For me Evil Dead is one of those rare series without a dud. The original trilogy is great, the tv show is great, hell even the remake was awesome. Love it all
The first one is pretty terrible and something that someone would have to be absolutely stupid to ever show someone who had never seen any of them before....Its pretty terrible and has aged super poorly in every way, they were also trying to make the first on super cereal. Any time I've ever tried to get anyone into Evil Dead, I literally will not show them the first film. We just start at Evil Dead 2 and move on from there.
@@lutherheggs451 I just took some friends to a 40th anniversary screenings about 2 weeks ago. Out of the 6 of us 3 had never seen ANYTHING related to Evil Dead and all of them loved it. It's fine if you don't like it man but don't act like it's objectively wrong lol
@@SoundwaveMusic22 The 40th anniversary theatrical screening was my first viewing of the film, and I really enjoyed it too!
Truth💪🏼

Probably one of the greatest sight gags in any movie ever was when Ash cut his hand off, trapped it under a bucket, then weighed the bucket down with books. The book on top of the pile? A Farewell to Arms. 🤣
😅
Yeah that is a good one.
Nice moment, a farewell to arms is a good book though.
I speak for everyone when I say this video is *groovy*
No, YOU'RE groovy, Owen!

@@MattDraper you both are groovy.
There’s nothing like a Raimi movie. When I was younger I remember thinking his movies where dumb because of the melodramatic acting, the weird camera zoom, the silly bit in Darkman where his feet are quickly skittering on top of a car. I obviously didn’t get it. Evil Dead 2 and Darkman are now some of my favorite movies.
There's some major cartoonishness in his movies, but I think Raimi usually strikes the right balance. His less effective movies don't get that balance just right, but when he hits the mark it's really unique and fun
Agreed
Darkman was great. I loved it.
The origin story of the Necronomicon is briefly touched upon in the Ash vs Evil Dead show. I'd love to see a prequel based on that story. As for the trilogy, the sequel is my favorite because of its outrageous humor.
I watched them final last year in order, and I fell in love with the original trilogy, specially the 2nd one. I also liked very much the first season of Ash vs Evil Dead (because I haven't seen the next seasons unfortunately) and, even though I liked enjoyed the remake, and it's tecnically better, I still find myself going back to origins, the grooviest films of all time
I was grossed out by the visual effects from the first movie, but I picked up the new game to try out. It convinced me to give the other 2 movies a try. Honestly it was one of the wildest cinematics trips I've experienced in a while. The transition from pure horror to slapstick felt seamless to me. Like the Evil knew it couldn't just outright kill Ash, so it tried driving him insane. When that failed it just devolved into childish hatred and even used a clone of Ash himself to try to finish the job.
What a series
Greatest student film ever made. And its impact is still felt over 40 years on.
Rami never studied film. He just made the movie independently
His masterful balance of genres mainly comedy, horror and action means that he can go from The Evil Dead trilogy to Darkman to The Quick and The Dead to the original Spider-Man trilogy and even Oz The Great and Powerful with ease and his own unique signature style, it is one of the many reason as to why I’m so hyped to Doctor Strange in The Multiverse of Madness because you put Benedict’s interpretation of Stephen Strange and Sam Raimi’s style together plus the three genres I listed and you’ve got in my opinion THE perfect recipe for one of (if not) THE best MCU movies ever made
There Were Two other Rami Horror Films Matt forgot to Include ''The Gift'' & ''Drag me to Hell''!!
@@shawnswint1521 yeah, Raimi did go back to a few comedic horror movies (I say comedic horror as Drag Me To Hell had a lot of that exaggerated horror elements Evil Dead 2 had but leaning a bit more to horror rather than outright comedy)
@@ivanagustinortiz5237 Another thing. Did you Know Rami Originally wanted Bruce Campbell for the Roll of Darkman before Liam Neeson?
@@shawnswint1521 Neither of those were good movies by any stretch of the word good.....Raimi hasn't made a good/decent movie since Spider-man 2.
@@lutherheggs451 ''To Each his Own'' as they Say.
It's funny that you mentioned that when u saw the Evil Dead trilogy, you saw it in reverse. Same thing happened to me when I laid eyes on the trilogy. Also, I thought Army of Darkness was the best out of the trilogy because I saw the third movie first but Evil Dead 2 is now my favorite out of the trilogy. P.S: the Evil Dead remake is not bad in my opinion.
It's so weird to see this, because I had the exact same viewing order. Saw Army at an 6th grade halloween sleepover before I even knew what Evil Dead was.
I also enjoyed the Remake of Evil Dead too.
Just wanted to share! Have a good weekend, Jay!
@@thefunkinator2435 Thanks, you have a good weekend too.
Me too, I saw the third first and did not even realise there was other movies before it.
I saw it inward outward. 231remake
Same here: reverse order at a young age, settled on ED2 as the best.
No mention of Drag Me to Hell?
Oh well. I remember having fun watching that throwback to his older whacky horror career. :D
One thing from Evil Dead that I've seen referenced a lot is the, "Join Us" line, which is normally used for zombies, which feeds into the common misconception that evil dead is about zombies
Join Us was around way before Evil Dead. If there was any line that gets used from Evil Dead it would probably be I'll swallow your soul.
Hands down my favorite Horror-Comedies, and still awesome even after nearly 40 years. Groovy. EDIT: Evil Dead 2 will always be a masterpiece.
Evil Dead 2 is my all time favorite horror movie, so seeing this video really made my day.
honestly i can't believe the timing of this video. here i am considering watching the Evil Dead series since i knew it had started as a low budget film that gave Raimi and co. their push into the film industry, so having this video to watch has only further convince me that i ought to. Cant wait for more Halloween videos Matt! Take care of yourself!

Matt, my guy. Great video. I love the Ghost background music. Keep knocking out these 10/10s.
“It might surprise you that…Raimi is a Three Stooges fan first and a horror fan second.”
I can’t possibly imagine that surprising anyone.
Awesome video as always!! To me, The Evil Dead Trilogy is up there with OG Star Wars as one the greatest film trilogies ever made. Not only do all three films tell one continuous story, but each film could stand on its own without having prior knowledge, which is very rare when creating a trilogy.
For the record: Evil Dead 2 is my personal favorite as well.
I was just watching Evil Dead, and this popped up. Holy shit.
The evil dead films are horror perfection, each movie is different and has its own thing to offer, they each master various elements and versions of a Horror film, with the first one being a Horror Masterpiece, The second being a fantastical Survival gore fest, and The third being great action horrror.
I watched the series in reverse order too. Also, Army wss my favorite of the trilogy for a long time, but now part two holds that place. Though I love all three films for different reasons.
Love that Square Hammer is played behind the Evil Dead one footage.
Splatstick. How have I never heard a term like this before?! I love it.
YES,a evil dead video.
I also love the ash vs the evil dead show.
A lady brought her three-year-old to watch the 2013 remake of the Evil Dead?! What an irresponsible parent.
Wouldn't surprise me if that lady blamed the film for her dumb choice.
Man, I had all three films on VHS back in the day and I gotta say: VHS is the right medium for them. Looks so much grungier and totally adds to the creepiness!
Square Hammer! 👻 Evil Dead and Ghost two of my favorite things
When I was really young, someone told me about a movie where the woods came alve and would say join us. This was way back in the day. Rented Evil Dead and realized quickly it was the movie he told me about. Watched evil deal 2 and army of darkness both in theaters. Loved evil dead 2 and originally was not a fan of army of darkness.
Me either, but it has become my favorite of the series ironically.
@@Warghoul I really enjoy it but evil dead 2 is still my personal favorite
MATT DOING AN EVIL DEAD VIDEO???? October is BANGING already
Too bad his Evil Dead 2 video got taken down.
I watched the entire trilogy right after work on Halloween and it was the best Halloween I've had in a long time. It truely was one groovy night
Oh I’ve been looking for this
Are you gonna do a video on a horror show like ash vs evil or something like that in the future
Not sure. Maybe someday!
Super groovy video. Thanks Matt.
When I thought this channel couldn’t get any better. You drop this. Bro you reading my mind aha!
For me, this is my favorite horror franchise of all time! (There I said it! Fight me lol.)
Thanks for the video as always Matt. You're the best. Much ❤ as always 😊
Dude listening to my favorite song of my favorite band in the video about one of my favorite franchises all of a sudden was GROOVY
Ghost + The Evil Dead =
Damn that pencil in the ankle still makes me squirm, ouch 😱
Another key inspiration for the original ED was 1970's ultra-low-budget "Equinox," down to the cabin in the woods and the book that unleashes demons.
A GROOVY video, congrats!
Saw the first movie at a Drive-In theater in 1982, I knew within the first 5 minutes it was going to be a cult classic!
Awesome video, Matt!
Straight up my favorite horror franchise of all time and the show is just as funny!!
beautiful and brief covering of the films, that spans over the whole franchise. you even make note and addressed the differences between army and evil dead 2, as well as the new 2013 film and the tv show. well done Matt. I loved it, thanks
I should watch the first 2 movies. Ive only seen Army of Darkness amd I loved it
You make my long days so much more fun. Thank you!
Been a fan since childhood.. Well said sir!!.
I don’t think I can genuinely choose a favorite one out of this trilogy they’re all great for different reasons
Raimi’s camera work here inspired me personally to get into film not being hampered by a shoe string budget. This and Nolan‘s work on Following are among my favorite films and both with mere pocket change as budget while utilizing the ARRIFLEX 16BL offers hope to anyone interested in getting into film. Following still holds up today even. I’ve had RUclips videos cost nearly that much he had to work with haha
first video ive seen of yours, good stuff man
12:20 The timing of this is joke is great, nice edit.
I love that you have a Ghost song in here.
One of my favorite things about the series, is that Ash keeps retelling the story! He can't get the story straight on what happened after the first night. Lol 🤣
San Raimi is an absolute legend in the film industry. For pushing the standard in horror scene with Evil Dead AND the superhero genre with Spider-Man that fanned the fires of the cbm boom in the last two decades. Nothing but respect for the man himself. Can’t wait for him to do it again in Doctor Strange Multiverse of Madness
Man by every rumor/leak I keep reading, I've got my doubts/fears of it.
Throwing too much crazy stuff in it making it the Marvel Studios take on Batman v. Superman (at first started as one thing but ended up being a very different movie).
I LOVE EVIL DEAD! Army of Darkness is my absolute favorite!
Just been to see Dr Strange 2 ..... Ohhh Raimi had some fun nods in that
Blowing up 16mm to 35mm does not expose a budget. It actually heightens the look and adds production value.
Fuck yeah! Matt Draper Evil Dead video! A dream come true!!!
I picked up on that Square Hammer riff~
Brrrrruce Campbell is the finest man to grace the silver screen
all the other actors just degrade his noble sceeenes
The Evil Dead is one of my favorite movies of all time. I love its gorey aspects but what I like more is the fact that it was made on such a small budget and it makes me think that I can make a horror movie of my own one day no matter if you don't have a million dollars.
I have never been a fan of the reboot so much, and I still believe the original trilogy (notably the first movie) and the netflix series Ash vs Evil dead (I Loved it) are the greatest pieces of horror comedy so far. ❤️❤️🔥
Here In 🇮🇳 we have a similar horror filmmaker called the Ramsay brothers who would use similar (sometimes hilarious) ways of horror movie making 😂
Have you seen the show Betaal on Netflix? I loved it!
With the game around the corner, ive binged the entire series. These movies are just such a good time 😁
1:26 Didn't expect to hear "Square Hammer" but I am happy to do so
I remember watching this at five. I remember crying for my first time over a movie. Yes I cried for Shelley. Don't ask.
Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness serve as major inspirations for horror-comedy movies/TV shows conjured in my head. Same goes with a Devil May Cry film adaption I thought of next to plenty of homages to the game series.
A major problem (for me anyway) with the remake was its prologue. In the OG film, we discovered the horror at more or less the same rate as the characters. That eerie mystery fit the tone. The remake's cold open, on the other hand, tells you everything up front. Obviously ED2 and Army had prologues, but they were sequels with different tones.
Last night I watched for the third time the reboot; but it was the third time that I watched all the post credits… I was blown away finding out two “readings” and a final “Groovy” scene. Want a sequel to the reboot badly as well as Evil Dead Rise.
The Batman of the Horror Universe!
This is such a good video
I grew up a kid in the 80's renting 1&2 from Blockbuster video. Introduced them to friends at sleep overs. It was awesome!
Hopefully Evil Dead Rise revives the Ash Evil Dead series. I was so disappointed when season 4 was cancelled. We need the series back, and a few more seasons with a final conclusion to bring this long story to an end.
I love the slapstick humor of Evil Dead it's fun
Best Trilogy review ever. The Evil Dead series will always be a horror classic.
i saw evil dead 2 first when i was about 10-11, then i saw army of darkness at about 14-15 and then lastly i saw the first evil dead when i was 19 this was durring the 90's i graduated highschool in 1998. just for persepective. that said this franchise is so impactful , my brother , who hates watching tv and movies , even he loves evil dead franchsie and views it as one of the best movie series ever.
I fucking love that you played "Square Hammer" by Ghost in the entire video
Using a Ghost song as background music for an Evil Dead video is probably the most adequate thing ever
This is amazing. Well done video. Love these films so much
At a kids birthday party we all went to blockbuster we were like 11 and picked evil dead 2 based on on the name box art thinking it would be terrifying but instead we sat laughing w smiles wich we would say ash lines all through school high school and even now we get together to watch the series and the remake.army of darkness gave me a chance to bond with my father and we just lol together and re watch it little too much.now my kids are saying the lines.when family comes together with such great movie memories.my son has my army of darkness poster on his wall drew his own evil dead comic and thats how you know you got gold
Absolutely hands down. My favorite
Great video and I love the whole franchise it's awesome.
Episode 1 of ASH vs EVIL dead was directed by Raimi and that one hour alone feels like a true evil dead 4
Huh, wonder if Matt would ever do a video on Darkman?
I love the Evil Dead franchise, it might be my favourite horror franchise because I like all the films including the remake which is something not a lot of horror franchises can say
Hail to the King, baby
Square hammer caught me off guard ngl
I got into the series about 4 years ago. I love the series. Of the three movies the Original is my favorite while Army of Darkness is my 2nd pick. I like Evil Dead 2, but of the three films I think the video quality/ effects aged the worst. Some of the effects are great but I think the claymation just takes me aback with how much emphasis it had on certain scenes. But it also has my favorite scenes out of all three.
I started rewatching Ash vs Evil Dead, loved the first 2 seasons, enjoyed the 3rd one.
felicidades con este buen video a una gran trilogía de culto. Saludos desde Ecuador.
I love the evil dead franchise saw it when I was 4 or 5 and grew up watching horror before cartoons and loved ash as a character because apart from breaking the rules in filmaking and inventing new innovating ways of horror they also broke the rule of making a guy the last survivor in the horror genre where it's predominantly women who survive aka the final girl trope and as for the new movie they can try and hell maybe make a great film with evil dead rise but the one thing I hope they don't give the new female protagonists is the look of ash as in the chainsaw hand and double barrel shotgun and personality don't get me wrong they can have other weapons to survive but that iconic look is ash's alone I hope they atleast respect that.
p.s there's a film analysis of the character of ash williams in the evil dead franchise called
a look at: ash williams asterisk
I've also got the prequel to Evil Dead called "Within The Woods".
A perfect documentary of the Evil Dead franchise 💀 🎬 🖤
i remeber when i was little my folks showed me army of darkness, it scared the shit outta me but i came to love it years later, then they showed me evil dead 2 when i was 12 and i remember it haunting me for weeks lol
Let's hope that new game gives Evil dead the spotlight it deserves.
Evil Dead is one of the few franchises that has the hero be more iconic than a monster
Just watched Dead by Dawn last night for the millionth time since 1987…like watching it for the first time, just a delightful, perfect movie.
Ash Vs the evil dead is greatness, and the perfect epitaph to the series. I too started with army of darkness, and enjoy evil dead 2 the most.
Great video!
Something I always see Reviewers forget to Bring Up, when discussing The Evil Dead is that Joel Coen ( Director/Coen Brothers )was literally RUNNING the Shaky Cam at times, later utilizing Camera Techniques learned from this film , in everything from Raising Arizona to Millers Crossing to Fargo, etc....Joel had several jobs as a Productuon Assistant on this film, and Ethan was thier too. Their involvement with The Evil Dead helped them get financing for their first film Blood Simple , which has Evil Dead ,Scene Blocking ( Design ), all over it
6 Degrees of Independent Film Geniuses
I seen the first one when i was about 10 and it both scared me and excited me. I seen the second one about 13 or 14 but thought it was the first one and couldn't believe i was scared by it. I think the second is my favorite but i love them all.
Seeing it tomorrow in theaters for the 40th anniversary!
Great vid! I'd love to see you do something similar for Peter Jackson's early films, since he had a strangely similar career as a filmmaker.
Split tie for me, 2 and AoD! I go back n forth which one I love the most, I have Ash from ED2 neca figure I can't bring myself to open and I sought him out so maybe 2? Lol I love them all tho. Tempted to track the games down even though I heard they were bad but they can't be worse than what a lot of people are paying 70-80 bucks for nowadays (some good titles tho). Hail to king baby, Bruce Campbell plz outlive us all! 🥺
