This is *hands down* my fav Fuji lens. After just a few days of shooting with it, I sold the 10-24mm because I knew this one would spend far more time on my camera. The close focusing distance combined with f1.4 opens up so much room for creativity.
Honestly been waiting for this one. It’s always such an inspiring and refreshing experience to watch you talk about gear and imagery with so much care. Bought my xt3 with the 16mm 1.4 a year ago and this kind of video just reminds me of the excitement of something new, which 2020 kinda took away from us. Excellent as usual :)

Damn bro. I can’t even imagine how many hours of filming and editing go into your RUclips videos! Mad kudos! Fantastic cinematic review. Always a pleasure to watch. ✌🏽
The only Fuji camera I am planning to buy is the X100F or V, I just stick to shoot film. However I do enjoy watching your videos immensely for the visual content. You are so good at identifying a location and light and turning it into a cinematic scene. Great stuff.
This video could not have been presented at a better time for me. I have just ordered a DJI gimbal and have been researching as much as possible about manually focussing lenses to use on the gimbal. For my office use, talking to head type scenario I determined that 16mm is the right field of view for my needs, but the 8 to 16mm is only F2.8 and I was looking for something faster. Everything that you presented in this video is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much for the work and effort you put into producing this video!
Yes, this was one of my favorite Fuji lenses, when I shot with that system. Even saved me on a paid shoot, that had horible low light, with black ceilings, didn't know what I was going to do; but, this lens allowed me to get some amazing shots!!
You are totally right about the combination of the wide angle focal length, 2.35:1 aspect ratio and colour grade/edit of these photos creating a cinematic feel. Your images are beautiful, I can very easily imagine them being translated into a moving image/film medium. Keep up the great work!
I am so happy. I've been travelling around Asia with my 23mm F2 for a few years, but I had to take a break because of COVID. Now I am slowly getting ready to leave again, and I always felt this lens is the next step for me since I am doing people, travel and documentary and I wanted a wider field of view. I bought the 16mm F1.4 like 10 minutes ago and after seeing your video I am even more pumped. Great video man!
Love it! I think this will be my next lens after I graduate from my XC 35 mm. I love how prime lens really challenges the photographer to strategize positioning to tell a story with the picture.
Very nice "Blade Runner" look, as always... I was at a buying webpage watching this very same lens and caressing the "BUY" button. Coincidence? I think not!
Your videos are art, not in the market for a lot of the things you review but they are inspiring and I learn a lot (after thinking I know everything about photography) and they are just so visually pleasing.
Dude, wtf is this production quality! It's like you're in a spaceship and whole thing looks like a movie. Literally the only channel I'm clicking the bell for.
@@GxAce I'm just sitting here watching your videos. The way you shoot your lenses among weird machines, it makes me feel like you live in a janky post apocalyptic claustrophobic spaceship. Really amazing how you've created this whole unique vibe and look. I expected to see millions of subs but nope. You need one viral video and that will happen for sure. Finally realized your face cam shot makes it look like you're in some Star Wars movie, your hoodie and jacket helps with that a lot too.
I was thinking about this lens for like 1 month now. I got an XT3 with the 35mm f2 but it just isn't wide enough for the photography i want to do. This video was just beautiful and had such a great mood. You've convinced me to pick this up when I can.
I think its hard to call this lens under rated, given the glowing reviews it gets, but its versatility cannot be stated enough. I was never one for shooting wide, but this lens is getting me out of that habit and is making it very enjoyable to get wider shots. The close focus also means I can get away with not carrying my 80mm macro all of the time. Ps. Quality content as usual. You could probably start doing videos on kitchen utensils and I would still tune in. Also absolutely love the preset pack!
Yeah I feel the close focus is really what makes this lens really special, and until mirrorless, there weren't many lenses for APSC that were this wide and this fast. Thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoy the pack! You can look forward to my Microplane Cheese grater review any day now!
Funnily enough I've been looking at getting a wide angle lens for my XT3 and was initially torn between the two 18mm ones, and then this video resurfaced into my recommendations - this lens splits the difference in terms of price AND is a faster lens than the cheaper 18mm, so I'm going to have to do some more thinking! Yours is easily my favourite "camera channel" on RUclips, really love the effort and style that goes into your videos!
@@GxAce definitely 🙂 your video on the X-T3 was one of the motivating factors for me to switch to Fujifilm. I don't have the 16mm yet, but I will soon get it, when possible. From everything I've seen and heard, it seems to be that flexible lens you're describing. The Samyang 12mm f2 lens is my only wide angle option right now, and it's a bit too wide for more casual shooting. I have a feeling that the 16mm will be perfect for the wide angle casual and documentary shooting. Though I have to say that the 18mm f1.4 to come is make me consider holding out a bit, just to see if that would be a better option for me.
I'm a Sony shooter, but I love my 16mm f/1.4 Sigma for all the reasons you said, it's just an amazing focal length that really challenges you to think outside the box. Amazing video man, I'm always so happy to see new content from your channel.
Just wow. Your content and style is so great. The shot at 6:35 is my favorite. Just went to the cabinet and grabbed the 16. I think when it makes sense for me to travel again I’ll be rocking the 16, 35 1.4 and 90 with the T4. Thought I might just do the 16-55 but sometimes I forget what a marvel the 16 1.4 is. Thanks for the video.
If you want a smaller 16mm, the Fuji 16mm f/2.8 is lovely. I have that lens and enjoy using it so much. Though the f/1.4 would be even better if you don't mind the larger size.
Love my Sigma 16mm 1.4 on Sony. Didn't really take it outside to take pictures yet, since I thought it's too wide (I only use it for talking head shots). Now that I saw your pictures I'll definitely do it though. Thanks for the inspiration!
That's awesome! I'm glad I could give you some inspiration! It really is a fun way to shoot, especially if you like giving things a bit of a movie feel :) Thanks for watching!
You're right about the 16/24 mm telling a story. I have the EF 24mm 1.4 from Canon and it's the only dslr lens that I still own for my mirrorless system. I really hope they will rebuild it for mirrorless sometime soon.
Just picked up a pristine used one today.. my first lens to go on my Xt5 for my foray back into photography since moving to Thailand. Nice review and perspective on this lens..
Just found your channel, started with the Zeiss 32mm video (big Fujifilm 35mm f/1.4 fan here but you entertained me with your presentation) and now this. I love my 16mm f/1.4 and agree with everything that you said here. I'd just like to add more detail to the manual focus clutch system that I use often. Besides simply focusing, pulling the clutch ring back also reveals a set of DOF scales which allows you to set either zone or hyperfocal distances (for specific apertures) all while looking down at the lens. This being a wide-angle lens the strength for landscapes and cityscapes is enhanced by this feature... no guessing or getting out some DOF calculator, just stop down and move the infinity mark to the aperture in use then look at the same aperture on the other side of the scale to see if it covers your needed near-range.
Beautiful pics from this lens -- and thank you for traveling back in time to tell us! Looks like the lens will hold up extremely well in the years to come.. how awesome you located one in top condition!
I really do like the 16mm lens line with Fuji. I'm just a huge fan of 24mm/35mm focal lengths. I have the 16mm 2.8 one, but I would love to get to that 1.4 aperture for night shoots.
Your videos are so different from any other reviews! Really like this retro sci-fi style, it reminded me original Alian movie. Keep it up! You definitely deserve more views!
Love this lens for all the same reasons. It’s my go to for covering local BLM protests without the need for a second lens. The cinematic aspects of it, the depth of field and wider fov, also gives much more of an opportunity to build a strong emotional attachment to the subject by shooting low and looking up. But it’s the cloudy overcast days that make this lens absolutely come alive in my book
I love 16mm in aps-c more than 18mm. With the former the lines of perspective just flows and is more immersive. Although it seems most persons prefer 18mm. (BTW, thanks for the video, they are short works of art nwn) your presets would work in affinity photo?
Beautiful video with fantastic atmosphere like always! I very much agree that it's a good focal length for doing all kinds of stuff. My 16 2.8 is my designated tourism lens which I specifically got to document museums (I worked in making installations for museums so I always look for inspiration when travelling). To my big surprise I ended up loving not only the photos of museums and such but everything from street scenes, group shouts to even a few portraits (yes, at 2.8!). And since you're the one who inspired me to got a Pro Mist filter. I've been using one a bit the last few days and I really like the results. Definitely gives me a part of what I like when I shoot film.
Thanks for watching! It's funny that you mention museums because I actually had a section in the video talking about how this lens could go from taking awesome cinematic portraits to just taking a photo of a cool detail of a museum exhibit to show your family later. That's great to hear! I'm glad you picked up a diffusion filter and are enjoying it!
I agree with all the loving comments 🥰. Your style is amazing and so inspiring. Been waiting for more content from you and here it is ❤️ Will definitely look into your luts. I’m also very curious as to how you expose and grade your videos. I’m too a sucker for sci-fi look. I which you all the best my friend , and thank you 🙏
@@GxAce immensely looking forward to that. If you find there is a demand for your content maybe a Patreon account or anything alike could be an option, given that you actually have time for RUclips 😅. 🙏❤️
@@GxAce I'm still waiting on that Zeiss 35mm (X-mount) lens review. I have zero interest in the lens*, I just know it'll be an awesome video. * I do have genuine interest in what you think of it though, always interesting to see why photographers prefer the kit they do.
You're intros are the best I've EVER seen. Keep it up! Also, that image of the flag through the fence is very powerful. Keep that one for your future book!
Got this lens back in 2015 and have no regrets. The the 56mm 1.2 is also a fav (even tho not WR). Odd that Fuji is no longer a camera company. Their main source of revenue is healthcare and semiconductors. I really hope they continue to develop cameras and lenses. I have collected nearly every x-mount lens made over the years. The new CEO Goto (interesting name) says “we won’t sell the business” which is good but also says something about its current state of volatility.
Damn, these shots are mythically good. I always hear about the 16mm being so good for context, but I have never seen it done so right. I could never do this myself. I find I'm never close enough to anything to fill the frame with intentionality. To be fair, I think it works better in densely architectured spaces, but still, widest I could make work is an 18, and only really somewhere like Tokyo or for landscapes. I am in awe, my dude. You are a phenomenon with this glass. ✌️
Wow, thank you for that amazing comment! Not sure if I deserve such high praise but I'll take it :) 18mm is really great too! I'm pretty excited for the new version.
@@GxAce No worries, champ. Tbh I'd watch a review of your favourite photos taken. Your eye for composition is super solid. How do you feel about the 2:1 aspect ratio? I'm in two minds about the mark ii versions. I do want faster more reliable and WR glass, but the colour rendition changes a little. I loved the rust reds of the old 27f2.8 and the 18f2 has these super strong greens and blues which remind me of Jurassic Park. I wish they could keep the glass' character and still update the housing and mechanism.
Casey, I'm a new fan here and recently subscribed because your videos and photography are unbelievable. Truly masterful. I want to take my photography further because of content like yours - where and how did you learn to shoot like this? Thank you for these videos! They are magnificent!
Have to say you are different than other gear reviewers in a way that you take pretty stunning pictures. Other gear reviewers usually take hell bad photos.
Sigh. First world problem. Once upon a time, I had this lens and there's no denying it was frightfully fast in manual mode. Just bang, bang, bang - loved that focus ring and there's no denying that on more than a few occasions with selected sharpened menu settings. It was beyond sharp, I'm talking about a city vista on a hilltop and yet still, almost making out individual tree branch detail even though the actual trees themselves were more than 50 metres away. Nutty good lens..
This is the only lens i have for my Fuji xpro2 so far. It´s really a fantastic lens! (and i have been doing photography since 2006) I sometimes feel i need one one more lens for some portraits. Looking at the 50mm f2. WR.
Excellent review and discussion of the benefits and cons of this lens. Love the video, grabbing one shortly to complement my xt2 for weather proof street and coastal photography. Love the points you made, and the performance, character and weather sealing outweigh the size issues for me. Definitely would love to pop it on an xpro 2 someday though!
Since we're on full lockdown I will enjoy the life out of this! (when I'm allowed to make money again I should consider getting maybe second hand X-T2/3)
I hope it helps keep you entertained during these weird times! All of these photos were taken before COVID so it makes me wish for those times again too!
ok dude you need to do a video about how you produce your videos. Like how do you do your audio production? Some kind of industry-standard sound library or do you record your own sound effects? Also how do set up your product shots? Do you create the visuals on the screens in the background yourself? What program is used to make them? And do you just buy computer scrap at markets in order to use them as backdrop?
Great video. You have me really intrigued on the 24mm idea. I’ve pretty much constantly shot with the 56mm which I love but I’m thinking about trying something wider.

I which you all the best my friend , and thank you 🙏
Thank you so much! I am planning to do a video soon-ish about my grading!
@@GxAce immensely looking forward to that. If you find there is a demand for your content maybe a Patreon account or anything alike could be an option, given that you actually have time for RUclips 😅.
🙏❤️
best reviews on RUclips as always! and completely agree on the 16mm f/1.4, I think I could shoot nearly anything on this lens
Thank you so much!! It really is an amazing prime lens!
Dude has no idea how religiously we are waiting for his new video
Apparently I don't hahah. Thank you so much for your support! Hopefully the frequency of videos will increase soon ;)
@@GxAce Is there anything else like the Osborne ad coming up? Another cool thing I liked about the whole thing.
Thank you very much! I will definitely add that one into a book if I ever make one hahah.
2:35:1 gang where you at? Outstanding quality video and the photos! The photos where a blast. Loved the street vendor shoots!
Thanks! I like to call myself an Anamorphile ;)
This is Indie Blade Runner, art direction better than most Hollywood films. Excellent review as usual. Keep up the good work bro!
Wow, thanks!
Fuji has always made great lenses.
Wonderful wide angle presentation! You really show us the awesome movie examples! Thanks!
The entry city shot at the beginning...💥👍🏻
Thank you thank you thank you for not doing "5 things I like and 5 I don't".
Man, you are so slick, fantastic graphics, well done matey.
My guy is back! Thanks for the review!
And so are you! Thanks for the comment my friend!
This is the first lens I'm getting for my fuji. I'll probably wait for the XH2 though.
It's a great choice ;)
Just so much effort gone into this video. Beautiful aesthetic hahaa!!! You've made up my mind!
Nutty good lens..
always a pleasure to watch!
Thanks so much!
This is the only lens i have for my Fuji xpro2 so far. It´s really a fantastic lens! (and i have been doing photography since 2006) I sometimes feel i need one one more lens for some portraits. Looking at the 50mm f2. WR.
Good choice! Yeah having something on the longer end could compliment this lens well!
That intro is just... wow!
Glad you enjoyed!
VIBES: UNREAL
QUALITY: UNREAL
Thanks!!
Ayyyy, been waiting for this!
Hope you enjoy!
Since we're on full lockdown I will enjoy the life out of this! (when I'm allowed to make money again I should consider getting maybe second hand X-T2/3)
I hope it helps keep you entertained during these weird times! All of these photos were taken before COVID so it makes me wish for those times again too!
Full lockdown? Where? England?
@@da009999 I wish, Czech republic
ok dude you need to do a video about how you produce your videos. Like how do you do your audio production? Some kind of industry-standard sound library or do you record your own sound effects? Also how do set up your product shots? Do you create the visuals on the screens in the background yourself? What program is used to make them? And do you just buy computer scrap at markets in order to use them as backdrop?
I will for sure at some point. I love finding tech junk at estate sales and surplus stores!
The whole video has beautiful shots but I love the car one at 5:20 - great job
Banger as always!
Appreciate it!
I like this for street because you can get very close to people and slightly turn away and they don’t know they’re in the shot.
Great video. You have me really intrigued on the 24mm idea. I’ve pretty much constantly shot with the 56mm which I love but I’m thinking about trying something wider.
Really like the photos! And this lens seams really cool. Never used such a wide lens, but I kinda want to try it something like this.
Very well done my friend, great video review. Thank you!! Very helpful, and super fun to watch!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love every video you make!
Thank you so much for the support!
