The good ole days when Rudolf Diesel invented the principle and built the machines, soot was an indicator of getting it wrong. Look at how little the Sulzer machines (from 1921?) emit and how well they start.

Many German diesel locomotives feature pre-heating systems. Sometimes electrically but also fueled bij diesel combusting. Brings te engine to a cosy 30+ degrees celcius. Less engine wear less polluting smoke fumes. Seeing those big engine strugle in cold seems so avoidable.
Reminds me of my X waking up in the morning 😂😂😂.

When the locomotive is starting, it is difficult when it is cold and when it starts once, while it is hot, the engine is stopped on purpose and they start it again, it starts at the touch of a button

We call it "Cosby Sauce" here in the states. Look up " Bill Cosby" and a can of Ether in his hands will kind of make sense.

I thought changing the oil in my car was bad imagine change in the oil in one of these behemoths👍🏻
If you've ever changed the oil for a diesel engine, you will be amazed just how black it is, compared to a petrol engine. I use it to regularly stain my wooden fence. Cheap as and gets rid of any borers or termites 👍

@@nramrez My neighbour is an excavator who gives me all the used oil from his machines. It's black on black and lasts about 3 years. He appreciates me taking it off his hands. Sometimes I have flashes of brilliance. 👍😂😂😂

Modern usa diesel locomotives dont even have transmissions, they are coupled to a generator, some with shafts to the generator.

Most of diesel locomotives don't have transmission. Diesel engine drives generator...
They have Diesel engines, that power generators that power the drive wheels and the crew’s needs.
Even back in the 1930s diesel locomotives were diesel electric. The diesel turns a generator that powers electric traction motors

It will stir up the accountants first, dark black smoke means poor combustion which means wasted fuel and wasted fuel is wasted dollars.

Fantastic :we need more of these environmentally friendly engines !, amazing how they take very complex hydrocarbons that are long chain molecules and difficult to break down (and can be hazardous ) and through the process of combustion break them down to much simpler compounds and then return them to the environment from where they came ! - well done🎉❤

aren't pretty much all modern diesel locomotives electric with diesel engine generators? How long have they been in that configuration or have diesels always been electric?

Boxill-Harris, I have another interesting idea for most of you Class 313, Class 314 and that also is including those interesting Class 315 Fans out there, rather than scrapping most of those Class 313's Class 314's including the Class 315's maybe you guys can convert them and including the refurbishment into those Leyland 680 Engine, Volvo B10M Engine, Cummins M11 Engine, Gardner 6LXC Engine, Gardner 6LXB, Engine, Gardner 8LXB Engine, Class 313's, Class 314's and the Class 315's and convert all of them into a 2 Carriages and Three Carriages of the Class 313's, Class 314's and that is including those Class 315's for most of us Class 314's and the Class 315's Diesel Train Fans out there Please Are you still going to do this interesting type of Project for all of us out there Pretty Please?

My work vehicle doesn’t like to start when it’s cold outside it usually takes about three times to get started and it’s not even a diesel engine it’s a gas engine
