    when i was younger i thought this was THEE love story 🥴 yk them growing up together and then falling inlove as adults , i thought it was so cute but now as an adult I realise Monica fell harder and cared more

    • @HeitCheri

      I admit that I am a romantic, and I ate this up as a young person. Now I see it through different eyes, but I'm not convinced that she fell harder and cared more. I think what you see is immaturity. Think about their ages. Quincy fell hard and cared a lot, BUT he was very immature. When adversity set in with his parents marriage challenges he fell apart and lashed out. He was on some only child, never faced real adversity type stuff. He cared, which is why he lashed out of control. He fell hard and she was his rock, and he measured her love for him by whether she would jeopardize her own college career to be there for him. He was wrong to try and measure her love this way.

    I’m blown away by the people saying they never slow danced!! I’m 30 and we for sure slow danced at all middle school dances and even in highschool when we were good for a good twerk session and at house parties and I don’t mean pretty Ricky type grinding (which also happened) but actual slow dancing at house parties (lol) there was ALWAYS slow dancing by the end of the night! I hate people missed out on that and I’m thankful I experienced it!😩 but let me keep watching lol

    I can’t believe I use to love this movie. I remember when I last rewatched this movie with my man, my man asked me why did I love this movie so much ? Quincy did not love her and wanted her to give up her basketball career for him. That was my wake up call. That’s when I realized that this movie wasn’t as great of a love story as I thought it was. Monica was also a major pick me as well. She fought for the love of a man who was with Tyra Banks character at that point. If a man wants you to give up what you love to be with him, he is not the right one for you. 🙄

    I have NEVER liked this movie, I always felt like it was pushing this narrative of black women having to sacrifice e their ambition and and aspirations if they want love with a black man. The idea that you have to be a submissive provider, that a woman can only be either career driven or have love, can’t do both and there’s no love after you leave “the one”. Just pissed me all the way off 🙄. Cause how tf did miss girl not find love in Europe 😂. Or while she was working her corporate job? Is Quincy the only man alive I don’t understand.

    • @HeitCheri
      @HeitCheri  4 месяца назад +4

      Hey and thanks for sharing your thoughts! ☺️ I think that the movie showed a number of different relationships... Both sets of parents, plus the main couple. In the end Monica did get the career and the man, so I'm not sure that the narrative being pushed is that the Black woman has to sacrifice to be with a Black man, as compared with any other man. The reality is that there is a certain amount of sacrifice from both parties in any relationship.
      Successful marriages require both people to create the terms and stick to them until they're ready to renegotiate. Everyone's marriage terms are not the same, and that's part of finding the right person... Finding someone whose terms work for you. This can be especially difficult when you're young and you haven't even discovered what your terms are.
      I think the reason why Monica didn't find a man in Europe was because of the language and cultural barriers. She had a translator just to understand the coach. She was very isolated there. Also, she was not very socially astute and didn't seem to adjust well to the new environment.

    • @bries285
      @bries285 2 месяца назад

      Facts ! I wish Monica would’ve moved on from Quincy it’s awful how it seems like black women always have to sacrifice for a black man that’s why I always said Idc about a man’s race character over color in my personal opinion

But you can tell he loved her from when she lost the game he was just as hurt as she was. Him wanted to know who he was going to prom with. A girl had to ask him to go to prom instead of him asking the girl. Remember, he took her virginity and could of left her but didn't because she was his best friend.

    • @HeitCheri
      @HeitCheri  4 месяца назад +5

      Heit and I just quickly discussed this and he agrees with you, but I think the attraction and being in each other's lives would have eventually led to other opportunities that ended with them getting together.
      The thing is, she got the letter, and she might've still kissed him first and they still would have gotten together. It wasn't just the dance. It was the attraction from her being dressed up and then both being excited knowing that they'd be in the same place for the next four years. If they were going to different schools, I don't think they would have continued their bond the same way.

      @@HeitCheri yeah i can definitely understand that, i could see them looping back to their relationship down the line. but i also keep thinking how much influence quincy's dad had on him (and i mentioned this on your last video how he over romanticized his dad but never actually listened to his words). and when their family fell apart, quincy's world--or what he perceived of it--crumbled...even with monica there. without going too much further into it, since that's going to be in your next video(s), i also wonder if they did get back to their relationship, how long would it have taken? or would that have been the same too (again, had monica not gone to the dance in the first place)?
