Another great video and powerful message Steve, thanks loads. I think for me at least the danger with alcohol is how insidious it is - for a long time you can be regularly drinking too much, but not really seeing any serious consequences. There is a decline, but you don't notice it because it seems insignificant. In reality you're walking on a thin floor, and there's a slow burning fire below. Sooner or later if you carry on drinking, the floor will get so thin that the fire starts to spread through and the floor starts to fall in. It's at that point we start to lose friends or partners, and then jobs, health and money fall through the floor as well. I really think it creeps up on you - you're right, often by the time we come to terms with being an alcoholic, a lot of damage has already been done but it doesn't have to be too late.

Hi Steven It was really interesting listening to your story. I have been sober for 14 months now and look and feel so much better. I was drinking 3 bottles of wine every day and sometimes 3 bottles of cider with that as well. The biggest problem for me was the sucidel tendencies I had when drinking and the days lost due to hangovers. If you have mental health problems it only makes them worse. The booze will ease anxiety for a few hours but the next day you feel a hundred times worse. I did such stupid, reckless and dangerous things when I was drinking, it's a miracle that I'm still alive. Yes, there are still times when my anxiety is overwhelming (just recently moved ) and I was seriously tempted to run out and get a bottle of wine but I don't want to go down that horrible path again and just try to deal with the anxiety and know it will calm down in time.
There is absolutely NOTHING positive about alcohol!!

I tried to cut back on my my drinking in my late 40's and thought 3-5 pints a night was safe amount, as long as I didnt binge heavily. Felt fine, plenty of energy, work was good , got promotions and won awards but blood pressure always high. Doc said 3-5 beers a night is like eating 2-3 big macs in terms of calories and all the other garbage. So alcohol gets you in many ways. Now on first week t-total, feel better but I do hope a can have the odd blast (6 pints max) such as xmas without losing will power and going back to daily 3-5 habit, 6pm after work. Mate of mine abstains, eats super healthily, does marathons but once a month has a blow out with friends. Hope I can do the same. I know some proper heavy drinkers cant do this and need to give up completely for their own good. I dare say I might have to as well is that will power wains. Thanks for the pouty words of wisdom and honesty mate.

Steve, my person has been chemically addicted for years and years. He can drink a big bottle of vodka every two days. He cheated on me on a bender. I always worry about him and how much longer his body can take this. He had a high blood pressure andstomach problems. Heartburn. He had gained about 60 pounds. I will still worry about him every day. I just can’t help it.

Said I’m the best thing that ever happened to him and I don’t deserve this. Said he’s not going to stop drinking and gave me a big check to me move. He . wasn’t willing to do anything or get help. Very sad. We had a great relationship except I was always just worried about his drinking. And his health was going downhill. This was the first bad thing he has done in 13 years. He wasn’t the stereotypical alcoholic. He never called off. Didn’t cause chaos. Was kind and giving. He was a great person, but you could see the addiction getting worse over the past 3 yrs. I’ll always love him.

Well done for telling your story openly and honestly. Your comments are clearly resonating with a lot of people and it's giving them strength and motivation. Great work.
I'm 8 days in to my first real break from alcohol in 45 years. I've never been what I'd describe as a heavy drinker but I've drunk alcohol just about every day so it's certainly habitual so I've started to listen to the dire predictions, hopefully before it's too late. I've not encountered any health issues previously (although I'm told I have a fatty liver) and i've always kept myself really fit and I've eaten healthily.
Currently I have no cravings for a drink but I have felt a bit nauseous and I've had headaches. However, the worst bit is the lethargy and I'm feeling really low. Is this to be expected? I was looking forward to increased energy levels, loads of motivation and cognitive clarity. Am I expecting too much too soon?
