- Here are 10 thing I wish I knew in my first year as a BCBA.
These are the topics, tasks, and situations that we don't discuss during our ABA program, but we tend to learn them by experience. Well I am here to share all the secrets, and shed light on all of the idiosyncrasies of our job as Board Certified Behavior Analyst.
1. You will be expected to write treatment plans and conduct assessments on your own
2. You may be expected to participate in several criminal background checks, TB tests, drug screenings, and fingerprint verification
3. You are now governed by our ethical codes and you are a mandated reporter
4. Required to participate in ongoing safety or crisis prevention training
5. As a BCBA, you will continue to study and research so don't throw your books away.

Hey Dom! I just wanted to take the time to celebrate YOU. You are definitely an invaluable resource. I have a daughter that is autistic and she has introduced me to a new world that I never knew existed. I watch your videos and soak in all of your advice. I am currently a TA at a special needs school and I want to do more in this field to help me better understand my daughter as well as those that are like her. I just want to help. I have had so many lonely nights of uncertainty and I just want to be the light for someone else that you have been to me. I am currently in the stages of researching online BCBA programs and finding one that I best suitable for me. All of your advice I so greatly appreciate and will definitely reference in the future. So I went to the Chicago school of professional psychology. It’s a great school, would highly reccomend, buy it is more expensive than some of the other programs. Here is link from a BACB on their top schools with high passing rates

Can you share/make a video on CEUs? How do you personally keep track of them, how you choose them, how do you fit them in to your life/schedule (so we’re not cramming last minute 🙃), etc?

Being a mandated reporter out me in an uncomfortable spot with some friends. It changed who I associate with because I never want to be put in the dual position again.

Where can I find more info on becoming a BCABC? I altrady have my 4 yr degree. I don't want to go for a Masters.
Again can you write off the mileage? Does it depend on the contract? How often are you deemed a independent contractor or doing business as a sole proprietorship/versus employed?
Yes I definitely write off my mileage. They even have apps that accurately track your mileage. When I am full time, I don’t write off my mileage because the company will reimburse me. I have been an independent contractor or a non full time employee at least 75% of my BCBA career. This also allows me to run my own business.
Hi Dom! Do you provide supervision for RBT’s?
I haven’t in the past. But I’m open to it.
What are the essential materials you need once you become a BCBA?
Assessments, a BIP template, liability insurance, data collection software (this varies from agency to agency) but if they don’t have one you have to be competent in making one for yourself. Continuous access to literature and articles. Just to name a few
