Well I’m glad we found each other!!! Congratulations on your first year! I hope to connect with you in the future. Maybe host a meet up in Chicago in the future. I think community is so important. Thank you for watching.
Hey Dom! I just wanted to take the time to celebrate YOU. You are definitely an invaluable resource. I have a daughter that is autistic and she has introduced me to a new world that I never knew existed. I watch your videos and soak in all of your advice. I am currently a TA at a special needs school and I want to do more in this field to help me better understand my daughter as well as those that are like her. I just want to help. I have had so many lonely nights of uncertainty and I just want to be the light for someone else that you have been to me. I am currently in the stages of researching online BCBA programs and finding one that I best suitable for me. All of your advice I so greatly appreciate and will definitely reference in the future. Thank you for being you. And I wish you luck in all future endeavors ❤
Wow! Jamie 🥹 (who’s cutting onions). This message really touched my heart. I know that we share a lot in common and feel like I can connect with you as a mom, a black mom, an autism mom, a driven mom, a can’t stop won’t stop mom 💪🏾. So I went to the Chicago school of professional psychology. It’s a great school, would highly reccomend, buy it is more expensive than some of the other programs. Here is link from a BACB on their top schools with high passing rates www.bacb.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/BCBA-Pass-Rates-Combined-211129-a.pdf I hope this helps. Please keep us posted on your journey! 😍😍😍
The part u said about family calling is soo true😂. Im just finished my 1st semester of the bcba coursework and i am always helping family and friends with behavior-related topics
I have been watching your videos since I began my courses! You inspire me so much Dom, and make me so much more excited for my chosen career! I cannot wait to become a BCBA. Thank you for sharing your experiences and for all the passion and information you pour into your videos! You are so incredible! ❤️
Thank you KK for your kind words. I am so elated that you enjoy watching my videos and that they excite you to keep pursuing. Comments like these reinforce my behavior to keep sharing my story. Well now you for me all emotional 🥹😁🥰
So many bags!!! lol I felt that so much 😭 appreciate you dropping this video and diving into this topic. There’s plenty out there to become a BCBA but not enough on when you are already one so thank YOU for sharing your experiences and putting in the extra work to share general information. We (current BCaBAs/BCBAs) appreciate YOU!!!
Dom, I found you on RUclips before starting the BCBA program and here I am before I sit for the big BCBA exam. Your videos have been a blessing throughout this journey. I thank you so much for sharing and inspiring me to keep going.
Awww Tania!!! Don’t make me cry 🥹. You will do wonderful! Thank you so much for your support. Please keep me posted WHEN you pass. So we can celebrate you
Can you share/make a video on CEUs? How do you personally keep track of them, how you choose them, how do you fit them in to your life/schedule (so we’re not cramming last minute 🙃), etc?
Hey Kiannesoto! Great suggestion. Here is a video where I share a lot of tips on how & when to collect them. This is in preparations for recertification, but I think can be useful anytime ruclips.net/video/d1LqgKMGmUw/видео.html
Being a mandated reporter out me in an uncomfortable spot with some friends. It changed who I associate with because I never want to be put in the dual position again.
Hello I just passed my test this past week! I saw one of your comments you said you’re an independent contractor what does that look like? I’ve always worked for the usual autism agency but I would want ideas of different ways to use the BCBA license. Thank you!
Hey! First of all CONGRATULATIONS!! Second, an independent contractor is more of those part time BCBA roles on Indeed. I predominantly worked with the adult population in IL, so there is a lot of opportunity for that. You may also see it in smaller agencies.
Do you think it's better to take a job that offers paid RBT training while in school for your BCBA or just go to school and apply for jobs after graduation? Little background of me: Married with young children and currently earns the highest earner in our family. Taking a lower paying job would be super super tuff but I'd rather make a decision for the long term instead of the present.
Great question personally, I would take the paid RBT job while in school but only if they also signed off on my supervision hours, that’s a must. This way you’re getting paid you’re getting through your coursework and you’re getting supervision all at the same time so by the time you’re done with your coursework, you will be ready to take your exam. That was my experience, and I was also a mother of young children and a wife. I hope this helps.
@domthebcbamom6679 Yes, it helps, thank you. You have given me much to think about and plan. After reviewing a few of your videos I feel much more equipped to make a plan then I ever have.
Again can you write off the mileage? Does it depend on the contract? How often are you deemed a independent contractor or doing business as a sole proprietorship/versus employed?
Yes I definitely write off my mileage. They even have apps that accurately track your mileage. When I am full time, I don’t write off my mileage because the company will reimburse me. I have been an independent contractor or a non full time employee at least 75% of my BCBA career. This also allows me to run my own business.
I came across your video because I’m looking to change careers and I was thinking about pursuing BCaBC Certification but all the videos I come across are young people and I’m a woman of a certain age. I’m just wondering is there like a age limit where you should get into this line of work and if so why do you believe that?
Great question. Personally I know BCBAs from 24-60 + but I think the average age of a BCBA is 35. Depending on who you work with. this job may require a bit a physical “play” especially if you are working with kiddos, sort or like a teacher mixed with a play therapist. As we get older some of us don’t want to get down on the floor and play for hours or keep a client safe who is attempting to run away or hit themself. Yes these are extreme examples but it happens. However I hope this doesn’t discourage you from entering into the field. You don’t have to work with kids. You can work with adults, or teach. I don’t think anyone is too old for this field. Wisdom and lived experience definitely needed. I hope this helps. Oh, and I think the younger ones are the ones creating content about their jobs.
Assessments, a BIP template, liability insurance, data collection software (this varies from agency to agency) but if they don’t have one you have to be competent in making one for yourself. Continuous access to literature and articles. Just to name a few
It is just so good to know there are BCBA'S out there that look like me. I def need a community. #1stYearBCBA

Leaving toxic jobs!!! This is so powerful. It’s ok to leave. Always.
I had to learn that the hard way. Thanks for commenting.

What are the essential materials you need once you become a BCBA?
Assessments, a BIP template, liability insurance, data collection software (this varies from agency to agency) but if they don’t have one you have to be competent in making one for yourself. Continuous access to literature and articles. Just to name a few
Please share your expenses😅
Well now I must!
Let me go get my good calculator and I’ll tag you in the video
Hi Dom! Do you provide supervision for RBT’s?
I haven’t in the past. But I’m open to it.
Is vaccination a requirement at the workplace or school?
Not to my knowledge. But some places require a TB test, background check, fingerprint check etc
I’m looking to become one, subribed
