I like how everyone puts down cheap cars as "Junk" when they are pretty good cars if properly maintained. A friend of mine has close to 240,000 miles on his Escort that has the same drive train. They are not built like Hondas or Toyotas but they are still good cars if properly maintained.
This video was requested from a few Tempo people months ago, but I've been either too busy or too lazy to put it up until now. And ya I'm not a Tempo fan either. My aunt had one from new in 1991 till 1998. I never really liked it, but some people do and thats why I posted this video
I've gotta wonder how popular airbag equipped Tempos were each year it was offered. Likely to be more popular in the 90s than those produced in the mid to late 80s. I find it strange that it was still optional in 1994 and not standard like in most competitors.
After watching both parts, if it was the early 90's I would want a Tempo lol. Although, as a 90's kid I did like styling of these. My childhood friend's mom had the Mercury version.
I remeber my dad trying to talk me into buying a tempo in 1990. I was looking for my first new car when I started college. I opted for a 1990 honda civic. No stupid "preferred equipment packages." My civic LX had more equipment standard than the tempo, Folding rear seat,AC,power everything, floormats,Stereo with cassete. and( gasp) a rear defrost even on the basic DX model was standard. American cars in the 80's and 90's just could'nt compete with the foreign brands,in design and reliability.
And also pay thousands more in dealer gouging fees. Bought a 1990 Tempo GL for thousands less, a larger body and looking back great reliability and over 180k miles over 22 years with no major repairs other than mairbence and an ac compressor. And it didn't rust out like Hondas often do.🤣
They might not be the best looking car on the road, but they are pretty reliable and that 2.3 HSC engine is pretty strong. I owned a Topaz XR-5, 2 door. It had great MPG and didnt look to bad. I had no clue u can get one in AWD, i wouldnt mind finding one now and take it off road like they said not to!!! LOL
I own a 1990 AWD tempo with 63,000 miles. the seats are more comfortable that the vw Passat I had. its black with a gray interior and people have asked it its a Volvo! they think its a 2003 car. the interior etc is very good. I know. I own one !
Ooooohhhh, that GL model with Preferred Equipment Package 226A is sexxxyyyyyy, not to mention those fantastic deluxe wheel covers and floor mats!!!!!!! Reclining bucket seats too, someone pinch me LOL
I didn't like the look of many 90s cars, except I loved my Lincoln Mark VII and Mark VIII's. I'd drive both now if I could. I still have the 95 Mark VIII but it's been dead since 2018 and I just can't part with it. 😭
They also mentioned that the Beretta line would receive a new convertible model, which I wish GM had made! I've seen pics and that Beretta convertible looked awesome, and would have been a perfect competitor to the LeBaron (which is also a great car..we've got one). It was much better looking than the Cavalier convertible. And if they had produced a Beretta it would have been a great compliment to my bro's 1990 Beretta GTZ in our driveway
I will go for those floormats, are these safe in the tumbledryer after washing off the vommit? And if i want a blackout sporty look, is this DIY because of buying that GLS (General Life Sucks) will set me back again...i think a bit of gasoline and a lighter gives me a TOTAL blackout look on the Tempo for less than a buck!!
soo what what and how were you able to use the all wheel drive??? my understanding is that it must not be used on dry road surfaces or off road so my guess is , rainy weather or uphill roads. because the engine also did 100 hp
It's probably a part - time 4wd system, with no center differential...driving too long or fast, on dry pavement, will cause binding in the drive train and damage...
I have a real clean 89 gl tempo blue bet that odmoter has turned over atlest 3 times buy now just keep the car maintained and you will have no worries .city i get 18miles hwy27 real happy with the car .....
Too bad they didn't give this car a decent automatic transmission! It was a decent machine but the power train was soo soo. Not unreliable, just unrefined.
@Jonathan-mp7xg exactly, the 5 speed was lovely. And they were very strong engines. That automatic transmission robbed it. I had three of these cars as a kid. 88, 90, 91 After my last tempo I got a 92 Honda Accord EX
My 1993 had a factory AM/FM Cassette/6 disc changer, Auto, PS/PB Tilt CC, 3.0L V-6 Rear Defrost, Alloy Wheels, PW/PL P. Mirrors and Power Drivers seat. Mine was an LX and lasted for three years no problems and sold it to a friend and he drove it 8 years
Well my son in law and his brother took 94 all wheel out our camp road. Damn near wrecked it,but got back homee. That was it's last burn down the road, rear shock towers collapsed. In fact the front bumper cover is still out there, the road was graded for logging trucks. The cover is poking out of a dirt pile along the road. Merry Christmas, 2019 all 🙏🎄
its not a true All wheel drive, its 4 wheel drive which is why you dont drive in on dry pavement . You dont drive a chevy etc truck in 4 wheel on dry pavement, so you dont do so in a tempo with all/ 4 wheel drive. its not a junk design, its how not to drive any 4 wheel drive.

Cool, I had a 1988 white sedan with blue interior and a 1986 grey with a burgandy interior 😀

Drove a Dodge Spirit ES turbo in 97/98. I loved it. Perfect for highschool parking lot burnouts

I had a 1993 Ford Tempo its was vey reliable with the 3.0Lv-6 all power and paid 800.00 for it drove it three years and sold it for 2850.00.
damn if only they made a SHO version of this car.

HOLY FUCK! STANDARD FLOOR MATS! THIS IS A MUST BUY!
"New for 1990, floor mats are now standard"
What a luxury!

I had no clue u can get one in AWD, i wouldnt mind finding one now and take it off road like they said not to!!! LOL
My 1st car I got one for $3k with $52,000 miles. It looked new. All the burgundy in it was blinding but it was mine.
I used to take this car off routing in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey in high school. One diesel vehicle.

Cool :) I owned a 1988 White 4 dr Ford Tempo and a Grey 1986 4 dr Ford Tempo, I enjoyed both of them, but had bad auto transmissions .

I’ve had my 1993 Mark VIII since 2009. 77K miles and only comes out in summer
Can't believe A/C was an option back in 1990. What Ford couldn't give ALL their 1990's Tempo's standard A/C.

But how much did the Civic cost?
What was the name of that package again?? 227B??

Ford Tempo and Mercury Topaz were "dull" in terms of quality. They looked modern on the outside, but the interior sure looked and felt cheap.
soo what what and how were you able to use the all wheel drive??? my understanding is that it must not be used on dry road surfaces or off road so my guess is , rainy weather or uphill roads. because the engine also did 100 hp
at 3:00 i laughed so hard at his nerdy voice hahahah
I laughed at the options you have to control it. Either on or off. 🤣
2.5 Turbo For the win also the corsica for the win:)
So 4:00 when do I use the, “ 4wd “ option?! If I’m not supposed to use it on dry or off road. Hmmm. ?! Oh, snow ❄️ rain 🌧 maybe?!
It's probably a part - time 4wd system, with no center differential...driving too long or fast, on dry pavement, will cause binding in the drive train and damage...
I swear the Tempo was/is a better car than that Contour.
Cost about 2k less, too!
Hey...do you still have the Honda today? and did you Look at any other cheap new car in 90? Like other fords....Hyundai?....Toyota? Chrysler?
looks like the Mercury Topaz my buddy has i ride in it all the time it is the 2 door
I like how they don't give the cars with manual transmissions air bags.
I don't understand why you are only supposed to put the AWD on during wet road conditions. Why would it cause damage?
When i was 5 my neighor got one these new, it had problems within a year
I have a real clean 89 gl tempo blue bet that odmoter has turned over atlest 3 times buy now just keep the car maintained and you will have no worries .city i get 18miles hwy27 real happy with the car .....

After my last tempo I got a 92 Honda Accord EX
I never knew that black windows made a car sporty.
No mention of the B12 Nissan Sentra? I drive one.
If you thought floor mats were cool, Part 1 said they were including safety glass!
Yes, yes it is.
Agreed!
And lol, you look at the competion part of the video, and they make the Tempo look bad. "Sundance, optional turbo!"
Uh, Chevy never had a 3.2L v6
I know who you're talking about, he has an AWD but the system is fucked so it was converted to FWD.
You think its funny that floor mats are standard? They are STILL to this day not standard on any Toyota. haha
Does it have AM and FM and Cassette???
My 1993 had a factory AM/FM Cassette/6 disc changer, Auto, PS/PB Tilt CC, 3.0L V-6 Rear Defrost, Alloy Wheels, PW/PL P. Mirrors and Power Drivers seat. Mine was an LX and lasted for three years no problems and sold it to a friend and he drove it 8 years
Guy on youtube has one, its really run down, but maybe he would sell it to you.
Dont sound so excited Pete....
"The clincher - a test drive in a Tempo" WTF are you kidding me?? That would be the clincher to buy something else. These things were a POS.
Remember to explain that you can't off road in a tempo lol

why cant 4wd go offroad on this car
Isn't that the chick from the "sexual harassment" videos?

lol never activate on dry roads or the system breaks. Nows that technology folks.
I dunno about it being "one of the few cars available with all wheel drive" - what about all the Audi range, and Subarus.
Cheap, disposable transportation.
Good vid, not saying the vid was bad, but the Tempo was a POS. I'm a ford guy, but not a fan of this one
Turbo Mopar > Tempo
Worst car I have ever owned. I switched to Japaneese cars after that and never looked back.
