      I'm clearly in a minority in this comment section. H2 is the 3rd best sequel after H4 and 2018. Being 4th overall is *NOT* a bad spot for this film
      ●taking off the nostalgia lens and trivial pros of the style being *VISUALLY* similar to the original....hear me out...
      ●H4 has a great character duo...Rachel is not completely selfless or selfish..acting like a typical teen..and jamie is obviously troubled by her family past. They actually get to interact with Dr. Loomis more than any other character, Laurie included..beyond needing a simple rescue at the end.
      ●Thematically...it does Michael justice by making him a monstrous presence that actually inflicts terror on the whole town...not just the TV news/hospital...he actually cripples and terrorizes haddonfield in his time in H4 and he isnt constrained to a single location...much like the original.
      ●the fall atmosphere is done better here than H2 despite h2 being the same night...how does the town lose halloween imagery? overnight no less...
      ● you say you love the H2 ending....but you cant ignore the curveball ending of H4, which ends the same way the original one began...which is iconic to horror in general...bc it actually had nerve to try something different...much like the 1978 original.
      ●2018 does a lot of what I say ^^^^ so I'm not gonna repeat myself.
      *I will 100% agree that H5 onwards really fails* ...and it's easy to see why and I wont argue....but H4 is criminally lumped into the general trilogy despite it working as a standalone.
      H2 is a guilty pleasure of mine...but seriously..so many people see this as the top of all horror sequels despite it not reaching great heights....not that it does a lot of bad.
      I mean nothing happens(that actually matters) apart from the first 15 minutes and last 20...bc Laurie is underutilized and Loomis is halted by plot forces...so we get a very cookie cutter sequel...which brought an element of family that defined a franchise.

      Yeah Halloween 2 is far from perfect, but I HONESTLY enjoy it MORE than part 1. It's iconic in it's own ways. The score is some of the best music in all of the series. The Hospital chase scene is eerie and iconic. And most of us love finale of the movie, where Loomis appears to sacrifice himself to end Michael's existence.

    • @blackraphael3594
      @blackraphael3594 4 года назад +7

      @mr . noname I'm not sure I'd want to touch it, lol. Like I was saying earlier, it's so iconic as is. When Lucas released the updated Return of the Jedi with fancy new CGI, characters, and scenes, people were like: What is this crap, and where is my Return of the Jedi?? You could maybe loose some goofy tropes here & there. And although I understand the reason for the " Samhain " school scene, it needed to be done differently...As at that point, it really felt rushed & tacked on. Maybe in the earlier scene at the old Myers house, Loomis finds a room that has several dead animal carcasses and a blood smeared Celtic rune on the wall (I imagine it shot like a scene from the movie "Seven").
      I'm one of the very few people that was ok with Michael being related to Laurie Strode, and the whole " hunting his bloodline relentlessly every Halloween " device. As a stand alone or anthology work, Michael having no motivation and just being "pure evil" works. But for a franchise with sequels, you need to give the character more depth. The Halloween novel that they hired Curtis Richards to write after the first film became a hit, gives all of the backstory needed. Essentially, near the inception of the Celtic race in an obscure Irish kingdom, a tormented Celtic demon/ A boy's cursed soul haunts Michael's ancestors after being brutally murdered himself on the night of the festival of Halloween. Fast forward to Michael's timeline, where we find that not only has Michael's relatives ( specifically his great grandfather ) had bizarre instances of either mental illness or mania, causing them to commit violent acts, but Michael himself appears to begin to show signs of not being fully in control of himself, especially when wearing masks. So, basically Michael's body is essentially a husk or shell being driven around by a cursed Celtic boy's soul, or demon, during the festival of Halloween period. He sits dormant until he's gathered enough energy to strike. But there is still a glimmer of Michael Myers inside there. There is a constant internal struggle going on between Michael & the demon (whom is immensely stronger than Michael)...Which from a writer's perspective could explain why at times, Michael bumps into people/ walks past children & babies, and does NOT kill them. If he was just pure evil - cut and dry, no one would escape his wrath. I believe that when Michael Myers commits a murder, all he sees through his tearful conflicted eyes is a hazy, red blur of blood filled rage that he cannot control.

    Halloween II was a stellar sequel. The fact it continues mere minutes after the first in the hospital was genius. Every time you see a movie ending after a major conflict, when the main characters are whisked away in the ambulance, it always gives the notion of safety, comfort, calm. The hospital is supposed to be a safe space so the idea that the killer would chase Laurie down to the hospital as she is trying to recover was a good move.

  • @SmokinKlocks
    @SmokinKlocks 4 года назад +629

    Halloween II is my all time favorite sequel. The fact that it starts immediately after the first. The soundtrack and cinematography is so eerie, it all ties in with this sinister feel. I love the POV shots, and after being shot 6 times and stabbed up by Laurie, Michael is now PISSED and not f*cking around... I understand why the writers / producers feel the way they feel about the film but from a viewer standpoint, it’s a perfect way to carry out the night he came home. I LOVE the ending, Loomis sacrificing himself for the greater good of Haddonfield and going out with his patient. To top it all off, the scene where Michael is walking out the flame and just drops and burns to chars. Standing ovation.

      @@SmokinKlocks its a guilty pleasure of my own. However, when you look at its flaws, it's held back so much I'm not sure how it's considered the best sequel ever. The characters don't get to do much of anything precisely because it takes place on the same night. There's almost no dialogue apart from Loomis providing exposition, and the relatable/eerie feeling the original had is lessened because no hospital is that empty in real life and is forcibly scary(albeit done very well) Then the reveal of Laurie and Michael being related chained the entire franchise until 2018. From a viewer standpoint, your points on it feeling the same and its ending are cool, but other sequels do most of the good points here but better. I would put it as the 2nd or 3rd best sequel for the franchise.

The studio forced him to, so he wrote it and one night not having a clue how to continue the story, he said he got a six pack, drank them all and at like 2 am he wrote the fact they were siblings. He also directed a lot of the movie, but he let his good friend, Rosenthal take directing credit (he did direct some of it).
      If you pay attention to the end of 78, it shows you his body gone, then they show all the different locations in the movie with his breathing. He said the ending is basically you can't kill the boogeyman(yes Myers is the actual boogeyman, carpenter said he is a human, but he has a supernatural edge) and he could be anywhere, or nowhere. It was supposed to be much scarier that this guy picked a random person to fuck with, so having them be siblings killed a lot of that.

Honestly torn between what would have been the best move, because Freddy put New Line Cinema on the map ( it IS lovingly referred to as The House That Freddy Built), but the 1st film falls JUSTTHISSHORT of a masterpiece because of that tacked on oddball ending.

      Highly doubtful ... lots of people *love* that whole vibe. But I'm one of the people who finds that whole thing rather asinine. All that does is make Myers a guy bent on murdering his two sisters. Adds nothing much to the plot. I often wonder why this connection seems so cool and fascinating to moviegoers. Carpenter pulled this idea out of a beer can, and people act like it's worthy of shock and awe.
      Plus, the first film makes little sense when you consider it after the sibling reveal: if Michael was so intent on killing Laurie, if that was his mission by returning to town all those years later, why would he taunt her so much on Halloween afternoon by showing himself over and over-- rather than sneaking up on her and butchering her like he did Judith?

    • @reptomicus
      @reptomicus 3 года назад +2

      @@eduardo_corrochio It makes more sense for people who saw the TV version of Halloween with the added scene of "Sister" scrawled in the loony bin. The seeds were sort of planted in the unofficial version of the first movie. For many years that version was the only one available on VHS which may have colored the perception of that plotline.

    • @eduardo_corrochio
      @eduardo_corrochio 3 года назад

      @@reptomicus You've made an interesting point here; a percentage of fans got to know this movie via its network broadcasts which included the sibling references (then they most likely watched the VHS or DVD and were all, "Where's the other scenes?" ... a syndrome which probably drove fans batty, like myself, LOL). Then when they saw Halloween II it was reinforced when Carpenter added this plot element in that film.
      I still believe that the link between Laurie and Michael didn't do very much at all for the story-- for me personally. Especially since Laurie has no idea in the first films that this maniac is her kin.

    • @eduardo_corrochio
      @eduardo_corrochio 3 года назад

      @dave4248 I'm glad you brought that to my attention; I knew there were some things in the 1978 film that just didn't work with the sibling connection ... I just wasn't sure, and you shared a really good one.
      In 2018 Jamie Lee Curtis said this about the retcon of the last Halloween movie, why the connection was cut:
      "There is nothing more terrifying in the world than a random act of violence, that is the root of terrorism," Curtis says. "Not that you see it coming, that something occurs in a horrible way, without you ever thinking it could happen to you, that's what made this movie so profoundly terrifying, is it was random. Now the story got twisted, and there are people who love that idea. Kevin Smith loves that idea of it being her brother. But to me, what's really terrifying is not knowing why this happened."
      I agree. Making them related takes away the wonderful ambiguity of this psycho's motives. And, apparently, a huge chunk of movie watchers _loathe_ ambiguity. They need heaps of back-story, theories, and all that stuff. They can have it, LOL. I like a monster who doesn't seem to have a clear agenda.

It's not perfect by any stretch, but for a film that didn't really need a sequel I thought, and still think this did the best job. People like to praise Halloween 2018 which is fine, I'd say it's third, or fourth best (toss up between Halloween 2018, and H20), but it doesn't do anything all that innovative to really justify it's existence, especially after so many sequels. It's true that by making a sequel to a lighting in a bottle type movie that Halloween 1978 was, nothing could ever be on the same level, but Halloween 2 from1981 for me personally did the best job. It made sense as a followup, given the ending of the first film, where as the other sequels seem to grasp at straws to seem relevant, or flat out become parody as a result.

With the exception of showing his size compared to the Marshall on the floor, or when he raised the nurse off the floor with the Scalpel. Should have kept those waste high angles. Halloween II is one of the best follow up sequels. So many victims and the chase scenes were more intense than the original… plus, they reveal that Laurie is Myers little sister.
    Halloween II is golden and John Carpenter did this with half effort! Amazing!

    Criticism from some of Warlock's portrayal of Myers as robotic, but I thought what impressed me was Myers' single-minded drive to kill his sister. Dean Cundey captured Myers as a "force" with his lighting. He was so damn successful with it he captured it again with robot agents in Halloween 3. Those best moments feel cathartic, like a visceral experience that cannot be understated. Myers' head turn for a moment in the hospital room after Laurie shouts his name (and getting shot in the eyes) is iconic because he drops his knife for a moment as if to remember for a moment who he was long ago. Once Cundey left, it was the end of Myers. For the most part since he's a bland piece of cardboard in a mask.

      @Nick Xero I think it felt more transparent in its attempt to chase the gore factor of the slasher trends of the 80s rather than focusing on atmosphere like the original. Outside of the argument of making them brother and sister, I still do not understand WTF the problem is with this film. Personally to me it is the most terrifying of the entire franchise and 2nd best after the first movie. The original mask looks more frightening, Michael walks and moves way more demonic and demented than he did in the first one. It makes sense since he got his eye poked, stabbed in the neck with a knitting needle, stabbed with his own knife and shot 6 times. After all that shit and he is still coming to kill, one can only understand that he is no longer human, but pure evil itself. Throw the random killer concept right out the door. I think the setting and the situation makes sense. Hospitals back in those times were scary and very desolate compared to hospitals of our modern times. I know someone who used to work in a hospital that was half functional back in the 1970's. The healthcare back then was not like it is in modern times. She said she could never watch part 2 ever again because it reminded her of where she worked back then. Also personally I like the camara shots in part 2. There are great jump scares and great suspense build up for many scenes. To me and many others it is the perfect direct sequel. As much as I enjoy and like the new movie 2018, part 2 is the superior sequel that captures the time, the setting and the feel that just can't be replicated today.

    Minus the whole Michael being Laurie's brother thing, I really like this movie. The 2018 one was quite good, but I like to consider this one the rightful sequel. It's got a lot of what made the first one so good, it's very eerie, the cinematography is shot so well. Like you stated Matt, it feels like Halloween is over, it's later in the night, but yet Michael keeps on coming. Since it's a sequel it's more to the point, more aggressive. I like the higher body count and the more inventive kills. It creates Myers as a remorseless, brutal, and innovative killer. I also paints him as this unstoppable force. That's who the Shape is, a man that's not completely human. He is as Loumis so wonderfully says, pure evil.

    • @itsalwayssomething7490

      Without the sibling angle, there is literally no reason why Laurie needs to exist as a character, especially in the newer films. She could have just moved away and Michael would have no reason to be connected with her. But, they brought Curtis back and took away the sister angle, and I don't get why these characters need to interact. The sister angle was still in line with MM killing his sister as a boy. I know Carpenter wanted him just evil with no motivation, but obviously there is some kind of motive he found to escape from the hospital, take a car and come back to where he grew up to kill. He could have just stayed where he was, or kept going from town to town. To me, the sister angle adds a layer that is intriguing, being that he already liked one. Just my opinion. I get why people don't like it.

    • @KingsNerdCave
      @KingsNerdCave 2 года назад

      @@itsalwayssomething7490 That's part of Myers though. We don't know his motivation nor should we. For some reason he just goes "her" and pursues her. And Laurie being haunted by him is the reason she stays prepared to end him.
