The title of the issue is taken from a 2009 book by evolutionary biologist and atheist writer Richard Dawkins, about the evidence for biological evolution. Dawkins also contributes to the album. Holopainen explained to HMV in March 2015: "I wrote him a letter a little over a year ago and explained what ideas we had for this album, mainly about evolution. Since one of the songs goes straight to one of his books, it felt like a perfect match to try and recite him on the album. A few weeks later, he sent me an email accepting the invitation."
"Later in 2014, we recorded his parts at Hats Off Studios, Oxford. This is a huge honour for us, as Dawkins is one of our greatest heroes and his writings have been a huge inspiration for the album."

This is Tuomas' Grand Opus composition. No worries Emp. Nightwish and Tuomas would never be so pompous to refer to Nightwish as The Greatest Show on earth. It is the story of the evolution of our solar system, the earth, and all life. You my friend are a big part of "The Greatest Show on Earth"!
If you had a lyric version you would better understand the story of this song. Troy was play a low whistle in the beginning.
Happy Birthday to the Queen! 🎉🎉🎊🎊🎂🎂🥂🥂🤘🤘

Marko's voice has quite some power in it, and he also once stated that singing in NIghtwish he didn't have to hold back, because Floor's voice is equally as powerful. Their harmonies are amongst the best in the music world.

Happy Birthday today to Floor. 🎂
The song is about the formation of the solar system, and the evolution of life on Earth. "The Greatest Show...." is nature and the Earth itself. Inspired by the book of the same name by Richard Dawkins, that's him doing the spoken parts. This and Wembley 2015 are the 2 versions most recommended, both are awesome, but with a few differences. here troy starts with an Irish Low Whistle, as opposed to guitar with EBOW there. Wembley is also indoors, so no fireworks, but Mr. Dawkins himself comes out on stage at the end to read the last spoken part, a quote from Darwin's book ,the Origin of Species, which is read over the end credits here. Lots of references in this song, like L.U.C.A. = last universal common ancestor, the last life form from which all life on Earth descends.
"Emppu better have a solo", lol, how about a piece of Enter Sandman? That was surrounded by other pieces of music, including by Christian Petzold, J.S. Bach, and some EDM.... The evolution of music.
    WE WERE HERE!!!!!
How is it 21 minutes? Because it was just that good.🤘🤘

Thinking about her majesty the queen of Metal I congratulate her to all she is and shows to us blessed people, who are able to whitness such a talent and greatness in our lifetime. Half a year ago I finally found the most satisfying voice ever heard. I had to reach 63 to discover what has always been missing in my life. So, that said, I am first time visiting a solo show of her on the 1st of June in Eindhoven/NL and although I have already visited more than 500 concerts during the past 40 years I never felt so excited about the date I will finally meet her.

Up until two years ago at the age of 56 I had not heard of Nightwish or Floor. That all changed after a friend persuaded me to watch and listen to "The Poet and the Pendulum" live from Wembley 2015. I was blown away then and have been ever since having had my musical world turned upside down and inside out. Phenomenal band with all members masters of their craft fronted by in my humble opinion the best vocalist that I have ever had the pleasure and privilege to see and hear. 🙏😊👍❤️

    Happy birthday Floor!
The Greatest Show on Earth isn't this performance: it is the evolution of life on Earth.
Troy played Irish Low Whistle at the beginning and loved on to Uilleann Pipes.
Comments from Nightwish on the making and some notes on the song itself:
Troy: At some point we ended up watching Richard Dawkins lectures on the internet. After a while I suggested, half in jest, that maybe we should ask Dawkins to be our special guest on the new album.
Tuomas: It was an amazing idea, and I immediately started wondering if we could really make it happen.
Jukka: We were naturally a bit sceptical, too - we had to try and ask him of course, but it was better not to have such high hopes. Dawkins had pretty much shied away from popular culture apart from one episode of The Simpsons.
Troy: I enthusiastically assured them that I can make this work, like "You'll see, guys". Well the next morning I wasn't feeling so confident any more and I remembered Tuomas and Jukka going "Told you so"
TUOMAS: Still, there was no way we could let it drop without at least trying. So we started thinking about a proper manner to approach Dawkins. We decided our best option would be to send him a hand-written, polite letter, where we would tell him about the band, the scientific themes on the forthcoming album and the fact that he had been a great inspiration
TROY: We got no reply, so we sent another letter. In the end, I guess we had a bit of luck, because it turned out Dawkins personal assistant knew the band and actually liked Nightwish. He suggested that Dawkins should take our inquiry seriously
TUOMAS: I was in Paris doing interviews for the Scrooge album. When I got back to the hotel in the evening. I noticed there was an email from Dawkins, something like, "1 went to the internet and browsed your band, and what I heard l liked very much. So I'd be happy to co-operate.
FLOOR: Tuomas sent us a triumphant message: "You won't believe what just
    happened: Dawkins said yes!"
TROY: It was obvious from the start that Dawkins' appearance would attract a lot of attention - both positive and negative. His book God Delusion had created a worldwide controversy. after all.
JUKKA: We didn't invite Dawkins to be on our album to criticize religion but to speak as a scientist: an evolutionary biologist. Of course neither the fans nor anybody else outside the band knew it at that point.
TUOMAS: There has been a lot of unreasonable criticism hurled at him for all kinds of reasons. A lot of people seem to ignore the fact that Dawkins is also happy to listen to contrary opinions and is always open for new ideas. In that sense, he's like Esko Valtaoja, with whom we had the honour to work on Showtime, Storytime DVD.
I had endless possibilities in my hands for "The Greatest Show on Earth" What is the sound of crumpling continental plates that mountains are made of? Or the disintegration of radioactive components? Or the sound of space particles bombarding the earth? And how would I refer to immortal works of music composed by man? Well, I included shades of "Dies Irae" by Thomas Celano, "Toccata" and "Fuga" by Johann Sebastian Bach, banjo music from Western movies, "Rock around the Clock" by Bill Haley & His Comets, and "Enter Sandman" by Metallica. I was also thinking about borrowing "Sandstorm" by Darude, but in the end, we just went for an unrecognizable techno loop.
    Also Petzold and Bach.
    Recording - and Jukka Resigning:
MARCO: Kaitsu handled the drum parts admirably, so we could continue with the other instruments right away, This time we tried to concentrate on one song at a
time and kept on working on it till we felt there was nothing more we could add.
TROY: And we didn't even have thunder. Rauhala does not have the best sound proofing in the world, so it would have been pretty challenging to mike the instruments if there had been rain and thunderclaps.
TUOMAS: I actually got off easier than I expected, because a lot of the demo keyboards from Hämeenlinna were good enough to be included on the album. The stuff in "Sea-Worn Driftwood", part five of "The Greatest Show on Earth", for example, was salvaged straight off the demo. In Hämeenlinna, I had explained to Tero that this passage would be about "whales singing and rats taking over the world". I had just come up with that improvised stuff, and it made it on the album
MARCO: Recording the vocals was teamwork in the best possible sense, no matter who was behind the mike. We kicked around suggestions and tried out all kinds of last minute ideas. Like, "Hey Floor, throw in some of that sweet upper octave of yours in the second verse...
    Yeah, that's a nice touch!"
FLOOR: Marco kept on surprising us. He might just suddenly say, "Wait, I have an idea!" Then he'd pull out his bass and introduce an excellent harmony
MARCO: It was great fun recording the vocals. I've never had the chance to impersonate a troglodyte in front of a microphone before, so creating gorilla sounds for "The Greatest Show on Earth" was pretty hilarious. I didn't want to undermine the majesty of the song in any way, but I didn't exactly do it with a straight face, either!
TROY: I recorded my own ape grunts at home. To get in character, I took off my shirt, banged my chest with my fists, and pretended I was an ancient Homo Erectus. I think my wife was a bit worried
MARCO: I cut my bass parts pretty quickly in about one and a half days. I even got a bit lazy towards the evening of the first day - if I had really pushed it, I might have been able to complete them in a single day.
    Notes:
The first part, "Four Point Six", is a reference to the age of our planet -in billions of years. The journey starts with a simple but persistent keyboard theme, interrupted by massive thunder claps - the origin of life that despite the murderous bombardment by asteroids, sprouts time and again and finally manages to grow permanent roots. The word "archaean" in the lyrics refers to the Archean Eon, the first of the geological eons of the world (Gaea).
The second part of the song chronicles the birth and the first on Earth. "Enter Luca" is a reference to an early life form, an acronym for the Last Universal Common Ancestor. We can make assumptions about the characteristics of Luca and other early life forms by reading the DNA of current organisms: "There's a writing in the garden, leading us to the mother of all."
Right from the beginning, one of the key characteristics of living cells has been the ability to sense their environment and react to their perceptions: "Ion channels welcoming the outside world."
In the third part, chronicling the age of man, there's a fascinating reminder: All of us current organisms are descendants of an
unbroken lineage of winners. "Not a single one of your fathers died young".
"Little Lucy of the Afar" refers to the famous fossil of Australopithecus Afarensis that was found in Afari, Ethiopia, a hominin that might have been the ancestor of man (genus Homo). In the long run, all species have the tendency to become extinct, and a fitting vision of the future of mankind is presented in the song, "One day'Il cease to be" On the other hand, man had earlier had "a dream to understand" and "[given] birth to poetry" . He wanted to leave his mark stating "We were here!" In the fourth part, man strives to understand it all, and Richard Dawkins takes up the story once again with a surprising claim:"We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. The explanation folows shortly."Most people are never going die, because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been herein my place, but who will in fact never see the light of day, outnumber the sand grains of Sahara."
In the fifth and final part, Dawkins recites the concuding words of The Origin of Species by Charles Darwin: "From so simple a beginning, endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved."
FLOOR: I felt real good after the final rehearsals [for EFMB] in a New York studio. There were obviously many challenging parts in the set - I'd have to be extra careful in the beginning of "The Greatest Show on Earth", for example because some of the phones rise from the back of the throat but "operatic vocals are produced in the front of the mouth

Amen to. that. And can u imagime that when i was. reading comments.in yt video where Tuomas is interviewed (english) about that time still coming human nature album. He was bery briefly just speaking about inspiration behind it, and what were some things that he get idea and inspiration for that. It was very normal Tuomas style speaking in english( there are small funny difference usually in his expression when he speaks finnish in interviews). Noyhing what he said in that clip, or his appearance were not indicating nothing more than his humble persona. and intelligence. Most if not allmost all comments about it was just confirming that. Still there were some armchair psychiatric or homemade profiler of people, who said that it was easy to see his narcistic traits and behavior. I am quite sure he was not a troll, but honest with his opinion. I try to tell him that regarding all the things that are well knowed about him, his close friends comments about him ( for example Alexi Laiho, RIP), that there are NOTHING that are anyway proving or even hinting his opinion about Tuomas. I dont remember how our debate end, but he was looking more and more jealous etc biased person, who really didnt have a clue, but was very good in creating his own facts to himself. What a sad case.
You dont need to love him, dont need to like his music or appearance, you can even hate him.. we are all different about this kind of things, and its good. But claiming that mr. Holopainen have narcistic personality can be classified lying!

Troy was playing the Low Whistle and then the Uilleann pipes or Irish Elbow pipes (Bellows under right elbow and bag under left elbow). The Greatest Show on Earth = Life. There is a history of music leading up to Enter Sandman by Metallica including throat singing, harpsichord, Dies Irae, Minuet in G major by Christian Petzold, Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565 by Johann Sebastian Bach. Evidently at first the song was hours long and Tuomas cut it down to 40 mins and then they managed to get it down to this length. Difficult to get the history of Earth into 21 minutes or so. Incidentally the 2 firework parts were the big bang and then the creation of the Earth.

The Greatest Show on Earth is one of the BIG Songs of Nightwish and this is my favorite version aswell.
The song poetically traces the history of our planet, from its primordial beginnings 4.6 billion years ago to the present day, highlighting the fascinating and often awe-inspiring chain of events that have led to the diversity of life.
The song reflects upon their own place in the grand spectacle of existence.
Nightwish drew inspiration from Richard Dawkins’ book “The Greatest Show On Earth: The Evidence for Evolution,” which explores the scientific evidence for evolution and the interconnectedness of all species.
It is said this is truly a Journey through time and it really is!
Thank u so much for doing this Epic song and hopefully there will be more! 🎩🤘🥰

@Emp Reacts: Bro, this isn't just any show, let alone any song. This song is a 24-minute love letter from Tuomas to humanity. It is his magnum opus, the greatest work from our "Metal Mozart."
This song has the same name as the book by author Dr. Richard Dawkins, a British evolutionary biologist. This song is Tuomas' way of taking 14.8 billion years of universal history, including the 4.6 billion years of Earth history, and distilling it down into 24 minutes.
And should you think about it, the following quotations put into perspective how unique and special Earth really is:
"We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Sahara. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton. We know this, because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA so massively exceeds the set of actual people. In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here. We privileged few, who won the lottery of birth against all odds, how dare we whine at our inevitable return to that prior state, from which the vast majority have never stirred?" ~ Dr. Richard Dawkins, _The Greatest Show On Earth_
"Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there -- on a mote of dust, suspended in a sunbeam." ~ Dr. Carl Sagan, _Pale Blue Dot_
Taken together, these two quotations really are mind-blowingly awesome. They give new meaning to what Floor says, at the end -- these three words:
    "We Were Here!"

Nightwish would never name a song 'The Greatest Show on Earth' meaning the actual song or their show, it's about the subject. Evolution is the greatest show on earth and it was the name of Dawkins's book. Tuomas smiles a little shyly because Finns are terrible at receiving compliments but of course pleased if they receive one. He never wants to draw attention on himself, he doesn't even want to release a single song under his own name instead of a band/project. That's very Finnish of him, since we are taught from very small that it's not a virtue to show that you're better than anyone else.

May be only Nightwish is able to take science books about the evolution of life (by Dawkins and Darwin) and make a music masterpiece like this of them. Many thanks to Prof. Dawkins for supporting them and even speaking the parts from the books by himself.

  • @stpfs9281

The title of the “song” is also the title of a book by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins:
"The Greatest Show on Earth - The Evidence for Evolution."
Troy gave it to Tuomas, who read it, and it inspired the entire album Endless Forms Most Beautiful.
That album name is in fact part of a quote from Charles Darwin’s “On The Origin of Species”.
The narrative parts of the song are actually spoken by Professor Dawkins himself.
Lots of "Easter Eggs" hidden in this song.
    "For giant mushroom clouds.
The will to do just as you'd be done by.".
    Mrs "Do-as-you-would-be-done-by", Charles Kingsley,
“The Water Babies” a positive parody of “On the Origin of Species”!
I don't know of any other bands who have been given the freedom of The Natural History Museum, for their album photoshoot!

The last song of the last concert of their world tour… in their home country. They left everything they had on the stage that night. This performance of TGSOE is hands down the canonical version of this song. I know many prefer the Wembley version for a variety of reasons. Not me! The majesty and gravitas seen here trumps anything Wembley offers.

Although you are very enthousiastic about the music, you do not realize how deep the meaning/message of this song is. Please, please, read the lyrics and have another view at the video! It will deepen your experience of this music even more. And that is what we seek in music. Thanks for your reaction.

    Happy birthday to our queen..
Great reaction, I just wish it would have been the Wembley version, I much prefer that over Tampere..
I feel Troy on the E-bow is just better suited for the start, and the ending with special guest 'you know who'..
Yeah, Tampere has fireworks, but meh..

I prefer the whistle in Tampere version to E-bow. To me whistle is more natural sound and older sound and fits better to a time before life. Also suits the theme better because in musical evolution that whistle came before string instruments. Just my opinion. E-bow could have been used later in the song or first uilleanpipe and E-bow after that. This switch would have ruined the fast tempo part of song where uilleanpipe is included.
I prefer Floor's dress in Tampere, because it is linked to the theme of the song. Floor has a better lighting on her in the beginning in Tampere.
      Makes her look more mysterious.
As a small detail I like that they show Floor's face in Tampere version when she said "enter life". There are some other things I like better in Tampere versions. Fireworks of course being one. And the long stage is nice.
Wembley has a lot better primate noises. Troy is also shown more in Wembley. There was something else too, but don't remember right now. Oh yeah, Dawkins himself of course. He gives a plus to feel factor for Wembley.
I think that Tampere for visual and feel and Wembley for the music itself. Good thing that people have different opinions. Life would be boring if everyone had the same opinion. There would be only one type of music existing and one type of movies etc. Probably would still be living in a stone age or something because without new and different ideas, there is no progress.
      Both great versions anyway.

I am calling to all you people who are reacting to any performance that they can find! However, when you project yourself to 3/4 of the screen and only 1/4 to the artist, when doing a review, it shows to me that you value YOUR vision on screen, more than the artist! I know that it is YOUR reaction on YOUR Channel! But pls remember, you as an individual are responding to a band that provides music to probably millions of people......are you in the same position with just over 6000 subscribers??? NO, I DON'T THINK SO!!! So how dare you put yourself to be "above" them? And only give them a quarter of the vision, PLUS the ability to cut them off ANYTIME you want, only to give some kind of lame comment because your IQ can't give any better??? It pisses me off that YT, doesn't do anything about this. It seams that it's only interested in numbers....! But anyway, after my expression here, i feel i do have to do the right thing and listen to what you have to say! So pls, go ahead, and do what YOU think needs doing! However, i hope that what i've said before, will make you think! Cheers and enjoy the music, as that is what it is all about!
