This reminds me of something you would take camping. I think a little butter on the outside of the bread may give a tastier product. I like the idea other commenters gave of making & folding your sandwich half before placing in the cooker.
I was going to say we used to have something similar - cast iron with a longer handle - that we would use when we went camping. We'd fill the sandwiches with Nutella, fruits, jams, etc.
100% this. You usually put a little butter or something on the outside. It basically makes "grilled cheese" style sandwiches. We used to make them with pizza-toppings inside.
I am aware of that but you also don't need need to be right on top of it as the shoirt handles on these would require at times and long handled sandwich makers of similar design to this exists, better yet they usually can fit 2 full slices of bread. I will admit these could be used on a campfire but i prefer longer handles for safety reasons.@@chasehaynie879
This seems to me like it should have been called the 'Homemade Hot Pocket Maker'. You can't say that the end result did not look--and sound--like a hot pocket.

Might be good for mini hobo pies like we uses to make camping with the sandwich iron. Sprinkle buttered bread with sugar and cinnamon, fill with canned pie filling and toast it up.
That's the first thing I thought of. Put a longer handle on it and it's campfire pie time. We used the camp sandwich version with pre made pie crust and fill it with crushed graham crackers marshmallows and chocolate to make s'mores hand pies.
Full sized versions of this product have been around for a long time, so far as I'm aware. They're campfire and fireplace cooking devices, and certainly seem convenient. The smaller size and non-stick surface of this product is essentially just for novelty for the most part. Functional enough, but less practical. I imagine other companies have made larger campfire cooking devices like this using modern non-stick materials for years now, but they're mostly sold from those specialty companies that cater to that crowd.
Would have been interesting to see you try a couple of tortilla recipes. Small or medium sized tortillas look like they could fit in and make for some tasty quesadillas
This is similar to our camping version, just smaller/shorter handles. We call them pie irons and use them over the fire. Non stick cast aluminum is much better than the classic cast iron.
At first I thought this this is DEFINETELY going on the "Worst Of" list, but it seemed to redeem itself. Pretty niche product, like he said, good for camping (and not much else, imo).
We used to have the version that was the size a of full piece of bread for camping when I was a kid. I don't know of anyone that tried to use anything but a campfire with them.
This product reminds me of more full sized camp / fireplace toasters. Just in mini for some odd reason. The hinge on those is pretty much the same as this, and that is so it can be taken appart easily for cleaning,
Those are a knockoff of the original pie irons that we used in Girl Scouts when camping (1960's). The handles were much longer. It was preheated in the campfire, open & use a stick of butter to butter up the insides (it sizzles), put in a piece of bread, filling (sandwich or pie filling) another piece of bread then hinge back which leaves some crust sticking out the sides when locked. Then back on the fire, the crust burns off and turned over and checked. When the crust is toasty it is ready to eat. They are yummy!
I have something very similar to this for camping. It's a sandwich/Smores maker. Longer handle, bigger overall, and made of cast iron. But this is great for a Hot Pocket!
Hi James, this little thing makes me bit happy and sad. We have full size ‘pie irons’ by Rome for camping and fire pit food. You can stick anything sweet or savory and heat it over the fire. (Leftovers and PB&J are faves) However this can never work with fire it is short & non-stick which cannot stand fire. On the other hand for a quick replica without a fire this would be great for a snack or kiddo. The hinge should be open, the bread filled then folded with the device assembled last. Midnight Peanut butter, banana & chocolate chip treat.
This could be kinda niche. But my wife and I had weightloss surgery and could only eat about half a sandwich so something like this could be useful for those that like grilled sandwiches who also had bariatric surgery and doesn't want to use a pan for half a sandwich
We use one of these when we go camping but it's full size for a regular sandwich. We do pizzas, pb and chocolate, and even use Pillsbury pie crust with pie filling. You make them in the fire. Lots of fun and delicious!
Took a long break from your channel just because of the algorithm mainly. And my lord you grown a magnificent beard, give me some of those facial hair genes im desperate for them haha. Glad to see your still going strong.
Another one of those products which could have - with only a little bit more thought - been really versatile and quite good. Larger size. Stupid hinge problem resolved. No way to fix the resistance electric element problem, but using those plugs which aluminium cookware use to work on induction hobs, that would have been easily achievable. I appreciate Jame's enormous investment of time and patience trying to make this work - not condemning it out of hand, not making empty promises for it.
I could see this being a useful little contraption for making things like School Lunches for a young kid, or camping as mentioned. Outside of that though, I don't see any reason to buy one when similar products that make full size sandwiches and don't fall apart every few seconds are on the market.
You don't have to put the bread onto the plates, and awkwardly balance and insert the fillings like that. Why not just build the half sandwich first, then insert the whole thing into the plates after it's built
He was using it like the manufacturer showed in their video. It's how most people would use it because it's not fussy. Cutting bread and assembling first would work, but the idea is to be simple. Toss it together, fold and cook.
If they made sort of a slide hinge where you slide one side over pegs on the bottom (best I can explain it) to hold it together while prepping the sandwich, it would be more efficient and easier to use.
James, I'll give u the benefit of the doubt that you've never had a homemade mountain pie on the fire pit. Very similar cast iron device. Just lay the 2 sides down and lay the bread across the 2 sections. The loose clamp allows the cooking surface to expand for ingredients
My grandparents and my in-laws have one that doesn't come apart that makes a whole sandwich. We use it mostly for grilled cheeses and toasted sandwiches.
I had a larger version of this like 20 years ago when i was a kid. Only it did a full sandwich and you could also put other stuff in there. We did scrambled eggs once by dropping some eggs in and shaking it over a fire. Didnt leak at all
I have the whole sandwich version of this and have used it for years. It is great for fireside or campsite pies. White bread, butter and your favorite pie filling. Good stuff.
I would not have lasted half as long as you did before that thing would have hit the trash can! Your patience paid off and you got it to work. Not for me though. I have my parents full size versions that we took camping as kids.
A whole sandwich size might be useful. Also, if you have short hot dogs and no rolls, this gadget will produce a hot dog sandwich using bread, though it might be awkward adding onions and mustard. But for me, no sale.
The funny thing is, this IS perfect for things like hotdogs or making ham and cheese snacks. There are PLENTY of whole sandwich griddles like this. This is the first half one..and to me, it seems like a pretty good idea.
