I love how you make videos on these more low power pc's rather then just filming ryzen 9's and other powerful pc's all the time like other channels
Yeah me too, otherwise I would be broke by now haha
You should really check out random gaming hd for more low budget builds.
Agreed 👍
That's why I'm here to enjoy
@@Fly_By_Gaming yeah hes pretty good too
Nice! I always love seeing old tech come to life!
Me too!
I think if you debloated Windows the processor might have performed a little better. Glad to see you got the machine to post, Nice video
Really glad to see this working.
As you said, the possibilities are endless here with this being standard ATX.
I love how chill vibe this all is
Well here's a suggestion, the self-hosted password manager bitwarden, it's intended for business use, so it has fairly high system requirements, so the unofficial vaultwarden server is better for home users.
I switched to it a year ago when LastPass announced that free versions would be limited to only desktop or mobile devices, never both, they also went on to discontinue email support for free users, neither of those things were a dealbreaker for me, but they were making it clear the direction they were heading, no concern for any user who isn't paying while simultaneously jacking up the prices, but ignoring that, bitwarden + cloudflare has been great, in someways better than LP.
Truenas sever will be great on that board
You can also use it to run pfsense.
Just add some more compatible ethernet cards and you're off. Btw adding some sata dom (ssd) storage (for os) and using a pico psu will keep the power consumption and the overall footprint of the pc smaller.
Great vid, hopefull this idea helps
Thanks!
To be honest your videos are amazing! Continue your work!
another great video, glad to see that one running! looking forward to seeing what you do with it!
Man I was so hopefull about this little pc. Thank God ddr3l worked
Me too! Haha
Looking forward to seeing what you do with this!
Hey man! I'm loving your content. I think you're really underrated for the effort and work that goes into your videos!
Hey, thanks!
first ive seen of your channel, this is great stuff! subbed
Loving your content man!!
Glad to hear it! And thanks!
i discovered this channel 24 hours ago, nice to find this video i was waiting for
Good timing haha
This was great! Can't wait to see you turn it into a NAS.
I like to work on old computer, so this what you work is exelent!
I really enjoy watching smaller channels with great quality content - like yours!
Glad you enjoy it!
Fun to watch btw 🥺
I enjoy this video with tea 😀
fun fact
this video saved me from buying the wrong type of ram when i was upgrading my laptop
i double checked if my laptop's memory was ddr3l, and it was
i was about to order regular ddr3 memory, but didn't
so thank you!
"Because this board features a few x1 PCIe slots-"
Me: "Graphics card!"
"We can add in some SATA cards, network cards, and much more."
Graphics card relegated to "much more."
Trial and error, the best way to learn about PC's tbh. Especially when able to work with older / inexpensive hardware.
Very true
"a light 2d game, hollow knight"
I'm gonna just say *City of tears*
Your vid actually inspired me to turn my 4,1 dual cpu Mac Pro into a NAS using unraid. It also serves as a Minecraft and Plex server. 14TB in total 3,6TB drives and 2 1TB drives with room for expansion with 1 parity drive.
Heck yeah, that sounds awesome!
@@HardwareHaven they’re great machines if you look locally. I got mine for 200 bucks off of Facebook marketplace. Just be aware if you want to get the latest Mojave update you have to manually upgrade the firmware and get a amd 400/500 series gpu for it to work.
This is the best way to start a day.
Last video so much about compability with ddr3 and ddr3l so much fun to watch 😀
one of my first "modern" computers was powered by a J2900, I remember 10 year old me being very pleased about finally being able to play minecraft at more than 20fps
Idea for next video (if you don't have one already): passive PC for everyday use (not for gaming but Internet, some programs, RUclips), low powered but mid-performamce. Just idea. Or a proper NAS build made of this MoBo. But do what you want, great videos and great channel.
nice video! i think my cpu is better than the j2 something something something and i suggest maybe use a the pc for like backup if ur disk runs out of space.
From working at a computer shop. I've learnt that motherboards that take DDR3 RAM can be delightfully picky about which ram they'll actually post with. Sometimes they'll straight up refuse to post, other times they'll refuse to even recognise it in some extreme cases.
Generally I like to remove the ram completely and check for the "missing ram" beep code.
Good to know that that’s actually a useful troubleshooting method. Thanks!
@@HardwareHaven np.
Generally removing the ram and listening for the beep code can give you an indication that the CPU is actually executing bios code. Just note that some M/B don't beep if they don't contain ram or don't come with beepers.
Other rare reasons for a M/B not to boot is corrupted CMOS settings. It's rare, but it does happen occasionally.
Thanks for the info!
Great video, the possibilities are infinite for server usage with this type of motherboards .
You could have used a FCPGA946 motherboard, you can replace processors (i3 3rd/4th gen) and still get more pcie lanes and more performance
Again hardware u did gave a older pc a new life instead of being scrapped or destroyed...ur vids really have made appreciate older hardware...keep up the good work n see u in the next video..btw your intro song did u made it your self?the one titled haven
Glad to hear that! And yes I made the intro music 👍🏻
@@HardwareHaven where to get this stuff..are u on Spotify or have a separate channel
No I can put it on SoundCloud or something maybe
With the port selection this'd be an ideal Windows XP machine, having an old PCI slot means you can get proper hardware MIDI even.
Heya! I had the same motherboard as well as the same problem! Nice👍
HP did similar ATX powered AMD APU boards (at least in Europe) that are also DDR3L only. Got an A4 5000 and another A6 board that both need DDR3L and they're not even using SODIMMs. (Was looking for something as an always on remote access PC for connecting to my home network, CCTV etc, and these boards are low power, not TOO slow, and ridiculously cheap now)
Working in desktop/laptop support for about 22 years now, and the low voltage RAM was completely new for me too.
Hahaha okay I feel a little better
Nice work!
Thanks! But I’m just glad other people are smarter than I am haha
@@HardwareHaven wisdom of the crowd (as long as you ignore the screamers)
Ask one of the big youtubers for one of their "lucky box" GPUs and then chop mod it or open back mod the 1x slot, there may be a tiny bit more CPU performance if the graphics are not using the RAM - though probably not what you want if its going to be a power economical server
Nice way to reuse this motherboard. I once had a laptop that used DDR3L memory and it was a nightmare to get the right RAM. Almost everyone where I lived only sold DDR3 memory. 👍🏻
pfsense/opnsense machine right after the ISP's router.... low power draw but powerful enough for a small to medium enterprise network usage.... perfect for home use... and might as well run local dns hosting and pi hole on top of all of that.... taking your home networking to the next level without any worries...
If you want to go the Windows route consider using the LTSC branch, its more lightweight for lower end machines
I wonder how this would do as a Pfsense/OPNsense box.
Minecraft Java Edition server + Nextcloud + samba (for local network only) in one machine?
Hey, If I want to buy a low powered processor like the one here, where can I get a list of low powered cpus, or what should I search for? Whenever I visit a used hardware website, all I see are i3s 5s and 7s and the ryzens. Nothing low powered like the ones you find.
Perhaps a Web Server? Would love to see you set one up :)
you could use it as nas or pfsence , or torrent box , or all of them with virtualization ,
You should make an Odysee account, it automatically syncs videos and is on the blockchain so you don’t have to worry about youtube thanos snapping your content. I would love to see your channel on there.
Use that PCI Slot. There are still gigabit Ethernet cards for PCI slots out there. Also some SATA RAID cards, however, those tend to be SATA 1. Truenas wants 16gb of memory minimum, so you may need a upgrade there. But I could see this board being a better high speed router with PFSense and a couple of 2.5gbps network cards.
That should turn in to a great NAS.
Yeeah! I was right!
I'm so glad this thing actually works, but I have no Idea what you could use it for, since you already have a NAS.
I wonder if it would be better at decoding/streaming if you were to use a newer gpu on it.
True! And I have a NAS but I think I eventually want something a bit better and bigger, so this might be perfect
Perfect for a router build imo!
Can you try a x1 to x16 riser on this motherboard with a graphics card ???
Can you also try emulation ???
Adding a 1x PCI-E GT 710 would really improve performance. Those cards aren't powerful but still beat those older Intel HD graphics quite easily.
Could the j2900 run on 16gb of ram? thanks
Think it will do Plex? How about record some network IP cameras?
Hey, your theme musics give me a really good vibe for a long working day, where can i find it ? love to listen a full version
I REALLY need to post it some where.. hold on haha
@@HardwareHaven as a developer, your music and video really brought me back to the 199s - 2000 era when i was a kid and try to learn how to install windows 2000 on family's computer...
would be interesting to see how these low power cpu compare to a phone/android box/arm pc in power usage
Could be a fun video
I can't tell you how many of my friends have bought a system off the shelf similar to this one with the intent of upgrading down the road, only to find out they bought a laptop computer that someone crammed into a desktop case.
Yeah that's a bummer.. but it's not necessarily a bad product. It's just bad for gaming haha
Cut the pci e end and stick a low power gpu and try casual gaming. Curious to see how a 20w cpu would handle some games with a decent gpu
Can you put in a gpu in this pc?
Lol yes ddr3 is 1.35 and ddr3 is 1.5
This is a big issue with laptops being donated because they always put the wrong ram in their laptops.
Btw You can put DDR3L in a DDR3 system, but you can't put DDR3 in a DDR3L system, but I'm sure you know that.
I never thought I see someone else with that oem case!
Got a hand me down Compaq computer that has the exact case but with different specs though I think I remember it was worse then the one in this video.
Wanted to reuse it but the whole thing is riveted, Even the dvd drive..So I had to drill it out just so I can use my own spare parts in it. I found a new hate for computer cases like these.
i would love to see it emulate since the raspi isnt the best for emulation
Oh, he really get it a video titled ' youtube fixed motherboard '
For some weird reason old budget tech excites me more.
Same
Same
I'm curious how this performs as a NAS. I'm guessing you would not want to use this as a Plex server given then limited video.
Great video! I have a question as I am trying to use an old machine like yours as a server. These old machines can be really loud. If I try to put it out of sight computer cannot see wireless.
How do you deal with noise?
I would avoid wireless at all costs. It you can run wired Ethernet from your router/switch, that’s ideal. You can buy some flat Ethernet cables that can tuck under trim/rugs pretty well if you don’t want to run anything in the walls. And if that’s not possible, you can also look into a thing called power line Ethernet. Basically it uses your outlets and electrical wiring as a wired connection. Not as good as CAT5e, but better than wifi!
I’d also make sure it’s cleaned out well and maybe check if you can adjust fan curve settings in the bios
@@HardwareHaven I know power line ethernet adapters. I can give it a try, nice idea.
It is the $3 psu which makes the noise. Cpu fan is actually quiet. I have 2 nonworking 750w psu. If you plan to share psu repair videos, you have a viewer here:)
@ I doubt I'm qualified haha
I have a Dell XPS 2710 All in one that won't post at all. After reading around, I am fairly certain that I have the "black screen of death" allegedly caused by upgrading from Win8 to Win10. I have worked on it periodically over the last few years, but can't figure it out. Anyone willing to help?
Love this low tdp motherboard 😃
in a general sense, the pros over intel you will/would find in AMD based low tdp is that usually they are not limited in features; for example although I don't think anyone would be crazy enough to do it(except maybe a youtuber) it's quite possible to do 7 gamers 1 cpu on a Athlon II 160u amd even though it is a 1.8ghz single core am3 cpu where usually on an Intel equivalent it would quite possibly not even feature VT support or have some other limiting factor(intel tends to disable or bottleneck features depending on cpu class far more often than AMD does; **I've tried the passthrough on a 160u but not in this torture scenario :P)
Try turning into a router and compare it by stress testing it with an avg household router
Cut out the end of one of the 1x PCI-E slots and install a graphics card. Could make for a very good video transcoder.
Awesome video! How does it play / host Xonotic? (Windows or Linux). I found a Pi4 8GB gave better performance than a J1800 / A10-9630P but on Ryzen it works best.
Had to Google what that is, so no idea haha
@@HardwareHaven love the game. We play it daily and I think LowSpecGamer used it a few times.
Can u try running a minecraft server on one of these, maybe on Linux so the performance is better
If any of those motherboards have gigabit networking I would suggest getting a second network card and building yourself your own network router.
I used pfSense and It wasn't much more difficult than installing Linux on something like the Raspberry pi. I've got it blocking ads at the router level which is pretty cool, but you can also push all of your traffic for your entire network over a VPN.
I think a 10 watt TDP would be perfect for this type of application.
Definitely something I'd like to try out! I just had a 2.5 Gigabit card come in, so we'll see if I can find the time to get to it. That's the real struggle right now haha
Old PC, but performance and expand ability compared to a RaspberryPi is amazing.
good to know ty
Would make for a good platform for a pfSense router as well. A nice low-power motherboard with 4 cores @ 2.7GHz max.
For sure!
i really like to messs around with those low end boards. im the World record holder in Overclocking the Atom 330 ^^
Dang. Impressive
Did you need to update the bios from HP to the latest version? (Which is probably still very old.)
you love to see youtube comments actually being useful
I hope this channel continues to be a place where that's common haha
ayye randomgaminginhd got a free shout out here from 3:30 onwards
nice vid but I got the same problem with my pc so this might be able to help but can’t cuz gpu is Brocken…
I say if you get some kind of sata card for it and us it as a NAS.
In the works 👍🏻
This would be great for pfsense
The external PSU of the AMD system is most likely way more efficient fyi as it is not as "overpowered" as the Intel systems PSU
3:39 i have this exact computer. Thats crazy.
I did a similar mistake with my Intel NUC, bought ddr3 instead of ddr3l. But I was able to resold the ddr3 for a profit (+$1 after fees), so that's a win in my book lol.
Those low end amd apus are infinitely better cuz the gpu runs laps around intels low end. And older stuff really does run fine, think 2000s, need for speed most wanted, underground 2, etc. Still a great time.
6:19 wow a desktop with an external psu? that is strange!
My ProBook 450 G4 with an i7 7500U has a TDP of 15w. I mean for a laptop 15w is nothing. But for a desktop is the power that an HDD needs to spin
that ddr3l memory is literally faster than what i have on my pc.
I am thinking that a such low power CPU can run fanless. That can be a night PC. When it's nighttime sounds feel much higher, and a fan noise even small can be really annoying. So with that computer you can enjoy some RUclips without it. I am able to run Windows 11 + 720P60 RUclips smoothly on a Celeron N2840. This definitely is the best that CPU can do, my Core 2 Duo T9300 is noticeably faster, but it shows that your Pentium should be able to do much more.
Add a network card and check if this pc can work with a 2 pc gaming setup
My dell 7559 gaming laptop said only support ddr3l too
I have had problems with a pc that uses exactly that motherboard , it would overheat for no reason .
Nicee
I applaud your brave decision to install Windows 10 but you will struggle to give it away unless you put windows 11 on it.
I totally agree with you that many Americans would struggle with the confusion that is Linux, especially OpenSuSE. How about trying out BeOS that will get the most out of the hardware? It should be fun
it will probably be more wanted with windows 10 as apposed to windows 11
At my old PC I getting blue screen randomly, I test ram, it is ok, disks are ok, cables look fine, cinebanch work fine, add 2 fans and bigger cooler, do not overheat..so it is motherboard or PSU problem...
Dremel the edge of the X1 slot and shove a GPU in there for the lolz :p
