    Thank you for explaining the difference. I bought a $99 dehydrator and was very disappointed with the look of the food after drying. Will get a job so I can get moving with my new gardening skills, and interest in food storage for short and long term. This is guided by the Holy Spirit so not sure what will be happening in the future to require these skills.

      Was Leary because when I did buy one it was used and it never seemed to work,
      Realized that I could probably put hard ware cloth over the racks in the stove and place the food on the hardware cloth at 119° and cook , I hadn't figured out the hours yet , can't afford the freeze dryer and with the arthritis can't string the green beans to make leather Birchers. I would recommend that anyone thinking about getting a freeze dryer should try a few freeze dried items and see if you like the taste and texture first. I find that freeze dried fruit is interesting as a snack but definitely not as tasty as fresh or canned. Freeze dried herbs are very good in cooking and keep a long time. However, I personally do not care for freeze dried vegetables; I much prefer fresh or dehydrated over the freeze dried veggies. I do have some #10 cans of freeze dried foods for long term emergency use, as they supposedly can keep their full vitamin value for 10 - 25 years. So, try the different options before you buy machines or preprepared items of any kind to make sure what will work best for you and your family. We all have different tastes, abilities, and priorities.

    Glad you are enjoying the freeze dryer! There is truly a huge difference between the quality of dehydrated and freeze-dried foods. I don't have the budget or the space, unfortunately. But I have been happy with the bulk foods I have purchased. I am using more freeze dried foods versus GMO produce that has very low nutrition. And am converting all my camping meals to home-packed freeze dried versus the expensive $10 to $15 store-bought junk! Thanks The Great Out There

What recipes do you use: onions, potatoes, tomatoes, squash, strawberries, beans, peas, etc. I saw that you have a few recipes on your blog, but having them by veggie would be amazing! How do you store extras? I'm worried about having an over abundance of food, and not knowing what to do with it.

    Freeze-drying was not first invented in 1906. It has been a traditional method of food preservation by the Quechua people for the last thousand years. The climate in the Andes just let you freeze-dry food outdoors, no problem.
    This is how “chuño” (freeze-dried potatoes) are made, a process which was documented by the Spanish colonizers in the 16th century.

    Would it be ok to use and store the dryer in our garage that can get down to 40 degree F?

      Typically the problem is it getting too hot, so I don't think so. I would check with the manufacturer to be certain.

    If you FD rosella can it be rehydrated for jam?

    • @GrowingInTheGarden
      @GrowingInTheGarden  Год назад

      Probably. My first choice would be fresh because then you're not processing it twice. You would have to add pectin because you wouldn't freeze dry the seed pods and that is what you boil for the pectin.

    I live in a small one bedroom apartment and I’m considering getting the small size and upgrading to the oil less pump. Do you think it would be too loud? Is it a disturbing sound or would you say more of a background noise. Is it the pump that is creating the sound or the dryer itself?

    • @trubyboo4072
      @trubyboo4072 2 года назад +1

      They both make noise. It's equivalent to fairly loud window unit ac. Hope that helps.

      62-67 decibels for the machines and a normal vacuum is around 70, for some perspective.

      My understanding is the oil free pump has more issues than a Premier pump. Other Utube presenters have said that

    Anybody else freeze dry without special equipment,
    Other than a large metal baking sheet and cranking the cool on your freezer to max, just spreading out everything thin?

    Sadly, I can't justify the expense. Especially at my age. When I think about the total cost of this unit, I compare that expense to how much food I can store using the equipment I already have. Primarily Presto pressure canners, Excalibur dehydrator and a FoodSaver vacuum sealer. While I have a standalone freezer and another in my refrigerator, I don't consider these for long term or shelf stable foods.
    Not discounting the unit, itself. I'm sure it's fine for folks who can justify the expense.

      I use a 5 gal food safe buckets. My son drilled a hold in the top and put a vaccine seal for a wine bottle. I use grit guards for those buckets like dehydrater trays. Put a layer of desiccant on the bottom stack trays with food, close airtight lid and suck out air with the Food Saver wine bottle suction. I put my in chest freezer for 2-4 days. There are videos on in RUclips.

      @@deannealbrecht774 I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish, but that is not freeze drying. The vacuum needed to withdraw the moisture would shred a five-gallon bucket. Notice how thick the steel and the door on these things.

      @@essaboselin5252hile you are correct about that not being freeze drying of the food, you are way off on the statement of shredding a plastic bucket.
      Most people who don’t work with a vacuum pump every day for a living think that a deep vacuum is magical and amazing and almost “black hole” like.
      Sadly, like most magic, once you learn the truth (and work with it 40-60 hours a week 😥) it’s not as exciting as the idea was before you peeked behind the curtain. 😔
      A perfect vacuum cannot be obtained on the surface of the planet with the vacuum pumps being used here. If even 1 micron exists, it’s not a perfect vacuum. And this pump is not getting this food even close to one micron- you’ll have to take my word on that.
      But, let’s say it could get to a perfect vacuum- 0 microns- perfect vacuum. That’s 14.8psi at sea level. One atmosphere. Pretty disappointing, isn’t it? 🥺 and yes, a 5 gallon plastic pail can withstand one atmosphere.
      I have a 5 gallon plastic pail with an o-ring gasketed lid and a 1/4” flair fitting in it that I use to kill insect larvae on my firewood with. Sometimes I get pine that has beetles or ants in it. I don’t want them in my house, so I split the bucked-up round and put it in the bucket. I put my old vacuum pump on it and let it run for a couple days. It does not get to a perfect vacuum, as there is moisture in the wood (and the insects), or even close to a perfect vacuum, but it gets below 8000 microns- think Arnold Schwarzenegger in that movie about blue sky over mars or whatever. 😵 low enough for me to be comfortable bringing that infested firewood into my wood paneled house to burn that night without thinking the bugs are going to be feasting on my cedar covered walls and ceilings while I sleep. 😎🫶
      Also, think about how astronauts wear seriously flexible suits to do space walks in a literally perfect vacuum: outer space, with atmosphere inside their suits- basically the opposite of what we are doing down here on the planet with a vacuum pump, and their suits are not “shredded” by the vacuum…
      But no, after having deflated everyone’s visions of grand and glorious magical vacuum chamber voodoo, I would not trust the food in that bucket in the freezer for any longer than the leftovers in a Tupperware container right beside that bucket on the freezer shelf.
      Sorry to your son, as I know he was honestly trying to help you out. 😔
      I have a food saver seal a meal packager with the wine bottle hose as well. And I like and use it often.
      But it runs for about 10 seconds before it seals the bags: I listen to that pump change pitch just like everyone else who uses it.
      I can write you a trillion dollar check that that food saver does not get that bag down to 1 micron, or even close to that, in 10-odd seconds! My 7cfm 2 stage Robinaire professional vacuum pump that I use on my firewood bucket would not get that bag down to under 500 microns in under 30 seconds, let alone 10 seconds!
      Which brings to mind the fact that a food saver bag is measurably thinner than the 5 gallon bucket that was supposed to get ripped to shreds by a vacuum pump. Nope, vacuum isn’t the black magic we all thought and hoped it was. 😭
