  • A retrospective covering Steve Miner and Kevin Williamson's Halloween H20 and its abysmal sequel Halloween Resurrection, the two movies that gave new life to the franchise and then quickly killed it, covering the origins of H20, the behind the scenes turmoil, what led to the disaster that is Resurrection, and the legacy of these 2 films during the strangest time in Michael Myers' history.

One of the funniest things I ever saw was from Halloween: Resurrection. I was there in the theater, kinda laughing to myself at just how bad and generally not scary it was. It ends and the lights come up and I see a teenager get up, looking absolutely terrified and pale. And he just vomits on the floor. Normally that would gross me out but the thought of someone disturbed at such a bland, bad horror movie has always amused me, instead.

I partly agree. But it's not true for every timeline! The OG/COT timeline has a good final film (if you take the Producer's Cut as the canon ending to the timeline!). The Producer's Cut of H6 is a decent sequel, Donald Pleasense even said it's script was the best since the OG Halloween. But the Weinstein gore cut that calls itself the Theatrical cut is the worst, even worse than Resurrection and Ends, cause it is tons of plot holes, with the important elements (curse and cult) cut out and the flashes and soundtrack destroyed the whole movie. No wonder Paul Rudd didn't like this cut of the movie, he hated what they did to his character in the reshots, because they destroyed Tommy Doyle and made him stupid.

H20 was not even remotely close to anything near "best" anything. It was just as garbage. Dead Dr. Loomis somehow having files telling anyone where felon Laurie Strode who faked her death lived, the authorities would like to know since its a felony and Loomis would lose his medical license as he would be considered an accomplice. Somehow Michael Myers driving a beater all the way from Illinois to Northern California on one tank of gas unnoticed, on top of the mother not reporting the car stolen at all. LL Cool J and the constant reading his romance novel or just phone calls with his wife. The movie was just as bad. It was Dawson's Creek meets Halloween. Thats not even getting into the mask that constantly changes even between scenes since there were 10 different masks.

That sounds way more interesting! You could honestly do this sequel without putting Laurie in a mental home for years or killing her at all. Between sequels it's been a few years. Michael has limped back to his house in Haddonfield to heal up and wait out - he survived by switching corpses but no one knows (if you recall the ambulance actually blows up and is on fire at the end so just say the fire spread and burned up the head too).
Meanwhile Laurie's son has Something To Prove as his character motivation since hey, he essentially ran away from the last movie right? Of course even he doesn't want anything to do with a reality show in Michael Myer's house, but is tricked into joining the production somehow by the sleazy producer. This turns into a fight for survival etc. with Hartnet stepping into his mom's role and doing his best to lead everyone to safety.

I don't understand why they changed it last minute (you can still see the parallels of both timelines, like Laurie's "death" or the H6 mask and jumpsuit in Michael's first scene (wish they had stuck with it, wouldn't have made Michael look like a clown, would have made him scary again).
We even have comics that connect H6 PC and H20. If they made it canonically one timeline, then I would have had no problems with that movie.

H20 is my favorite Halloween besides the original.
I find it deeply comforting. Like the 2018 Laurie, she’s damaged-but she didn’t throw away 40 years as a gun nut and abusive mother.
She struggled. Really hard. With addiction, with parenting. She owns one gun and it only brings her trouble (her boyfriend shoots LL Cool J by mistake).
In contrast, 2018 shows that trauma makes you a shakey mess. Who owns a lot of cool and rad guns. A lot of people with trauma hold it together. They do function. Sometimes in unhealthy ways.
H20 Laurie confronts her demons. And over comes them. When the finale comes, she acts like the babysitter we met in 1978, and she sends the kids away to safety. She’s selfless.
I suppose one is more realistic than the other. But it is a story about the boogeyman.
I do deeply love this film. It’s so brisk and fun. It’s like a fairytale where a loving mother destroys her demons, and wins the day.
And all the girlies know, Resurrection doesn’t count. Because the “paramedic” sits up like Dracula after flying thru the windshield in H20. So obviously not canon. Let me have this.
    LET ME HAVE THIS.

@@Xehanort10 How can you compare H5 and H6 (Producer's Cut) with abominations like Resurrection and Ends!?
H5 and H6 PC are a million times better movies than the other two and they have the main theme of the franchise Michael vs Loomis. It was never Laurie vs Michael. It was always Michael stalking and following his victims and Loomis doing the same with Michael. That's why H5 was the closest to the original in how the main theme goes and H6 PC gave us a conclusion to that theme and the timeline. Daniel Farrands and Akkard aren't at fault for the stupid and aweful TC/gore cut the Weinsteins wanted and that was later aired in cinemas.

@@valeriebreidenstein8362 5 had stupid shit like annoying Tina, the writers overexaggerating how crazy Loomis was, the 2 clown cops, Michael crying because Jamie called him uncle. 5 also started the Thorn stuff with the tattoo. And in the producer's cut of 6 Michael goes from evil incarnate to the puppet of a cult led by a guy who appeared in 1 scene in the original. Both cuts also have Paul Rudd making dumb faces that make it seem like Tommy Doyle finds Michael trying to kill him funny. Michael in the producer's cut being beaten by Tommy putting stones on the floor and saying "Samhain" was stupid too.

    • @valeriebreidenstein8362
      @valeriebreidenstein8362 Месяц назад

@@Xehanort10 H5 and H6 PC still are much better than Ends or Resurrection and I for once like the fact, that michael isn't a one dimensional pure evil killer with no personality whatsoever. We have tons of pure evil villains without a cause for their actions like Art or Freddy. Michael being a victim himself is what makes you feel for him and understand why he acts the way he does and why he doesn't kill everyone on sight, why he shows mercy and human emptions, even if they are rare, or why he sometimes hesitates like he's thinking "what am I doing here?" (like when Laurie called him by his name in H2 or when Jamie saw the real him, being the first in many years)
Also PC's ending isn't stupid. And Tommy even explained it before to Loomis. The rocks he lied out on the floor are runs of light that counter the dark power of the Thorn rune, activated by the word Samhain. It makes tons of sense that a celtic curse can only be broken by a ritual with similar powers.
And no other timeline made even closely sense with Michael's actions or why he seemingly just gets his eyes back between H2 and H20, of he is only human or how he was so strong in Kills, but so weak in ends.
The only version of Michael that really makes sense is COT Michael. He is badass, but still human inside, even if the Curse doesn't allow him to show it.

I always laughed at the fact it was Busta Rhymes that ended Myers, imagine telling someone 20 years before that was how the franchise would end, they would have called you crazy. I do like H20, as you said, it came out in the right moment of the scream era, plus it serves as the prequel to deep blue sea lol. Halloween will never end, so theirs always going to be ups and downs, it would be nice if we could just get at least one definitive trilogy, rather than them dropping the ball between sequels.

Back in April I finally marathoned the Thorne Trilogy and H20/Ressurection to finally catch up on the series (still have to watch the Zombie movies and finish the new trilogy). To me, I honestly like H20's more stripped-down approach. It's way too short and Michael's masks are the worst they've ever been in the series but I did enjoy the focus on Laurie's trauma as well as the final battle between her and Michael. As for Resurrection, aside from the first 20 minutes (which are just painful), it's a perfect example of a god-awful movie I enjoy watching. It's bad and has nothing to do with the rest of the franchise (strangely even less than Season of the Witch and that's non-canon) but it's just fun to see all these fools waste their time being on a reality TV show just for Michael to kill them. It's practically in a way a worse version of Freddy's Revenge.
    If I had to rank them so far its OG > 3 > H20 > 4 > 2 >>>>>>>>>> 6 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Resurection >>>>>>>>>>>>>> 5 (I just find 5 painfully boring).
Great video once again. I apologize for not commenting on recent videos; just life got in the way. But very much looking foward to more Halloween videos (both the franchise and the holiday)

While I'm personally not big on H3, I respect your opinion and am at least glad and happy you'd rank H20 marginally above 6 and 5 so low. 6 was the one that had the most troubled development, but 5 feels the most clunky and unsure of what it wants to be.

@@saltystick_99 You can feel that H5 was rushed, but it at least tried and H6 PC did a good job at filling the plot holes and new things (Thorn rune, man in black) that h5 just threw in. I honestly like the PC, you can see that Daniel Farrands cared for the movie and franchise. Sadly the Weinsteins (who were responsible for the terrible gory TC) and Chapelle (only there to get the deal with Miramax) didn't do it with passion and that's why the movie has some problems, but it's overall still a decent sequel (and my favorite in the franchise) and would surely be more liked by some fans, if we got H7 and H8, because H6 pC wasn't supposed to be the end, it was supposed to just be the introduction to the Curse-triology and H8 would have concluded it with a happy ending (nice for Michael after all the suffering he had to go through with the Curse).

I'd rank Pt 8 above Pt 2 and 3 but below all the other original movies & RZ H1 but above all the others. Pt. 8 while funny...was slick and stylish and MM was always hiding in the background he want out all in our faces like in H4 - H6 and like in most of the newer movies! The theme song was there too. MM acutely resembled the original Shape(minus the Busta Rhymes shiggity), but the film also offered something different. It felt like H2O, but just not as well executed. 🎃
I'd like to see a revamp of Pt. 4 with Laurie and her daughter in Pt. 4 and then a revamp of Pt 7 with her son and daughter together.

    EVERYONE PLEASE READ:
Before Jamie Lee Curtis signed her contract to star in H20, she was told...."you know that you Kill Michael in this film, you behead him...
....but how would you feel if we do a sequel and find out that it wasn't Michael Myers that died, it was someone else?"
She said, if I believe it's Michael that I killed, then I'm OK with that. Moustapha Akkad & Co. already knew, before they shot one frame of film for H20, that the guy Laurie beheaded wasn't Michael Myers. If you are in doubt, then watch the H20 commentary track on the bluray.

I saw Resurrection in the theater. It is the only time I have ever seen an audience, en masse, have no reaction to a horror movie. None. We were all incredulous, appalled, or both. Many of us gathered after it was over just to puzzle over the f*ckery. We were pretty evenly split as to why we were there: half for Michael, half for Laurie. And somehow this movie had ruined them both.

  • @dominicdipentino9548

I'm not sure what they were thinking, signing Rob Zombie on to make the reboot, and subsequent sequel. I realize they were going for something different, but turning Laurie from smart, pretty and likeable to a grungy, whiny, scuzzy crybaby and acted by a horrific actress. The sequel was way overly brutal, unnecessarily so.

Luckily we all can RETCON Halloween Resurrection all because: H20 was able to retcon 4-6, and Halloween 2018 retconned 2-H20, and Halloween 3 retconned it ALL. So to me H20 IS the ending. It’s where the story naturally does end.
But I’ll say I do really love Halloween 2018. So I do watch 1 2 H20 and H18. Halloween Kills I can’t stand. The town made NO sense without Halloween 2 taking place. Also Halloween Ends just wasn’t it.

  • @kingbash6466

I don't hate H2018 (in fact, it's probably the only one out of the Blumhouse trilogy I could consider good), but when I came back to H20, I felt that Laurie's story felt more realistic and grounded. She dealt with a traumatic experience, and because of that it leads to her having a dysfunctional relationship with her son. However, it's not because, "Laurie was having a Sarah Conner moment preparing both herself and her family for Michael Myers inevitable return with guns and weapons." It's because that night has forever changed her, and she projects that trauma onto her son like how most parents unintentionally do. She's super overbearing and protective because she doesn't want anything to happen to her only kid, and as a young teenager who wants to experience more in life, it causes an obvious rift in their relationship.

I do not get the hate for Rob Zombie's FIRST Halloween film. Now, he's been on the record that he did NOT want to make a sequel to his Halloween movie. But the suits and execs pushed it on him and he caved. So, Rob Zombie's Halloween 2 deserves all of the scrutiny it has formulated since its release. However, 2009's Halloween by Rob Zombie DOES NOT. Zombie gave us a different take on these characters that actually worked. Malcolm McDowell was terrific as Dr. Loomis. He wasn't trying to rip off the late Donald Pleasance in the role. McDowell instead made it his own, and for the feel and aesthetic of the film it worked. Michael seemed more fierce and imposing here and again, it worked. And there's one thing that director Rob Zombie did at the very end of the film, that no other director had ever done before in this franchise. Not even the great John Carpenter. In Rob Zombie's 2009 Halloween in the climax of the film Laurie is trying to hold it together while she's fighting a 6'5 Michael Myers for her life. Michael uses his size and strength to push Laurie through an upstairs patio and into the front lawn of the house. Michael is unconscious for a few minutes, and Laurie sees Dr. Loomis' gun a few feet away from her. She grabs the revolver, climbs on top of Michael points the gun at his lower jaw and .... click, click, click. Laurie continues to click the gun looking at Michael with distain and hate when Michael wakes up and grabs the gun, but before he can take the gun from Laurie..... BOOM!! Laurie finally fires the last bullet in the gun's cylinder and blows Michael's head off. You see a pool of blood splash her face, while she screams in agony and you hear sirens in the background getting closer and closer. Revealing the end credits.
Now, no other Halloween in the entire series, canon or not canon has EVER done that. Not even H20 had the balls to kill off Michael Myers for good. Not even the super OVERRATED David Gordon Green trilogy gave us such a satisfying conclusion. And that guy had THREE films to do so.
Look, the 1978 original will always be the mountain top. No argument there. But to give credit where credit's due, Rob Zombie's first Halloween was a criminally underrated horror film. That is better than most of the other films in the Halloween series. And as a one and done Halloween film, Rob Zombie's vision goes further than most of the other entries. My two cents.
