Angus is technically way more proficient as a guitarist than his playing with AC/DC would lead you to believe. He also has tremendous hand strength and stamina - both in his hands and body in general!
@@aus-rider I'm a huge fan of both he and Angus so I don't need much convincing. Malcolm was a walking sound machine. Oh, not to shabby in the songwriting department as well. I like the new album but it's glaringly obvious its missing two huge parts without Malcolm. As it probably should be.
another thing, he's solos ain't shreddy or has a long runs filled with notes his solos filled with double stops, bends, 2 notes chords (5 chords) with a fast bluesy approach
For me two "fathers" of Angus phrasing and tone are Paul Kosoff for vibrato and Alvin Lee for fast blues and pentathonic licks. If you listen "I'm going home " of Ten Years After in Woodstock, tone and solos are very similar at early Angus.
I've been so stuck on SRV since i was a kid and have just recently gotten into AC/DC at 32 Years Old! Thanks Ross! i'm having a good time jamming out with Angus n the Boys
Actually, he rarely bends the G string down. His unique vibrato sound comes due to the fact that he has very small hands, making him use his pinky a lot, like, all the time, whenever he can he does it, giving him the strength of the full arm into the hand, into the string. I'll agree on you saying that his sound is his vibrato. It's more than unique ! Thanks for sharing :)
@@jzmacfish everybody is a critic these days. I understood you. I heard a guy give a tutorial showing Malcolm finger picking Thunderstruck and couldn't believe it.
Great video. Thanks... Rig Rundown covered AC/DC and all cabs on stage are ON... yep, ON. Crazy right? You are right on about the key to sounding like Angus is his vibrato...
I've been playing the solo for the last 5 days and it's exactly this lick that's giving me the most trouble! I've watched your video in slow-mo like 5-6 times and I'm gonna give it a try again tonight. Oh and great job!
NIce, love Angus's playing with a tone very reminiscent of Paul Kossof, very similar wide open vibrato. Do a Kossof lesson too? - I heard Alright Now today on the radio and the guitar tone in the lead break is almost like a Hammond organ (Lesley cabinet??), very gutsy.
Ross hits on the key here. Think of Brad Pitt saying "to be or not to be, that is the Question" followed by Hilary Clinton saying the same. Words are the same. Language, and generally pronunciation are same but each one has a different intonation and sound. Licks, scales and notes are the language and words. Vibrato and picking, speed and style of hammer and pull off are the character and accent. Vibrato is sooo important.
Thunderstruck is the best example for practicing alternative picking or hammer pull off. But i would prefer alternative picking. And his wild vibrato it's really distinctive. Yeah he's a legend and his fellow member too. Rip Malcolm
Just great! Any chance you can make a video about hard rock blues licks? For example some of eddie van halen's and slash's lick, that would be amazing!! =)
I have feeling of angus sound that he does not use any overdrive pedals and is straight from the amp, which is a proof that direct valve based overdrive is best sounding and most warm it sounds almost like a violin ! He have most beautiful rock lead sound//
@Bad Boys Boogie He used MesaBoogies ONLY in the 90's. Thats why in that time he sounds with more gain than usual, just look live at donington isolated tracks.
@Bad Boys Boogie He usually uses Marshall Super Leads and Marshall JTM50 in the studio. To be honest, i don't know what angus use in live but i know that he used Mesa Boggie cabins in the 90's. My bad for saying that he used Mesa Boggies, i was saying that he used Mesa Boggie cabins.
The biggest point for me is the AC/DC swing rhythm. If you lock on the swing hi-hat and feel the swing offbeat as accent when playing, your phrases will naturally sound angusy if you play over AC/DC tracks. Most people that I watch on youtube trying to attempt Angus solos play straight 8th notes on the offbeat, and that's not how he plays. If you listen closely, he doesn't add vibrato to that first bend you played imediatly. He bends and holds the note, and then adds vibrato on a swinged 8th offbeat.
I beg to differ: His cabs were all plugged in - he doesn't wear in ears - only one mic on one speaker. I doubt there will ever be anything to equal that sound.
Always Thought Angus Young and Jimmy Page had the best sounding Hard Rock Heavy Metal guitar sound and guitar playing of all time except for Eddie Van Halen.
Nope, all those cabs on stage are plugged in, Angus uses 9 x modified Marshall 100w Super Leads not plexi's. He doesn't use monitors and needs to hear his guitar wherever he is on stage there is an isolated cab under the stage that is mic'd and goes to front of house for the mix.
@Bad Boys Boogie yes you're right he didn't like love song but he admitted that they had wrote lots of song that they have not published and he's not been a very big fan of those songs.sorry for the confusion
The secret of the Shaffer... The rest is regular Marshall\SG And ask this cabinets are absolutely plugged in.... He use roughly ten 100watt head and a whole slew of cabinets... All plugged in for stage coverage.. No in ears...
Aww, now yer just showing off, Ross! I mean that intro to the video was impeccable! Ya wee bugger! You're too friggin brilliant of a guitar player to be true. ;-) Honestly, if anything ever happened to Angus I seriously would recommend YOU to take his place. You have exactly the same playing capability and more and you'd easily cut the gig. Interesting that the Young brothers are Scots and made their first fame in Australia where I live these days. The Aussies claim them as their own, of course. Having lived in both places and I remember Bon I always say they are definitely ours - Scots Wha Hae! Ha ha ha. Edinburgh?! Shit, I thought you might have been a Glasgow boy. Oh well, nobody's perfect. Ha ha ha ha. Oh and I noticed the wee bit of bum fluff yer growing on yer face. Yer still a baby faced wee bugger. Ha ha ha. ;-) All the best pal.
I have never met a single guitar player that wanted to play like Angus Beef or whatever his name is. You do a great job on your solo with it, but you lack an old shitty rattley bridge and that is where his real sound is coming from. You don't have that. Your sound sounds like Angus Beef playing new equipment from Guitar Center. (a music equipment store now bankrupt). For new equipment, you have to get the cheapest for it to sound good. That means junk guitars from China. Because of their overall shittyness, I can't make them sound incredible. I capture all that noise and use it as tone just like Anus Young. Oh I get it now. That is what the jews were going for when they named him. He did have a great sound, where you like the Young Anus or not.
Angus is technically way more proficient as a guitarist than his playing with AC/DC would lead you to believe. He also has tremendous hand strength and stamina - both in his hands and body in general!
@Ron Gillespie angus dont do drugs bud
@ethan Angus has alter ego, hes a gentleman irl but a schoolboy devil in stage

Lets not forgot Malcolm young as well for the overall sound. Great great great rhythm player
Hell yeah
Maybe the best. According to Keith Richards.

There's not many that have a soul, that don't like AC/DC and Angus Young. They're *FANTASTIC* at what they do!!
The best ever statement. I am doing a huge tribute show next April. 🫶🏻ACDC
Don’t forget the Schaefer wireless unit. It affects his compression and tone.
He has a distinctive pentatonic diddle, an unmistakable vibrato, and a sense of groove that would sooner warp time and space than miss a beat.

To clarify, he didn't say Angus bends the G down. He's using that as an example of what Angus' vibrato resembles. At 3:22 he says that.

@@jzmacfish everybody is a critic these days. I understood you. I heard a guy give a tutorial showing Malcolm finger picking Thunderstruck and couldn't believe it.
He doesn’t bend the G string, because that string on the SG Gibson always goes out of tune. I don’t know why Gibson hasn’t fixed this issue yet.
@@firpo81 not an actual issue... Just gotta learn how to set up a guitar properly. Lube the nut.

I just cant do the bend and pinky grab below the bend UGH i think my strings are too heavy
Do most people bend down on the string? I don't think I'd ever done a down bend or down vibrato in my life
Nice job Ross. It is the small details that make the difference.

Good suggestion Stuart, thanks!
I'd say Angus definitely got his vibrato style from Paul Kossoff of Free, who perfected it shortly before his death.
But Hillary Clinton says it completely differently: "To be or not to be depends on the kickback to the Clinton Foundation"

I don't find them anywhere I make them myself using Guitar Pro 7 software.

Hey Ross! Have you ever been to the States?
Yes I have been to Florida, NYC, Nashville and Memphis. I will be in the US for about five weeks this summer, spending most of that time in Nashville.
Always Thought Angus Young and Jimmy Page had the best sounding Hard Rock Heavy Metal guitar sound and guitar playing of all time except for Eddie Van Halen.
First you say his signature vibrato comes from pulling down and in the next sentence you say, you need to push up to get his sound..lol

You know you're listening to Zakk Wylde because there's a pinch harmonic every other note.
He plays with 4- 5 stacks ALL loaded. He blows up tubes all the time.
Indeed, they run the amps at 5-10% above rated line voltage which makes ‘em sing but cooks the tubes!
And he was a Jock !!
Oh aye.
Has anyone ever listened to AC/DC and not loved them?
Yes.believe it or not Angus didn't like quite a few of the songs

They played AC/DC to sharks in a huge aquarium. They loved it !
Howdy Ross.
Just wish you'd mentioned John Sykes instead of Zakk Wylde...
I know,opinions,opinions....
his cabs are plugged in on his side
Close bit not clean enough.
I still don‘t how Angus sounds clean but with that much sustain. I assume it has to be compression ...
Its because he uses huge stacks of tube amplifiers the tube starts vibrating at his massively loud volumes making it have light natural distortion
The radio receiver he uses also adds gain and compression at the front end. See Solo Dallas who has studied this in great depth.
Ya we get it.... you need to be angus to sound like angus
Yea AC/DC played at my high school, they were ok, we had a few better bands play at the time....
Step 1:Be Angus Young
A bit of hair and you already look 5 years older! Just like me, lmao. Looking sharp. And yeah, good content and stuff.
