I know this was years ago, but I have to say it's so interesting to see alternative views on the ending. I myself see the evil ending as being the better choice to make if we're looking at it without hindsight of the outcome. With good, there's no guarantee the plague will be cured, Wolfe didn't tell cole that it'd kill all conduits, just that it'd kill the beast. What else was he not telling him? That would leave no conduits to save the world, with humanity dying off. Meanwhile, the evil ending gives a guarantee that at least some will survive. The population will drop a lot, yes, but that is far better than the fair possibility that the RFI will do nothing good. Of course, with hindsight we know the good ending is the better one to take but it's an interesting thought.
Very good points! In a way, Wolfe pretty much lied to Cole and everybody else about what the RFI was capable of. Plus you're also right about the fact that Wolfe himself can't guarantee that the RFI will wipe out the Plague. Has he done other trials, etc? And yeah, from Evil Cole's perspective, the Evil Ending is a necessary evil in order to ensure humanity keeps living on.
Mhm! I think arguably it makes sense for good cole to even consider taking what's considered the more evil route for the betterment of humanity as a whole.
Throwing a car does much more damage than the grenades or the megawatthamer. It's more useful against enemies like helicopters or that big swam monster that you need to hit in the mouth, who are pretty hard to hit with multiple grenades or rockets.
When i was a kid i played the shit outta infamous 1 and 2 and i loved it to the point cole was on the same level as mainstream as fuck superheroes and seeing him die for the greater good of saving the world of a plague of basically acute radiation poisoning of 9000 msv made me fucking cry back then especially since the alternative was killing his best friend and becoming what he was meant to destroy
Cole definitely has the attitude, abilities, and appearance of a mainstream superhero! I also like how, I dunno, ordinary he looked. He didn't have a fancy costume- just street clothes. That ending broke my heart when I first saw it at 12 years old. It was the first time I got to see a protagonist die and it shattered my expectation that the hero should live no matter what.
Personally I play good in the first game but try to save Trish instead of the doctors. I think this starts a breakdown where he finally goes over the edge after finding out he's Kessler. So I start with good karma in 2 and slowly go towards the beast ending through brutal effectiveness Kessler got the killed he wanted but in doing so turned that man into the beast.
Yeah when I played Infamous 1, I chose to save Trish first because I thought that that'd be the only thing going through Cole's mind because he's been through so much with her. What makes it hurt more is that the relationship between the two was JUST repaired.
Man it always bugged me that Cole would give Zeke an inch of trust after the events of infamous 1. He definitely steps up and comes into his own more here in the sequel, but he's still a little sleazy, using his relationship with Cole to pick up chicks and stuff.
Dude was ready to kill thousands of more people and ruin more lives just because he was jealous of Cole. Thank goodness the comics exist or else the relationship being repaired between Cole and Zeke would've been completely baffling (granted, not a lot of people even got their hands on those comics). Not only that, but I didn't cover it in this vid, but Cole gets slightly concerned about Zeke when he shows up in that Militia armor too, saying that he still doesn't trust him after the events of Empire City.
You're right, its been a while since I played. I forgot that Cole was actually nervous when Zeke joined the militia. I always knew there were comics and I vaguely remember scrolling through one online. Maybe I should go back and play the first 2 these games are pretty special
Yeah the comics add a lot of closure for what happens at the end of the first game because the the endings for both Karma paths were pretty lackluster. Lots of crazy stuff happens in those comics that I won't spoil too.
your take on the "evil" ending I think is pretty basic. No choice is better then the other. Your committing genocide either way. So many factors to take into account if you were in Cole's shoes. All you know about the RFI when you're making your choice is that it'll kill conduits, Zeke didn't make any mention of feeling better as it was killing them the first time Cole tried it. So basically you're asking the man not only to kill himself but hundreds of thousands, even millions of people, to save what quite possibly is the most stupid and arrogant sentient race to exist (in general terms anyway). A race by the way, that is just as destructive on their own with the weapons they make. Now, is Cole going to choose to save humans just so he doesn't have to live with the choice afterwards? Does he do it for Zeke? His parents, of which he doesn't have a good relationship with? He's also only basing this choice off of the faith of a human, humans whom up until now have shown nothing but fear for his kind (mostly), is trying to save the world from the plague and not just killing off Conduits because they fear them. If he goes the other route, why does he do it? I'm glad the game didn't depict him as a giant evil asshole in that ending and rather depicted him as reluctantly doing it because he knows he'll have to live with the choice of not just genociding humanity, but killing his brother. This method is the only one he knows for sure eliminates the plague, but at a cost. In his mind, there is a high possibility that the RFI was made to just eliminate the danger of conduits because even if you pick a good ending in the first game Cole is the only "Good" guy conduit so far. All the others are mad with power and paranoia. The other things to take into account is all the corruption in government and the broken system we live in will no longer exist because all of it would be torn down to make the new world. In the new world, everybody has super powers so yeah that would be tough to deal with but at the same time we can't assume we know for sure how any of that would play out. I dunno, I think both decisions suck and if all the fanfic about cole ending up surviving the choice to kill all the conduits then I'd think either way he'd feel shitty about his choice and all the lives lost. Besides, none of this would have been a problem if Kessler hadn't meddled with the time line. Seriously, in his memories there was no mention of a plague or anything like that, despite call stating "Kessler seized control of the First Sons and accelerated the development of the ray sphere." So am I to understand that Kessler had the same problem with the plague in the future but kept it from Cole? Honestly, as far as I can tell despite Cole being quite possibly one of the most powerful Prime conduits, probably only second to John, he was the one who got the short end of the stick in this whole thing. The dude's not necessarily a hero but it could be easily construed that way by either side that survived because of him. Plus, I'm sure there would be some humans who would lose conduit lovers relatives friends etc that would feel the same way about the conduits who have lost their human equivalents in the opposite choice. There is no driving anything home here.
Yeah it's a lose-lose in the end. Conduits being extinct means no more plague, but millions still die. However, the Plague was already claiming more lives than the RFI had taken by the end of the game and it was moving westward, so something had to be done about it before it was too late. I appreciate your point of view. I never really thought about the good ending like that.
Look up zivalines character study on Cole it's a fantastic video that goes more in depth on this. Also the original planned Canon ending was the beast ending as it made the most sense for Cole to do according to the devs and was the only ending that story wise could have possibly continued since all conduits die in the RFI ending. The only reason the devs changed their plan was because of player data showing most players got the trophy for the RFI ending.
Dates? This video was produced throughout the spring and summer of 2021, so any mention of a certain number of years, and the production year should be taken into account.
