Man I know this is 6 years old and you will probably never see this comment but thx 🙏🏻 my friend I’ve scoured the internet RUclips and just found this video and when I heard that noise coming from your truck I almost shouted! Right now it’s 1:24am in Tennessee that means I was about 6 hours away from replacing my transfer case well I guess I don’t need to tell you the hell this noise can put you through thank you man for taking a minute to pass on that information God bless you friend!
So, just like many folks on here, I have had the grinding noise happening for a week or so. I have 210K on my truck, so I went ahead and replaced the following: upper A-arms with ball joints, lower ball joints, pitman arm, idler arm, tie rods, sway bar links, rotors, pads, new hub bearings, and CV shafts. Still had the noise. I didn't know where to go from there. I thought it might be my abs module, but then I stumbled onto this video. I took the back wheels off and the calipers. The rear pads and rotors looked good, but the parking brakes were bad and very loose on both sides. I pulled those off, put it back together, and took it for a test drive. The noise was gone. I will replace the parking brake assemblies in the next few days. Thanks for posting this video, it is a life saver. I was gonna do the front end work anyway, so I didn't mind spending the money, but for someone who is not able to do that at the moment, this is a very inexpensive thing to try before you start chasing a ghost.
On the silverados when you hear the noises most of the time its the rear differental when it spins. If its not your emergency break parts ,please dont go buying a drive shaft or u-joints first. Open up the rear differental cover and make sure you got abowl for the fluid. Look at your magnet that cathes metal flakes and look at the spider gear if its ate up replace them. Dont let any mechanics steal your bread that your family needs. God bless
Sounds like you are on point i brought a used rear end about 2 months ago and im hearing this noise in between 20 to 40 mph. Didn't have this problem until after the replacement
Thank you so much for posting this!!!! The mechanic shops I went too quoted me $4k in repairs for this issue... After watching this video I told my mechanic to check the emergency brake and he was able to fix for under $50... You saved me thousands by posting your experience with this video. Thank u so much!!
I've been having a similar issue for a while now and I've just been putting it off cuz it hasn't caused any problems too noticeable damage to the truck. After finding this video I think you found my solution. I have yet to test it, but I'm happy I found your video even if I didn't and it's an excellent video of so thanks for posting. It's still helping people out 7 years later
My grandpa had a 2000 silverado that had this issue and had a bunch of different shops change out u-joints and drive shafts and shocks for years. He sold me the truck and after a ton of research i found this vid and now the trucks is perfect and this was the issue. Thanks for all your help !!!!
Just wanna say, I've been dealing with this noise for months with no solution in sight. I was vaguely searching for anything that might help and this solved my problem immediately. Great video including the actual sound so I could determine what I was dealing with. Thank you so much!
Was your sound almost like a rattle, I’ve been dealing with this as well and it’s more when the right side axle is being flexed more and it’s at lower speeds. E brake does go to the floor so could be it.
had same problem for months spent hours under truck after waching your video one hour and three cents worth of lock tite problem solved i can't thank you enough
I have a truck that had this same issue with the e brake. Finally I found it myself after new hub assemblies, and cv axles. It's a noise that's really hard to pinpoint. Glad you got it figured out. After four vehicles of the same basic type I've decided to stick with them, since I know most of their quarks.
I have a 2011 z71 silverado and it makes that sound so far i have taken it to 5 mechanics a none found anything, i saw this video and got under my truck and boom found it!!!!! That was after watching your video thank you very much , this week im fixing it ,thank you again!😊
It was a light rattle indicating smaller parts, those other mechanics were D-heads, all those other parts they replaced would have made more of a clunking noise. What a sad state of affairs when professionals stuff it to somebody. Thanks for your time making this video, this is why I do all my own work, I may miss on a few but it's just parts cost I eat and not the huge labor costs.
I just picked up my 2009 Silverado from the dealership and it’s still making this exact same noise! I got the same answer, exhaust hangers and ball joints. It clunks over bumps and makes a horrible grinding sound (intermittently) but the differential and transfer case fluids look normal. Thank you for posting this!
Nice vid! One of my favorite fix-it stories - some friends of mine bought a brand new Silverado. Every time they accellerated from stop, it clunked. they brought it back to the dealer a couple times and they said "it's the driveline taking up slack - these trucks do that". After a couple months, they brought it to Jiffy Lube and this high school kid said, "your truck is done - and, oh yea by the way I noticed there were no bolts in the transmission/transfer case crossmember. I put some in for ya". Ha ha! clunk was gone...
Yep just paid for anything that had a missing clamp or bolt to get one. So glad I came here. I only spent 60$ thankfully but it was enough for me to decide I was just going to figure it out myself somehow. Lol thank you so much.
I have been through this kind of situation so many times. My attitude now is to buy a basic vehicle with nothing on it --- manual transmission, no air conditioning, roll up windows -- etc. The problem with "options" is that they fall apart one day after the warranty expires. Of course you might have to go the used route to do this. I am a veteran and the Army Jeep is my kind of vehicle.
Got a noice coming from the rear of my 2001 Silverado 5.3. Abouy to go outside a jack it up to see whats going on. Your video along with all the comments are really going to help me with this. Thanks in advance. Will come back later with the news.
I think I heard this noise today. I heard a different noise the other day and I'm pretty sure its the starter but it went away the next time I drove it. I picked up a starter today thinking this noise might be related but now I'm not so sure. The noise I heard today only lasted a few seconds and sounded like a harley next to me. I'm changing the starter today because of the first noise and if I hear this noise again I will now know to loom at the e-brake. People like you have made my life so much easier so thank you so much. Ive had so many different noises from a piece of metal in the bed holes where you hook your straps, to the carrier bearing, to u-joints, to the exhaust hanger, and now starter and probably the e-brake. Lol
For those of you who just found this video...take a few seconds and read some of the comments. TONS of tips and ideas for your truck here. Really amazed at the amount of feedback on this video. Appreciate all the tips and feedback from you guys/girls...keep the comments coming
The Burb Billy hey so our Chevy Silverado 2000 Z71 Is making the exact same sounds as your truck what's up with it then we need to know what the problem was you didn't say it in the video
It was my emergency brake, parts rusted out and rattled around, this is covered at the end of the video. I know it was a longer video sorry about that, I was pissed off when I made it :-)
had my 04 1500 e brake adjusted at the cost of 340$ (needed new rotors I was told,) and had to take it back cause it still wasn't right. picked it up and was so pissed that it still wasn't right. So much for saving time and having a mechanic do the job. I didn't take it back until a month goes by and that same sound started happening. Thanks for the troubleshooting and giving me some ammo to bring into the office with. 3 Cheers "A good mechanic is (Yourself and a friend)hard to find." Me
This exact grinding noise just started on my 2007 Tahoe LTZ today. I was assuming transmission or drive shaft. This video gives me hope for a cheaper / easier fix. Thanks for posting this! Going to check mine out this week.
I have a 2002 chevy Silverado same grinding noise ...going on now..same place as yours... A double thank You..!! For putting this on...I will need to wait for next pay check to fix...... it's a relief..like a bull dozzer paving the way.....wow.we as American are supposed to help..thank You again..
THANK YOU SIR. My 04 Tahoe developed a weird intermittent noise all efforts to locate failed. When I watched your video and heard to same noise and it was E-brake on yours. I removed my rear rotors and one E-brake shoe had come off. Replaced, problem solved. THANK YOU AGAIN
WOW!! Thank you so much for posting this!!! Fortunately b4 I committed to getting it fixing it had another issue come up that superseded that one.... i got to tell you I would never have guessed.. i thought for sure you were going to say it was the leaf springs cause it just seemed in the video to match up with the noise. I can't thank you enough... it was driving me nuts. I can't wait to fix it!!! THANK YOU AGAIN! YOU ROCK!!!
I can not tell you how much I appreciate you making this video and posting it! It answered a question I have been trying to solve for MONTHS! I have a 2003 Chevy silverado and it all started with some slight rattles when I would hit a bump. Gradually the noise has gotten a lot louder. I have had everyone I know look at the truck to see if they could help me and no one could figure it out. I'm a single mom so taking it to a shop, as crazy as it sounds, worried me because I don't have tons of money floating around for them to guess or lie to me. I have prayed on it like crazy and found your video the first time I you tubed the problem. THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! It is the exact same noise! Thank you for making this video!
Marian, Thank you for your post. It put a smile on my face and I took my phone to my wife and said "read this one." Put a smile on her face as well and I got a big Awwwwww. So thank you.
This was all amazing between the video and all of the comments. I was sick worrying about what was wrong with my truck and how much money it was going to cost, then i found this video. And it was that dang E-brake. thank you everyone
Your truck was not the problem , the technicians looking at it failed, the folks who found your e-brake solution are the hero today... always research to find a reliable repair shop
Thank you so much for this video! My 2001 GMC Sierra was making the exact same sound and I was at my wit’s end trying to find where it was coming from. Took it to a mechanic and showed him a video I had taken with the noise and explained your situation with the e-brake. He said he pulled the back left wheel off and stuff started falling out! The e-brake doesn’t work but the noise is gone. He didn’t even charge me. Said if I wanted the e-brake fixed I’d need to go to a scrap yard and find a rear axel because the rust damage was so extensive, but if I didn’t care about it (I never used the e-brake anyway except while changing a tire and I always chalk the wheels when I do that anyway because I never trusted the e-brake in the first place) everything should be fine the way it is now.
I'm crying rn 😭 I just want to say thank the lord for you making this video and God bless you I just bought a 2000 chevy silverado with 50k on it for $1,000 all new trans dif transfer case all new suspension everything was replaced and all new tires and I took the wheels off ripped out the ebrake parts n boom problem solved
Quite enlightening video. Always good to have a vehicle, visually inspected , road tested and ramp tested. I suspected I have a differential noise and yet 4 mechanics have said it is the wheel bearings. Only two have said it is the differential causing a grinding noise. I'm still having more opinions before making a decision.
My truck just started this. I had no idea how to word what was going on but that sounds exactly what my truck just started doing. I try not to take my stuff to the shops because of the dishonesty ya have to deal with anymore but this may have pinpointed my problem from the get go. Thank u so much in advance and sorry u had to get the run around so much before ya got fixed.
bser3973 well blame that on the manufacturer's for starving their technicians with ridiculously low warranty labor times unfortunately there is very little reward financially for the hard-working technicians out there so being a parts changer is most beneficial financially.
and you would know would you ?? you are a mechanic ??, to be quite honest here the term now is automotive technician from all the diagnostics that a lot of us suffer through which we get paid little for. there is that much technology now that a lot of mechanics as you call them do not know everything and i would love to know the one true GOD mechanic that does i have been doing it for 25 years and i know a lot however each day i am still learning as it is that intense of a trade. so if auto-technicians are getting it wrong gaurantee if you dont tell them they are wrong they wont change however we all make errors of judgement, i recently told an owner of a buisness i rang him up after he diagnosed a car with a faulty head gasket on a car he told my customer now $4,000 to replace engine, i told him he was wrong and it was simply a coil pack , no sign of a head gasket failure at all, he did not like being told he was wrong as he was obvious some multi-millionare big franchise owner who thought he was the TOP dog,i have since replaced coil pack at a cost of $68 AUSTRALIAN i run a humble mobile automotive buisness myself and i have out-stripped a lot of these brand name people to shreds on diagnostics, i actually put the time in and fully research un-paid on problems i come across, and i really hope one day that my self learning pays off, not wealthy from doing it thats for sure, the more research you do the better, a lot of automotive work where people come unstuck is they start over complicating the thinking of it when it is usually the simple answer that is the correct one most glitzy workshops fall down on this though they work for money not problem solving and it is the same in every proffesion out there they work for money not because they should be applying their skills because that is what they do
bser3973 newer vehicles hav newer issues that mechanics miss. I got a volvo for almost nothing bc no one could fix it. Took me 2 months to nail it.....wrong remote receiver. I'm still keep my old stuff.....less electronics to troubleshoot.
while there is some truth to what you are saying I as a "mechanic" are no longer called mechanics but automotive technicians, and there are switched on Automotive technicians , called that because of the diagnostics we have to do, a lot of the time i am bogged down with research looking to fix problems and give solutions to people, unfortunatley people dont listen to mechanics they could not give a fuck about what i have to say , because $$$$ signs get in the way of people thinking clearly about safety etc... cars require loads and loads of work you can not just get in a car and drive without working hard continuosly on the car you have to have it running properly, you are wrong about "mechanics" not knowing what they are doing, if you give them patience time to bring solutions to you they will and treat them with the respect they deserve, i stuggle with making money as a mechanic, however it is bizzare seeing as we keep society in the modern era going, yet we are all largely underpaid, considering police, amnbulance fire departments, food transporters all grinds to a halt and society goes bakwards, so give it a rest , so sick of you people bagging "mechanics "
My 2003 Trailblazer EXT makes this exact noise, I am so happy I need to fix this right away........Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!You saved me a ton of troubleshooting.....
It’s not hard. People tend to find a shade tree mechanic or go to dealership and corporations. Shade tree is good for what they know. Corporations hire damn near anyone so you rarely find a good mechanic there. Look for the mom and pop shops that’s been in business for a while and specialize in your vehicle is the key. Ask questions learn to trust. Sometimes ask questions you know the answer to. Ask them to show you what’s wrong and what the fix involved. If they can’t answer your questions stand clear on them.
Hey Burb Billy thanks for posting, I was on the same frustrating adventure as u . Did cv axle, front rotors, took to mechanic on lift , took off front drive shaft and forgot what else. 4 months. After watching ur video I took the back wheels off and tighten the adjustments. My daughter is very happy . Thank you so much
I had the same grinding noise, but with mine it was the hub and it completely ripped apart on the freeway, snapped my caliper and bent the spindle. Luckily the caliper wedged my rotor and prevented the wheel from completely removing itself from my truck. So a heads up to prevent nose diving your vehicle.
+Marc Kosmo wow you got lucky! wheels coming off are no joke especially on the freeway. Good to hear it was just a repair you had to deal with and not much worse. Thanks for the post.
The Burb Billy, brother ya just saved my @$$! I was headed home yesterday and the grinding started. Drove around forever with the higher pitched tinging sound due to being told repeatedly it was shock housing and needed new shocks. Well sure enough took of the driver’s side rear wheel (parking brake is located) and brake caliper. As soon as I pulled the rotor off the parking brake shoe ring and slack adjuster feel out with it with needle bearing and the sprocket gear for the parking brake slack adjuster all feel out. Removed the rest of the chewed up metal brake pieces and the rest of the parking brake assembly inside the rotor. Put the wheel back on and took it for a test drive. Immediately the nose was gone. No more grinding and the high pitched tinging from the brake shoe ring assembly is gone. Never heard this truck sound so good. I too am a contractor and this happening just weeks from Christmas I thought I was toast and possibly the worst dad ever lol. Thanks again. Your post alone saved my families Christmas.
Joshua, Thank you for the msg and kind words. I'm glad to hear the video helped you out. It's messages like yours that make running a channel really worth it. Merry Christmas!
You too. I was thinking a new rearend all the way home yesterday with no real funds to replace one (1999 Z71). I mean really it would have been really tuff if I even had to take to and gear and axle shop. Just wow man, really dodged a bullet on this one. Awesome video.
I just bought a 2008 avalanche and it makes the exact same noise... I will be checking the emergency breaks today. Thanks for the video you're awesome!!!
Hey billy I have the same problem with my van 2006 savanna 1500 I recently change my rear brakes and serviced my rear axle after I accomplished what I did took it for a drive made a turn that's when I heard the same sound that you recorded.Thank You very much for your vlog now it make sense because that was the only thing I have done on my van it was also driving me nuts.Thank You again!!God Bless You!
Hey Billy, well we had the same noise driving us crazy. Thank to your video you helped our craziness that we have been listening to for month! Tell you shop Thank You. Just about went out and bought a whole front end. Thanks Again your the shit!!
Had the exact same thing happen to my 2013 Chevy Silverado. The way I found out the cause of the noise was when it shredded the tube that feeds the brake fluid and when I went to hit the brakes and they didn’t work. Could’ve killed people. Thank you, Chevy and all the over priced mechanics in the Chevy dealership. Wish I could own a house, but instead I constantly have to repair my truck. 👍🏻
Damn man. I feel your pain. Great job filming and trying to figure it out yourself. You save a lot of people money. Thanks for passing that on. God Bless
Good thing you finally put the camera under the truck to record video and audio. I have a mechanic that has a mobile operation... he comes to you to repair your vehicle. I had a similar problem with a Pontiac Torrent. This fellow didn't give up until he had diagnosed the problem after several test runs. The bonus part was getting a bill for the original price and not the extended time he took to finally fix the problem. It's great to finally find a mechanic that you can have genuine confidence in. I'd be keeping this fellas name and contact info handy. Sorry it took so long for your to find someone you can trust.
Thank you for sharing this with us, I have a terrible noise and I thought it could be the transfer case. I have been told my emergency brakes did need replace a while ago, so I’m checking that first now. Thanks for the tip.
oh man that's loud. I'd have a heart attack if I heard that from my chevy. well thankfully now I know what the potential problem could be, thank you for the video.
my 2014 Chevy is doing this same sound. I too have gotten many of the same "it could be" answers! Thank you My E break will be checked this weekend. I really hope that's what it is because I cant afford anymore down time or shop fees
That sucks you had to go threw all of that man for a simple fix, can understand your frustration man!! I had a noise not as loud as yours and I knew it was the u joints! I went to this local mechanic or shop, they said the same thing I have a bent drive shaft lol…. I said yea right go get F! After I left they called me back and apologized for the miss information! At the time I didn’t have a Jack or the patients to do it myself but the part was 25 bucks and they wanted to charge me 450$ to do it for me! To replace u joints man!!!
your problem is that its built after 2000. for some reason after 1999 model yr they have lots& lots of recalls. my 95 tahoe only had 3 they were minor I have 250,000+ miles it hit the 250 mark a couple months ago. she runs great. in the spring I'm getting a new truck but I'm going down south somewhere& finding a nice low miles pre 99 model. my wifes tryin to talk me into gettin newer one but ive heard too many bad story's
Chris Sindone there's a lot more people buying trucks nowadays. They HAVE gone down in reliability but overall, they're about the same. My leather seats still look new and my truck is almost 8 years old.
i have 330k on my 94. yesterday it started making a rattling sound around 1700 rpm. it did this for a few days about a year ago and went away. i’m hoping it’s just the manifold cover because i know for a fact that it does rattle pretty loud. oil pressure and everything is fine so i’m going to tighten it down and hope it goes away. it sounds like a fan hitting something metal that’s the best way i can describe it. and just for the record that’s not what it is i’ve checked haha. also the sound isn’t heard in park or neutral so i’m assuming it wouldn’t be a knock of any kind? i usually do all my own work but i haven’t had to anything this in depth before so any insight would be appreciated.
I've spent $1000 as well buying parts I don't need. Major thanks for sharing this video! I was actually getting ready to buy another part to see if that would fix it. Strange how mechanics can't figure this out.
THANKS FOR THE VID.. I HAVE A 2001 YUKON I TOOK IT TO GMC DEALERSHIP TO GET A DIAGNOSTICS AND THEY SAID IT WAS TIE ROD.. I TOLD THEM IT WAS COMING FROM THE BACK.. THEY TOLD ME "THE BACK IS FINE".. SO I JACKED IT UP TOOK OFF MY E BRAKE ON MY DRIVER SIDE AND HAVEN'T HEARD THE SOUND SINCE THEN.. THANKS AGAIN
I got a 04 GMC Sierra that’s been doin this for about a year now eventually I just gave up and figured if it tears up on me I’ll know what it is then lmao but this video has helped a ton because now I KNOW what I’m needin to fix
I shit you not I just purchased a Yukon XL that was making this noise. Got it on a deal and first initial thought a driveshaft or differential issue, my second thought, it’s got to be the transfer case or it’s got to be an E brake issue. But thanks to your video and audio, I’ve pin pointed my issue. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
OMG!! Thank You!! You just saved us a whole lot of time and money, your video saved us... (same exact noise and when we heard your truck we said "thats it!") So sorry you went through all that.
Just got my new 1500 and have been having this same sound and at the same location only happens when I hit a bump and was wondering what it the world it could be and I’m so glad I found your video this will save me months of time and lots of money appreciate people like you god bless brother
Sweet Maria. My 2003 Trailblazer is making the exact same noise. I thought it was the muffler. Thanks for making this video and saving me a bunch of money on stuff I don't need to fix. Sorry your experience was not as easy as mine. Thanks again.
My GF's 4Runner had a similar sound but being that my Tacoma and her 4Runner have the same identical brakes I knew exactly what it was. The disc brake pad spring retainer clip wasn't installed correctly. We were on a fishing trip when it started making noise so I jacked up the left front wheel, crawled under the car, removed the pads and popped the clip back in correctly. As an additional FYI, my Chevy Express van started having a clunking, rattling sound only when I put it in gear. It didn't matter if the engine was hot or cold. I took it to my friend's transmission shop thinking something was wrong with the transmission. He told me it was the catalytic converter. He was right! The inside of the converter was shot!
It helps when he put the van on a lift and while he popped it in and out of gear while engine running, his employee was under the van listening for the noise. Saved me a ton of money as most transmission shops would've probably charged me an arm and a leg and then some to work on something that didn't need attention. It pays to have friends in the business.
The Burb Billy Growing on you? you replaced so much in the effort to the $105 e brake solution that you are now keeping that truck into the 300k..."damnit!"
+The Burb Billy (The Burbbilly), have you done your follow up video/2017? Just curious your feelings now. I have a 2008 GMC Sierra crew cab/1500/5.3 L V-8. I bought her brand-new and have put all 228k mi on her. Before this truck I owned 8 other vehicles that I didn't care for, except I did like certain things about my 99 Sierra & my 99 mustang GT. anyways, my 08 sierraTx edition takes the cake👍🏻, the my kids and I call her "Lucy", she has kept us safe through a few accidents 2 of them which were serious. Being sideswiped while traveling 65 mph & had to replace the tire, wheel, and back axle., The at fault vehicle was totaled and the driver injured , & fortunately we were all fine! & another time, we were rear ended, the other vehicle was traveling a decent rate of speed and it totaled their minivan not a scratch on my Lucy, myself or most importantly my kids. I LOVE DRIVING THIS TRUCK. It's just now starting to have a issues, list started @ 220k.
MISSION SAVE LUCY🙏🏼.Opinions? Anyways I've had no problems up until 220k miles& & Im trying to decide whether to keep her or not? shes paid for and for a single mother that's what I need. Lucy's check engine light will not go off. Truck shakes between 40 mph - 55 mph. Recently, very noisy with slightest bumps,, steering "loose"? The tire shop says that she's a lost cause, claiming bad rear differential & the transmission is going out.. I am not in agreement there. In the last few days my dad and I have replaced the brake switch (fixed my cruise control/doors locking and unlocking/ect). Next we cleaned the throttle body sensor we have already replaced it about a year ago. We also found that the struts/bushings were super loose, so we replaced and tighten those. The transmission fluid was too low. So we added a quart of fluid. Waiting to see how much all this helps. But I really want to do all I can to save this truck. Any advice or opinions are welcome. Appreciate it!!
Lindsay, thanks for the post/question. I'm not a mechanic but I have had this truck for a while now and have learned a few things along the way. First, the dash clusters suck. period. Some people report bad transmissions or weak trannys, I have not had that happen yet. I'm in a similar situation to you now, I can look to buy a new vehicle or keep my "trusty rusty". When I look at the cost of a new car/truck and what the payments will be, my "trusty rusty" looks like it may be in my life for a bit while more :-) One of my brothers is a motor head and he loves the 5.3 that we have in our trucks. I have to say I love mine as well. I am well over 200000 and I have a tick but I'm blaming that on me. I used a semi synthetic motor oil and pushed the changes out to 5000 miles per the shop recommendation and never should have done that, found sludge when I change the oil. It's a tough call when you're looking at a new car purchase because of the cost vs what may happen to "Lucy" and what that may cost you. I feel that these motors will go past 300000 so if I get this tick resolved I am planning on getting my A/C replaced and holding on to mine. Hope this helps and I really like the idea of an updated 2017 video to cover some of the other things I've dealt with how I feel about these trucks. Thanks again for the post and for being a viewer, take care.
I had the same issue. I looked at my transmission fluid and it was down a quart I put the cord in noise one away. Go figure, be careful when you talk to people saying they same thing no things they don't they just show you're everything and I do all the work on my truck so I kinda listen to him but I don't listen to anybody. I just go through this commands step-by-step by step-by-step. Do the same. My friend, good luck with your truck.
I'm having the same problem with my gmc yukon. I checked with few mechanics and they said to replace the gear box which is in thousands. Whats the actual problem? the breaks, bearings or what else. If i know the problem i can explain it to the mechanic and get it fixed. Thanks
I had an 03 Silverado it did the same thing. The shop I usually go to nailed down to my emergency brake (which is on the rear). They removed it and said a new one is $300ish. I never replaced it.
I have a 2009 Silverado 1500 and it’s doing the exact same thing specially when I make a almost full stop and release the brake to resume my speed and it almost feel like the truck will go into a locking mode or something. Thank you for the video, I subscribed to your channel for more tips. 👍🏼
I have 2001 Chevy Silverado LS has exact same thing happen after I used Emergency Breaks Thanks for making this video and I am sorry you had go through all that rip off and trouble honest people are far and few to find now days
put your back on jack strands and take the tyres off and then spin the wheel hub with your hand to see if thire is a grinding noes if so you may need a wheel bearing or a you duh shield could be rubbing on it them 2 thins are come but spin both sides and if it's just the one side it's just something symple and u want that or if no noes put your lug nuts on as far as they go.. not with the tyre on the truck if they can snug them up to the brake drums that's just so they stay in place or they dont come off And start your truck up and put it in drive then give it some gas about whare u hear it the most the. lison and if u here it lay nex to it and u can here whare it's comeing from .. I did that to mine and it's coming from the drive shaft and it so you just need to replace the the York's or grease them up and it should stop
I was out in working in Marianna, in Jackson county Florida working hurricane debris clean up and there's truck shop there and he said he has done dozens of rear end work on all brands of Trucks because there pulling trailers, 4x4 , 35 tires or larger tires. Its those clutches , springs when you take a turn and best way to find out is do circle 8s in parking lot .
I have a Chevy Venture 2005. It was rattling in the rear. I found the emergency brake line mount that was welded to the rear axle casing had broke away at the weld and was hanging about 1/8" about the axle. It was beating against the axle casing with every small bump in the road. The mount was welded about midway between the rear wheels. When I heard your noise it reminded me of the same rattling sound. My cure was several wounds of electrical tape and no more rattle and the emergency brake still works.
Richie, thanks for the post/tip. Mine was the ebrake rusted out inside the wheel but the thing about this video is it's getting a lot of views and comments, the comments that are getting posted are from people just like you posting about their personal experiences with these trucks. You can't get better info than that if you own one of these. So thank you and I hope you have a great new year!
+Brian Miller Lol I probably could have made this into two videos...The last half of the video covers the noise and solution but you are right I did have a mechanic problem
my 1999 has a f**** t case so I only use 2wd. it does make the same sounds and my dad said it sounds like something loose in the tire or axel. could it be the same thing? and did your park break work still?
very apologetic, but unable to explain his stupidity. got my engine codes cleared for free but could have done that myself, and he fixed his mistakes for free as well. still not impressed. here i am a few months later and everything he fixed is falling apart.
Thank you for this. Yes, I still have a 2003 Silverado in 2018....lol It is making this exact noise. I haven't checked yet, but with your video I have hope..haha. My Silverado only has 68K on it, and no rust... looks new inside and out. But, It just started that noise... Thanks again.
Thank you for this video!! This video saved me money! I have a 2013 Chevy Suburban that had the same noise and my husband fixed the problem! My emergency brake was very loose! Keep sharing your videos and saving people money!! Very grateful!
I have the same noise on 99 silverado, it's driving me insane. I'm seeing allot of comments about e break so I guess I'll look into it tomorrow. thanks for the video.
I want to tell you thanks. This video really helped , I was baffeled. On want it was I couldn’t find the problem was getting ready to take it to a shop. But instead I fixed emergency brake today. And problem solved. Thanks again
God bless
benito lara I
Thank you
Sounds like you are on point i brought a used rear end about 2 months ago and im hearing this noise in between 20 to 40 mph. Didn't have this problem until after the replacement
Lol cracked 4 teeth on my 82😂😭🤦🏽♂️
HE CLEARLY stated the problem at the end if you cant read it was his emergency brakes....shut up you dont know shit.
Thank you so much for posting this!!!! The mechanic shops I went too quoted me $4k in repairs for this issue... After watching this video I told my mechanic to check the emergency brake and he was able to fix for under $50... You saved me thousands by posting your experience with this video. Thank u so much!!
Appreciate you telling me this, I’m glad it helped you out. I feel for what you must have gone through when they told you $4000 to fix it.
Shouldn't have watch this before bed now I will be troubleshooting it in my sleep LOL
+Auston Reynolds You're welcome Auston! Glad this video helped you out
Was your sound almost like a rattle, I’ve been dealing with this as well and it’s more when the right side axle is being flexed more and it’s at lower speeds. E brake does go to the floor so could be it.
@@trevorferguson8271 maybe its those old and loose leafsprings in the back ? ?
had same problem for months spent hours under truck after waching your video one hour and three cents worth of lock tite problem solved i can't thank you enough
Brother you are a Saint,
I just started having this problem on my Tahoe literally in the past hour.
Thank you for posting this video!
Wat year is ur tahoe,?.... and ended up being the problem?.... I have the same sound
The Burb Billy what was the problem. my 02 avalanche is doing the same thing..
Steve Davis same here buddy, I got the 496 big block, any news??
The Burb Billy hey so our Chevy Silverado 2000 Z71 Is making the exact same sounds as your truck what's up with it then we need to know what the problem was you didn't say it in the video
It was my emergency brake, parts rusted out and rattled around, this is covered at the end of the video. I know it was a longer video sorry about that, I was pissed off when I made it :-)
just saw this glad everything worked out
had my 04 1500 e brake adjusted at the cost of 340$ (needed new rotors I was told,) and had to take it back cause it still wasn't right. picked it up and was so pissed that it still wasn't right.
+J Bashor You're welcome, did you find the problem?
The Burb Billy What do I tell mechanic to fix first? we need our truck fixed and don't have the money to play guessing games.
J Bashor me to bro..i have an 05 tahoe.. exact same thing
my 2005 is doing the same thing so going to have the rear breaks done and is does it on or off the break it grinds
I have. 07 avalanche. It was rear differential. Worst grinding noise ever
I have a 2002 chevy Silverado same grinding noise ...going on now..same place as yours... A double thank You..!! For putting this on...I will need to wait for next pay check to fix...... it's a relief..like a
bull dozzer paving the way.....wow.we as American are supposed to help..thank You again..
I've been trying to locate where there sound has been coming from for a month or more, I'm checking the e brakes tomorrow!! Thanks for sharing 👍
Omg I chased this sound for 3 months today before work I was finally able to make it gone..... I can NOT thank you enough
I’m glad you got help from the video!
Had the exact same issue. You just saved me a lot of time, money and worrying.
Thank you for posting this. You rock sir!
YOU ROCK!!!
You are your best mechanic. Once you properly diagnose a problem...decide if you want to contract it out.
My truck literally just started making this noise thanks for the vid!!!
Glad to hear it and you're welcome
Adam Meyers I was thinking the same thing but now I'm just gonna tell them to look at that first
Your truck was not the problem , the technicians looking at it failed, the folks who found your e-brake solution are the hero today... always research to find a reliable repair shop
Most of these mechanic's don't know there ass from a hole in the ground. Their parts changer's.
Preachin to the choir. :-) lol Thanks for the post
bser3973 well blame that on the manufacturer's for starving their technicians with ridiculously low warranty labor times unfortunately there is very little reward financially for the hard-working technicians out there so being a parts changer is most beneficial financially.
and you would know would you ?? you are a mechanic ??, to be quite honest here the term now is automotive technician from all the diagnostics that a lot of us suffer through which we get paid little for. there is that much technology now that a lot of mechanics as you call them do not know everything and i would love to know the one true GOD mechanic that does i have been doing it for 25 years and i know a lot however each day i am still learning as it is that intense of a trade.
so if auto-technicians are getting it wrong gaurantee if you dont tell them they are wrong they wont change however we all make errors of judgement,
i recently told an owner of a buisness i rang him up after he diagnosed a car with a faulty head gasket on a car he told my customer now $4,000 to replace engine, i told him he was wrong and it was simply a coil pack , no sign of a head gasket failure at all, he did not like being told he was wrong as he was obvious some multi-millionare big franchise owner who thought he was the TOP dog,i have since replaced coil pack at a cost of $68 AUSTRALIAN
i run a humble mobile automotive buisness myself and i have out-stripped a lot of these brand name people to shreds on diagnostics, i actually put the time in and fully research un-paid on problems i come across, and i really hope one day that my self learning pays off, not wealthy from doing it thats for sure, the more research you do the better, a lot of automotive work where people come unstuck is they start over complicating the thinking of it when it is usually the simple answer that is the correct one
most glitzy workshops fall down on this though they work for money not problem solving and it is the same in every proffesion out there they work for money not because they should be applying their skills because that is what they do
bser3973 newer vehicles hav newer issues that mechanics miss.
Why is it so hard to find a trustworthy mechanic?
BC ElginTex Couldnt agree more!
BC ElginTex ive found its not a trust issue, its a level of knowledge issue. its a low paying job and people dont stick around long enough.
They want to flip a $50 job into a $500 job... as smoothly as they can!
honda civic is a trusty machine
My turn with the same frustration.. Thanks for helping me bypass the costly route to fixing the issue
Burb Billy thanks a lot for posting. You've helped many people including myself.
Thank you Vince, I'm glad it helped you out.
DAYUMMMMM..... Glad you finally found the fix. Should def find you some different mechanics
I just bought a 2008 avalanche and it makes the exact same noise... I will be checking the emergency breaks today. Thanks for the video you're awesome!!!
I've had the same problem just now finding your video save me a lot of time and headache
did it work out?
i have the same problem
Thanks for the post eric, appreciate the info/kind words
Thank you for sharing this with us, I have a terrible noise and I thought it could be the transfer case. I have been told my emergency brakes did need replace a while ago, so I’m checking that first now. Thanks for the tip.
did it work out? i got the same issue
yes inspect your shocks and the brakes
Dam after all those shops eventually you came across a honest mechanic
oh man that's loud. I'd have a heart attack if I heard that from my chevy. well thankfully now I know what the potential problem could be, thank you for the video.
+Kevin Pazos You're welcome Kevin. FYI if you're a DIY'er most of my channel videos are DIY based.
my 2014 Chevy is doing this same sound. I too have gotten many of the same "it could be" answers! Thank you My E break will be checked this weekend. I really hope that's what it is because I cant afford anymore down time or shop fees
Obviously you've been had... By many mechanics, it's a shame that mechanics as such, give the honest, hard working ones a bad name.
At 5:57 it looks like the rattle is coming from your leapsprings hitting against itself after you get to a certain speed.
That's what I was thinking
Moral of the story- a great mechanic is worth their weight in gold. Glad you got it figured it out
your problem is that its built after 2000. for some reason after 1999 model yr they have lots& lots of recalls. my 95 tahoe only had 3 they were minor I have 250,000+ miles it hit the 250 mark a couple months ago. she runs great. in the spring I'm getting a new truck but I'm going down south somewhere& finding a nice low miles pre 99 model. my wifes tryin to talk me into gettin newer one but ive heard too many bad story's
Chris Sindone there's a lot more people buying trucks nowadays. They HAVE gone down in reliability but overall, they're about the same. My leather seats still look new and my truck is almost 8 years old.
Chris Sindone I have 93 Silverado 4x4 virtually everything stock never have a problem with it I'm pushing up to 270,000
i have 330k on my 94. yesterday it started making a rattling sound around 1700 rpm. it did this for a few days about a year ago and went away. i’m hoping it’s just the manifold cover because i know for a fact that it does rattle pretty loud. oil pressure and everything is fine so i’m going to tighten it down and hope it goes away. it sounds like a fan hitting something metal that’s the best way i can describe it. and just for the record that’s not what it is i’ve checked haha. also the sound isn’t heard in park or neutral so i’m assuming it wouldn’t be a knock of any kind? i usually do all my own work but i haven’t had to anything this in depth before so any insight would be appreciated.
The mechanic that actually figured it out, would be my new mechanic.
What I like about the internet, calling people or companies for their crap!
I've spent $1000 as well buying parts I don't need. Major thanks for sharing this video! I was actually getting ready to buy another part to see if that would fix it. Strange how mechanics can't figure this out.
That sounds like the emergency brakes inside the rotors on the rear end
Ok super mechanic. He literally said that at the end of the video.
Awesome! This is the reason I did the video. Really glad to hear it helped you out.
Glad you got it fixed. That sound was bad.
I got a 04 GMC Sierra that’s been doin this for about a year now eventually I just gave up and figured if it tears up on me I’ll know what it is then lmao but this video has helped a ton because now I KNOW what I’m needin to fix
Car mechanics are like doctors.. usually misdiagnose and take your money.
Appreciate comments like this! I’m glad to hear the vid helped you out
Looks/sounds like the leaf springs. Had same problem with my truck and got the leaf springs changed out for free.
My springs have a rattle but this ended up being the e brake rusted out
OMG!! Thank You!! You just saved us a whole lot of time and money, your video saved us... (same exact noise and when we heard your truck we said "thats it!") So sorry you went through all that.
took me 2 seconds to hear loose brake pads , I have heard them so bad sounds like front bumper is about fall off.
Just got my new 1500 and have been having this same sound and at the same location only happens when I hit a bump and was wondering what it the world it could be and I’m so glad I found your video this will save me months of time and lots of money appreciate people like you god bless brother
Check e brake shoes mine was doing same thing removed and sound was gone
Sweet Maria. My 2003 Trailblazer is making the exact same noise. I thought it was the muffler. Thanks for making this video and saving me a bunch of money on stuff I don't need to fix. Sorry your experience was not as easy as mine. Thanks again.
You're welcome Aaron, I'm glad the video helped you out.
at the 6 min mark. the leaf spring shakes alot
Thanks for the post, did not know the catalytic converter could cause that
It helps when he put the van on a lift and while he popped it in and out of gear while engine running, his employee was under the van listening for the noise. Saved me a ton of money as most transmission shops would've probably charged me an arm and a leg and then some to work on something that didn't need attention. It pays to have friends in the business.
Since you figured out the problem do you like your GM Truck again?
The Burb Billy That's great to hear the truck is still serving you well. Ya those are things I would expect as mileage gets up there.
The Burb Billy
Growing on you?
you replaced so much in the effort to the $105 e brake solution that you are now keeping that truck into the 300k..."damnit!"
When I look at the cost of a new car/truck and what the payments will be, my "trusty rusty" looks like it may be in my life for a bit while more :-)
One of my brothers is a motor head and he loves the 5.3 that we have in our trucks.
Pepe, it's not letting me reply to your comment. My problem was the rear brakes, hope they find yours. Take care
I'm having the same problem with my gmc yukon. I checked with few mechanics and they said to replace the gear box which is in thousands.
Whats the actual problem? the breaks, bearings or what else. If i know the problem i can explain it to the mechanic and get it fixed. Thanks
I think it's ur brakes or shocks
Brakes....:-)
The Burb Billy was it really your breaks I have the same problem
I had an 03 Silverado it did the same thing. The shop I usually go to nailed down to my emergency brake (which is on the rear). They removed it and said a new one is $300ish. I never replaced it.
I have a 2009 Silverado 1500 and it’s doing the exact same thing specially when I make a almost full stop and release the brake to resume my speed and it almost feel like the truck will go into a locking mode or something. Thank you for the video, I subscribed to your channel for more tips. 👍🏼
That would be your rear emergency brakes take your tire off take the caliper and the road or off and I bet you find your problem
I have 2001 Chevy Silverado LS has exact same thing happen after I used Emergency Breaks
Thanks for making this video and I am sorry you had go through all that rip off and trouble honest people are far and few to find now days
put your back on jack strands and take the tyres off and then spin the wheel hub with your hand to see if thire is a grinding noes if so you may need a wheel bearing or a you duh shield could be rubbing on it them 2 thins are come but spin both sides and if it's just the one side it's just something symple and u want that or if no noes put your lug nuts on as far as they go.. not with the tyre on the truck if they can snug them up to the brake drums that's just so they stay in place or they dont come off And start your truck up and put it in drive then give it some gas about whare u hear it the most the. lison and if u here it lay nex to it and u can here whare it's comeing from ..
Its those clutches , springs when you take a turn and best way to find out is do circle 8s in parking lot .
that's your leaf spring buddy
Blake Williams had that same noise it definitely sounds like there is a possible crack in one of ur leafs
It was his emergency brake, which had broken apart.
I have to agree with Blake. I'd check the leaf spring bushings, and make sure the leafs are secured together as they should be.
Is no one paying attention
How can it even be a fucking leaf spring you tool !!
So thank you and I hope you have a great new year!
sounds like a mechanic problem not a truck problem.....
+Brian Miller Lol I probably could have made this into two videos...The last half of the video covers the noise and solution
but you are right I did have a mechanic problem
Bearings in the hub are fucked. I diagnosed mine in 5 mins. No lift no jack. Just real common sense and know how.
ur a g for putting the time stamp in the title 😩 i was trying to show my dad the noise but i couldn’t describe it thank you lol
my 1999 has a f**** t case so I only use 2wd.
it does make the same sounds and my dad said it sounds like something loose in the tire or axel. could it be the same thing? and did your park break work still?
also, after an idiot mechanic forgetting the c clip, my drive shaft fell out and scraped the pavement going about 60 after leaving the shop.
very apologetic, but unable to explain his stupidity. got my engine codes cleared for free but could have done that myself, and he fixed his mistakes for free as well. still not impressed. here i am a few months later and everything he fixed is falling apart.
So helpful just saved my wallet! Thanks you!
Thank you. This is exactly what our sound was. Saved us a ton in diagnosing it. Appreciate it.
Thank you for this video!! This video saved me money! I have a 2013 Chevy Suburban that had the same noise and my husband fixed the problem! My emergency brake was very loose! Keep sharing your videos and saving people money!! Very grateful!
you know when its u-joints when switching to drive an reverse sitting still .if it gos kaaa-klink all loud an hard then they bad
I have the same noise on 99 silverado, it's driving me insane. I'm seeing allot of comments about e break so I guess I'll look into it tomorrow. thanks for the video.
Yes start with the ebrake parts rust out and rattle around if not that then you can move on to the more expensive things
turns out mines a bad axel in the back passenger. it moves in and out a good 1/2 inch. No Boino!
I was gonna say,I had a different noise and come to find out the ebrake was dragging inside the drum...and my 04 has a weird ass E Brake.
Did it sound like ur like brakes where stuck?
Almost like a slight grinding noise?
I want to tell you thanks. This video really helped , I was baffeled. On want it was I couldn’t find the problem was getting ready to take it to a shop. But instead I fixed emergency brake today. And problem solved. Thanks again
fucking awesome video bud
