Lyrics:
[Talking]
Ha ha ha, I don't believe it
Da, da, ah, ah don't touch it
Hey, Ray, hey, Sugar, tell them who we are...
Well, we're big rock singers
We got golden fingers
And we're loved everywhere we go...(That sounds like us)
We sing about beauty and we sing about truth
At ten thousand dollars a show...(Right)
We take all kinds of pills that give us all kind of thrills
But the thrill we've never known
Is the thrill that'll getcha when you get your picture
On the cover of the Rollin' Stone
(Rollin' Stone...) Wanna see my picture on the cover
(Stone...) Wanna buy five copies for my mother...(Yes)
(Stone...) Wanna see my smilin' face
On the cover of the Rollin' Stone...(That's a very very good idea)
I got a freaky ole lady name a Cocaine Katy
Who embroiders on my jeans
I got my poor ole grey haired daddy
Drivin' my limousine
Now it's all designed to blow our minds
But our minds won't really be blown
Like the blow that'll gitcha when you get your picture
On the cover of the Rollin' Stone
(Rollin' Stone...) Wanna see our pictures on the cover
(Stone...) Wanna buy five copies for our mothers...(Yeah)
(Stone...) Wanna see my smilin face
On the cover of the Rollin' Stone
[Talking]
Hey, I know how
Rock and roll...
[Instrumental]
Ah, that's beautiful
We got a lot of little teenage blue eyed groupies
Who do anything we say
We got a genu-wine Indian Guru
Who's teaching us a better way
We got all the friends that money can buy
So we never have to be alone
And we keep gettin' richer but we can't get our picture
On the cover of the Rollin' Stone
(Rollin' Stone...) Wanna see my picture on the cover
(Stone...) Wanna buy five copies for my mother...(Wa wa)
(Stone...) Wanna see my smilin' face
On the cover of the Rollin' Stone
On the cover of the Rollin'...
(Stone...) Wanna see my picture on the cover
[Talking]
I don't know why we ain't on the cover, baby...
(Stone...) Wanna buy five copies for my mother
[Talking]
We're beautiful subjects...
(Stone...) Wanna see my smilin' face
[Talking]
I ain't kiddin', we would make a beautiful cover...
On the cover of the Rollin' Stone...
[Talking]
Fresh shot, right up front, man...
I can see it now, we'll be up in the front...
Smilin', man...
Ahh, beautiful...
I was a party animal the spot today can't touch for a while we had back there been a more red Colombian gold I'm in recovery today borgess is bring back memories taking all kinds of pills I was a little bit too young for Woodstock I don't think my mom will let me go God is a good memories I found all my frills on Mill Hill actually in my mother's basement took a lot of hot cars up there buried him also went to jail

That's a good question.
My father just passed last week. He would play this while taking me to school years ago and we would be singing together the whole way. Some of the best moments in life are the little ones. Spend as much time as you can with the people you love.
agree my friend always enjoy the ones you love hugs
Me too
Really happy for your memories.
I'm sorry for your lose he had great taste in music
Bless you child, please love your father's memory, he loved you so much!!!
This song is over 50 years old. I'm 31. It's 2024 and I still sing this song word for word. Rip dad. Thank you for the good taste in music.
In about 20 years this comment will be true
Dude, you rock!
I'm 30 and I totally understand
I remember sing dr hook when I was a kid. One of my dad’s favourite bands miss him so much

And on March 29th. 1973...................Dr. Hook got their COVER OF THE ROLLING STONE.
RIP Ray Sawyer...😢😢
This song still sounds good almost 50 years later.
Which is more then can be said for the crap of today
Dude! You got the right groove. You dig man?.......Hippie lingo from that era, and I am old enough to remember it!
God has it been that long? It's like yesterday.
@@davidharris5736 I remember when that was new and seen on the news on television.

Yes it does....💯
Who knew that music like this that we grew up loving would still be better than anything out there over 40 years later??!!!
I went to Japan to find great music, and found it I did!
Amen ❤️💁🏻♀️👍🏻 and I’m just 35! My parents had a amazing record collection 👍🏻💁🏻♀️
51 yrs anyway. Didn't they play that at Woodstock?
I have a pair of boots that squeak. That noise is better than most of the stuff on offer as 'music' right now.
I had a good idea listening to it as a boy that nothing would ever touch this music and so much other music from the 60s 70s 80s even until mid 90s great shit was coming out but After that its 99 percent shit
I'm going to be 70 years old and in a nursing home still rocking out to Dr Hook AC/ DC Bob Seger The Doors etc .. The staff not is not going to know what to do with me .
If they're smart they'll turn up the volume.
@@bubbaray575 They wont have to , I will already have it turned up lol . like I said they wont know what to do with me .
@@tammybray5008 They'll do the same thing they did with our grandparents and their loud Glenn Miller and Andrews Sisters music. Every generation thinks its music is better than what follows, and all old people sooner or later have to crank up the volume in order to hear it. After us, they'll have to do the same with the Police and Tears for Fears, then Green Day and Radiohead, probably U2's entire catalog, and you know rap will be all over the nursing homes at some point. The passion and the art are always there. Only our perception changes. I think nursing home staff have seen it all.
Funny way to go
Yeah git them other old folks up and stompin. Haha
I cannot stop listening to this song. Am 64 and loving it
It brings back happier times ♥️

That glorious period in the 70s when country and rock overlapped. So many excellent groups, including this one.
Technically, country and rock have overlapped to some degree going back to the mid 50’s starting with rockabilly music, followed by early beginnings of country-rock in the mid to late 60s which reached it’s peak in the 70s. So while country-rock was most popular in the 1970’s it origins go back to the 50s. Country-rock continued to some degree in the 80s and 90s but on a smaller scale. With the collapse of mainstream rock music’s popularity as a whole starting in the 2000’s and 2010’s, country-rock has largely disappeared, at least on the charts, though some modern country artists have included country-rock songs on their albums and concert set lists like Chris Stapleton and Sturgill Simpson.

This song is a literal time machine. The second it starts, I am 8 years old again, I am living my best life with my mom and dad and sisters. Not a care in the world on a perfect hot and dry summer day in Southern California. I am thinking of my dad who is currently in ICU slowly recovering from a cardiac event he suffered a week ago and I am sending him the vibes of this song to help him heal. Music is something I totally believe can do that.
Sending good vibes for your father...
Amen 🙏 🙏
I was there. 9 years old. This song was a staple of my early childhood, like "Joy to the World" . Had no idea what they were singing about then, but it sounded cool.
Me and a little friend of mine split the cost of "Joy to the World" on a 45. I still remember it was .93 out the door. I think it was 1970.
I've been digging this song since I was 6 or 8 years old, 57 now, sends me to the fountain of youth always...
I agree
Man, you are cool! You dig?

Not by those of us who were fans & still are ✌
Now that is one great Old Hippie tune composed by Shel Silverstein those guys really mirror the crowd
Back in the early '90s I was a DJ at our local radio station. I never heard of this song before but a guy called into request it. I had to go live on air right after I heard the song and I was so busy laughing I totally blew my cue!!

One of the most enjoyable songs of the 1970's, and this song helped Dr. Hook actually get on the cover of Rolling Stone!
The original garage band
Ray was such a goof, both onstage and off. You just couldnt be depressed around him. If he thought you were bummed out,he was right on you. Driving you nutz until you laughed. I miss him oodles. It's sad knowing he's not in the world anymore.
RIP,my friend.
Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show were featured on the cover of the Rolling Stone magazine. Their iconic song “The Cover of ‘Rolling Stone’” humorously expressed their desire to be on the cover, and the magazine granted their wish. On March 29, 1973, they appeared on the cover, not with a photograph but with a colorful caricature of band members Ray Sawyer, Dennis Locorriere, and Billy Francis. The cover referred to them as “What’s-Their-Names,” in line with the satirical nature of their song. The song itself was written by Shel Silverstein and became a hit, peaking at No. 6 on the Billboard pop chart.
Happy 50th anniversary to this great peppy song, it was released right around this time in 1973! It’s March 2023 as I make this post. May this excellent song live on for another 50 years!!!

It will keep living on as entirely too legendary. Plus entirely too many who still absolutely love it.
I remember that song in real time. My recollection is that the two lead singers ultimately got onto the cover of the Rolling Stone. It meant something then. It was certainly a different world.
In cartoon form, but not a picture, they made the cover of the rolling stone.
The only issue is the band/singers did not write this song, another song writer did.
If you have an original copy of the issue they are on in mint condition, its worth thousands... never saw one up close. Cartoon form. Thinkin rolling stone did that for a reason
Yes. And what an ingeniously lever way, as artists,to get noticed, get on the front cover if The Rolling Stone, which is how popular musicians' careers were launched. The songs of that era were more truthful!
@@chrisperrien7055 I don't see the issue. Today, the big thing is for a band/singer to write their own music or to at least collaborate. But for decades before, there were a ton of people who were songwriters, but not performers themselves. They would write songs either for a label who would give it to one of their talents to do or they would write stuff for a specific band/singer. Even bands/singers who did write their own stuff would also have songs from songwriters.
In this case, Shel Silverstein (yes THAT Shel Silverstein) wrote most of the songs for this band. Including this song.
The song was written by the incredibly talented Shel Silverstein, composer, writer of short stories and children's books and cartoonist for Look Magazine, Sports Illustrated and most notably, Playboy. He also wrote Sylvia's Mother, A Boy Named Sue and The Ballad of Lucy Jordan.
Glad someone recognized the true genius.
cool
Shel was a very talented and interesting person . Worth looking into
I didn't know that - all great songs
He also did some really great poetry. I think the best thing he ever did was "Rosalie's Good Eats Cafe". Or at least it was the one that reached me the most - I lived that poem for a while.
Ha! Ray Sawyer had some Mick Jagger-swagger! Love this song
i searched for this song forever. my grandparents use to listen to this with me when i was younger and they passed away a few years ago. this brings back memories of our car rides. they had a burnt cd disc with this and “cover of the rolling stones” and it was my favorite 2 songs on the disc.
