    I think they should have professional to talk about the differences between Nationality, Ethnicity/Race (skin color) and culture. It would be so good to educate themselves and the public. ❤️

      Shelsie - People need to study their heritage and go to college and minor in History or a specific ethnicity to learn about themselves.
      A good example of culture is Black people, who claim to be Native Americans, who were not born Natives, but were cultured into the heritage. Many freed Blacks lived amongst Natives as a matter of protection from slavery.
      My bachelor's degrees are History/African American Studies and I studies African and Latin culture. I speak Swahili.

      R M - I have no idea why you misinterpret my post into my indicating that Black people aren't Native Americans. It's not what I stated at all. Repeat - some Black people weren't Natives but were Natives by affiliation.
      Both my paternal and maternal great=grandmothers were Native Americans (registered). My grandmother is from Charleston, SC. She spoke Gullah. From living with her as a child, I speak Gullah. My father didn't want us (my siblings and I) using my grandmother's dialect because he thought it was ignorant.

    • @consciousanfesiashapsnikof8688
      @consciousanfesiashapsnikof8688 5 лет назад

      R M - Most Natives bought slaves to protect them from slavery. Let's be clear about this because White racist scholars have tried to argue that Natives enslaved Black people. Some Black people willing migrated with Natives as protection from slavery, and they were never slaves.
      My paternal great-grandmother was one of a few Native American who owned land in the south. We still own most of the property today.

    People just have to understand the difference between race, ethnicity, and nationality

    • @kevinc3342
      @kevinc3342 5 лет назад +25

      It's pretty simple. Race = DNA, genetics, phenotype, and in most cases simply based on skin color (e.g. Black = African, Caucasian = European, etc.). Ethnicity = culture, music, dance, language, customs and behavioral practices, dress/attire, family customs and socialization, religion, political worldview, etc. BONUS: Nationality = citizenship tied to a specific country.

    • @gonaedeath2
      @gonaedeath2 5 лет назад +5

      @@kevinc3342 Race isn't DNA and genetics. Black People have a wider variety in genetics to each other than other groups. So race is ONLY skin colour.

    • @kevinc3342

      I really believe that "race" is made word to divide/ categorize people. Out of & 7 continents, over a hundred countries, a thousand language & dialects , ya''ll only came up with 3 damn races, black, white & mongols.. somebody lying

    • @kevinc3342
      @kevinc3342 5 лет назад +2

      @@cindyben3089 You're correct. Most countries had no serious concept of race, but mostly identified by ethnicity...until EUROPEAN contact. Race is a social construct developed by Europeans to "justify" their so-called superiority over other groups who literally had the potential to genetically eliminate Europeans from the planet. This was a major concern, thus a system of racial classification was necessary to emphasize a caste system that placed Europeans as "superior" to everyone else...when in fact all that really happened was they showed up and either murdered (via genocide) or enslaved other groups, steal their land, and extricate another country's raw materials for their OWN benefit and to everyone else's detriment.
      Slavery, colonialism, and imperialism are euphemisms and used as justification for this atrocious behavior. They love to call it "Social Darwinism" or "survival of the fittest." In short - they basically lied, cheated, and murdered their way to success. That's the history in a nutshell. Everything else they tell you is just fluff.

    I don't fault Adrienne because she said before speaking that she may need to go to a race class. And that she does lol! Latinos are made up of different things but most are mixed with white, black, or original Indian which we call Native Americans. Adrienne though has said she has mostly white in her heritage so boo you would be a white Latina, not Afro Latina sorry. Culturally she hung around black people but so did Eminem and he's still white at the end of the day. You still don't know what it's like being black so you can't just up and claim it because you have a small percentage in your blood. However for mixed people with 50% black in them they can say they are black like Tamera. But for the ones that pass for white it's their responsibility to acknowledge that I am black however I know I didn't have the same black experience as people that look more visibly black because I can pass for just white.

    being bi-racial (black and white) I have never been white enough for white people or black enough for black people. My complexion is on the fair side but I have features that I get from my black side. But whenever I was younger I would tell people I was mixed and they wouldn't believe me. It sucks because I have always been proud to be mixed. I never once said I was white or black...I say I'm mixed because that's what I am. I hate that people used to deny my race because I didn't fit their typical image of what a mixed person looks like (darker skin).

    Okay, Adrienne does need to take a class on race and at least she knows that. But she does not know the difference between race and ethnicity. Race is a social construct. It is not biologically sound. It was MADE UP. Race is about how you look. Skin color, hair texture, face shape, bone structure, eye color, etc. in addition to heritage.
    So, it does not matter if you are 7% African, 6% Asian, 13% Native American blah blah blah. In Adrienne’s mind, it sounds like she doesn’t think the white Latino box on the census applies to her because she has 7 percent African DNA. But Race does not work that way, it’s not a biological reality. It has nothing to do with what percentage of what ethnicity you are. It’s about how you look. And honestly, that number is not significant so I don’t know why she’s wrestling with this. She had a higher percentage of Asian Ancestry but never talks about that. And Loni is more European than Adrienne is African, does that mean she’s mixed race? No. Loni’s ETHNICITY would be British, Nigerian, Senegalese, etc. Her RACE is black. Adrienne’s race is not black. Being African is just a part of her ethnicity.

    • @kevinc3342

      It's pretty simple. Race = DNA, genetics, phenotype, and in most cases simply based on skin color (e.g. Black = African, Caucasian = European, etc.). Ethnicity = culture, music, dance, language, customs and behavioral practices, dress/attire, family customs and socialization, religion, political worldview, etc. BONUS: Nationality = citizenship tied to a specific country.

    • @kianah544
      @kianah544 5 лет назад +4

      Mandy Oh No. You can embrace all of your ancestry but you can only identify with that which applies to you. Blackness does not apply to Adrienne. It’s a part of her ethnic background, not her race. You can’t just choose your race. You can’t just decide to identify with a race that you aren’t. And DNA has nothing to do with that. Whether she wants to be or not, Adrienne is not black. Having African DNA doesn’t make you black, race is not a biological concept, it is a social one.
      Also, I don’t really want to get all into this because it’ll take too long. But I find it REALLY hard to believe that Adrienne’s identity is authentically dependent on recognizing her “blackness”. She didn’t even know she had African ancestry until a couple of years ago, and identifying with blackness goes beyond partaking in black culture. Blackness is MORE than just relating to black music, speaking black slang, having black friends, etc. I just don’t believe that Adrienne is emotionally invested in blackness in any way that’s organic or significant, because Adrienne is NOT black, she just isn’t, and the “superficial” aspects of our culture is not the extent of our experience, nor does it even begin to define our ethnic identities. So it doesn’t matter how familiar she is with black culture or black people for that matter, she does not have the experience of a black woman let alone a black person and she doesn’t understand what it means/how it feels to be black.

    • @kevinc3342
      @kevinc3342 5 лет назад

      @Mandy Oh To your question - "Would you call a dark skin Indian or Middle Eastern person black?" My response = Absolutely...dark/darker skin Indian or Middle Eastern persons are Black and are of African descent (by race) and with a DNA mix from other races. They're Black and Arab/or Indian...or simply Black Arab, thus denoting both Black race and Arab/Indian ethnicity. These same folk, however, may refer to themselves by some other identity. That's all well and good, but it's generally very easy to identify anyone of African descent. If in doubt, just ask. People have the right to self-identify race and ethnicity. It's difficult to deny African heritage if everyone else is looking directly at skin tone/color, but (as always) there are exceptions.
      By the way, the reason dark-skin Arabs are in the region in the first place is mostly due to being descendants of former slaves a la the Trans-Saharan Slave Trade. Anyone not descended from the slave trade are mostly immigrants from African countries.

    • @kianah544
      @kianah544 5 лет назад

      Mandy Oh The black experience is multidimensional, but I’m not sure that that causes a struggle to empathize with each other. For the most part, I think it’s the opposite, because I think our consciousness of race and blackness is fundamentally the same, regardless of how identical our life events are. Though I also understand that there are elements of the experience of black people in other countries that everyone can’t identify with. One example I can think of is that black people in the US and the Caribbean, and Latin Americans have an erased ethnic identity due to the slave trade. This is a unique aspect of the black experience that black people say in the UK or in an African country may not relate to.
      And I don’t know why black is mostly used for African-Americans, but I can tell you that race is an American invention and I guess people just never expanded the term, so that probably has something to do with it. My guess on why that is goes back to the erased ethnic identity problem. Black people from other countries tend to know what country they originate from. If they’re from Nigeria, they’re Nigerian. If they’re from Ghana, They’re Ghanaian. Even black people in the Caribbean have their own countries at this point. Black Americans don’t know where they came from, so unfortunately their race is more significant than their ethnicity, because they were robbed of their ties to it. So they just call themselves black. African-American is usually only used in formal settings or official documents and a lot of people don’t even like calling themselves that because hyphenated racial terms are usually only used for immigrants. But anyways, if I had to guess, that’s probably why.
      And finally, I think the black experience is all encompassing. That doesn’t mean everyone has the same experiences, but rather that the system of black oppression is consistent, irrespective of how it’s manifested. And if the all encompassing definition is too broad or too narrow to service you, you just have to customize your activism. I don’t think it’s difficult. I just think you need a separate conversation. A separate movement. A sub-movement within the bigger one. This reminds me of the 60s, where in America, black people in the north and south were fighting two different forms of racism. The system was the same, the consequences were different. So they had to have different strategies and platforms to fight it. And I don’t think this applies to all melanated people either. All melanated people aren’t black, and being a person of color and being a black person are two different things. Being Caribbean or being African doesn’t indicate race either. There probably won’t be any single discussion that could possibly comprehensively explain the complexities of everyone’s black experience (in a way that’s helpful). You gotta do that separately.

    The problem with the conversations of race is that race is a social construct. Race isn’t really real, genetically speaking. Race, ethnicity and culture are completely different things, but we often talk about them interchangeably. With black American people, who’s family has been in America for generations, most of the time the race they identify with matches their culture, but sometimes this isn’t the case and that’s when it becomes confusing like what Adrienne said. If Adrienne with her exact genetic composition was raised by two African American (culture) people , who’s family have been in America for centuries (ethnicity) then she would probably consider herself black (race). But she was raised by latino people (culture) , who’s (ethnicity)is from Puerto Rico, but she looks racially ambiguous (since there is no such thing as a Latino or Puerto Rican race). So technically she can choose what race she identifies with. She can be Afro Latina or white Latina or mixed race. For example if Amara La Negra says she’s black, no one would questions it because her outward appearance looks more typical to the black race, but she’s a Latina (culture) with Dominican (ethnicity). Society basically chooses your race for you. Think about it, there are people who look less racially black than Adrienne but are more culturally African American. We need to makes distinctions between culture, ethnicity and race when we have these discussions.

      @AS-kf1ol 5 лет назад +1

      @A. T. What are you even talking about? She used Adriennes Puerto Rican identity as an example what she is saying is universal. Race IS a construct. Also, even though Puerto Rico is a colony of the US, that has nothing to do with Puerto Ricans being its own separate culture and ethnicity. The thing that Adrienne forgets to mention most of the time is that she is Nuyorican. She's not from PR. Nuyoricans have their own culture that is not really Puerto Rican. It's a mix of NY culture with Puerto Rican customs. Many Nuyoricans don't speak Spanish. But that has nothing to do with PR where most people do not speak english and have a much more distinct latin American culture.

      @1sirenitaa 5 лет назад +3

      Hispanic is a term that was invented by the U.S. government to put down on the U.S. census. It defines that one is Hispanic if the speak the Spanish Language.
      Latino is what someone identifies as if they originate from a Latin American country (think Mexico and down) also Latin America and South America are different. South America is inside of Latin America because there are still Latin American countries in North America (Mexico) and in Central America (Guatemala, El Salvador etc.) as well as the Caribbean countries (ex. Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Cuba)
      Someone can be both Latino and Hispanic, or just Latino but not Hispanic (ex. Brazilians) or Hispanic but not Latino (ex. Spaniards)
      Latinx is a term that was recently coined by the younger Latinx generation. It adds the x at the end of Latino because it is meant to represent those who identify as Latino but are non-binary or are a part of the LGBT community and wish not to use the masculine form Latino, which in Spanish technically covers both men and women.
      I would say most Latinos/Latinx identify as such and are not using Hispanic as much anymore because it was a word that was invented by the government to claim us on a piece of paper. Latin people outside of the U.S. don't use Hispanic either, they identify as whatever their nationality is and as Latino.
      Hope this helps! : )

      @@deedee19951000 No that's a myth amongst black Americans because of the one drop rule system and how during slavery if your father is a slave you're a slave. But in reality, every human has 46 chromosomes; 23 from your mother, 23 from your father. You do not get more DNA from your father.

    I can't with Adrienne. 7% is no where near enough to claim black. 'You're cancer has a 7% chance of coming back' 'you have a 7% chance of passing this class'. You would drop that 7% any moment for a job opportunity or to get out of a parking ticket. I can't speak on Latino people because that isn't a massive section of Britain like it is in America and I'm sure that label has given Adrienne lots of experiences but I don't think you can claim black. Growing up around black people does not make you black. You have just absorbed some of the culture. You've been influenced by black culture. You need to explore your true heritage and be proud of that. Be the best ally to people of colour you can but don't ride their experience carrying your 7%

    I would consider Adrienne to be mestizo (multi -racial) which is the case of many Latinx people. The dna test episode which we’ve all seen, Adrienne was the most mixed. She had European, indigenous, African, and I think something else, but there was only 7% African and I believe that was one of her lowest percentages. I think it’s perfectly fine to identify yourself as biracial or multiracial if you don’t phenotypically fit into one category. So her race would be multiracial but her ethnicity would be latinx/Hispanic (correct me if I’m wrong, I think Hispanic may actually refer to the culture and Latin is just for ppl living in South America, Central America and the Caribbean.) Now Amara la Negra on the other hand is a very obvious Afro Latina. I wouldn’t consider Adrienne an Afro Latina. Just my 2 cents.

    • @G60J60F80
      @G60J60F80 5 лет назад +1

      Agreed. She's mestiza. Though in English "mixed" and "multiracial" don't have the same cultural cohesion that "mestizo" has in Spanish. Mestizo is a very specific type of mixing and is basically a creole culture. So many people in Latin America identify as mestizo, and have for so many generations, it's become its own thing--not African, not Black, not European, not white, not indigenous.

    I completely understand Adrienne's point of view! Honestly, I think a lot of Afro-Latins, Hispanics, and even Black Americans struggle with race and culture. For African Americans, especially, we are technically, a very mixed race that displays more of our African ancestors more than anything. Most African Americans in this country are 20-40 percent white and/or other, besides African American. But we were forced to stick to one identity, Black, which I truly love. But it does raise a lot of questions when regarding race, cultural identity and more amongst a lot of us. But every black woman's journey is different. For her, she is just discovering her ancestral history, which a lot of people are doing right now.

    Why do ppl keep saying the world is gonna be mixed by 2050. There a whole continent of black folk that don’t seem to be mixing and most likely will not ever completely mixed because we hold our culture so high and not many white/non African ppl seem to be down. Our elders don’t trust other races and our female elders are very critical when it come to marriage. We don’t divorce. If you do that is so rare. Marriage is not a game for us as it seems to be for white and black Americans, and having children out of wedlock is not an option. There spiritual ties that run very deep. I don’t think it’s gonna happen for Africans. Especially if the economy gets better.

    There's so so so much to unpack here. We need to do better at understanding global blackness. African Americans have a very limited understanding of how blackness shows up world wide. And many AAs loveee deciding who is or isnt black based on looks, culture, and/or upbringing. We NEED to talk about this.

  • @jasi7313
    @jasi7313 5 лет назад +3

    Adrienne - I see where your confusion is, hun. If you take a college class on race, here's what you will learn: Race is a social construct. There's no scientific basis for it. This is why you're confused; race is made up. Even if you look at the census throughout US history, you'll see different races being added and taken away based on the time period => social and political context. We'll probably in our lifetime see changes on the census regarding Latinos and Middle Eastern/Arab people, seeing as how these populations have grown, their places in American society have changed over the last few decades, and the dialogue surrounding these groups has changed.
    I am a Black woman. I have two Black parents, pretty dark skin, afro hair, full lips, broad nose. I am 100% read as a Black woman in America. When I traveled in Martinique (caribbean island with a wildly diverse Black population) and I said I was Black, they told me "you're not that black, your skin is kindof light." They had a completely different conception of race because of their own societal and cultural history, and there's no way to really dispute that because that's the only real basis for race - societal understanding. Similarly, I've had light skinned Black friends that traveled to Africa and were told by Africans that they're white, but by no means would they be considered white in America. Just continue to be proud of your culture, and continue to fight against injustices that people of color, and especially Black people, face in this country.

    While it's fair to look critically at Senator Harris's record on black people were also have to support her right to run. Being President as a minority is tough(Obama) So we're need to support those in our community who do get the chance to reach that level. What's more important is how we hold them accountable afterwards. We'll have the luxury to be picky when even more people can run w/o races being a big barrier.

    • @Sidra_193
      @Sidra_193 5 лет назад +5

      I don't think it's fair for you to be called racist because of that, that's not even related .. having said that, I think that sentiment may be there because people with historically marginalized identities now have the ability to reclaim those identities without the same repercussions as in the past, that's what proudness denotes, a struggle that has been overcome, so saying they're proud to be black or latina or native american or whatever is a tribute to that struggle. Whereas saying you're proud of being white might be misrepresented as racism because people would question, what would a group that has been the majority & benefitted from the oppression of others have to be proud of the basis of their race if not for the downfall of other groups? That's how it's perceived, regardless of what you intended, that being proud of blackness & being proud of whiteness don't carry the same weight because of the different histories associated with those racial groups. It's all about context, in this case I think people are more attuned to the bigger context, as an individual you could be proud of your family history or whatever you intend to be proud of, but when you make race the defining feature of your proudness, the historical context of your racial group will be pulled in as well.
