’t want me to stop. You just need to do it right.

Most animals I’ve met, when you show them love, assuming they are feeling normal (not like agitated, panicked or so), they usually show love back to us too. 🥰
I never hated cats, just didn't really like them. Then a black kitten showed up hiding under my cabin. The plan was to catch him and take him to the Humane Society. I picked him up, he looked at me with wide green eyes and started purring. I was done for. I have been his pet human ever since. I even adopted a buddy for him, so now I have two. Best things that ever happened to me.

So sorry for your loss.
Growing up we were a “dog family” until we got a cat when I was 16 and we then discovered we were all more of a cat family. I am nearly 40 now and live alone other than a furball who is right beside me currently bathing himself.
"cats don't like me" but consider that the only time you've met them is when you've just showed up in its house to hang out with it's owner and it has no idea who you are.
True my cats are weary of strangers but around me they act like angels well not all of them but that's beside the point

The white kitten : I'm the choosen one.
Cats typically give warning signals before they're going to scratch or bite. If you don't know the cat, you might not recognize those signals and get a couple slaps. Also, cats aren't fragile, but they aren't indestructible. Don't yank on their tails, throw them around, smack them, expose them to prolonged terror (a jump scare isn't bad) ect. Whenever I see a perpetually aggressive cat, it's usually because people do these things and think it's funny when the cat freaks out. Then they wonder why Fluffy won't let anyone near without unleashing the claws of fury.

Idk why hating cats is such an accepted thing but disliking dogs is vile. I love both animals, but I’ve seen friends say they don’t like one or the other and the reactions are so different.
I guess I'm vile then, and I'm not ashamed to admit it one bit and I don't care what anyone thinks of me as a result. I'm bewildered why anyone would want to have a dog as a pet. You have a choice between an attractive, good smelling animal that poops in a box and gently purrs, or one that looks like a mutant version of that, smells bad when dry and worse when wet, poops on the floor, and obsessive-compulsively makes ear-wrenching short loud yells. Why is anyone on Earth making the wrong choice here? Is it mass psychosis?

I’m allergic I once had a cat when I was young and it scratched me when I patted it. It hated me but then I kept sneezing and my skin got puffy around her so we had to give her away luckily we found her a nice home with a 67 year old woman who’s cat just died so she is happy now :)

I have a gun that has a very accurate scope on it. I kill every cat that I see roaming around outside, whether it has a collar or not. You cat-lovers own 100% of the blame. I am saving the lives of thousands of other animals for every cat I kill. It's a reward in itself. If you want to keep your cats safe, KEEP THEM INDOORS AT ALL TIMES!
Moral of the story is: People who don't like cats are probably afraid of cats and have never had a good experience with a loving cat.

I grew up with dogs but then when I met my husband he had a cat. Now I can’t imagine my life without my cat. ❤
Dogs are pack animals and require constant attention and love, cats are solo animals. People who dont like cats are usually more controlling, they want their pet to do whatever they tell them, which dogs will do. Cats will love you, but they aren't your slaves, they dont want to be controlled.
