@@davidellinsworth3299 I’ve read the same but I’m not sure if it’s true. Tim has played with so many great musicians over the years and has toured with Pink Floyd as well as Roger Waters. I’ve also read that David appreciated Tims work and just wanted to let him have his moments on the tour by letting him take one of the “non emotional” solos. You can see in the video that David was enjoying every bit of it as well!

It's pure joy! And of course not only for us - the listeners. Notice with what joy all the musicians play. How often Gilmour smiles at the others, as if to say, "That's great, guys, we've really done it. Or how intently he looks at Claudia Fontaine's singing at the end of The Great Gig in the Sky. I don't know Gilmour personally, of course ;-), but from talking to his colleagues (and not only musicians and singers, but also technical and support staff) he seems very relaxed, not only during concerts, but also during rehearsals and on the road. And from his speech it seems to me that this is true.
I recommend watching another "treat" from this concert: "Coming Back to Life". I think you'll be delighted again...
I wish you all the best!

All the supporting musicians for Pulse (and Pink Floyd's previous tours) are top notch, and Tim Renwick's solo is just one example. Pulse is the crowning achievement in live concerts, and this is coming from a live Genesis fan. It doesn't get better than this. I saw Pink Floyd twice on this tour and I've seen a ton of concerts since then and I've only had ONE concert that topped it and that was Roger Waters touring The Wall. The 3D image technology Waters' had was just superior, as it should be since it was years after this 1994 Pink Floyd tour. Even with that said, after almost 30 years this concert is still a technological marvel that beats almost any concert that you will see today! That just shows how advanced Pink Floyd's music and concerts were!
Think about a cell phone from 1994 compared to a cell phone today, now compare this concert to a concert you may see today... Mind blowing!

Wonderful reaction, as always. You're quite right that the song can mean any kind of new start in life. Gilmour said it was partly literally about learning to fly airplanes, which he and Nick both did (Gilmour owned quite a few planes at one time, but later sold all except his favorite biplane, I think), but it was also about taking over as the leader of Pink Floyd, putting out the first album since Roger left, and directing the tours, all of which were a heavy burden and required "learning to fly". (IMO, that's one big reason why PF ended after Division Bell - the Pulse tour was nerve wracking because of the complexity and the amount of money at stake, which was more of a burden than Gilmour wanted to shoulder again. And really, how could you ever top Pulse?) For the rest of us, it can be about starting any new big chapter in life. I love watching you guys as you continue your journey into the PF catalog - you really get it, and it makes me remember how I felt when I first started listening to them. Shine On!

There are so many things to say about this track and this live rendition, most notable is the clear separation/contrast between the Pink Floyd post-Waters departure led by Gilmore, and the Pink Floyd post-Barrett departure led by Waters.
This contrast could be seen in every aspect of this track/performance/tour. Fans also separated in their support, especially in UK & Australia. Gone was the narcissistic perspective in the narration and with it the bitterness and anger. In was the more normalized and generalized introspective view that carried many of the member's upbeat personas. Watch an interview with Nick or David, from the 80s to the present and you don't get that pissed-off negative vibe that you almost always get when you watch Roger in an interview. For some, it wasn't enough to be introspective, it had to have that negativity too and for some, it was just a purist perspective on the band as a whole, that without Waters, Pink Floyd isn't Pink Floyd...oddly enough those same people don't seem to mind a departure of Syd Barrett from Pink Floyd and still retain their qualifications as being Pink Floyd, so their logic and reasoning is hypercritical of their position, but then people who hold to such purists thinking haven't ever been cited for their great rationale or righteousness.

You've done enough Pink Floyd to hopefully notice the difference in tone on the final two albums after the departure of Roger Waters ("A Momentary Lapse Of Reason" and "Division Bell"), where they moved away from the increasing bitterness that was infused into Roger's compositions towards more hopeful and uplifting content. An amazing transformation, accomplished without abandoning the core PF composition ability and musical intricacies. They have no peers...and NEVER will have.

Post-Roger Waters. I loved this album when I was a teen in the late 80s. But it was just another rock album in the end, frankly, in 1987. It had a lot of rivals that year too - perhaps better ones (Hysteria? Slippery When Wet?).
It was not a Pink Floyd work of art. It lacked Waters' poetry, vision, depth, texture and courage. It lacked Roger Waters, in other words. And we all knew it at the time.
But we all still bought the album - and loved it (I still do). Go figure.

As a guitarist and pianist that adores Floyd and Gilmour, I’m now 47 and have concluded the best description of them is:
They don’t play for you and I, or anyone else.
They play to get, and not just get, but demand God’s attention.
Everything they do is so big, epic and tonally pure that it’s magical and worthy of a God’s attention if that makes any sense😂
