I am a simple man - I see a notification that Sam is reviewing a model so bad he can’t help but condemn it even in the video title, I watch and eagerly await the evisceration.

I think it’s that phrase “for this price” which is key to the accuracy of your review Sam. Although the quality of the body is left in the dust by the thing barely even running and the mechanism being faulty out of the box. They need sending back when this happens or Bachmann won’t fix the issues.

In November 1995 at a swapmeet I purchased two of these locos, subsequently found to be inaccurate.I paid 33.00 each, one was the auto version.41298(I think)and 41313.Used regularly and still going strong.
I have ordered the BR 15xx for 127.50 from Hattons. With inflation I don't think this too much of an increase.Others will probably disagree.
    Thanks for the review Sam.

I have one of these in BR livery and also one of the old split chassis ones, so have quite a good comparison. I generally agree with your scoring with the performance and mechanism being very good and the detail and quality being average to below average.
When I compare my new chassis Ivatt tank to other models you have reviewed and scored higher, it however beats them in my book. That includes the Oxford J27, Bachmann Fairburn, Bachmann E1/J72 (new tool version) amongst others. The reason being... the Ivatt runs so much better than all of them. It never sticks on frogs or uneven track where others often do and the pony trucks having the couplings make it better for pushing against tension locks. It is the best shunting loco I've ever had.
The detail on the body definitely drags it down, but I feel there is a bit too much focus on this in the tone of the review, which as usual is on point with just about everything.
Personally I think 1/5 is a bit harsh on the value. If a model has a 5 pole motor, bearings and other good points on the mechanism, I would instantly expect to pay over £110 for a medium/large tank engine in 2022. 2/5 at worst for me and more like 2.5/5 on a model that I would expect to see RRP at £140 and discounted by retailers to £120.
Hope this all sounds like a constructive comment based on owning one of these models and keep up the great work on the reviews Sam, I always enjoy watching them and find your opinion and knowledge incredibly valuable.

You may like to check the right hand valve gear. The crosshead seems to be bumping about instead of moving backwards and forwards smoothly. That body was not of acceptable quality.
    Excellent review.

    • @williamsquires3070
      @williamsquires3070 Год назад

Yes, I’d check out the valve gear (on both sides) with a loupe or magnifying glass and see if there’s any flashing on the parts where there shouldn’t be. Also, add a tiny amount of plastic-compatible grease to the part that slides in/out of the cylinders. Then give it another run-in and see if that helps.

Good video, Sam. The problem may be in the offside crosshead @ 25.00. There certainly seems quite a lot of play as the crosshead moves up and down the slide-bars. It suggests quite a lot of play from the crankpin and the connecting rod. I would be disappointed as well.

I think the jamming up is because of the right-hand crossheads. If you look closely they are a bit bent apart which causes it to get loose and jam up with the rest of the valve gear...

Sam, Bought the same model at the end of November, brand new, from TMC for £99. Not yet managed to run it in or really test it other than on a small piece of track using DC. I have fitted a Next decoder. Removing the body and fitting it was very easy. This will not make you feel any better, paying over £40 less. Enjoy the rest of Christmas and a Happy New Year.

The review made me look at the body on my old one. On mine the handrails and smokebox dart are more to scale, the ladder fitting holes aren't visible and the fit between chassis and smokebox pipes is good. The old dome was a scale disaster and whilst the new one is a better scale it is too flat topped and doesn't blend into the boiler cladding like it should. The old one never looked right because the large motion bracket was missing. I fitted a cast one years ago to cure this. Mine always ran well so the biggest (only?) improvement is ability to fit DCC without a lot of work and skill.

I have two of these: one an earlier release (also not a split chassis) that I picked up on eBay DCC fitted; the other, the newer British Railways release (41277), which has different detailing around the smokebox end from your LMS version. Apart from the handrails and the smokebox dart, they don't seem too badly off when it comes to detail, and the cab is quite hard to see into anyway so the raised floor is by and large not noticeable. Paint finish on the later version is excellent (the earlier one is matt). They both run brilliantly, which for me makes them worth it, even if I could now buy the new model for £20 less than I originally paid (£120 against £140).

These ivatt's have been around for decades, they go back to the early days of Bachmann which were
just rebranded Mainline stock, with the same poor quality mouldings and chassis that fell apart due to
    low quality plastic.
To just upgrade the chassis and nothing else and charge a high price is an insult.
Hornby can be just as guilty, their quality dropped to suich a low level from their Margate factory that they
moved production to China, it took a few years to improve them and retain their reputation.
At least you have warned us to avoid this loco, sadly you don't always get what you pay for.

Well done review again Sam, and well justified to call B out on this lemon. It’s just beyond unacceptable this. Funny in a way that B obviously can get a way with it. This would go straight back for a refund but your nostalgia is well understood as well since we look at these little machines from a distance. However in all fairness, this is of course utter tosh for the money we thought. Cheerio and a happy December time.

I own 3 of the older Ivatt tanks. One in BR black, one in LMS black, and one in the KWVR red. All of them are basically equivalent to this model, shame the new one does not little improve upon the old. Infact, 2 of them I would argue are BETTER runners then this on slowspeed, crazy! I have no plans to purchase the new one unless I can find it for cheap. Disappointing for I really thought this would be a fun upgrade to a much beloved design.

No, this is the only 2MT tank. Bachmann do the 2-6-0 tender version which has a rather poor oldschool mechanism which you might be able to find for sensible money second hand. And Hornby are doing the BR version of the LMS 2-6-0 2MT...But the Hornby model is even more eye wateringly expensive at £220.

Considering that Bachmann made an entirely new tooling for the LNER V2 and Class 37, I find it strange that they didn't bother doing the same thing for the Ivatt 2MT tank.

    • @rogercantwell3622
      @rogercantwell3622 Год назад

It's an unglamorous prototype and they probably figured they would shift a lot more V2s and 37s. The best value V2, if you can find one, is 31-550B. Old body but that was good enough, and a new chassis. About 1/3 the price of the new one.

  • @Simon-Davis
    @Simon-Davis Год назад

I usually find a redeeming feature with most Bachmann models, but even with a reworked chassis this one doesn't have much going for it. I wasn't a big fan of them when they first came out, compared with some earlier releases from Bachmann the Ivatt seemed a bit of a backwards step even then. I still remember asking to order one at a long gone model shop (Sleepers Models, Erdington), it might even have been my first pre-order. I do remember buying something else instead when it turned up, possibly preserved green 75069.

Bachmann has come a long way through the years. But they still have a problem with their gearing of the newer versions of their locomotives.. They slip in some rather low quality gears that have a tendency to split at the axle. Rendering them useless until repaired. My experience was with the three truck Shay geared locomotive.
The axle gears on the trucks split.
However Northwest Short Line gears have a replacement for this.

I've noticed that Bachmann and some other manufacturers alternate updating mechanisms and bodies, for example in their US line they've been continuing to sell variations of their Prairie 2-6-2 model with a non split chassis. In the last year though they finally came out with a new tooled body for the USRA 0-6-0 it's based on. For a relatively hefty price, of course...

LM valve gear was always clumsy even in 1:1 scale. To get it looking decent in 1:76 would mean making it chunkier than scale clearances can cope with!

    Hi Sam
I purchased 31-443 Bachmann 2mt tank with British railways on the tanks cica 1948 I think it looks slightly better than your LMS one purely based on the livery it has red boiler bands plus British railways in cream wording on the tanks and is also lined around the tanks. Also I noticed the one I purchased has a wesitng house pump on the front right hand side of the loco.I agree the loco isn't worth the money with the non existent detailing especially the Cab.I have fitted a next 18 dcc decoder and the loco runs really well no clogging and runs exceptionally slow in forward and reverse.I to wanted one that's whi I purchased it but it definitely is not worth £140 I think my version is a bit easier on the eye take a look let me know what you think.
    Regards
    Andy M

That's not a Westinghouse pump. That's the LMS Push Pull equipment. A number of Ivatt Tanks were push pull fitted.

Fantastic vid Sam, like always. Hopefully bachmann learn from this rip-off of a model and make better quality models, but still this model seems nice even though it only has a few pieces of minimal detail and quite a bit of design quality flaws

Great review and credit where credit is due you held it to the price you paid rather than the RRP which I think is a much better representation of the model's true quality i.e. still poor at the price you actually pay,

If your memory says it was the best an your favorite loco, then it is then even if it's not looking the best or operating the best. Just enjoy your memory of it sam.

All those little details you need to add for that price? Ouch. Also am glad to see there was no DCC sound as that seems to double if not triple the cost of locomotives, for what amounts to maybe $30-50 and some time to to install. Either way not like this would ever be something I buy new at this price anyways. I think companies are liking to push the "inflation, cost of goods, cost of labor, you're going to pay more" angle any chance they get.

i love these videos where a model is so atrociously bad, dont know why but i think it can be a bit funny just because of how bad a model can be. Merry Christmas!

I think this is very cool and they are based on the Thomas and friends character arthur and he is painted in lms maroon like the rest of his class before British railways go to diesels

    Hey Sam,
I’d reckon that the reason you can’t find the old 2MT body is because you cut it up for your cleaning products test video.

I too have the old version and love it. Mine still works and has only just been replaced as my favourite by an L&YR 2-4-2.
I saw your review of your 2MT last year and your enthusiasm was amazing. Sad to see that they ruined it.

The odd one out is a GWR engine at 27:32
A lof of these close-ups made me make noises of disgust out loud. How could Bachmann pass this off for over $100 on its own? But then again, they try to pass off their Thomas (and similar basic starter set locos) for over $100 rrp.

Sam, labour costs will always factor into the bottom line. Where are those engines made?

I feel so sorry for you, there's nothing worse than nostalgic memories really being crushed. I feel like sending you Bachmann Fairburn Tank to compensate!
