- Pianist: Yundi Li plays Liszt's piano reduction of Verdi's "Rigoletto" Opera Fantasy, an Oriental piece by composer Wang titled "Sunflower" and finally another Liszt, the 3rd Etude based on a variation of a theme of Paganini, "La Campanella" in B minor S. 141.
Composed 1838, revised 1851. Liszt was 27 when he composed this piece.

His version of Rigoletto is unbelievable. Never heard such a unique interpretation.

It's hard not to watch Yundi's hands without wondering how he can maintain these finger positions and not get some kind of cramp or spasm! He is a joy to listen to, not because of his flawless technique, but because he can inject such playfulness and even flirtation in his playing. He's also a pleasure to watch, especially when he manages to look like an angel. A rare talent indeed!
There are lots of good piano players, but there are few that can make the music on that piece of paper sing again. Yundi Li is one of these rare musicians who can actually make every second of a piece interesting to listen to. Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt etc are brilliant composers, but if there aren’t any players who can actually make the music come alive again, those urtexts are just silent notes.
I agree with your opinion on his playfulness: many players seem to think that performing on the piano needs to be 100% serious with no room for joy and excitement. It shouldn’t be a test: it should be a celebration.
The clarity of Yundi's playing always has me dropping everything else to stop and listen. There's a kind of delicate elegance that is often forgone in the search of virtuosity, I think, and it gives such a refreshing take on showcase pieces like Rigoletto and La Campanella. Sunflower, I do not wish to comment much on, as it's one of those melodies I grew up to. I can't make any objective observations on it, but Yundi really just gives it new life in my books.
One of his reasons he is a genius is he is never out of sync even when playing very fast runs. 64th notes in presto All have the same value in speed, never sloppy. He makes the piano sing and plays note perfect with great dynamics and musianship. His fault is his nerves, if he makes a mistake, the rest of the recital/concert will be a mess.
One of the best interpretations of Liszt's Rigoletto Paraphrase I've ever heard. Wonderful.

I heard Yundi started playing the piano at a relatively late age compared to his cohorts, and that makes him all the more commendable. The fact that he has few years less experience yet is still able to play arguably better than most pianists is astonishing
I normally don't like some of his performances but you gotta admit that these three are just FANTASTIC.

Magnificent. His performance of La Campanella is wonderful. So many pianists rush it and make it a big mess of notes. His playing is quick in the right places, but measured, deliberate and surprisingly emotional throughout. Yundi Li has become one of my favourite pianists because he is just so completely musical.

Liszt composed the Rigoletto piece to be near impossible to play. I don't think anyone during Liszt's time could play the Rigoletto transcription except Liszt.

Yundi...to me you are the number one, on the top of them all. I just wish more and more Chinese pianists will make you as their idol and example.
Yundi Li has, in my humble opinion, one of the best versions of all 3 songs played here. I don't know why people argue who's better than who; if they're all good, what's the difference? And since some people are going to be frowned upon, don't mention them. Relax and enjoy the music.

One of the best pianists of our time I respect his skill and his race, it has nothing to do with skill or appriciation you can be Asian, Russion, German or French but the true love of the arts isn't about race its about specific personalities Yundi is an icon if you ask me.
