Ian looks less like a battle hardened soldier and more like your dad at 1 in the morning on at a New Year’s party after consuming a couple of box wines.
Watch your mouth young man, if a dad had made it to 1am in the morning at a New Year’s Eve party after consuming a couple of boxes of wine, he IS a battle hardened soldier.
For reference, the Catachans don't sound Australian in the audiobook, but they do all sound a bit like Jason Statham, and I think that comes in a close second.
Gabriel Seth is also Jason Statham. I don't understand why anyone would think they were Aussies, everyone in the 40k galaxy is from various parts of the British Isles.
The dynamic of Ian being an old jaded 40k fan and Mira a new fan who still has hope in her eyes but slowly losing it everytime she learns about the grimdarkness of 40k is just fantastic.
two other books in this "series" of Modern Astra Militarum books, post cadia, also very worth a read is; Steel Tread by Andy Clark and Longshot by Rob Young
I lived this whole book. Hayward does such good work with detailed imagery that dosent feel tedious. She's able to give such deep detail about a scene, especially in a massive battle, with surprisingly little space needed. All of her characters feel so unique too, and they all got just the right amount of time focused on each of them to feel fleshed out The ending of this book felt a little... unconcluded for the characters. SPOILER START!! --- Also, Khan counting her remaining cheroots throughout the book would've made a really good 'countdown' to her dying, and I was expecting it for almost the whole time reading. It almost made me disappointed that she lived (as much as I love her character) when she had none left. Feels like a missed opportunity to give the ending more emotion if this is a one-off book. ---- SPOILER END!!
Just finished the book, it was so freaking good! I was rooting for every single character in the squad. The relationships were unexpected in a book like this but I adored them as well :) I don't think I've ever cared so much about a tech adept. "I will see you again..." goosebumps. Praise the Omnissiah.
I've been very excited for this because I bought the audiobook after your enthusiastic interview with Victoria Haywood. The book was great and I loved it. Very excited to hear your thoughts on it! 😊
SporeQuest is of course a forthcoming GW release in which four different spores descend into a dungeon to infect Orcs, Goblins, Undead and Gargoyles with athlete's foot in pursuit of ancient magical treasures.
Its been the Cat-a-chan for me too. Regional variations in accent, I suppose. 40K is one of those settings that really needs a pronunciation guide in the back of every book. One look at the faff on pronouncing ROBOUTE GUILLIMAN. Never mind any of the harder ones.
My introduction to warhammer was driving a paper mache cow halfway across america in college and my buddy whod just got his license two weeks before infodumping the history of the imperium and how dark eldar work the entire time we were in utah. This has the same energy as that friend and its only because of the "costumes".
Loved the reference to The Doors' "The End" by Mira. I can't hear that song without thinking of the crazier parts of "Apocalypse Now" and given the discretion of "Deathworlder" this seems to be very much a parallel of that madness at points. Looking forward to reading this one.
I absolutely loved the last quarter of the book. I loved character interactions throughout, I am just not a fan of action in general and fighting specifically
Warhammer Crime! Yay! I'm looking forward to hearing both your reactions to Bloodlines by Chris Wraight. It's an incredible book, but has some bits Mira might not be a fan of...
The very few sparks of romance in 40k have always been super compelling to me, maybe because ive never actually read "real" romance in books, but it really ads a lot if drama to the universe and a lot of stakes.
this book was amazing to me, I was so happy by how brutal and well written it was. And this is from someone that really doesn't like Tyranid stories, I thin k this and Devastation of Baal are the ones I like.
I did read it first week it was out, great frikking book, almost as good as the two new kreig books. harruto was my fav character in the book. And no Australians in the audio book😂
I remember saying Cata-CHAN when I got into 40k during the end of 4th / start of 5th ed. Maybe Ian is just doing that thing old people do where they say '5 years ago' but what they actually mean is '15 years ago'. ..fuck knows I do that alot.
Mira is kind of rocking the Axel Rose look here. "ka-TA-chan" is fairly typical of how British English handles three syllable words; "KAT-a-chan" is fairly typical of how American and Canadian English handles three syllable words. So presumably the change in official pronunciation has to do with the Americans.
You should read Day of ascension by Adrian Tchaikovski. The Protagonist is working for a Genestealer cult and I I really liked it. Adrian Tchaikovski is a really good writer, and while this book is hardly his best, I think its quality as a tie-in novel stands out. His space opera series beginning with Shards of earth has definite inspiration from the Warhammer universe, and has it's own Grimdark elements. Though I dare say they are probably a lot better than any Warhammer tie-in. His novel Children of time won the Arthur C Clarke award.
Ian: I’m hoping for Warhammer romance! Me: From the moment I understood the lack of romance, it vexed me. I craved the light and joy of love. I hoped for the purity of confessed feelings. Your kind cling to your hope as if it will not betray and abandon you. One day the naïve hope you call Warhammer romance will wither and you will beg my kind to save you. *But I am already saved. For I ship Inquisitor Greyfax and Saint Celestine.”* 🤣 As fun as it is to joke about, In all honesty, I think that would be cute, given how suspicious Greyfax is at their first encounter. Granted, I have not read or listened to their later interactions, so I have no idea if there’s any validity to the supposed romantic tension between them parts of the fandom express. I’m okay with letting the real shippers have it. Especially if it makes Celestines life worse, since it gives her more to lose! Gotta keep it grimdark if she’s going to be respawning all over the galaxy. Celestine partially forgetting her mortal girlfriend and getting killed every time they find each other could be a whole extra level of torment, or maybe I’m just evil? 🤔
Definitely would not have picked this one up if it hadn’t been for your interview, but I am definitely glad that I did. I described this book as feeling like if they took Arnold Schwarzenegger and crew from Predator, dropped them into Apocalypse Now, and released the xenomorphs. Also, I am actually writing a wh40k romance novel that I hope to be able to pitch to Black Library.
"Rainer Stuhl" might very well be a word play; "Reiner Alkohol" is a sound-alike to German for "pure alcohol". And Stuhl means both chair as well as stool. So him ranking high on the bastard scale as a character named "pure stool or sh!t" is no surprise to me, tbh. XD
Everyone in my local GW and everyone I encountered at warhammer world at the winter wars was calling it cata-CHANS rather than your ca-TAH-chuns as far back as 2003. So at least in some circles it's probably always been that.
Stone the crows maaaate!! Eff me sideways!! @miramanga your first Aussie impression was pretty good broad ocker accent similar to 1980s Paul Hogan… 🍺🍺 I mean pretty hard to get right, modern day Aussie accent is kinda close to a cockney accent really…I mean who is the equivalent Aussie on UK tv… Adam Hills? Does anyone watch TV these days idunno. Cheers from Melbourne AUS. Oh yeah - Klingon opera hands down!!!
How can one not care about spoilers?? What about mystery? Intrigue? Surprises? That is very silly :P I suppose it takes all types to make the Imperium turn, as they (will) say!
2:58 y'all call those vests!? A-shirts here, or tank tops (they used to be called wife beaters but thats outrageously offensive, and tank tops are usually an actual shirt type thing. A-shirts are the undershirt version).
The nightlord trilogy has a full on romance plot in it! its a great book and WAY too much for Mira but its awesome to have a romance in the story of the chaos corrupted torturers.
Ian looks less like a battle hardened soldier and more like your dad at 1 in the morning on at a New Year’s party after consuming a couple of box wines.
i was thinking Shaun of the Dead....
Since this episode is about Australians call box wine but its ture name, goon
@@GangstaMonkey214 Goon, the drink of the gods

Shaun of the dead vibes
Ian is rocking the "Drunken Japanese salary man at 2 am" look.
🤣
Karaoke Time
# I did it MYYYYYY WWAAAAYYYY!!!
I think I saw Ian in Yakuza 0 lol
apparently, the reason they stereotypically have ties on their heads is because they tried to pull them off but have up partway through
For reference, the Catachans don't sound Australian in the audiobook, but they do all sound a bit like Jason Statham, and I think that comes in a close second.
Gabriel Seth is also Jason Statham. I don't understand why anyone would think they were Aussies, everyone in the 40k galaxy is from various parts of the British Isles.
@steweygrrr I mean technically so are most Australians haha
Sleeveless undershirts with a scarf and tie around your respective heads... "We're legitimate!"
I love y'all. *So* much.
Come for the books, stay for Mira's gun-show
Of all the warhammer novels I've read I think this one would make for the best movie
The dynamic of Ian being an old jaded 40k fan and Mira a new fan who still has hope in her eyes but slowly losing it everytime she learns about the grimdarkness of 40k is just fantastic.
3:45, almost disappointed you didn't call it a "spore-gasbord" ^^
two other books in this "series" of Modern Astra Militarum books, post cadia, also very worth a read is; Steel Tread by Andy Clark and Longshot by Rob Young
Medieval monks: alms for the poor.
Genestealer cultists: arms for the poor.
Slaanesh cultist: More Arms for this Whore
I now just want a Matt Berry Warhammer book. "Hi, Roboute Guilliman, it's the Emperor can you hear me?" "YES, I can hear you Emperor of Mankind".
Ultimate Bad Asses; the biggest bad asses since the fourth Badass War.
The Catachan Halfarses are now a lacklustre unit in the 40k Universe.
First half of this book is ALIENS, the second part is ANNIHILATION.
Just want to tell you that I enjoy your book reviews and interviews very much. I often listen multiple times.
For the last novel of the HH you will have to cosplay in full foam spacemarine costumes.😂
Mira as Horus and Ian as the emperor obvs ;)
Mira as a „saved“ Fulgrim
It's such a good book; and you two remain the most adorable 40K book reviewers around. Never change!

Why does the intro beat always slap so hard
I've been very excited for this because I bought the audiobook after your enthusiastic interview with Victoria Haywood. The book was great and I loved it. Very excited to hear your thoughts on it! 😊
You two should review "Storm of Iron" a Iron Warriors book.
I'd also recommend the Soul Drinker's omnibus which is a pretty awesome story.
SporeQuest is of course a forthcoming GW release in which four different spores descend into a dungeon to infect Orcs, Goblins, Undead and Gargoyles with athlete's foot in pursuit of ancient magical treasures.
If you want Warhammer romance read the old Vampire Genevieve books with her and Detlef Sierck. (Always wanted a Constant Drachenfels model)
Khan in the Audiobook is a totally jaded and dis-interested South-Londoner who speaks slowly and wearily.
Perfect IMO.
As a South Londoner, checks out.
hands down, your channel has become one of my favorite 40k lore channels
As an Australian I've heard worse Australian accents, but like tyranid spores it is slowly killing me
Yes! This review definitely going to help me decompress from shitty work day. Many thanks!!!
I've always known them a Cat-a-chan, since the first Codex.

Same. Its like I've never understood people who pronounce Abaddon as Abaddon. This is hard.
Oh my god those outfits... stunning.
Catachans: We fight hard and we drink tea hard
Well, at least the device has a lot material to work with to terraform the planet.
Ian looks like he is attempting a Die hard cosplay. Need to dirty up that vest. Mira looks like she walked out of the 70s, sans the 70s makeup.
Very strong "I forgot my PE kit" vibes from the get-go 😁
As an Aussie, the accents funny as.
I bought the audiobook right after watching your interview with Victoria, it was great!
you two are brilliant, a much needed spark humour in the long grim dark night of the future
This was so much fun.
You make me want to read that book just through your fun review.

The Wraithbone Phoenix? If so, a great book and I'm sure they'd enjoy it.
