- As a BCBA & Supervisor, I get asked so many questions about Supervision Fieldwork Requirements. So I decided to reference my BCBA Handbook, combined with my lived experience and professional feedback, and create this video that has everything you need to get started with supervision.
1. First you have to find and start your qualifying behavior-analytic coursework
(www.abainternational.org/vcs/...)
2. You can also start identifying your approved Supervisor
(www.bacb.com/services/o.php?p...)
3. Sign a supervision contract and identify roles and responsibilities
(www.bacb.com › uploads › 2020/05 › Sample-Supervision-Contract-1)
4. Determine the amount of hours you want to complete each month (20 min -130max)
5. Direct hours cannot exceed 40% of your total hours
6. Document your hours

Hi Dom I love your video! It's very detailed. Would you be able to do a video on a template of how to track hours. It's confused how theres different categories of unrestricted and restricted/supervised.
I can’t definitely try. What template are you currently using?
I'm about to start my program May 17th!! Wish me fortune!! By the end of next summer, I plan to be on my way!🤩
👏🏾👏🏾
Almost finished with my bachelor's in Psych. Looking into BCBA grad schools. I'm a little concerned that we're supposed to have a job and get experience before BCBA graduation? I live in a small town and not sure how I'll find opportunities to get experience. I al definitely interested in having you supervise me when the time comes! Loving all your videos!
Congratulations on almost completing your bachelors in psych. That's my background as well. So you don't 'have to' get all of your supervision hours and experience before graduation. For some people, in certain environments, that's not feasible. But I will encourage you to share those concerns with your professors or counselors when you do begin your program and get their insight. Even if you have to pace yourself ( which is totally fine) do not exceed 5 years or you may find yourself starting over.
I have a question about supervision as I just started the program .
I started accruing my hours January 22 (end of the month). My schedule is Monday through Thursday 4 hours of work each day. I worked total 7 days in January, was supervised 4 times, 31.67% of supervised hours, with total 30 hours for that month.
I marked that fieldwork included prorated hours for a partial month and checked concentrated fieldwork. Did I do it right? Why do we count prorated hours if we didn't work full month? Please help. Thank you
Dom can I do restricted and unrestricted hours at the same time. Remote unrestricted hrs /school district hrs with restricted hrs.
It is allowed ?
How do you opt for concentrated program? Does it depend on the grad school you choose?
Hello Dom,
I'm in my second semester of my masters degree. I've been an RBT for 5 years I'm burning out. What are your tips tricks and advice?
Hi Dom! What if you go over the 130 max hours of supervision for the month? could the additional hours still be counted?
Unfortunately, until the new guidelines come out (which will increase the max to 160) only 130 of those hours will count. So if you can, pace yourself and possibly save some unrestricted task for the next month.
Hi Dom, can you explain the 5 consecutive year part for supervision hours?
I already completed my ABA masters degree. Therefore, does this mean I have 5 years to complete my hours starting from the year I earned my masters ? Or am I able to start collecting hours anytime (3 years 8years from now ) and finish within 5 years from the time I started collecting ?
Thank you !! I’ve been so confused!
So much can change within 5 years. The last time the BACB made a change to the requirements and increased the coursework, so with that being said, I would get you hours done as soon as possible. That is a tricky question: does the 5 years start once you’ve completed your program or once you’ve started your hours 🤔? I would say your documented hours cannot be outside of the 5 year window. Meaning, hours you collected in 2015 won’t count. I hope this make sense. You can also confirm with your professor if you’re in school or refer to the BACB standards handbook. Great question BTW. Thanks for watching
Hey, love this! Would you sign a contract with a company that says you have to work for them for two years after the completion of your gaining the hours.
🤔🤔 hmmm let me think…. That would depend on many variables. If they can ensure you meet the requirements for both restricted and I restricted hours for free, at a pivotal time in my careers and they were a solid company with integrity that aligned with my values….. maybe. Two years will fly by (I’ve done it before w/o knowing). But if you are already having trouble at the company, they are not keeping their word or giving your quality supervision, that multiple red flags. Every company has their own policies and procedures for a reason. You just have to identify if you want to play their game, and if their behaviors are aligned with your values. I hope this helps
@@domthebcbamom6679 Thank you so much for replying! This was confirmation for me and I think I'm going to sign the contract.
I finished my 800 restricted hours but haven’t been able to do my unrestricted. I am finding it difficult to do since I work as an RBT in a school setting.. Am I able to get remote supervision for only unrestricted hours in a school setting?
My current BCBA is leaving this month.. Not sure if new BCBA would want to do fieldwork so I am looking into other options.
Have you considering finding a remote supervisor outside of the school?
Do you have a video about getting unrestricted hours from two different agencies but one didn’t sign my contract? Can I get a different contract with the other agency?
You can have as many contracts and supervisors as you want (maybe not all at once). It’s actually recommended. Remember to get your contract signed in the beginning and get your monthly fieldwork verification form signed after each month.
Dom, could you please tell me if most of the hours can come from classroom teaching? I'm considering my Master's in Special Education with BCBA certificate, because I would like the flexibility of having the option to do teaching during the school year with part time BCBA in evenings or summers.
Hmmmm that’s kinda hard to explain. 40% of your hours can be direct contact with a client or student in your case (only if consent is granted) but it has to be ABA procedures not just teaching curriculum. But as we know, both can go hand and hand. The other 60% must be indirect (w/o a client or student) doing things like creating data sheets, graphing data, conducting functional behavior assessments, and more. A great place to start is talking with your supervisor/principle to see if they will allow dual roles while receiving your hours, and finding a BCBA at your school who will oversee your work (for a remote supervisor like me 😁) hope this helps.
Thank you so much! I definitely plan to use a remote supervisor (hopefully you)!
My situation i have worked as an RBT for two years. I came in Master degree level could I possibly see if my course work would be suffice especially if my degree is Master of education specifically special ed? I also have a graduate certificate in special education
Your masters program should qualify your for the BCBA certification program (which is another masters program? But only 8-9 courses) I would call a university that you’re interested in and see if you meet the qualifications. At least you would know where you stand. And if you’re working as an RBT, you definitely should be getting supervision hours.
So if I’m not in the field, how would I get fieldwork supervision? I know there’s remote options but would that be considered fieldwork supervision?
Yes, remote is still fieldwork. This just all have to be approved by your BCBA
Hello, I wanted to know if you have experience on potentially transferring supervision hours to another state. I’m currently in NC and about to start online school. I want to be proactive and start supervision here but will likely to moving to Nevada soon. Will I have to start my hours over?
Will also love the opportunity for you to be my supervisor if possible once I’m enrolled in class.
You should not have any problem with continuing your hours. Most of my supervisees are in different states. We just have to document what state you were in when you collected those hours on your monthly fieldwork verification form and be sure to have your supervisor sign off on all your hours before you move. It may be harder to get in touch with them when you are no longer seeing them on a monthly basis.
How do we sign up for the consentrated program to complete hours at 1500?
You would discuss that with your approved supervisor. They would have to agree to meet with your for 10% of your total hours or 6 times per month
@@domthebcbamom6679 thank you so much!
Is this available online for supervision with you?
Hello, I was wondering what Masters you did for this career after your PSY Bachelors? Was it ABA or Social Worker or what?
Thank you!
Great question. I received my masters in psychology then took 8 additional ABA courses at the Chicago school of professional psychology to qualify to sit of the exam and obtain supervision hours
Thank you so much! I appreciate all your hepl! @@domthebcbamom6679
Hello
I begin my classes January 2024. Will be open and available for supervision hrs.?
Yes, we will likely have availability in January.
I work in aba already will that suffice
That’s a good environment to start accumulating your supervision hours. But until you identify and sign a contact to start earning hours, just working there won’t count. If you can’t find a supervisor at your current site, You can look into remote supervision while working there.
Can I get 130 hours a month on 99% unrestricted hours? That is my goal. I have one client I see once a week.
Yep!
Can all supervision be done online ? Remotely ?
Yes. With the proper consents and/or opportunity for observations
Dom I have my graduate degree already. How do I pursue BCBA? Do I just need to complete fieldwork?
Hold off on the fieldwork. If your masters is not in ABA, you would still have to go through the certification process, which is about 8 additional master level courses in the ABA department. I would contact a university (like the Chicago school of professional psychology) and just ask specific questions about your next step.
What is your graduate degree in?
@@domthebcbamom6679 My degree is in Social Work. How long there about does it take to complete these specific courses and is it costly?
can you get supervision in a school district
Yes you can. If you have a BCBA supervisor there that can monitor your work or a Remote supervisor.
But remember only 40% of your hours can be directly with a client or a student the other 60% has to be BCBA work (i.e., writing Treatment plans, analyzing data, creating caregiver training, etc.)
Hi Dom I want u to be my Supervisor
Hey Pamela, It would be my pleasure. Thank you for taking the time to book through my site. We will be in contact soon.

I believe the time starts once your start collecting hours, not the coursework. But feel free to email the BACB to clarify because I’m only about 89% sure
