I saw Glen play with Steve Wariner at a fund raiser Steve held every year in his hometown. The venue was outside and I was waiting at Glen's tour bus after the show, with an album for him to hopefully sign, not knowing he was already on the tour bus. I finally walked away and as I was walking I heard someone yell at me. I turned around it was Glen having just walked off the bus. He said, "were you waiting for me"? I went back and he signed my album and even talked guitars for a few minutes. It is a great memory for me.

Glen Campbell played my Uncle's 50th birthday party. I got to hang out with Glen. on the Island of Kauai in 2008. I picked him up hitchhiking. I didn't recognize him.
He didn't know who I was. We were just two friends riding around the Island. So we drove to "pine trees" in Hanalei Bay. Shook hands and said goodbye. When I sat down at the picnic table with my friend
Jeff asked me "how long have you been friends with Glen Campbell."
I said "I just picked him up hitchhiking." Glen would walk Hanalei Beach. He would stop and hang out, and everybody would pass the guitar around in a circle. He was comfortable just being a person among other people. He loved the beach, he loved to listen to other people play, and hear what they had to say. There was no edge to him. Easy to be with.

Just the two of us happening upon each other and talking one-on-one during each occasion to pass time. And you are right. He was a gentleman's gentleman in terms of casual interaction and enjoyment of being in the company of others with friendly conversation.

Cool story. I had a similar, much shorter story of an encounter with a humble Danny Gatton three weeks before he passed. I had met him four times in 1979 when he repaired two guitars for me at his shop in Oxon Hill, MD, but I had been out of State a while and had not seen him when I came back since 1979. I honestly didn't recognize him that day in 1994 although we talked a bit about my guitar and other things at a music gear swap meet down in Waldorf, MD. Only after his passing did a good friend, who had been with us in the latter part of the conversation, make me realize it was Danny.

In 1967 I lived in Los Angeles . I got every break imaginable. I was also only twenty years old. I was at CBS on Fairfax where they shot the Smothers Brothers Show one day with a musical Director doing a lead sheet.
There were all these small 10 by 10 feet practice rooms. I saw a door open, and it was Glen alone in one of the rooms with an Ovation ( not the model he’s using here ) guitar. I walked in the room, and he just said “hi, how are you doing ? “
I said fine I was just there with a musical director writing out a chart for me.
I asked if I could just sit in the other chair ,and listen to what your doing ,and why you’re doing it.
It said it was something for the show.
In any event he was as humble, and kind as a person can get .
He had a sheet he was looking at, I assumed he was reading a chart.
It was just a chord chart.
I had no idea he didn’t read, but he knew instinctive what to do .
    That was so long ago.
It only lasted maybe five minutes, but it was a five minutes I’ll never forget.
Great interpreter of songs. Jimmy Webb wrote for Glen.
That is a match made in heaven.
    A great singer,a great player,and great writer .
That was LA in the mid sixties.

Well, I am a fan, but I can easily see why some wouldn't be. But then I am so grateful that we all intrinsically have our own personal tastes. The world of music, and the world in general, would be unbearably boring otherwise.

The most impeccable musician ever. He knew no bounds and was adept at any genre and was equally accomplished in other instruments and his vocals were an instrument all their own. He will always remain "Gentle on My Mind" and he has left a void that won't be filled in our lifetime.

The tone was beautiful. These tv appearances are what got me into the guitar initially, Roy Clark, Glenn Campbell, et all from the 60's and 70's tv were truly skilled and musical. Johnny A. Is the only one from today that comes to mind who will do covers in a solo instrumental style that just wows you. His version of Wichita Lineman is flawless.

He was a very underrated guitarist. He was stuck between rock and country, so I guess that's why most people don't really know how great he was. Most people just thought of him as pop.
And Fil gives us all the technical details of Glen's playing, and my head explodes.

But never underrated by Muscians you'll will note. Though I found a lot of his music a bit bland ( except his Jimmy Web songs) His ability to interpret and the emotion he could add to a song -just wow. Talented man.

His improvising skills were off the chart. I grew up watching him in high school. Had just began to play guitar. His influence is still with me to this day. Not to mention his session playing, and for someone who didn’t really read music, he was amazing. Glad you analyzed this one Phil, just great.

Such a great song and so much feeling in Glen's lead playing. Talk about sweeping he's doing it without any distortion, that's insanely hard to do and hard to keep the clarity. Thanks for the analysis and sharing the vid Fil. Cheers!!! 100K subs coming soon...

I was so lucky to have been able to see him on his farewell tour. I grew up watching him on tv & was thrilled that he was appearing at the Count Basie Theatre, walking distance from my home in NJ.
He needed a teleprompter for the words, but he absolutely KILLED on the guitar!
Always with his wonderful sense of humor in tact.
I was still devastated by his death, but I saw that interview with Alice Cooper.
It made me a little less sad, knowing that he was finally at peace.
    Cheers!

    • @gypsy13291

I agree, it really is well worth seeing. I watched that documentary because I've always loved Glen Campbell, and also because my mother has Alzheimer's Disease. It was heartbreaking, but also inspiring and educational; I highly recommend it to anyone who's ever been touched by that horrible disease or any other type of dementia - and that's just about everyone. On a lighter note, when I was a kid my dad was a lineman for Bell in NW PA. The first time I heard Wichita Lineman (about 7 or 8 years old) I just couldn't believe it. I couldn't wait to tell my mom, my brother, my friends, the neighbors, etc., that there was a song about my dad on the radio! The "Wichita" part went right over my head but I understood all the references to the job and was absolutely floored that my dad had become so famous. My mom doesn't have many memories left but for some reason that one stuck with her - me running up to her and yelling "they're singing a song about DAD on the radio!!!" - which makes me both cringe and smile at the same time. I still love that song even though I eventually figured out it wasn't specifically about my father. :)

It is beautiful and tragic. Stunning how the music remained so resiliently even as good overall functioning was being peeled away by Alzheimer's. The man loved music and loved having a stage to perform, and he was amazing. I was blessed to see him on tour at a time when he still appeared well, although it's clear now that he was deteriorating cognitively already. He was entertaining, corny as always, and effortlessly fluid on guitar, which he highlighted to our pleasure. His voice was in fine form, unlike most of the guys in their 70's we know and love. Still miss the guy. RIP Glen

This shows why so many legendary rock, blues, jazz, and country musicians sought out Glen Campbell for session work, consults, and peer-jams! One of the very best guitarists of the 20th Century who appears on so many hit songs of his day without a credit on the release. Along with all the important things in his life such as faith and family, Glen was an extraordinary musician and most brilliant performer, all-ways! Very nice analysis Fil, your insight is spot-on. “Rock!” 🎤🎸🎶🏅🆒

Most people have no idea whatsoever that Glen Campbell played on many bands albums, instead of the actual artist that were "in" the band .
In other words, He was hired to play in the recording studio to do the guitar work for the bands guitarist.
It saved the record companys Thousands of Dollar because he had the timing, and could do the parts in very few takes, and many times played the part in just 1 "take" .
