ya all did it the hard way, back in the 80's one job I had was starting the bus fleet after sitting for 2 days in minus 15 degree weather, this bus should have had rear start buttons and an opening to add ether right on the engine intake so rather than running back and forth you spray ether right into the intake and hit the start button and used a screw driver on the throttle, trust me after starting some 40 buses that made the difference
Holy crap that’s gotta kick the daylights out of the batteries…glad they survived and were able to get the engine running. Also, isn’t there a port on the engine to spray the ether into?
Volvo and Scania bus with V8? No chance by Volvo, maybe Scania 30+ year ago. Only Mercedes end Setra (MB engine) where V8 engines, also way back, sounded great though.
Actually a Detroit Diesel especially the 71's prefer to be revved so they have enough oil pressure to lubricate the upper part properly. Kick the rpm up to 1000rpm and keep that jimmy happy. And what you meant is actually the engine doing this to help the fuelpressure.
The sound made me want to projectile puke. My Cummins 8.3 Turbo all mechanical no electronic fuel injection no electronic nothing Has never sounded like that a day in it's life. No matter what just touch the key and it starts and runs instantly and sounds like an engine that is getting oil. Those Detroit's are some pure junk and powerless to.
Very satisfying when it finally starts up.

thanks =)
I sure do love when an old engine starts up.

Not that I know of or was ever shown, only other time I’ve had to use ether I sprayed into the air intake
@@skinnylee2 do you have an operator's manual? It should show a little tube/ port on the engine that allows ether to be sprayed.
Runs nice
Nice bus, thanks for saving it.
Holy smokes
Wow...nice bus! If you ever want to sell it LMK. Been looking.
nice. What is the mileage on that bus?
What does this guy do coming to the right rear side of the body?
The engine air intake is at the top. He is spraying ether into it
I miss those buses!!
I have never seen a Detroit diesel on the road (I'm european) and as a child I always wondered why the US buses in the movies sounded so weird...
@@Munakas-wq3gp yeah, Detroit Diesel 6v71, 6v92 and other similar sounding bus engines must be the famous sound for movies and shows.
@@QueenNatasha_KingGibson8501 Down here all bus engines are Scania or Volvo 4-stroke V8's. And nowadays electric...
@@Munakas-wq3gp cool! In Canada we have new flyer buses

Low compression diesels need glow plugs.
I miss those fish bowl bus
you dont have rear starter? she alive !!!!!!
Normal start circuit is bypassed at the moment so rear start switch is inoperative.
Zach 🧔🏻♂️ driving that exact bus that’s in the video #1130
The wheels on the bus go round and round
Is that electric starter equipped on your bus
Yes
Actually hardly smoked at all on start-up considering the temperature an all.

I take it. It hasn't ran in a while
It wouldn't have started if it was -20 or -25 with no block heater.
Not a 6v71 thats a 6,v92
No it’s not a 6,v92 if you knew your detroits you’d know it’s a 6V92
@@cidertom5140huh?
@@tjlovesrachel Detroit don’t call them 6,v92 it’s a 6v92
You don't rev up a cold engine 2:45

@@AllianceB95 That applies to aircraft as well. 500-1000 RPM depending on oil viscosity until 40C.
@@jonathanbaird8109 Best thing to do is pre-heat the block to 40c and do a warm start. (Block heater ooor anything for that matter)
