The strawberry slicer, just like an egg slicer, needs to used on a flat sturdy surface, with you pushing down on the top part. Holding it in the air using both hands is likely why it was both difficult and why it launched the strawberries.
I'm sitting here watching that cringing wondering why he's not putting it on the flat surface testing it. It even as the feet on the bottom of it to keep it from slipping while using it!
I just use my egg slicer.
Came here for this comment, that was driving me crazy lol 😂
I was thinking the same thing
@@laurahubbard6906 Me too! I don't need cute for my veggies and fruit.😊
One doesn't generally hold the slicer up to a camera. Laying it flat on a surface would make it perform correctly.
I was screaming 😂
Right! I was talking to the video saying the same thing. "C'mon James, sit it on the cutting board and just close the lid on it." It's only launching them because you're technically squeezing from the top AND bottom when operating it the way he was.
Right? He could have tried at least one placing it on his cutting board.
He does it so that we get a better look at the gadget in action
Maybe just sit the strawberry slicer on the table/counter. It seems like your hands actually bounce when it finally completely cuts through.
Hack I recently learned about how to make bananas last longer: put them in the fridge. They'll last an additional few days, even though the skin will look brown, the banana won't be as bad as the skin looks.
I always was told that makes them ripen faster?
just try it out and see
Now here's The Flying Strawberries! Sounds like a 60's rock band
As per usual, Bailey was the true star of the show!
The strawberry huller also works to core tomatoes and small peppers. I use mine a lot especially with roma tomatoes when making sauce.
That makes sense! I was kinda surprised how deep the core went.
Smart!
Pineapples too (to remove the eyes)
I own the strawberry slicer and it is great. I do use it frequently because in warm weather I often make strawberry deserts that require sliced strawberries. I leave the slicer on a cutting board instead of squeezing it in my hand and I have never had a strawberry slice launch into the air like you showed. I think this product is great.
Now you know it can be weaponised should you ever need to shoot strawberries. Hope you’re never in such a jam though. 😉
@@clarewillison9379shooting strawberries would be sweet revenge
I bet you're fun to hang out with! I had a spit take with coffee on my phone when you said something about your hand being 3 feet away from the pepper corer 😂
I use my egg slicer for my strawberries. It just had wires, not blades. I use it for eggs, strawberries, mushrooms, etc. 🤷🏼♀️
Merry Christmas from Michigan!
*Edited to fix typo*
You're=You are. Please make a note of it.
@@DrummerGrrrl I know the difference, I'm a big girl. Sadly I'm not perfect and had a typo. I hope you have the kind of day you deserve!
The wire egg slicers seem a lot safer than the strawberry slicer.
@@DrummerGrrrldude chill lol
I have an all plastic pepper corer and I set the pepper on the cutting board and push the corer in as far as I can without it coming out the bottom and twist. I get almost all of the membrane and seeds out that way. You only pushed it in 1/2 to 2/3 as far as it would go. And for strawberries, I use my hard boiled egg slicer--works just as well.
I bet that 6-way slicer would be great if you made your own pickles.
The way the blades on the strawberry slicer are so oddly curved makes me think the added pressure needed to get all the way through might be to overcome their misalignment. Make sure the blades are straight and try again.
The strawberry huller could be used on a peeled pineapple to remove any remaining eyes, too.
A little less rotation on the twist with the pepper corer, I think. And certainly don't have your hand on the bottom- YIKES!
The banana keeper effect can be had with a small piece of plastic wrap.
Thanks and cheers!
you have to TASTE a banana to see how ripe it really is, the the skin is only a general indicator, it's not uncommon to find yellow peels on an overripe banana, and vice versa. That's why Organic bananas already come with plastic wrap on the end, since you pay more this helps them last longer.
For the cuke/carrot slicer: perhaps you could leave the cuke whole, insert it in the tool, and flip it over with the cuke on the cutting board, then press down until the handles touch the cutting board. Then flip it over, attach the pusher and complete the pushing through. It’s worth a try.
could also try a more uniformly sized cuc. and an Asian carrot. The English cucumbers tend to grow a little fatter at one end here. Persian ones might do well in that slicer; I saw that the label was in German and those are more common over there than the English style.
I nearly had a heart attack when you didn't put your pepper on the cutting board when inserting something with sharp metal points. I was waiting for the blood to come spurting off your hand not the way to see red and green this season 😂
And then we'd be doing the "'tis but a flesh wound" routine.
@@bikeny Thank you for making me laugh out loud so much I scared my cat 😹
The peppers: it's easier just to slice them vertically around the core. I looked up how to slice a bell pepper years ago and followed a Gordon Ramsay video, and it's very easy. That corer seems more trouble than it's worth.
When you accidentally launched those strawberry slices, the sound it made reminded me of the "click" from the Nintendo Switch ads 😅
Outside of physical limitation accessibility issues there's very few kitchen gadgets that perform better over just learning how to use a knife properly. Something like a vegetable spiralizer for making veggie sheets and noodles is a good example.
Thank you. 💜
i just think they're neat
Try the banana hats on unripe banana. Once a fruit is ripe you can't really stop it from getting soft but you can stop a fruit from getting ripe. You can use just plain plastic wrap over the end for the same effect.
I've found that if I leave the green bananas on the counter and they turn the perfect shade of yellow and are at peak ripeness (not mushy yet) I put them in the fridge and it slows down the ripening. You can't keep them in there too long but I personally hate it when they are too ripe and soft and this keeps them where I like them longer.
a ripe banana is when it develops spots and or the green is completely gone and is completely yellow.
the spots let you know when the sugars have developed and its ready to eat.
Source: a friends banana plantation
His bananas were green at the top when he put the hat on it...
In their promo video on youtube, they don’t show it on green bananas.
Honestly the plastic wrap works better and it’s best to separate them all and wrap each stem individually.
I think the reason your strawberries were flying out of the slicer was because you need to have it laying flat on the counter and then slowly push it down. I have one and mine have never flown across the counter lol. I agree with the banana hat. It is just an over priced hat lol
I’ve never seen cucumbers cut like that…maybe zucchini instead? It’d make great zucchini fries.
Pickle spears
For dipping in dips, though a bit chonky?
I have a little metal thingie for hulling strawberries. I only use it when I have a lot of strawberries that need this. I bought it years ago, it works fine, takes almost no space, and it won't break (no plastic). Saw several similar ones online when I checked just now, all cheaper than the one in the review.
I probably have the same one you have. I think it is at least thirty years old. It works great.
I use a rigid straw, poking up from the bottom, it takes the top off. Very neat.
9:44 Good girl, Bailey ❤ Dad threw wrong the second time😅😂
I love gadgets, but I'm always amazed at all the single-purpose kitchen gadgets being produced because people are afraid to use a good sharp chef's knife (which does it all and is way easier to use and clean and store).
Better fill up the landfills for half a second of convenience!
I mean I wanna point out some of these devices can be more easily used by people with joint problems. Though I know a lot of people thst use the strawberry huller because they grow their own berries and make like.. dozens of jars of jam so I get why they don't wanna cut lbs and lbs of strawberries when they can just pop them off quickly.
@@jaycebechtol8448 Sure, you have a good point! I just have a feeling that 80% of these cheap gadgets gets bought, used twice and thrown away. For some people they truly are good and usefull, but no need to have 12 different plastic-products which does the same marketed everywhere... in my opinion.
Oh darn! I was rooting for the Nana Hat ~ it's so cute
Massive produce out there in vegas!
The pepper corer is useful for people who make stuffed peppers regularly, since it's difficult to core and clean peppers properly while leaving them whole.
skill issue
But it also broke every pepper.
I have #3 the 2 pc fruit & veggie slicer (white & green). It works great on strawberries, cherry tomatoes, olives, grapes, etc. Yes, if the piece is small it will move around inside the white tube & you may not get perfectly even slices but it does a quick job instead of trying to hold onto small pieces to slice with a knife, definitely less risk of cutting your fingers. As for the fatter ends of the cucumber or carrot, you can just slice those in half lengthwise to trim down the girth so it will fit inside better. I like that tool, it certainly has helped me speed up the time it takes to slice up fruits & veggies.
As for those silly Nana Hats - save your $10+ tax & either use a bit of plastic cellophane wrap to cover the stems or separate the bananas from each other so they're not in a bunch. I've found them to turn brown & soft much slower using that technique.
The strawberry slicer would work fine placed on the cutting board. You can actually get more professional versions of the stem remover that work on apples, pears, etc., as well as strawberries. The wedge slicer would probably work best with English (seedless) cucumbers since they're thinner, and the strawberries of course. But, if you're really going to do a lot of wedge slicing on carrots or a number of other things, you might as well get a countertop, lever action wedge slicer. They're usually meant for lemons and limes, but you can get them big enough for oranges, and they'd probably do carrots as long as they're straight. And finally, just hang your bananas on a hook where the ethylene gas can rise away from them.
RE Strawberry slicer - You can just use an egg slicer to do the same thing. Works just as well and can, of course, slice eggs.
All of these are for one single job. Unless you have limitations with using a knife, at which time then these might help. Then they can all be done relatively easily with a knife. Most don’t need as much energy with a knife as the gadgets. I’d love to know if you could cut the items faster, than cutting things in half then cutting them. Or slicing strawberries. I know I can clean a pepper faster and not leave a crack in every one of them. Hulling strawberries would be ok if you cut a bushel a few times a month. But a knife you use one movement and the same tool.
5:00 User-error - you're supposed to use a strawberry slicer while it's resting on the counter and not held in your hand. This is why your berries are "launching". Berry/banana slicers have been around 50+ years. 11:00 Great way to earn a trip to the ER and a hand/finger amputation.
When I was growing up, we picked and froze strawberries and my mom had a little huller for strawberries. It was all metal and was about the size of metal on that piece.
To use properly, every one of these tools should be used on a flat surface, rather than holding it in your hand. Using these properly ensures much better results.
I have never known an animal to love vegetables so much! Some occasional grass for riffage, sure; but leaping reactions like Bailey's are generally for meat or treats.
Strawberry recipe I made for a potluck dinner many years ago: Cheescake Stuffed Strawberries. Slice strawberries in an X almost all the way through, starting with the pointy end and spread them open. Stuff with a mixture of 11oz cream cheese, 1/2 cup confectioners sugar, 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract. It fills 3 dozen strawberries.
covering the stem of the banana does nothing to slow banana ripening. the ripening process is initiated by the banana packagers artificially, before it goes to the shelves, once it starts you aren't going to stop or slow it down.
Loving all the new videos lately! You are one of my favorite reviewers I always enjoy seeing what new crazy gadget you are going to show. :)
I worked in prep for years ... we used a vegetable peeler tip to de-hull the berries. Works perfectly.
I got one of those pepper seed cutters. LOVE IT.
The pepper corer looks like a trip to A and E waiting to happen.
For the bananas, use plastic wrap on the ends.
For the strawberries use a fork, insert fork right under green stem, slide fork all the way through it pulls green and core.
I can see using the veggie slicer with pickling cucumbers when making cucumbers
The strawberry slicer is supposed to be placed flat on a solid surface not held in your hand.
I like the strawberry destemer, but I guess I've always ate my strawberries by holding the stem and just biting off as close as possible. I guess that could be useful if I had to share the berries with other people.
James have you thought of reviewing other ninja products excluding the blenders, like the coffee maker, pans, wood fire oven, 12-1 smart double oven, everyday cooker,
This whole episode I kept saying, "Just use a knife."
The banana cap works entirely backwards. Grocery stores have to vent bananas to stop them going ripe, and keep them sealed when you want them yellow for sale.
They also ripen other fruit/vegetables put in a bag with them
Had a gadget for removing strawberry stems when I was a kid, it worked the same way but was made out of a strip of metal, probably about 5 inches long, folded over in the middle to provide a natural spring action. Took up a lot less space in a drawer without all that plastic.
I have that strawberry slicer and I really like it :) Not sure if it's the same brand, but I've always just put mine in the top rack of the dishwasher and never had any issues. I also have a similar pepper corer. It's a corer, not a "seeder", so I never expected there to be no seeds. Quick rinse .. no big deal :)
As far as the stem remover on the strawberry, it's far better than cutting so much usable strawberry off the top. That said, you can use a straw to remove and "core' a strawberry. You do have to manually remove any leaves, but other than that, try a good straw. As far as slicing. I can't say I honestly ever had a reason to slice strawberries neatly. I'm usually cutting them up into small pieces to put in some sugar water for strawberry short cake. Mmm.
Like the strawberry slicer, think I will order one
Looks like a brand TJ Maxx & Marshalls carries. Probably half the price there! 😊
@@aisforannihilation1662 thanks I will check on that
Just buy thinner Zucchini. For the strawberries I just use a straw (start on the pointed side and then push the straw through).
That strawberry slicer part of the video is unintentional comedy gold. 😂
Always going to have some seeds in the peppers. Cold water 💧 rinse takes care of that always
I love your reviews!!! Been watching you for years and have bought so many things you have recommended or at least said was good. Keep up the good work!
For peppers after cutting the hole I just smack the opening on my hand and all the seeds come right out.
"Jump back! Pinch myself! High!" A play on James Brown from what you said with the 1st item.
As for the pepper corer. If you hold the pepper with your thumbs on the stem and your fingers on the bottom and touch push down. The stem will pop into the pepper. No waste. Then you can rip it in half and get the same result.
I like Joie products. As someone who loves kitchen gadgets they make some really cute and useful gadgets.
The number of “that’s what she said” moments in this video is epic
Everyone take a shot everytime James says we shall see!😂 don’t drive after you play the game!!!!
1:53 I have a different strawberry huller and find it very useful for other fruits and veggies. Perfect for Tomatoes!
The “strawberry launcher” is hilarious. I’ve got one and my strawberries have never ever launched LOL. I wonder if the instructions say: place on flat surface.
I would like to see you compare the effort and time of using the gadgets vs. using a knife - including washing both. :-)
Slicing the Strawberries would have been much easier, had you used the cutting board to sit the slicer down beforehand.
That strawberry cutter is meant to be on the counter and you press down
Pop goes the weasel there, right?! So funny. I ducked. lol.
A grapefruit spoon works really well for removing strawberry stems.
Wrapping the banana stems in a damp paper towel does the same thing as the Nana hat and it's way more cost effective.
Tip for anyone: For strawberry stems, just use a metal straw. Push it up through the center of the fruit. Works wonders.
thanks for the review on the gadgets. I think I will just stick to the knife right now.😊
The "control" bananas look best cuz you didn't squeeze the end (opposite of hats) of that pair the way you did the ones you put things on
That strawberry slicer works great on egg too 😉
For the Bananas some just put foil on the top to slow it down.
I us a small melon baller to take off strawberry stems
I definitely appreciate your video's! They truly save me from buying some products and wasting my money! Thank you!!! Also, I love that Bailey loves her veggies! So cute!! 🙂
Another great review of kitchen 'helpers', happily none will find their way into my kitchen drawers.
for the bananas, i've heard you can just wrap plastic wrap around the stems for the same result for fractions of a penny
strawberry corer hack: push a boba straw through it Sheesh I guess the instructions didn't mention keeping it on the table instead of holding it in your hand
Where did you get the shelves on the right side of the screen? Love the videos! Thanks!
its always interesting to hear different linquistic and cultural naming forms, and that is why i enjoy watching. what you call bell peppers we call capsicum. but there have been many others over the years. keep it up, understanding cultural differences makes us all better people.
Strawberry slide should add glass cover, that would be perfect!
If you hold that partially sliced strawberry just right, it looks like Audrey, from, "Little Shop of Horrors"...😂
To prevent strawberries from launching, just turn it upside down. Slices go straight onto your work surface.
There must be a product out there designed to launch various fruits and vegetables on ballistic trajectories. And I have faith you will find it one day
11:45 Again .. STOP HOLDING IT!!!!!!!!!! The pepper should be ON THE TABLE!!!
Time to make some banana bread! What does work on them is separating them into individual bananas and wrap the stems in plastic wrap. They ripen from the stem to the end, and the gases can't really get out if you wrap them individually. The reason the banana hats aren't keeping the gases in is because they are leaking out from between the junction of the bananas that's not covered. Wrap the full stem individually and you will get at least 1-2 weeks longer. Works great with plastic wrap, no extra expense needed.
I've had dogs that would eat vegetables mixed in with meat and gravy in their bowl, but never a dog that would get excited for carrot or capsicum. Thanks for the content.
So, the pepper stem remover is pretty much meant for stuffed peppers so you can keep the top intact for presentation I assume? I'm usually not a fan of single use gadgets so I dunno.
Feel like the strawberry stem remover is the most versatile and it being so tiny, doesn't take up much space.
after watching this i have to ask myself, why would a company invest money making these gadgets that serve no real purpose.?
When you said, "Shove it" 😂
Imagine a apocalyptic scenario and you find any of these.
That's how necessary.
Nana hats keep the insides fresher longer, atleast thats what i have noticed, than if you dont use them, the outward skin still changes though.
Seems to me like the point to keeping bananas fresher is a total block of air to the end that is covered by these gadgets but clearly air can get to the end from the bottom up. I'm thinking bananas don't like silicone myself. Saran wrapping the end, where you can go thru the bananas and totally keep the air of that end is likely the better choice, though I will say hanging bananas on a hook helps all by itself. Them laying on their sides always causes bruising. Great review! Thanks
Strawberry hullers are also great to de-eye pineapples!
You can easily pop the stem, & seeds out, & use just your thumbs
Supposedly wrapping each individual banana's stem in plastic wrap is the best way to slow ripening.
With the Nana hat, you can use a piece of foil & get a similar result.
The best tool you'll ever have in the kitchen is a good 8" chef knife.
Try putting the strawberry slicer flat on the table instead of holding it up in midair.
