I came here to shout the name of the human man warrior Thick44 ( Tony Schnur ) who passed from cancer about a month ago. Ark, minecraft, battlefield, conan exiles, are some of the games he played. He also was a voice in Battlefield Friends (recon). Rip Tony
I remember a friend of mine, he was a British immigrant living in Portugal. I would wake up at 2am to play Modern Warfare 2 on the 360 with him. After months playing with him, and then randomly weeks of not seeing him online, he was active. I was so happy that I sent him a volley of voice messages. I received a single message from his cousin who had been gifted the 360. My friend had been mugged, and was stabbed. Unfortunately, he wasn't found and brought to the hospital until after it was too late. I miss you everyday bro.
This kind of stuff brings tears to my eyes. Maybe it’s because I have very little outside of my gaming or maybe it’s because it’s amazing that as gamers, with all our issues and differences, we can come together in such a way to remember our gamer friends and have such good come from it like helping charities and bringing more content to our favorite games. It’s such an amazing thing when you really look at it all. Thanks for the video, WhatCulture.
I had a friend that played Perfect World he had an accident with a motorcycle and passed away, when his fellow guild members and friends in the game received the notice of his death all of them gathered around his character and they did an homenage to him it was beaultiful. Seeing this video made me remember my friend Lucas. Thanks for the vídeo.
the Ubisoft team immortalized my friend on the map Theme Park in Rainbow Six Siege, which was his favorite game before he passed. They put his username on the arcade machines as the high score, RIP BostonBearJew. if you ever do a part 2 I can give you guys more insight on how my friend and I made it happen.
I just came here to say this! I didn't know him, but I would always see the name on the arcade screen and figured it was just one of the developers or something. Then I finally learned the story behind it. Ever since then, every time I play that map I will stop at that arcade and pay respect to him
So much publicity is always given to the negative parts of any video game's community. This brought tears to my eyes and was very heartwarming. Thank you for sharing these stories:)
Another great example of a community honoring people, when the Mangaka for Berserk tragically passed away there was a mourning ceremony in FFXIV where everyone was a Dark Knight, the only class in the game that features iconic dark armor similar to Guts from Berserk and the Great Sword, another similar one that happened in FFXIV was when Asmongold's mother passed away and players all over mourn her passing, despite Asmongold currently not back in FFXIV the community eagerly awaits his return to this day
There are at least 2 in WoW that weren't mentioned. The grave of Gary Gygax was placed in the game after his passing as the father of modern rpg, and a young man who toured the Blizzard facility thanks to make a wish was added as a quest giver in the Tauren low level area where you help him find and feed his dog.
Yeah there are quite a number of tributes in WoW. Stan Lee is another. And though they were added before the actor's death, there are at least three characters named after Ronald Lee Ermie, the actor that played the drill instructor in Full Metal Jacket.
Back when MGS V came out, Kojima personally visited a fan's home who passed away shortly before the release and the visit. He had the composer write a instrumental track for him, it was very sad. The video is called "official debriefing".
The Jennifer Mech Warrior one hit hard. Any of the ones with kids do honestly. Seen enough of that in my life to have an overflow of empathy for them and the families. Happy cries are nice now and then 🙂
Sean Smith also known as vile rat was a member of eve online, when he passed away his friends spelt his name out in the stars, sean was a tech guy caught up in events played out in the film, 13 hours:the secret soldiers of benghazi
There was also a tribute in Spyro Reignited Trilogy to a fan's mother that was looking forward to the game... but the game delay meant she never got to see the final game... It's on the paintings in the Spyro 3 Year of the Dragon in the second hub world.
I wonder if the Robin Williams one, the lounging is also a tribute to Mork & mindy, cause if you remember, Mork's spaceship was a small egg-like thing.
Extremely glad to see Sarah's Jenner on this list! I purchased the 'Mech after I heard about her tragic story on the MWO forums. It always brings a sad smile to my face every time I roll out with the brightly colored 'Mech and think how happy she would surely be knowing she had a big stompy robot named after her.
Another excellent tribute would be what SMITE had done for two members of the esports side of the game. David "Allied" Hance was a popular player who ended up passing away in 2017 due to cancer. Since then every iteration of the Conquest map (the map the game's esports is played on) has included a statue of him themed around old Greek statues. The other is for John Finch, a shoutcaster for the game who was a fan favorite. He unexpectedly passed away in 2021 and was immortalized in game by a little finch that can be seen flying around the Gold Fury side of the Conquest map.
I am not a emotional man by any degree, but these tiny actions by game devs for their fans who unfortunately passed away brings a tear of joy in my eye 🥲
If there is a commenter edition, the Madden Bowl in Madden NFL 23 should be on the list. John Madden's death in late 2021 really hit the NFL community hard. In a nice touch, EA Sports added a "Madden Bowl" game mode. The AFC vs. NFC game is set at the Oakland Coliseum pre-"Mt. Davis" renovation. Commentators Charles Davis and Brandon Gaudin gave insights into Madden's life. And EA Sports gave a touching tribute to John for the halftime show. It was really touching.
Psy is becoming a new favorite. When they did a video with the OG and brilliant Jules, it was beautiful! 😍 both of those voices are becoming part of a daily routine. Oh and shoutout to Jess too ❤️
Gearbox did it in 3 as well. A guy was dying of cancer and was afraid he wasn't going to make it to see the release. he reached out and they brought him a copy early and named a gun after him. His name was Trevor Eastman and the gun in the trevonator
I believe there's also a Junkrat spray in Overwatch called Venomous, by someone named Leon, who suffers from chronic illness, back in 2021. Uncertain of details, but it does seem to be a tribute or a wish granted of some sort, which is nice.
Jules may be the inspirational figure behind the positive messages, Psy nailed them with simple yet subtle messages that band people together. In case no has yet to say this, for each one who made the effort to drop by this video, you're an absolute legend.
The Robin William lounging place is a representation of the egg from mork n Mindy, rest in peace to a beautiful soul.😢 P.s Good on these Devs and players each and all hoorah
The trainer Coyote in City of Heroes: This character is named after the first pre-beta City of Heroes message board member, Kiyotee. Kiyotee, who was named Matthew Bragg in real life, was always the one to help out new people on the message boards. He died shortly after the game was released, and the contact was renamed in his honor. -IMDB, check External Links below When he was added, Coyote replaced Detective Wright.
I used to play Star Trek: Fleet Command and one of the most amazing human beings I've met (virtually) passed away from cancer. I wish I could remember his name as it was several years ago. When the news was passed around on the server, every ship on the server created a massive heart around his base. Also understand that this is a pvp-focused game and most of those people would normally be fighting each other instead of sitting next to each others' ships.
Psy, you got me in the feels with this video. This is the 1st time I watched a WCG list video and cried. Each of the tributes listed for the fallen gamers were absolutely beautiful moments and very classy acts from the developers/studios. Whenever you decide to do another edition of this list topic, do give a heads-up in the intro of that video; it might help us in paying our respects and giving each of the fallen a moment or so of honor. May each of the fallen rest well. God bless their families and loved ones.
In black desert online a guildmaster by the name of Doinks died in a house fire, most of us in the Balenos 2 server stood by the beach and we blew our emote horns for least 3 hrs straight
Minecraft has another tribute. If you name a rabbit Toast then it would become a unique variant that cannot be found naturally as a tribute to a player's real-life pet that had died.
I didn’t know about that dying light tribute that’s sad 😢 I really enjoy those games and even collected all murals in dying light 2 there is a tribute to George Romero too
This just made me cry. A lot. Possibly because it came out just before Lance Reddick (who played Commander Zavala in Destiny) suddenly passing. Destiny players have been congregating around his in game character and using all sorts of emotes such as kneeling to mourn him.
Aww man. You got me. . Started tearing up by the end of the last tribute. Videos games do bring lots of people together. I hope i continue to see acts like these for years to come. Gives me hope.
That lounge area for the genie was actually meant to be a reference to Mork's ship in Mork & Mindy, a sitcom in which Robin Williams plays an eccentric alien visiting Earth and learning about how humans live.
Reminds me of the time a WoW player passed away suddenly, and their guild had an in-game funeral for them. And then a rival guild raided the funeral and massacred all the mourning players.
This reminds me of a no longer existing bakery around my area which named one bakery item after each baker who died in our area from the job illness called "flour lungs". Till I realized hat I thought bakers have a secure and safe job. Not has much to do with gaming but that's also an awesome kind of tribute to awesome people doing their job.
I'm surprised that Daniel Scott from Geofront wasn't on here. He helped out with the Trails from Zero/to Azure fan translation and was one of the reasons why NIS American decided to localized. His RUclips channel (KillScottKill) served as an introduction for people looking to get into the Trails series. He died of health complications last year but both the fan translations and the official translations of the games have tributes to the guy in the form of one of the games chests as well as an official tribute in the games credits. May the guy rest in peace and here's to him bringing over two chapters from a series beloved by many for if he and the Geofront didn't do what they did, those vital chapters probably would have stayed Japan only forever. 😢
Years ago when my cat passed away my brother's clan in Ark built a grave near my shack for him. It was incredibly touching that they did that! Unfortunately a few days later a rather dastardly player we thought we had a truce with attacked our base with a bunch of dragons and killed all our dinos, eggs and unfortunately my boy's grave. Never played the game again.
That "lounging space" for Robin Williams? sorry but that isnt that, it's the ultimate tribute to Robin Williams, who's breakout role was on the hit tv show "Mork and Mindy". Robin playing "Mork from Ork" arrived on earth in his tiny little space ship.. shaped like an egg. That "lounge spot" is the egg, it's where his legacy started. The genie is a tribute to his most beloved role, the egg a tribute to the start of his career, to me the egg is the bigger tribute. (and you missed it lol)

Gaming culture can be very toxic. I've been a fan of gaming since I was 5, but there is quite a bit of negativity at times. It's truly awesome to see the positive side. Thanks for the video.
The gaming community used to be looked at as nothing but nerds and trolls. And I'm glad that idea has finally started changing. Some of the best people I know are people I've never even met in person. Joining a guild feels like a family if you find the right one and you build bonds with these people and when one isn't around anymore it truly feels like losing a loved one. I'm glad to see stuff like what's in this list. We're not just faceless trolls hidden behind screen names. We are real people with feelings for the people in our community.
Just found mike in bl2 for the first time yesterday ( haven’t been playing it long) 5:56 was nice to get some context about it Also their are multiple wooden crosses in DayZ for fallen gamers Most famously at devils castle
So the egg thing on the island in WoW with the Robin Williams genie I'm pretty sure is a reference to the TV show Mork and Mindy, where Robin played an alien named Mork.
I don’t think anyone knows this but Technoblade never dies was already splash text in Minecraft. Especially on the Xbox 360 version of Minecraft. Still a nice nod.
No mention of the tributes to Leonard Nemoy in Star Trek online? I get that it’s different circumstances since he did voice work for the game but still, he’s been forever immortalized in statue form on both Vulcan and New Romulus
I would hope someday I could be immortalized in a game that I love. I just play a lot of games and I'm a fan of a lot of games. Gaming has always been my outlet and I've picked up twitch streaming back in 2020. Though I don't have a lot of popularity in the online community, perhaps someday I can because gaming is a part of me now. I found these stories very touching and heartwarming. Peace and Love to all those who have lost someone, and to the developers who have supported their fans in extraordinary ways.
a little bit different but i know there was some devs that added a cat to their cRPG after one of the fans lost theirs....im pretty sure it's Tiger from Owlcat's Pathfinder games Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous but i'm having a hard time finding anything confirming it. edit: can confirm i was right, quote is in my reply to this
oh I found it being mentioned You can also adopt a kitty, Tiger, who will follow your party around. Owlcat created Tiger in honour of a community contributor's cat, which they lost just before the game launched. "As a token of our eternal gratitude for everything he contributed to the creation of Pathfinder: Kingmaker, we've recreated Tiger in the game so that he may roam with his human friend(s) once more," said Owlcat boss Oleg Shpilchevsky.
If you happen to do a part 2 there's at least 2 in Warframe I know about: A cosmetic item to in memory of Andrea Lehnen. And a shrine in Iron Wake in memory of Datareaper.
I came here to shout the name of the human man warrior Thick44 ( Tony Schnur ) who passed from cancer about a month ago. Ark, minecraft, battlefield, conan exiles, are some of the games he played. He also was a voice in Battlefield Friends (recon). Rip Tony

Say what you want about Bethesda games quality and polish, and the late PR fails, but when it comes to community, they have always been really solid!
I didn't expect to cry while watching this, but here we are. The one with the brothers/father on Fallout 4 had me hurting.

Beedle?
No, Beedle originated from The Wind Waker. The Robin Williams tribute character in that is Dayto.
@@civilwildman The only traveling merchant I've seen in BotW is Beedle.
Glitterbeard in Sea of Thieves is a beautiful tribute, as well. Such a tearjerker.

That lounge area for the genie was actually meant to be a reference to Mork's ship in Mork & Mindy, a sitcom in which Robin Williams plays an eccentric alien visiting Earth and learning about how humans live.

a little bit different but i know there was some devs that added a cat to their cRPG after one of the fans lost theirs....im pretty sure it's Tiger from Owlcat's Pathfinder games Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous but i'm having a hard time finding anything confirming it. edit: can confirm i was right, quote is in my reply to this
oh I found it being mentioned
You can also adopt a kitty, Tiger, who will follow your party around.
