    There's also something to be said about how Monica and Q idolize their same sex parent. Q over romanticized his dad and Monica undermined her mom, just for that respective parent to change the way they view relationships in general. Which begs the question: how would a relationship between Q's dad and Monica's mom work (not the characters but the personas)? Because, oddly enough, they are effectively what they wished their partners would have been.

    • @HeitCheri

      Now that's an interesting angle as well! Monica and her mother really didn't understand each other.

      Cool take ! 💯. Hmmmmm. That's really intriguing. It makes me think would Monica's momma be more accepting of Zeke's 'extracurricular activities ' .. or would a Man like Zeke bring the Fighter out of Monica's Mother. To stand up for herself. Hmmm.

    • @cabbitness1983
      @cabbitness1983 5 месяцев назад

      @@queenscarlettpimpsunkiss..5537 that's also an interesting thought. How far would Monica's mom wanted her to go to be her ideal girly girl? If dude took advantage of her at prom, would she blame Monica for letting it happen or would she fight for her? And would that change her view of Monica as a person and not just an image?

    I never thought about Quincy's parents relationship being transactional until you just mentioned it. I never picked up on the nuance of her not cooking and her sh*tting on his scouting job until now...... Barring a deep dive into medical history and such, Quincy being an only child to a couple thats been together that long is a bit telling. Maybe his father didn't want to have any more children with her to prevent from digging deeper hole for himself?? Wow....these deep dives really get you thinking. 😂😂😂😂

    • @HeitCheri
      @HeitCheri  6 месяцев назад +1

      Hmmm... I never thought about why they only had one child. Maybe she didn't want to lose her figure, maybe he didn't want to deal with more kids with her, maybe they made medical decisions, maybe something happened where she couldn't have more children. This is an interesting angle to examine for sure!

    It's not about the job with Quincy parents she knew he was cheating and accepted it because he was playing ball she thought it would change when he retired, but it didn't.
    No one asked Monica because the dudes considered her Quincy girl because clearly they were a little closer than most male/female relationships. Then they don't see her talking to guys

Also those girls were probably very focused and wasn't on that type of time like the guys. I know it's sexist but I really think it was like that for the girl ballers. They had to be serious.

    Fake n bake. I thought the scene was to show that Monica is Passionate, impulsive and cocky. And she looses her cool sometimes due to that...but I could be wrong🤷🏿‍♀️. Quincy always loved Monica because she was different and Monica loved him because he saw her as an equal and a rival. In the car scene he's offended because she thinks he prefers a certain type of girl. Monica is self motivated to be "the first woman in the NBA" Quincy is following in his dad's footsteps but he also wants to compete with her. I think the reason he never asked her out is because he was young and didn't want to ruin their relationship. I also think he choose USC because he wanted to be with her. I could be romanticizing the film because my relationship with my best friend played out similarly... Our grandmothers and our mothers were besties and raised us to marry. However we came to our senses 😅 . No he didn't come though any windows, I was very much a tom boy and didn't play that. We are still close to this day.

    It was shown throughout the movie, in a lot of scenes, that Mon (Monica) liked/loved Quincy. Mon watching Q and that girl make out on his car, how she looked at him during his games, and even when she slut shamed Gabrielle Union's character when they were in the car. I don't think it had anything to do with feminism or anything it was just Mon putting up a front that she was just flat out jealous of Gabby's character, and that she liked Quincy herself. Also, Mon's anti-social behavior, being thought of as a lesbian, and Mon's love for Quincy is what also kept guys from actively asking her out and kept Mon from accepting even their invitations even is she was asked out.
    Whether Mon was able to fully accept, admit that she did like Quincy, it was clear that to us the audience that there were feelings there in Monica. Like even if Mon did have a slew of guys knocking on her door, and she did accept, we saw who her eyes were drawn to when she went to the dance with that college guy. It was always basketball and Quincy for Mon. Basketball was Mon's most important thing of course, so she put all her focus on that, but Mon was also at peace with the fact that she wasn't going to be with Quincy as the two of them got older, so Mon was able to live with just being Quincy's friend.
    Even their second kiss that we see between the two of them after Mon gets her letter, Mon kisses Quincy FIRST! So, yes the feelings were always there in Monica and how she felt about Quincy.

    I went to high school in the late 90s and nobody was checking for us tomboys. Especially the quiet ones. It wasn’t so much about being an athlete, a lot of the girls played sports. But the ones who weren’t girly girls off of the field/court didn’t usually get asked out unless they were very outgoing and had a lot of friends. That’s why I loved this movie when it came out (I hate it now). Finally, the dry-ponytail tomboy got a win!

    I agree with Cheri about Monica being emotional is written off as insignificant. Like there isn't a legitimate reason for her emotions. I think she her emotions are rooted in frustration. Women in sports are expected to be nice and polite at all times. Monica playing aggressively is seen as kind of rude to the opposing team. But Monica is an avid basketball fan and has seen how aggressive the male basketball players especially "the greats" play and they don't get any flack for it. She probably has also seen Quincy play aggressively and get applauded for while she is being penalized. It's frustrating and can make you emotional .

Which stems from the belief women have more emotional attraction while men are more attracted to physical beauty! It is non sense but nearly 15 years has taught me that men believe it is true. I even have guy friends who said they slept with a lesbian and I reminded them by definition that is impossible. You slept with a bisexual or bi-curious woman. I am a lesbian and even my boyfriend in highschool who I adored and thought was perfect could never get me to be comfortable enough to go there. I wasn't physically attracted to him. I think the gender disparages in the feild play a part in heightening Monicas emotional outburst.. But Monica is consistently an emotional, passionate & outspoken person.. she juss finds different ways to display it as she faces different challenges throughout her path.. There are also Men. Athletes and non atheletes that are like that as well.. and Quincy is one of them in certain ways. He juss is silenced & micromanaged in a way by his father and trained to accept that.. Monica is much more of a rebel/fighter. Because thats juss how she is.. and because shes a woman, she gets more push back and Ppl trynna 'knock her down a few notches'. Cuz its a sign of confidence & good sense of liberation.. and Alot of ppl dont want Women to be that way. They want Women to accept whatever is thrown at them silently and with a smile.
    Also Noting. That Quincy & Monica are both quite sensitive individuals.. But Monica is more outspoken, & fearless.. therefore presents more confidence.. That could also play a part in why Quincy treated her a certain way.. Like that same lowkey jealousy & fear that Quincy dad had towards him(concerning him having the potential to be better).. Quincy projected that onto Monica.. He sees himself in her.. but the way she accepts herself and fights for herself reminds him of what he lacks; he lacks a type of 'warrior spirit' that hes been taught he spose to 'just have' in him because hes a male/man.
