With this and Mira interviewing Graham McNeill about Mechanicum, we are in a book rich environment. 😍👍 Victoria is so high energy that she overwhelms her bandwidth. This is how to sell people on the idea of reading books. Victoria, "I am so lucky to have Gav Thorpe as my writing mentor..." [Ian, Mira, and the audience all gasp] The Warhammer Romance imprint could be called, "Bodice Ripper".
Victoria is bang on the money. Nerds in particular massively overrate the importance of "plot" when plot is never the actual reason they love the material. Characters, drama, tension control and world building are all SO much more important.
Story is character and character is story. I think it's easier to do this kind of wishy-washy slice-of-life work in a novel than on film, but - on a fundamental level - story is about tracking change. I think that's an inherent weakness to the Space Marine books: These are not people who can change very much over the course of a story. They are roided-out, Emperor worshiping super soldiers on page 1, and they are roided-out Emperor worshiping super soldiers on page 400. Plot is deeply important. What nerds often get wrong is that world-building consistency and lack plot holes have very little to do with story quality. Bolter rounds have no exact ballistics, they're made up, and it doesn't matter if a bolter goes through 3 layers of stone in novel X and bounces off in novel Y. What does matter is who the story is about, what they're trying to achieve, and what they have to do in order to achieve it. And I definitely agree that a certain segment of the sci fi fanbase spend WAY too much time arguing about bolter ballistics or lightsaber crystal theory.
Very interesting food for thought there, thanks for taking the time to write out a long thought provoking insight. I agree with the sentiment but also in universe laws of physics need to be consistent across the setting with bolter rounds penetrative strength as the example cited otherwise inconsistently across books written by different authors breaks immersion. Void warfare suffers particularly badly with this with some authors having lance beams shot hundreds of thousands of km away and other authors up close and personal before firing shots.
I love what Mira has done with the author interviews on her own channel but the two of you interviewing together is just next level! More of this please ❤
What an amazing interview, and what a wonderful guest speaker! I've never encountered Victoria Hayward before, but her enthusiasm and energy is so obvious. As someone with quite a few girl friends who are curious about Warhammer but put off by how masculine and inaccessible the communities can be, this is going to be the media that I attempt to introduce them to the setting with.
@@totalCoolerUsername you get bulk of your video views in the first day of upload. Just want to say, blood sands is an amazing short story and Victoria writes and understands guardsmen mentality very very well. Looking forward to this book.
On the romance: gives a new meaning to „star-crossed lovers“. Maybe crossing. It‘s also quiteneatly geared to undermining fhe jmperium-centricness of it all. So have the tony, an imperial zealot, duetting with maria, insert maximally icky faction, singing “there’s a place for us”.
I was so excited to see she was gonna write in a little smooch for the cadian guy and Adare, because I was definitely picking up on that vibe, kinda glad she didn't given it would have prefaced her dying though
I really enjoyed this book!! I figured it would just be another generic 40k story but Hayward did a really good job making the characters fun and adeptly showing the death of a world in a way other books failed to achieve. It was really impressive how she made characters you actually care about out of these familiar tropes.
Amazing interview. Absolutely sold me on this book. I was probably not going to read it at all, but now I’ve bumped it up to next on my list. Can’t wait for the book club to come out.
It’s really cool to see these for new releases. Really nice to shine a light on newer black library offering. I’ve heard great things about this one but not read it.
I'm really looking forward to listening to Deathworlder. I'm really glad that Victoria gave Jude a shout out too, she's an excellent human being and insanely talented.
So cool! I hope you get to interview Jude Reid sometime - she's lovely IRL, one of the most creative people I've ever met. A true icon in the UK larp community.
I've lived in Notts (Beeston more pedantically) for the last 12 years and after moving to start a PhD... yes it is hard to leave the house without meeting some-one connected to GW
This is a fantastic interview. An absolute joy to watch and listen to - the rapport between the three of you is fantastic! (Also yeah you should interview Jude Reid)
Great interview. I’m honestly surprised how well she communicated the vibe of 40K despite being one of the newer authors. I’ll be buying her stuff from now on. Let’s hope a hardback is on the way for my bookshelf.
Just want to say that I bought the audiobook because of this interview, I'm half way through and loving it. While the Catachan don't sound Aussie, they do all talk like Jason Statham and I'll accept that as a worthy substitute.
This interview was a treat, well done all around guys. Deathworlder was a gem(hehe) of a novel, clearly written by someone who loves 40k and I quite enjoyed the audiobook version. I also loved seeing Victoria's enthusiasm and understanding of the setting on display here, she's quite charming as well as a talented author and I look forward to enjoying more awesome 40k stories written by her in the near future.
Nice! I was just thinking about downloading Deathworlder on spotify for my upcoming vacation. As often, your bookclub convinced me and I'm even more exited for the vacation to start 🙂
Well I liked her book more than any of your average Gav Thorpe who (imo) tends to write mostly bolterporn. A hell of a first full lenght book tbh. I do also recommend that Adrian Tschaikovski, which is Tyranids & Mechanicus instead of two of the most boring versions of guard... but to reiterate, I liked this book, I just don't particularly like cadians of catachans.
What fun energy interview! I had to turn off after a little while as it seemed to get a bit spoilery. But I might pick the book up because of this video. Gonna read that Genestealer cullt one first tho I think.
Victoria's novels Deathworlder is so dang good, if you haven't listened to the audiobook, I highly recommend. I wanted to ask though, I'm trying to find books by the author she mentioned; Jude. Do they have a Pen Name or something? I cant find their books. I want more good imperial guard books dang it! Anyone know who she was talking about?
@@stevepirie8130 there a heavy bolter gunner for laying down squad support fire, is that consider as a weapon specialist? Also I've a sharpshooter in the squad.
I enjoyed it and say it's worth a listen, especially if you're a big fan of the Imperial Guard. Felt like proper grimdark, in the way old 40k books used to.
Great interview with a fantastic author. It's one of the best written BL books I've read, and really looking forward to finishing. So much good stuff in it!

Her views on tyranids was perfect we shouldn't know what their intentions are. They are the most alien thing about Warhammer not even from our galaxy.
