This is a great overview on a wonderful little lens. One thing that bothered me is that you claim an f/1.4 on crop sensor is really f/1.8 or f/2. It's a bit misleading for those that might not understand what I assume you're referring to. In terms of light gathering capability, an f/1.4 is an f/1.4, give or take minor variations between lens samples or manufacturers. Where this aperture equivalence does come into play is in depth of field. A full-frame lens will always be capable of a narrower depth of field than its equivalent crop lens at the same aperture - but that's just because the equivalent lens is actually a shorter focal length. The other variable worth mentioning is high ISO performance. Since a Fuji would have a greater pixel density, you'll see more noise than a full-frame shot with the same settings. But light gathering capability of the lens is still still essentially the same between each.
You're right, I should have been more clear about this and I was indeed referring to the depth of field rather than the light gathering capability itself. I am sorry about this and thank you for pointing it out so that other viewers can also read it and understand what I meant thus not getting too confused. Otherwise, I thank you very much for watching and have fun shooting:-)
Great review! I'm going to buy this lens (mainly for low light street photography and some close-up work), so it is very useful to see some real world experience.
Thank you for the compliment and for watching! Really appreciated and yes, this lens is really really good for low light street photography as well as very discrete, so it will definitely will work in your favour. Congratulations on your decision, I wish you a great time and have fun shooting!:-)
Thank you for the informative video, David! Your photos are just beautiful; can I ask what editing software/presets/simulations you use? Specifically the shots from 5:30 through 6:10 mins.
Ohh, I just use Lightroom and just edit according to my mood 😅😅 I know it doesn’t help a lot but that’s really how I edit 😅😅 But thank you for watching and for the compliment! ☺️☺️
It is not my favorite lens but it is a member of my favorite Fuji 3-lens kit: 16mm f/1.4 23mm f/1.4 56mm f/1.2 With these three lenses, I am able to capture 80% of the images I need.
Thanks for the review. I'm planning to buy the lens to take movies. I wonder if the noise created by auto focusing motor is too big. Can you recommend this lens for the purpose? I mainly use outdoors to take movies of scenery.
It's not that noisy, you will notice it but not to the point that your microphone will unless if you are filming indoor (super silent) and using the internal mic. Otherwise, your mic will never really pic up. It's a great lens to use and if you are planning to use the continuous AF, this lens is more accurate than many other continuous AF compare to many other Fuji lenses.
@@DavidCuhls Thanx for your reply. I appreciate it. Accuracy of continuous AF is also one of the important factors to me. Thinking of its brightness, this lens suits me. I will use it with external microphone!
Thank you for the compliment but I that it's still best if you have a chance to try it, do try it first because this focal length is not really a preferred fixed focal length for many~~ That being said, if you like the focal length, you don't need to worry about the image quality because it's great. I wish you a great time and have fun shooting! :-)
Thank you for your compliment but those pictures where taken with different lenses as I was not really invested in the Fuji system yet at the time of taking those images... But you can replicate the look with this lens too actually :-)
Thank for sharing and enjoy your new camera setup! I am sure you will love it and will create stunning results with it as well! Stay safe and have a great:-)
Would you use this on a night urban set up? How narrow of an aperture would be your limit when hand holding the camera assuming both camera and lens are non-IS? Thanks!
I would use it in the night urban set up, of course! It's a great performer in lowlight but how narrow the aperture I would limit really depends on the condition. If I am shooting portrait, usually between 1.4 - 1.6 but otherwise I would not go beyond f/4.0 hand held. But all of this also depends on the ISO settings, shutter speed and more... sometimes I cannot go higher than f/2.0 to get stable results... So it really depends on the situations and the other settings limitations in the situation...
Love this! Looking at my 16 lens... it’s an awkward powerful baby. Shame I couldn’t use it much yet because of miss corona lol. But nice video and great colors on these pics :)
Thank you for the compliment!:-) I do shoot with the XF 35mm f/2.0, XF 55-200mm, XC 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6, XF 60mm f/2.4 macro lens. However, the lens that stays on my Fuji cameras 90 - 95% of the time is this XF 16mm f/1.4 :-)
@@DavidCuhls Thanks for the reply. Interesting to see how there are so many different preferences when it comes to preference of focal length. Anyways, I hope you continue to make videos like this and your channel continues to grow.
Yeah, everyone will have their own preferences in choosing their equipments to achieve what they want to shoot. Thank you so much for your kind words and I will do my best to continue to improve and produce more content for sure. I wish you a great time and have fun shooting!:-)
I don't own that lens but from what I can see and experience, I think that it is a very nice lens if you like the focal range, it is also sharp and focuses decently. I like the fact that it is 1.4 but I don't like that it is not weather sealed though...
Haha, I would almost agree with that if lenses like the 8-16mm and 56mm 1.2 wasn't around. Of course, they are two different lenses but I think that those two lenses, in my opinion, are also some of the best Fuji lenses out there. :-)
You can definitely use it for landscape photography. That being said, the 10-24 will be able to give you more flexibility on the field if you are not sure weather you can commit to just one focal length... But if you can get used to the 16mm like I did, then you can definitely shoot landscape with it. Honestly, I just bought the 10-24mm yesterday and only to figure out that I already got used to the 16mm 1.4 that I naturally always naturally turn the lens to 16mm focal length and only to realise that after taking a few pictures already~~
The word 'Funny' 'Awkward' etc associated with 24 mm lens. I wonder loud why the camera lens manufacturers are not listening to this and still repeatedly make the 24mm in prime and zoom formats! Does the picture look funny when shot with a 24mm lens? Will I appear an idiot if I expose that I am shooting with a 24mm? I have been doing that , and yes, now I recollect the giggle among the community when they looked for my exif. Perhaps , 24mm is an aberration-- I am an ignoramus, can someone kindly throw some info in on this matter, my idiocy notwithstanding. Thank you all.
I think that this question really depends on who is saying it than a statement that it is "weird" and/or "awkward"... In my opinion, a 24mm is a very nice focal length to be at when shooting wide because it's a sweet spot before things can look a little too distorted... That said, what I mean by "weird" (as also mentioned several times in the video) is it's not usually your first lens to reach out to when you are doing most of your shoots and/or traveling somewhere new. That said, if you can make it work and if you can get use to it, you will be able to produce some really great results with this focal length, especially with that depth of field of 1.4... Now, whether if you will find it practical, good, weird, awkward, etc. is really up to you and your way of shooting (not other users)... If you like it, then use it, no need think about what other users are saying about the lens because at the end of the day it's your shot and you are the one who have to be happy with it... I am deeply sorry if what I said in the video might offended you at some point but please don't take it personally as this is only my thought videos based on the way I shoot... I only create this video in case it might help some people... That's all... I thank you very much for watching, I wish you a great time, stay safe and have fun shooting

talking about focus, this video is so blury..
