The tanks on Ford Falcons and Mustangs has a drop in tank that would leak gas into the passenger compartment when rear ended. Should of been recalled but it was cheaper to pay the families for their losses
They pulled the same stunt with the Suzuki samurai claiming it would roll over at anything over parking lot speeds. None of the stunt drivers could get it to flip on a course set up to make it roll. The producer got infuriated and called the stunt drivers idiots. He then showed them how it’s done. He literally drove the little samurai like a formula one car around a set of tight curves and was successful at proving that idiots shouldn’t drive.
The problem was the gas tanks were mounted on the outside of the truck frame. The gas tank had only the sheet metal of the truck bed outer skin as protection. This was a really dumb and dangerous design. GM got the upper hand by suing NBC despite the stupid design.
Still an insanely hazardous design. People died in fires from the saddlebag fuel tanks. The devices just made sure that they did t have to crash several vehicles to get a fire.
I don’t know anyone that died because of a Chevy truck with saddle tanks. But as a professional mechanic I can tell you that almost every modern pickup made in the last twenty years they all have side mounted fuel tanks.
@@jahnw1392 it was never the fuel tanks that were the problem. It was the filler neck and fuel cap. Those obviously were on the outside of the body let alone the frame. Much like today’s pickup trucks.
GM should have took every damn penny from them those democrats would have crept in their pants be in penniless to shame General motors and Chevrolet don't have the same initiative to build quality any more that build just

I remember that episode they made it sound like every single GM truck of that vintage would explode once a side hit occurred.
Almost 4 decades later, nothing has changed at NBC.

Probably just confused the Ford Pinto getting hit from behind and exploding, which was a real thing.
The fuel cell was outside of the frame rail under the front of the bed on the driver's side. I had one of them.
