  • I was a little disappointed when this Lenovo desktop included an i3-4160 instead of the i5-4570 I was expecting, but when I tested it out, it performed better than expected. How well can it handle streaming games though when paired with a modern GPU? Let's find out!

What I like most about your computer videos is that you're not presented as a computer expert that can do no wrong. As a matter of fact, it feels like you're learning things as you go along and presenting what knowledge you have to us, the audience.
That perspective is so relatable and is such a breath of fresh air in a tech space where everyone seems like an expert and always on top of the latest and greatest tech.
Keep doing the stuff you're doing, man. You've definitely captured the audience that you deserve.

I had an i3-2100 paired with a 750Ti 2GB and to be honest I didn't know how I streamed (Single-PC setup), recorded, edited and gamed in it. It ran some relatively new stuff, like Valorant, GTA5, the new TrackMania, and edited 720p60 videos no problem.

A great little "life hack" for stuff like this, that I've helped set up for a lot of people in-need with lower-spec stuff, is a dual-system setup. see, trying to game and stream on the same machine can absolutely eat through system resources, but what if the machine *only* livestreamed? Thanks to a $20USD or less USB capture device off of something like Amazon, even something like a quad core embedded Celeron can be turned into a little streaming rig, happily capturing footage while your low-spec PC happily games away, all the while neither one is being taxed trying to do both. This technique works really well, and I've been using setups like this for a variety of "micro-budget workstations" for people in need. Take a low-spec system, give them two of them, hook them together with cheap switchers and a capture card, and you're done. Simple. Effective. Largely-affordable. it doesn't work for everyone, but it can work for a lot of people. My main rig is a 780Ti system, but my streaming rig is a micro-PC with a quad-core 2Ghz Celeron, meant for watching Netflix, and yet with some tinkering in OBS I managed to get it to handle 1080p 60FPS playback without breaking a sweat, making it a great little capture setup. Highly recommend.

For office and home use, the i3-4160 still rocks today. The i3-4160 uses 57W. Add a 30W GPU for x265 and/or 4K video playback. With this set-up, the stock PSU is big enough. Remember to install a SSD for the OS and other programs. 8GB RAM is plenty fine.

Also, I had some problems with cs:go and Msi Afterburner too. But it turn out cs:go doesn't like third party software. All you have to do to allow it is; go to steam > Right click cs:go > Click properties... > and at launch options type

I'm honestly really impressed with how much of a difference the E3 1231 v3 makes compared to the i3 4160.
My cousin has a very similar machine, a Dell OptiPlex 3020 MT. it currently has: i3 4130, 12GB DDR3 1333MHz and Quadro 2000 (Underclocked GTS 450 with worse drivers), 120GB SSD and 500GB HDD. he by some miracle creates RUclips videos on it. He has to use lower settings in games though to achieve this. He plays in 1440x900 resolution usually.
I'm gonna suggest one of the 4C8T Xeons to him for his next upgrade. Cheap, but performs great.
In my home server, I have an E3 1230v2 (i7 3770) and 8GB ECC DDR3. The CPU performs great, it even out performs my main system in pretty much every workload (E5 2650v1). You won't be seeing me using a rackmount server as my main PC lol.

Loved the video and it's concept! The only thing I will like to see is if you can benchmark every game without vsync if possible.
Also, for Minecraft I think is widely know that if you are struggling with fps you should get Optifine installed, apart for being a useful mod that lets you use shaders it is also helps you a ton with getting more fps in general.

    • @HardwareHaven
      @HardwareHaven  2 года назад +3

Thanks David! My original thought when determining settings was to try to find the smoothest experience, not so much get the most accurate data, which is why I used vsync in some titles. It wasn't until partway through that I decided to go ahead and use the xeon, so using vsync makes the comparisons less useful. And I considered optifine, but decided to not put the extra time into it. It probably would've made sense to though since I was trying to go for a more 'real world' experience. Thanks for the input! Hopefully I get better at this stuff down the road haha

Either those are some great deals you found, or it's a market thing (or both), but over here, I'd honestly go with an i7 4790 prebuilt from the start. Found one just now (HP) for 140 euros with 8GB ram and 1TB spinning rust (and a 320W PSU, which might be useful - or not). If I went with an i3, it would cost a bit less than the cpu difference (unless I've ordered a xeon from aliexpress - that would be a bit cheaper), but would come with 500GB drive and 4GB stick of ram. And of course, a worse cooler.
Now, if I'm really careful with auctions, rarely, but good deals sometimes do come. But still, not often.

I get free power so I have it mining about a dollar a day with the current price of Bitcoin lmao.

The case was butcherd but I had an old dell dimensions pentium 4 system sitting about with a dead mother board so I stuck everything in that upgraded the ram to 8gb stuck an a6 3500 in and an old AMD HD 6450 2gb gpu I had laying around since I got given the system it only cost me $6 for the 4gb of ram and the a6 I'm currently playing through my old disk games I can't get anywhere else like freelancer and alien v preditor 2 it's a really good mid 2000s gaming pc all it needs is an ssd

If I'm remembering correctly, you can turn down simulation distance, but keep render up. To relieve the load on the CPU.
Especially since Minecraft only uses two cores max.

hey friend, can you try a game called "osu!" ? a rhythm game with low spec but requires a lot much powerful pc to run smoothly (main required or minimum requirements are:
2 core cpu + 256mb ram + gpu 256mb vram with shaders) looks such an low end spec game but honestly it requires full +480 to 960 fps with 0.4-2.4ms input lag to play smoothly
i had i5 2400 + gtx 650 + 16gb ram and tried to stream it 720p60 but it was really stuttery and dropping fps, now i just want to know if this pc (i3 4th gen + gtx 1650) can stream 1080p60 fps with no issues

Because of absolutely no GPUs available out there, I game with my i3 4170 intergrated graphics - HD4400, it's quite impressive that it can output 4K resolution, and game performance is ok, it also handles graphics benchmarks quite well, at least web benchmarks like webgl water, webgl aquarium, html5 fishbowl and rendering complicated websites. The main problem that I found is when I play Minecraft Java (nowadays modern versions, with default settings, no shaders, texture packs and anything), they use up entire i3 4170 CPU and resulting in lags. I questioned why they are huge CPU hog rather than GPU, the HD4400 GPU idles all the time while the i3 is full, which results in my decision to upgrade to some nicer xeons out there.

For Minecraft Java, maybe you could do benchmarks for Vanilla, Optifine and Sodium respectfully.
Most people use performance/optimization mods for Minecraft Java because it is poorly optimized, and using Optifine or Sodium greatly improves the performance.

any i7 on that socket should still be more than capable of modern gaming and streaming, though perhaps not so much that you wont see slow downs from the streaming. If you get the best, the i7 4790k, it should still be plenty though. Of course, that would raise the price of the system by another bracket, since those things still go for 75-120 bucks. If anyone is trying a similar solution, I can attest to the usability of an i5 4590 and anything faster - though I wouldnt recommend anything slower if you want even an iota of headroom.

    • @HardwareHaven

I remmember i3 not being a good option for gaming even with the 4th gen (I remember it dropping to the 30s in online Battlfield 4). It competed closely with the FX-6300. Meanwhile today we have even cheaper i3-10100 which can handle almost all games at 60fps. Basically, old i3s were overpriced office CPUs.

Seriously don't take this the wrong way, because I definitely don't mean it in a negative way haha
I don't really care what they were back then, because they don't cost what they did then. Granted I wouldn't go out and buy one for a gaming PC. I just wanted to see if it could handle lightweight stuff, which in some cases it definitely did. It really all just depends on what the user wants their PC to do and how much it costs.

Nice video ! i got a question who may be interesting for a future test video. I had some class about pc hardware and how they work with eachother, and the teacher said that vsync is actually something that "eat" performances since the gpu and the monitor have to "talk" togehter to force the gpu to only get the right amount of image at the right time for the monitor to be perfectly synced.
Now the question is, is that true and maibe in some game like minecraft, you could try to deactivate the vsync and deactivate the framerate limiter. It may help the pc to get better performance.

I learned the hard way. Them old Lenovo computers have too much proprietary parts, and even more of a hassle is that there is no way to run a lot of graphics cards - due to the so called 'white listing' of allowable parts involving the bios that is hidden and inaccessible. Thats right, 99% of people are completely unaware companies like Lenovo used to add hidden code in the bios that wouldnt allow a lot of graphics cards to begin with. And there isnt a huge list of what graphics cards will work on them old Lenovos either. So to save someone from experiencing a ridiculous nightmare like I did by trying to add an rx 6600 to an old i5 4570 Lenovo computer...check into if a graphics card is confirmed to work with the computer before buying. And also think twice about just buying another motherboard if the graphics card isnt confirmed or is blocked in the bios, because the proprietary hardware of those old Lenovo computers become a huge problem aside from the cable problem with new power supplies...I actually had to buy another case along with the new motherboard and new ram for example...And you could also be in the same boat if you dont see this comment or run across the very few people aware of the many pitfalls of trying to chuck a decent graphics card and maybe new ram into an old Lenovo...So look into those things before buying an old computer for sure.
