A few suggestions I'd like to offer, as someone who routinely optimized low-end hardware for Windows 10:
1. 2x2GB RAM instead (even if it's still single-channel, I've noticed an improvement over a single stick)
2. Lower-resolution monitor (something like 1024x768 or 1280x1024 still looks great when native)
3. Built-in Windows 10 Optimizations (Task Manager startup, Services, Performance menu)
4. Web Browser Optimizations (Opera is a great choice for multiple reasons)
5. Sometimes an obtuse BIOS setting (such as core locking) can allow for CPU voltage control
6. If you can get the voltage changed, a better CPU cooler, or even a molex CPU fan, can help temps
7. Emulators such as WinKawaks run well on Windows 10, even when there's no performance to spare.
As I'm typing this, I'm running Windows 10 natively on a 1 core, 1.4Ghz atom netbook, and thanks to the tweaking I did, it performs better than what I saw in your video. It's not to brag, just to show that there is performance on the table.

I love the *cough* low-key *Cough* humor, and I enjoy your old-tech videos! I might suggest a lighter weight operating system than W10 for old machines like this! Core Linux, Lubuntu, or Puppy perhaps. I'm not a windows fan, but alas I use it on my gaming rig. Thanks again for another fun video and reminding me about old APUs I'd forgotten about!

Thanks for posting this! I remember seeing a similar MSI board with the same APU, but didn't get it, and I'm glad I didn't. To be fair, I also have a first generation Zotac ZBOX with NVIDIA Ion.
I used to see these systems at Wallmart. 46/51 R15 score is pretty slow. I still use an AMD A10 7860k for media center use. I'm enjoying the reviews and subbed. Keep up the great work!

I had an MSI equivalent to this and has been my mother always on home office pc for 5 years back then with ubuntu or Mint MATE, it's a pretty fine office/video machine
I'd love to get my hands on one of these (the USB 3 variant). I think it would be great for a basic NAS box.

For a NAS box id get a Intel board like that since intel Idle power consumption is extremely low
I have a MSI e350n usb3 in a cooler master 110 mini itx case & the mentioned ASUS R7 240
I suspect a Raspberry Pi 4 is faster and lower power.

The earlier decoders do NOT support 60fps video, but also I find that starting at some point with a refresh of RUclips, all my older Radeon graphics cards stop doing the hardware decoding properly... Old NVidia cards all the way back to the 8000 series still work fine with the decoding though

I've 2x asus variants of this(E35M1-I); bought em as a router/firewall, did the job fine; had pci-e.... the newer E1-2100's made a decent encrypted NAS box as they have AES acceleration
Well I have a suggestion, look for some broken laptops or even just the motherboard by itself, you get very little expansion, but you can get a hold of much nicer mobile CPUs within the $20-$60 range, for example laptops with an i5-4300u are fairly common and so old that they go for next to nothing, but they're really not bad, they're actually a decent improvement over that a6-5200 you have there and I don't have a watt meter but from what my uninterruptible power supply tells me, I can estimate it uses around 20-30W with a basic 5400rpm drive, plus unlike desktop ram, for whatever reason so-dimm ram is dirt cheap, like near $1 or $2 per GB cheap.
4gb boards with the i7-4600U can be had for $50-$60. Its a significant improvement over the i5-4300U in efficiency for tasks. Also supports 12gb of ram and the board consumes 17watts under full load with an ssd.
@@mxmobile5619 Mind clarifying what you mean by significant improvement? Sure it's certainly better, but a fairly mild difference, I'm actually lucky enough to have both the i5 and i7 for just $20, more importantly however, once you get into the $60+ range, you start finding more modern stuff like first gen ryzen or 6th gen intel, sometimes you'll even find quad-core options and getting anything newer will be a far bigger improvement over getting an old i7, that's why I generally recommend avoiding them unless they're about the same price as their i3/i5 counterparts.
@@vgamesx1 In areas where the same load is needed the i7 consumes significantly less power than the i5 and the 4600U outperforms the i5-6300U which can be found for the same price as the i7-4600U. I only recommend the i7-4600U over the 4300U because it can punch up to 6th gen i5 ulv territory for a lower price, to me the two generation later i5 performance match is well worth the extra $20 to save $50 on a board that'll just match the performance.
my i5 4300u laptop idles at 7-8 watts when screen is off, no spining drive tho, only m2 sata
@@dim3nt0 Well as I mentioned it's an estimate, it isn't extremely accurate, it only reads down to something like 15W at its lowest and it being a UPS means I have a bunch of other things plugged into it but thanks it is nice to know it is lower.

Regarding proxmox, would only having two cores limit what I could do with it?
(I’m not very experienced with VMs and have never actually used proxmox. It’s on my list of things to try)
I hadn’t thought about that. Raspbian OS would work on that. (I love that OS for low power pc’s)
For Proxmox you want a bit more memory. Even plain Debian is a bit slow on these. Using Arch without Systemd makes it useable.
I have something similar. I also run a 2 node Proxmox on a bit more powerful hardware.

@@HardwareHaven Usually you have dedicated hardware for a CNC controller but with CNCLinux you basically turn everything off which can be turned off and it uses 100% of the CPU time to create the signals needed. So it doesnt really matter if the CPU is fast slow new or old as long as its somewhere around like 800mhz or above. Often you even turn of hyper threading and all cores but one.
I'm rocking a GA-EP35-DS4 (rev. 2.1) mobo, with MBIT enabled on the bios. It was given to me. I have been looking for a decent overclocking program for windows 10 for this ancient board. Any suggestions? I can not find the factory setup iso to see if there was an overclocking utility specific to my board included with the system, as this machine was saved from a dumpster as well.
When the E350 came out I got a MSI E350i E45 to replace my Phenom II 6-core. It was a terrible downgrade but I did save on power. Only kept it until the AM1 came out and that lasted me up to Ryzen APUs.

I love these lacklustre mainboards. My mail and web server was recently upgraded to an ASRock A330-GC dual core Atom 330 mainboard and it's blisteringly fast compared to the Intel D945GCLF Single core Atom 230 it replaced. I only upgraded because the newer version of SME Server 10 really wanted 4Gb RAM and the old Intel board was maxed out at 2Gb. The SME forums were telling me how it wasn't going to work on such a lowly spec board, but it works just fine. It's hosting a handful of static websites and a dozen email addresses so it's hardly an enterprise grade load.
Super cool. I've never hosted a mail server, but I've hosted a fair amount of web content, and it seems like you really don't need a ton especially for static stuff. Thanks for the comment!
bought a couple of these to make voip servers, they are perfect for it cuz its low power and it has that single pci slot which i need for the hardware interface to add analogue phones to the unit. works perfectly and its really small, i know this is a niche use but ive seen people use these for routers and NAS' too so they do have their place but not for 30 dollars got two for half that of ebay a while ago

I dug out a Toshiba C660D with an E-300 CPU and managed to get it to run Cloudready (an open source version of Chrome OS) and made a functional Chromebook. Keep reviving these pensioned off PCs!

I'm using a similar board from MSI if I remember well as home server since 2012 (going to migrate it soon) but I never tested the power consumption (trusted the specific - 16W). It is running an old Debian with LXDE. Quite slow but is doing its job (plex server is installed). I'll test the power consumption before to dismiss it, I'm curious now 😅

i got an old thinclient with a Intel Atom cpu, and 2gb Ram. it had basically the same performance on windows compared to what the video shows, so i tried Linux Mint xfce, and it now is actually usable. you could try the same, its extremely easy to install.
you probably could mod the bios to unlock the cpu voltage i know on some bios's it's mostly just hidden
Is 30-40 watts not considered efficient? I recently put together a Q6600 system, and it was pulling 100w IDLE and 150w under load running Ubuntu Server.
Do a backup server to your pavillion "server", use home assistant to power it up once per night, sync the data from your main server and power it down afterwards. stick it to a location within your home that is as far away from your main server as you can manage - maybe in the basement if possible to protect it from natural desasters (ok - except heavy flooding....).
That's actually a really good idea. I've had tons of trouble trying to wake from LAN with HASS though
@@HardwareHaven I usally combine it with some wifi powerplug like the wemo ones (or something more professional that is rackmountable - anyway some network operatable power plug) in many cases (check beforehand!) it is scriptable and you can use the mainboards "restore power after powerloss" feature which is way more reliable than wake on lan in my experience.
Or - if you like to tinker: get a raspberry pi and sue it to shorten the power on the atx board directly there are tons of solutions for that out there - if you want to go bonkers you can use something like tinykvm or tinypilot - both basically kvm over ip solutions based on raspberry. one of them supports handling power of atx boards out of the box - not sure which one though.

You could set up a second TrueNas box to mirror the other one. Four used two terabyte drives striped and mirrored zfs2 I think?... Just set it up to sync with your existing setup. You could even get rid of the mirror on the other one and stripe those drives for max throughput.
Yeah, I thought about setting it up with just a single striped 4tb drive I have as a backup, but honestly I'll probably just use a RPi for that haha

I believe 91% was what I had here. I think people typically recommend 90+ when working on exposed PCBs and things of this nature. There’s a good iFixit article on it if you Google it 👍🏻
Just FYI you can get win 10 to run pretty damn well (I have an e350 netbook running win 10) you just need to get a copy of "Tiny 10 64bit" and use that. It cuts all the store and phone home crap out and you'd be amazed how light win 10 is without all the cruft.
The PSU has a high minimum power draw. The TDP of that chip is 18W, while TDP doesn’t exactly equal consumed power, it isn’t off by a factor of 2 either. I also have a laptop with the same chip and it sits at about 5W in vim editing text with the screen at full power.
Mentioning Home Assistant... If anyone consider some old hardware for just running that, don't just consider Intel NUC, look at the Lenovo Tiny's too. The Tiny's seems to have higher spec, with lower price, but also less known than nuc.
Makes me feel better about my 236 score on cenebench r15 with amd A-6 qaud core 1.8ghz hoping doubling my ram will help my PC it will be here next week, you should try SpeedFan to control your fans it’s a freeware program

I was watching this because I have an Intel Atom D525. Still thinking of what to make use of it.
Unless you have some basic task it can do like using it to play music on some chomebook level operating system, I think you’d get more use out of it for scrap

I'm in the process of turning a Core 2 Duo into a " glorified electric typewriter " for one of my roommates, and I have an AMD FX 4300 that I'm going to use as a DIY NAS " TrueNas Core " after I can pickup a few more HDDs. I will also be running Plex on the NAS.

I've cleaned a smoker's computer. A tenant left their 2001 dual-CPU PowerPC Mac tower behind after moving out. This vid was just a mobo clean-up. I was dumb enough to clean a whole tower with multiple cards, drives, keyboard, mouse, monitor. Inhaled/touched enough toxins to reduce my life expectancy.
It was like I'd hugged/kissed/cuddled with Mr. Cancer for half a day. Never do that again. Lesson-learned: Smoker-owned = I trash it, immediately.

I had a little Lenovo x120e that ran on the same processor. It ran abysmally on even a stripped down version of Windows 10. I got so frustrated with this machine that I just tossed it. I wish I had known a little bit more about Linux at the time I acquired it. Now that I know a little bit more about Linux, I think something like Zorin Lite V15.3 would have been fantastic for the x120e.

Try installing codecs like k-lite codec pack, in dxva copy-back mode, it should be able to play videos with those.
Grabbing an old PCI card would improve performance a lot, especially in video playback.

@@HardwareHaven not sure if a pci gpu would help ..max i know of is in the mb range .. the agp/pcie ram size flipped from around 512mb to 1g (can only find 512 agp cards)
WinNT 2000 server had multi cpu and up to 4 gig ram support so as a retro would need to install that
Another point about pci gpu ... bios may let you "share" more ram then a dedicated pci gpu
In terms of emulation yes it can run Lakka and very well.... However N64, PSP, or other newer systems is a no. This board would actually be good as a DIY arcade cab with either a old school CRT monitor, or a older 19" 4:3 LCD monitor (since you got a VGA port).

on the flip side pci ethernet cards are cheap & this mb is ALMOST the better choice for that nas build , you really want a quad & 4 pciE though to make a good Debian combined nas/router/switch. try omv5
Couple notes on the clean up of the board.... It's probably so little of an issue that it might not be worth mentioning, but the cmos battery should probably be removed when cleaning the board, especially with any kind of liquid, and ideally you should have an anti static strap and antistatic brush (the brush's are partially conductive so they ground through the strap you wear, so you need both). Kind of nit picks really, but assuming you "Make it" as a youtuber it's probably better to do it "right" so other people don't assume they can just copy you when you do it "wrong".

I completely agree on being a good example. In my head, I didn't care because it's cheap, and the odds of static discharge damaging components is pretty low. But I'll at least maybe mention it in future videos of that nature. Thanks for the comment!

Does it have Win XP drivers? You could get a really small psu and get a tiny case or 3d print one, and make it a tiny retro XP gaming PC. =)
The motherboard's support page has WinXP drivers available, albeit dated.
Had a Wyse Z90D thin client (has the G-T56N APU which is exactly an E-350 spec to spec) running Windows 7 and used it as a retro gaming PC for a while, it worked alright but nothing fancy: NFS Underground 2 and Most Wanted 2005 running 30fps consistently in 1024x768 with low/medium graphics, NFS Carbon has occasional frame drops under the same settings, Crysis is of course out of the question.
All in all, a bit weak for mid-2000 3D games but should handle 2D games and early 2000 3D games just fine.
Hey, I bought exactly the same board for emulation. I tried it under Batocera. Sadly it have so slow CPU, that couldn't handle even PS1 and have problems with N64. And it became unstable with any try for overclocking.
It is sad, becauise 1,86GHz cpu is enough for PS1 and this was so close... (I tried it with intel core 2 duo)
It is still good for some retro PC gaming from XP era tho (NFS Undergroud 2 for example works great). Even under 64bit Windows 10 :) And W10 works OK, util you wanna go online (especially on RUclips). But internet TV through local app (O2TV) works absoluttely fine.
I would recommend to go with a newer intel chip like the 4105J (those boards don’t costs that much) or even go with a N5105 that has as much power as some older desktops i7‘s and I would Recommend to use a way more efficient pico power supply. Those old chips are not really worth it, after one year you paid as much for the higher power consumption as you paid less for the board itself.
Put a linux for servers on this bad boy and you will be amazed at what it can do. My first experiments were on old single core laptops with 1Gb of ram. I used it as NAS, qbittorent-nox server, pihole(DNS and DHCP servers). You want better performance don't invite bad citizens as Windows.
I bought the guts to a touch-screen 4th gen intel/Lenovo all in one while drinking one night . everything proprietary and I have none of it yet , not even the cpu or ram . Worst purchase of weird tech ive made , at least yours is working .
Install a very light linux distro like puppy and for the next test try to boot emuelec from a hard drive, other usages can be a thin-client/terminal or used for a NAS, hardware firewall or VOIP telephony server ( emulated PBX )

Did i mention the windows de-bloater (even though i didn''t get it to work here (yet anyhow), Guy naming himself JayzTwoCents got a dual core (not sure was core2duo, believe was pretty low spec) running pretty decent using that. And also, i think i may said it before here, not sure, maybe old you tube can be of help (or you tube redux ?). Hope not having been to much a bother, when saying things, already known of, or for some other reason. Greetz from one who started (with computer not before this, but before that one, which had 125000 (and then some, if i calculated correct) less ram than the (considered minimal , or even below, by today standards) i have at disposal today.
